Cornet Chop Suey continues to be one of the most popular jazz bands on the trad circuit today. For those who don’t already know, Cornet Chop Suey is named after a somewhat obscure L o u i s Armstrong Photo by Nancy Giffin composition. On July 19th of this year, the band recorded their next CD, live in concert at the historic Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, MO. The CD is already available and is reported to be a “wonderful live performance that really captures the spirit of this fun and entertaining ensemble.” If you like to buy CDs Brian Casserly at festivals, from you’ll have St. Louis, MO plenty of opportunity since Brian and the band have played most of the major festivals this year, including Sacramento, and will finish out the year with quite a few more: Medford Jazz Jubilee, Sun Valley Swing’n Dixie Jazz, and Jubilee by the Sea in Pismo—all in (cont. on pg. 5) Jazz Sunday, Oct. 9 Doug Finke from Louisville, KY, is originally from the Chicago area. He favors the styles of trombonists Bill Rank, Jack Teagarden and Jim Beebe. He played and toured with the Original Salty Dogs, the Smokey Stover Firehouse Band, Bob Scobey’s Frisco JB, Art Hodes and “Wild Bill” Davison. Meetings, meetings, and more meetings has been the norm. I am pretty sure that you have all heard by now that we have changed the name of our major fundraising event, the Sacramento Music Festival. I am also pretty sure you have all heard some of the same comments I have heard. There have been many negative comments, but I am happy to say there have been many more positive comments. The one constant question is, “Why?” The answer to why is that it is time for our name to reflect how the event has evolved over the years into a festival featuring many more musical styles than just jazz. We actually have been a Music Festival for many years but have failed in our efforts to get this word out. We are making a sincere effort to broaden the appeal of the four-day event by shifting some of the focus to other popular forms of American music such as blues, rock ‘n’ roll, Country, rhythm & blues and zydeco. It is so important that you, our loyal members, know that the sounds of our wonderful traditional jazz will not go SUMMARY The Sac. Trad. Jazz Society is a non-profit organization established under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for the purpose of educating the public and members on matters concerning the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music and the study and play of musical instruments associated with traditional jazz music. “JAZZ SUNDAY” “Jazz Sunday” is held monthly, typically the 2nd Sunday, at the Dante Club: 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sac., CA. This official meeting is open to all members of the STJS and their guests; the general public is also welcome. ADMISSION Admission to “Jazz Sunday” is by donation of $8 for members, $12 for non-members. Persons under 12 are admitted free. Youth 12-20 (members) $5, youth 12-20 (non-members) $7. We especially encourage attendance by music students in our jam sets. GOLD CARD AUDITIONS Auditions are held twice a year: Mar. & Oct., 11 am prior to “Jazz Sunday.” Applications are available from the Gold Card Coordinator, to be completed one month before the audition. Call 372-5277 for details. STJS EXEC. DIRECTOR <[email protected]> away. In the near future, you will be receiving our first mailing of a 2012 promotional piece, and I am sure you will be delighted with the trad bands you will be enjoying next year—and yes, we have invited Uptown Lowdown, RSJO, Night Blooming Jazzmen, among others you’ve requested. We gained several additions to our “team” in September. Bob Williams is the new TNT Director, John Cocuzzi is on board as Talent Coordinator for the Sacramento Music Festival, and Valerie Weinberg will be working on marketing and sponsorship development. We have some very busy months ahead of us, but I feel very confident that with our new team in place, and with the continuing support of our Board, we are ready to move forward and produce a record-setting Festival next year. It will be our 39th year, and already there is much excitment whenever we think ahead to 2013 and our big 40th!! Till next time. 2 Mark your calendars: May 25–28, 2012 Memorial Day Weekend In the Months Ahead 2nd Sunday OPEN at 11:30 am