It’s a place to read words, hear words, and make your own words better. Our Work Since our 1996 founding by Linda Breneman, Andrea Lewis, and Frances McCue (our first executive director), Hugo House has been the writer’s greatest ally. We have an open door, welcoming all writers. We combine fun and rigor to help writers find the red-hot center of what’s meaningful. We have an active youth program including workshops, mentorships, writing groups, and open mic nights, along with a Youth Leadership Board to develop young writers. In February, Hugo House played a major role in the AWP conference, the annual gathering of 13,000 writers that was held in Seattle for the first time in decades, during which we: • Hosted twelve offsite events in four days at Hugo House with nationally distinguished publishers and organizations as partners • Gave out information at our busy booth on the bookfair floor • Presented the culminating reading of the conference with Sherman Alexie and Tim Egan to an audience of 2,000 In other highlights of the past year, we: • Inaugurated a Spoken Word Camp for teens • Launched an all-new website that’s easier to use and boasts a new logo • Instigated the Word Works series of craft talks/interview events with writers such as Pam Houston, Bob Shacochis, Sven Birkerts, and Major Jackson discussing specific elements of writing, such as dialogue, metaphor, structure, or time • Saw major increases in class enrollments by increasing the quality, quantity, and range of classes, including our first year-long manuscript class • Included Anthony Doerr, David Guterson, Richard Bausch, Chris Abani, Roxane Gay, Natalie Diaz, and other writers in our Hugo Literary Series, which we increased in number from 4 to 5 • Hosted readings with writers Peter Orner, Jennine Capó Crucet, David Gates, and many others 2 Special Guests Featured Speaker Nancy Pearl Nancy Pearl — called “the talk of librarian circles” — is a best-selling writer, by literary critic, and librarian.
