The Mayoral Committee has agreed on a turn around
plan for Metrobus
This turn around plan involves:
 Reviewing the routes that Metrobus services
 Reviewing the way Metrobus is managed by the City to
make sure that services are more reliable
 Introducing new green dual fuel buses
 Introducing a new fare collection system which will use a
smartcard

We are now ready to consult stakeholders and
members of the public about the new proposed
routes

Metrobus turn around in general and route
redesign has been guided by:
 City’s Growth and Development Strategy and
Integrated Development Plan
 City’s Strategic Integrated Transport Plan
Framework
 National Land Transport Act
 Mayoral Committee mandate


The Strategic Integrated Transport Plan Framework identifies an
important role for Metrobus as the primary operator for conventional bus
services.
Conventional bus supported by some dedicated bus lanes will be used
on:
 medium-demand public transport routes of the Integrated Transport Network
(ITN) and to extend service to new areas of captive car users in the South,
South-East, North and North West of the City; and
 Precursors to Rea Vaya BRT in the long term and increasingly the conventional
bus network will be integrated as feeders into the Rea Vaya system

The primary operator will be Metrobus which will be operating on
revised routes guided by this Framework and contracted on a fee/km by
the Scheduled Services Management Agency (SSMA).
 It will also have a new bus and fare management system and its fares aligned
and integrated with Rea Vaya.

The Mayoral Committee directed that a detailed operational plan based on the
following principles should be developed:
 “Continue to serve the 90 000 existing passengers and grow patronage over
time;
 Optimise integration and alignment with Rea Vaya, Gautrain and Metrorail
and support the IDP priority project of Transit Orientated Development;
 Strengthen public transport corridors, especially in areas of high private car
use and link residential areas to economic nodes;
 Extend existing services to new areas of ‘captured car users’ in
South/North/North West;
 Improve frequency, reliability and off peak services;
 Reduce dead kilometres and maximising use of existing depots;
 Incorporate scholar transport services currently provided and potential to
provide; and
 Explore new routes especially in the South, mindful of the potential conflict with
mini bus taxi industry who have OLS for such routes.
 Explore potential to receive a portion of Provincial Government bus
subsidies.”

There will be three kinds of
services:
 Main (M)
 Secondary (S)
 Feeder (F)

A Secondary service is an
intermediate frequency bus
service
 Frequency:15 mins
 Hours of operation: 04h30
until 22h00
 Type of bus: Conventional

A Main service is a high
frequency trunk bus service
 Frequency: mostly 10mins
until 22h00
 Type of bus: Double decker
usually

A Feeder service acts as feeders
to Main Routes
 Frequency : 10 mins
until 22h00
 Type of bus: minibuses and
Metrobus
The target date for implementation of new services is July
2015.
 After feedback from the public, a more detailed
implementation plan will be developed so that
implementation time frames are linked to:

 Arrival of new buses
 Roll out of Rea Vaya BRT Phase 1C (the Louis Botha and Oxford
Road services may be terminated and the buses deployed to
increase frequencies on other routes, secondary routes or new
routes
 Negotiation with the mini bus taxi industry and small bus
operators for them to rationalise/amend or introduce new
routes

City is engaging Province on the routes operated by
subsidized bus contracts e.g. Putco