MUSIC from 12 noon to 5:00 pm DIRECTIONS to the DANTE CLUB: 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sacramento, 95825 Between Howe & Fulton Avenues, on south side of street. That has been the legacy of the Sacramento Jazz Festival, now the Sacramento Music Festival. Over the last several years, many jazz festivals in the West have closed their doors because the revenue simply was not there. Our festival has been plagued by lower attendance as well. I am happy to announce that with the new name, there has been a renewal and excitement within the Sacramento Community, which we believe will equate to real dollars in sponsorships and increased attendance. Our recent press release has had positive results if the calls to the office are any indication. It is my hope that the 2012 Festival will have higher attendance and increased revenues. Ultimately, a successful festival will help bring success to STJS with all of it’s programs. The fans that attend the Sacramento Music Festival this year will experience much of the old, but also some new and diversified talent. Over the years, this festival has brought new talent for our patrons to enjoy and, perhaps, even help new artists launch their careers. We intend to continue to do that. To give you a little preview of the 2012 Music Festival, we are announcing a preliminary list of invited bands: Sponsor a Jazz Sunday guest $500 SPONSOR PACKAGE includes: • Banner or Poster (provided by Sponsor; size determined by STJS) to be displayed near Main Stage at concert • MC announcements from stage thanking Sponsor • Special Sponsor Table with sign • Opportunity to have flyers/info available at Sponsor Table • Newsletter recognition (1/4-page – camera ready art ) with Artist’s name and calendar information • 4 complimentary admissions to the sponsored Sunday session • Recognition on the STJS website • Name and acknowledgment in the Jazz Sunday program $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000 SPONSOR PACKAGE includes: (depending on housing, distance and travel costs): • • • • ALL OF THE ABOVE, plus Instead of a 1/4 page, newsletter recognition is 1/2 page Instead of 4, you get 8 complimentary admissions Autographed CD from the sponsored artist or band if available October 2011 101st Army Dixieland Band, Brady McKay & the Neurotypicals, High Sierra, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Original Wildcat Jass Band, the Reynolds Brothers, Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, Tom Rigney & Flambeau, Uptown Lowdown, and guest artist Bob Draga. Many more to come... and the schedule is subject to change if musicians can’t make it. I want to thank all of you that supported me in the Racefor the Arts.” I was able to raise money for the Society thanks to the generous donations of several members. Some have requested that they remain anonymous, so I will not mention their names here, but you know who you are. A big Thank You. Fundraising is always an important aspect to any non-profit organization. The money that our Sponsors give to us is vital to the health of STJS. Our major sponsor, The Golden One Credit Union, has given us really stellar support over the years, and they are much appreciated. So, if any of you are looking for financial services, please consider The Golden One. Along the line of sponsorships, we are bringing on a sponsorship development person. Please extend a warm welcome to Valerie Weinberg. Valerie has extensive experience in sponsorship development, and I expect we will see additional sponsorships coming to our organization very soon. Thank You, Valerie, for joining our team. 2 Rio Americano HS premieres work by noted composers PRESS RELEASE FEB. 11, 2012 CLINICIANS: Guest Trombonist JOHN ALLRED Gordon Au, trumpet • David Robinson, trumpet Bob Draga, clarinet • Mike McMullen, reeds Craig Faniani, piano • Bob Secor, piano Jason Wanner, piano • Steve Homan, guitar Bill Dendle, banjo • Eddie Erickson, banjo/vocals Jerry Lopes, bass • Ron Jones, drums A s many school districts cut back or eliminate music programs, Rio Americano High School’s musicians continue to stand out. Rio’s award-winning jazz and concert bands are breaking new ground in the local music scene once again. A collaboration with an emerging national non-profit group, Composers and Schools in Concert (CSIC), will culminate in a world