Welcome to the Oak Park Area!
The Village of Oak Park--less than ten miles from downtown
Chicago -- is the visitor’s gateway to a distinctive world of twenty
western suburbs.
Oak Park and some of those suburbs began on the American
frontier in the 1830’s. From the first settlers on, people have come to
this Area to find the best life offered.
Thousands gave their best back, including architect Frank Lloyd
Wright and author Ernest Hemingway, whose homes, works and
haunts are here for visitors to see. There are many other sites
important to individuals, ideas and organizations here that left
their marks on people’s lives around the world.
Visitors and residents today can find traditional and innovative
paths to excellence in the Area’s many attractions, shops, restaurants
and accommodations. From national retailers, privately owned
boutiques and antique shops, and restaurants to match any taste bud,
these places show how people’s visions, tastes and technologies have
endured and changed across three centuries.

How to get to Oak Park
Oak Park is 10 miles due west of Chicago’s Loop.
BY CAR: Take the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) West to
Harlem Avenue (IL Rte. 43) and exit north.
Continue on Harlem to Lake Street and turn right.
Proceed to the northeast corner of Lake Street
and Forest Avenue. Parking is available adjacent
to the Visitors Center.
BY CTA: Get on the Green Line in the Loop and you are there in
20 minutes or less.The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority)
makes getting around Chicago fast, easy and affordable.

This unusual complex served as Wright’s private residence and studio
from 1889 to 1909 - the first 20 years of his career. Wright used his home
as an architectural laboratory, trying out design concepts before sharing them
with clients. Here, he raised six childern with his first wife, Catherine Tobin,
and designed such famous buildings as the Robie House, Larkin Building
and Unity Temple.
With 25 Wright buildings in the neighborhood surrounding the Home
and Studio, Oak Park is an outdoor museum of architectural history.
Self-guided exterior audio tours of the Historic District surrounding the
Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio are available from 10am to 3:30pm daily.
Weekend guided exterior walking tours of the Historic District are available
from 11 am to 4 pm (Mar - Oct) and 12, 1 & 2pm (Nov - Feb).

Considered one of the most complex and exciting buildings in 20th century
architecture, the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple is a National Historic
Landmark, an icon of modern architecture and a destination for tens of
thousands each year. Wright received the commission to design Unity Temple
in 1905 after the original church burned to the ground. This architectural
masterpiece was Wright’s first public commission and remains the last
surviving public building from his golden Prairie period. It is one of the most
famous and acclaimed buildings in the world. Unity Temple is open to the
public 7 days a week and is closed only on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Photography permitted. Custom guided tours for groups of 15

facilities or lots. The Village of Oak Park is happy to provide free parking on
the weekends in many of its lots throughout the Village. There is also metered
parking available. If you choose to park on the street, please be aware of the
parking requirements on the street where you park. These are usually posted
on signs throughout the street.