premiere performance of music commissioned for the school’s student musicians. CSIC’s mission is to help enrich music programs and develop the next generation of musicians and composers. Lisa Oman, founder and executive director of CSIC, says, “I wanted to establish a way for composers and schools to easily connect with each other, to support them with grants and revenue-generating opportunities, and to foster collaborations between them.” Omar Thomas and Christopher Callendo, both nationally and internationally recognized composers, are creating original pieces for the October 27 concert to be held at Davis Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium at 8 p.m. “I’m always looking for opportunities for my students to experience and perform new music in professional situations,” says Josh Murray, Rio’s Band Director. “In addition, the concert will generate revenue for our program, which is a huge benefit as all music programs struggle to stay afloat financially.” Tickets can be purchased online at ComposersAndSchools.com/ 32nd annual “Playathon” Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 7:00 – 9:30 pm Sacramento Yacht Club “UP CLOSE & PERSONAL” is a jazz concert fundraiser for the Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival — Feb. 11, 2012 Tax ID: EIN 23-7132119 A flyer with details will be available at Jazz Sunday and online at SacJazz.org Rio Americanoo High School will host its 32nd annual “Playathon” on campus, November 10, from 7 am to midnight. This 17-hour musical marathon features continuous live musical performances by all seven of Rio’s jazz and concert bands, as well as jazz combos and soloists from the school’s Small Ensemble class. Band students from local elementary and middle schools are invited to play along with Rio Band from 3:30 to 5:45 pm. Students attending can play musically themed carnival games and enjoy free refreshments. The community is invited to attend evening concerts scheduled from 6 to 9 pm. This event is free of charge, but tax-deductible donations are appreciated and help support the nationally recognized program serving over 180 students. Rio Americano High School is located at 4540 American River Drive. Visit www.RioBand.net/ 2 October 2011 STJS Foundation Jazz Education Award Casserly (cont.) (from pg. 1) October. Then they’ll be at the Arizona Classic Jazz Fest, the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic, and the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixie Jazz Fest. Before closing the set, Brian slows it down to introduce his band and say a magical farewell with a rendition of “What a Wonderful World” or “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” As the band strolls into the crowd, serenading them, audiences are mesmerized by the surround-sound of the horns and the intimacy of this heartfelt moment of community and fellowship. One of Brian’s CCS band mates said that it’s so moving that it never gets old. No wonder they have so many fans! In addition to captivating audiences with his good vibes and engaging personality, Brian plays trumpet, trombone, and also sings. (Man, can he belt some soulful ballads and blues!) Brian, also goes by the name of “Big B,” is a charismatic horn player and master of both jazz and blues. Besides, CCS, Brian has a blues band, “The St. Louis Social Club.” You can also find him working a bit with High Street in Las Vegas (some time in Oct.) and Reno around Christmas time. A professional musician since the age of 14, Brian has played for many greats in the music business, including Tony Bennett, Tex Beneke, Stan Kenton, Chuck Berry and even Tiny Tim. For several years, he also played the prestigious Monterey Pops Festival. An in-demand session musician, Brian has performed in commercials, recordings and musicals in the U.S. and Canada and is the past music director for the S.S. Admiral, a St. Louis riverboat. After touring the U.S. and Europe with his own jazz band and a St. Louis-based blues band, he now devotes his musical talents to traditional jazz, playing concerts and festivals, as well as recording with several St. Louis bands. 2 October 2011 The STJS Foundation would like to respectfully acknowledge outstanding individuals devoted to jazz education. T his award is designed to elevate the status of traditional jazz by creating an opportunity for recognizing: 1) Jazz musicians and music educators who have a long, consistent record of providing traditional jazz education, and 2) STJS members who have demonstrated a history of consistent support for jazz education activities. Firstly, this process is designed to involve the STJS membership in promoting traditional jazz. Secondly, it is intended to create as many media opportunities as possible to increase the visibility of the STJS Foundation in its financial support of traditional jazz education. Submissions Each member of STJS is invited to submit a nomination form and accompanying reasons for nominating that individual. Successful candidates must be members in good standing of the STJS. The current STJS/STJSF presidents, STJS executive director, TJYBF coordinator, and Jazz Education Committee chairperson are not eligible. All nominations must be submitted to the STJS Jazz Education Committee no later than November 15th. This does not have to be an annual award and could be done every other year. Although nominations will be solicited each year, it is possible that in some years, no recipient will be selected. Selection Process STJS Jazz Education Committee will review all nominations. The previous award recipient shall be invited to participate in the selection of the current year’s recipient. The name of their selected finalist shall be presented to the STJSF board of directors for approval at their January board meeting. The finalist shall be notified in January and asked to submit his/her CV or music bio to the Jazz Education Committee. Recognition The award will consist of an award certificate and a check funded by the STJSF. STJSF Pres. Tom Dithridge and the STJS Foundation board approved a $500 check for the recipient. The previous recipient shall have the honor of presenting the current year’s winner of the Jazz Education Award with a brief presentation at the Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival in February. The STJSF president shall present the inaugural award. The award recipient will be asked to give a short acceptance speech. Media releases will be submitted to The American Rag, JEN (Jazz Educators Network), CAJ (California Assoc. for Jazz), and to school district and jazz club publications. A listing of past award recipients will be maintained on the STJSF website. Please visit: www.sacjazz.org/foundation Truck Tour Memories Chapter 2 — by Judy Hendricks with additional reporting from Tom Dawson and Pete Salerno M y tales of yesteryear in last month’s AATJ prompted some further memories of the Jazz Express. Tom Dawson checked in to say that Larry Gross was also on the crew that built benches and other amenities inside the storied Truck. Jill Harper has vivid memories of a third stop on our itinerary (because Dutch Deutsch ragged on her for months afterward for dancing on one of the table tops in her “shimmy dress”). AATJ from the day doesn’t include him in the extensive list of band gigs—sorry ‘bout that, Dutch—so either he didn’t get the word to the Editor, or it was a one-night job, OR our increasingly bedraggled and enthusiastic crew got him axed from the venue! And, amusingly, Richard Himebauch told us that someone told him years ago that... we got stopped by the cops! Well, here is this humongous truck creeping down the avenues of Sacramento—what’s not suspicious? Of course, this was before sad facts made security a much more somber reality, so when the policeman asked Tom just what he had in the truck, and Tom told him, “a jazz band,” he hardly blinked. He had a look for himself, and then (natch) he let us go on our merry way. 2 NOTE: If this two-part story has jogged your memory and you have even more stories to add to the history of the Jazz Express, please speak with Judy Hendricks at Jazz Sunday or write to [email protected] Entertainment Books by Elinor Hackett STJS EDUCATION VOLUNTEER 2 012 Entertainment Books will .be sold at the Raffle Table every Jazz Sunday through December. Bill Dendle, Lenny Pollacchi and Yvonne Au presented the TJP for their evaluation. We were THRILLED to host two of Our Kind Of Music’s true superstars at the September Jazz Sunday: Bob Mielke and Tony Pringle were in the house!!!! Legendary West Coast trad trombonist Bob Mielke—6 decades of jazz in the Bay Area (Lu Watters, Mayl’s Dixieland Rhythm Kings, George Lewis, Golden Age Jazz Band, and many more, plus his own long-running Bearcats!)—came in from Berkeley to hear Ray Skjelbred and His Cubs. His post-concert opinion? “Gold. Pure Gold.” A dispassionate observer, if any there be, would have to agree. Skjelbred, Katie Cavera, Kim Cusack, Clint Baker and Hal Smith were—uh—what’s the word? Oh, yeah. PURE GOLD! Low key but fun, and when they started to play, chills ran down our collective spines and tickled our toes. Ray pointed out that Clint and Hal were “cookin’” in the back row, “creating a little miracle back there.” Every song was special, but he touched our hearts with a shout out to Ethel Waters on “Am I Blue.” And what was that “Improvisation on the March of Time”? The band was gathered from the Bay Area but also from San Antonio, Chicago and points North and South. An enormous thank you to Rae Ann Hopkins Berry for sponsoring this marvelous crew! Tony Pringle, incomparable cornetist and “musical leader” of the New Black Eagles Jazz Band, was visiting friends in Seattle, then Lincoln, CA; then Cat and Scotte Doggett enticed him to stop over with them and come to Jazz Sunday. Couldn’t entice him to play, though. You’ll have to head back East—New Black Eagles will celebrate their 40th! anniversary on September 30. Tony has been a member since day one: September 30, 1971. In fact, he was a member of Tommy Sancton’s Black Eagle Jazz Band (not NEW, you see) when it was formed in 1969. The New Black Eagle’s 40th Anniversary Concert is scheduled for September 18 at the Collings Foundation in Stowe, Massachusetts; the Foundation is producing a 3-CD set of previously unreleased recordings by the band—28 excellent tunes for under $30. Go to www.blackeagles.com/sound.htm or www.collingsfoundation.com. Happy Anniversary! Crazy Eights, the Main Stage Set 1 band from Davis, acquitted itself handsomely. Evan Hamaguchi looks comfortable as leader, with Scott Yamamoto and Bryce Korte filling out the reed section. Sam Theg and Andrew Stephens are on trumpet, Emma Maul is on bass, Drew Thompson on drums, and Dave Chan was the ringer on piano. Ana Chan and Scott Yamamoto are the vocalists. Congrats to Instructor Celia Cottle! Notably, they presented a robust “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” 10 Just before our second set, MC Jim Fusaro choked up a little when he called for a moment of silence in honor of September 11th victims and heroes. Thank you, Jim. What a pleasure to see Cy Young leading Set Three. Renard Perry, Norm Gary, Brandon Au, Pamys Weinberg, Mike Melnikov and Pete Salerno joined him in a group they called Just in Time. Really swingin’ set; lots of dancers. Betty Tripp, Rosie and Paul Knoll (from Florida) came down from San Francisco to hear the guest band. And thanks to John Plut, Rae Ann Berry’s driver, and to William Nichols, who chauffeured Bob Mielke. William is a member of the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California. (NOJCNC is slightly older than STJS.) He congratulated us on our substantial and enthusiastic Club. The Tailgate Room was a little sparse for the day but nonetheless plenty animated. Ira Greenstein and young Eric Treadwell led off Set 1. Barbara Maurizi and banjo player Wes Fleischer were among the band members. And then Sam Theg and the Crazy Eights’ sax section joined Jeremiah Massey and others on Set Two. Otneil Rachie was on violin— second one of the day. Tom Gunterman is becoming a regular on violin. SRS Editor Merv Graham was also there! Set 3 or 4 (I should keep better track): Katie Cavera joined her friend, Wade Meith, and Ned Poffinbarger, and were bearing down on the banjo/guitar riffs with Dan Lobay, Gregory Pequeen, Dick Lockwood and Billie Menz. Vicki Tama migrated from the Gold Card Set to add a couple of vocals. Last set in the Tailgate had Fred Pepper, Larry Salerno, Tom Gunterman accompanying Harry DuVall. Very nice! Paula Dula, Queen of the GCR, scheduled a trad first set, and it turned out real good, in my humble opinion. Jack Scott on drums drove Charlie Gehlbach, Jack Mootz, Lockwood, Gene Mondro, Frank Lindskoog and Mark Kramer for a nice, hot set. Sets 2, 4, 5 included Jared Blum, Gonzalez, Gary, Pepper, Blucher, Bill Chamberlain, Bellacera, Todd Morgan and others. Charlie Hull, Alan Ginter, Larry Salerno and Ken Meyers backed up 15 vocalists on 20 numbers (or maybe I lost track). I especially remember that Ginter praised Harry DuVall’s beautiful “Once Upon a Time,” and Ginter returned the favor with “September in the Rain.” Todd Morgan is SO much fun. His parents were in the room for “Digga Digga Do.” Edd Burhans’ “Jamaica Farewell” pushed Julia McAfee onto the dance floor to show us how the dance is really done! Charlie Hull confided (well, it isn’t a secret) that Edd Burhans (aka Eddie Burr) is being inducted into the local Western Swing Society Hall of Fame on October 2, at the end of the WSS Hall of Fame Music Festival. You GO, Edd! October 2011 (“The Cricket” continued from page 10) One thing nice about the Vocal Set: all participants push themselves with new and less-familiar songs. “I’m a Lucky So and So” from Pat Kennedy, and “Isn’t It a Lovely Day” from Gwenetta Brooks, to name just two. Francesca Gorre Homan dedicated “Summertime” to her father, who was born on September 11, and to Heather McConnell, who died on September 2. Heather was a smiling presence on the Musicians Desk for years, along with her other volunteer efforts for jazz education. I heard many expressions of grief about her unexpected loss. And Modesto Jazz has taken a big hit with the deaths of both Ernie Bucio and Jerry Hogin at the end of August. Our heartfelt sympathy to all their friends and family. If you wondered why Joe Walton wasn’t at August Jazz Sunday, he was in the hospital. Showed up September 11 (against his doctor’s instructions) to pick up some extra copies of the August 2011 newsletter with the great picture of him with his daughter, Princess, and bartender Felipe Gutierrez. Get well and THEN come back, Joe. I talked to Jane Grey and her attendant, Eddy Chavarria. STJS member Frank Scalzo was their driver. And it was nice to see Jack and Barbara Davis with friends at the back tables. Larry Sikorski’s business partner, Alvin, brought Amy, Dominic and Rhiannon. One of those is the girlfriend of another one of those, and one of those is the daughter of another one of those, but my notes are not at all clear who is what. We’re glad they were all present and accounted for. Joy Skalbeck forwarded this link: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=lXKDu6cdXLI. The video, “Jazz for Cows,” has gone viral with nearly 1 million hits at press time. It is Steve Call, instructor for Brigham Young University’s Dixieland band (named Jazz Legacy. I didn’t recognize the others in the New Hot Five, but they were playing trad to an admiring herd of very attractive French cows. Who knew they had such good taste? Ramon Valentin also has good taste, but he needs your help. He talked to a charming lady at the April or May Jazz Sunday named Millie or Ellie or Nellie. (He admits he should have written it down.) Call and ask the Jazz Office for his phone number if you want to get together for dancing at October Jazz Sunday. Speaking of dancing, the expanded (about double) dance floor got good usage this month, so it looks like we’ll keep it. Come check it out! Chuck Warren told me he’s attended about once a quarter for the last ten years. Sounds like it’s getting to be a habit, Chuck! Rick Martin has a degree in classical sax, and has been a Sac City School District substitute teacher. He has encouraged students to come to STJS, but has never been here October 2011 himself; now he has. He is an old friend of Norm Echols and Norm’s son-in-law, Boyd Phelps. He said he knows Boyd well enough to think he’ll work out of his medical difficulties. Here’s hoping! (Hello, Boyd!) Brian Gayek is an Adult Jazz Camp attendee; joined STJS today—hooray! Make a note: In case the newsletter arrives in time, Bill Schoening has booked John Cocuzzi at Mather Field Road Straw Hat on October 5. Frederick Hodges is at St. Rose of Lima Senior Ministry in Roseville on October 6, from 6 to 8. Call 916.782.1862 for details. Crescent Club in Old Sac is making good use of some of our musicians. Check it out. In fact—check out everything in Music Here & There—enjoy yourself! 2 Raffle Cent$ by Kathy Becker STJS RAFFLE COORDINATOR W Where was everyone? You missed a great show. Now we have word that Heather McConnell (STJS volunteer who passed away Sept. 2) had some original paintings that will be sold at Jazz Sunday, with proceeds designated for STJS Music Lesson Awards. We really appreciate this added support for our jazz education programs.
