MORRISVILLE CONNECTION
Find the Pinecone
Contest
To continue celebrating 2013 being our Year of Community, we will be
holding a series of contests and events this summer. This month, we will
kick off with our Find the Pinecone contest. Hidden in this newsletter is a
Morrisville pinecone (actual size: ).
If you find it, visit www.townofmorrisville.org/newsletter and follow
the link to fill out the form correctly and be entered into a raffle. One
winner will be randomly selected to receive a History of Morrisville book,
written by Morrisville's local historian, Earnest Dollar. The deadline for
the contest is May 31, and the winner will be recognized in a future issue of
the Morrisville Connection. One entry per person will be permitted, and
the contest is limited to Morrisville residents only, please!
Each year, the Town of Morrisville chooses a theme that focuses on a
specific function or service we provide to our residents. Throughout the
coming months, we’ll highlight all of the opportunities Morrisville’s staff
and Council provides to give our residents a sense of community.
Town of Morrisville's staff and Council encourages the spirit of community
among our residents through current programs and events. Community
influences several of Town Council’s Priorities and Perspectives, such as
“Provide an Environmentally Sensitive & Livable Community”, “Community
Safety”, and Core Values like “Well Planned Community”; and Morrisville’s
staff and Council recognize the importance of providing programs, events
and resolutions that cultivate an identity and an attitude of fellowship.
Stay tuned to see what next month brings for the Year of Community!

Stay Pool Safe This Summer!
With the warm weather approaching, Fire Chief Todd Wright and
the members of the Morrisville Fire Department would like to
provide the community with pool and water safety information.
Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death for children 14 and under. Swimming pools are
the most common site for a drowning to occur among children
between the ages of 1 and 4 years. By following the safety
tips provided, you can help to make our community safer. For
these and other great safety tips, visit www.safekids.org.
Prevent Drowning:
• Actively supervise your children around water at all times,
and have a phone nearby to call for help in an emergency.
• Make sure your pool has four-sided fencing and a selfclosing, self-latching gate to prevent a child from wandering
into the pool area unsupervised. In addition, hot tubs
should be covered and locked when not in use.
• Install a door alarm, a window alarm or both to alert you
if a child wanders into the pool area unsupervised.
• From the start, teach children to never go near
or in water without an adult present.
• Enroll your child in swimming lessons after age 4 – typically the
earliest age when they are likely to practice and retain information.
Teach children how to tread water, float and stay by the shore.
• Learn CPR and know how to respond in water emergencies.

Sgt. Earl Godwin Honored in Law
Enforcement United Ride
On May 6, Retired Raleigh Police Officer Randy Miller will embark on a
bicycle ride from Raleigh to Chesapeake, Virginia and will then continue
on Washington, DC. He is riding as a member of Law Enforcement
United (LEU), an organization whose purpose is to honor the service
and sacrifice of all law enforcement officers who have died in the line
of duty and support the survivors left behind. Their goals are to raise
public awareness of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of
duty, provide monetary support for concerns of police survivors (COPS)
and the officer down memorial page (ODMP) and assist other charitable
organizations that share their common goals.
This year Retired Officer Miller’s ride will honor Sgt. William Earl Godwin,
a Morrisville Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty on May
22, 1997. Sgt. Godwin was killed in an accident while responding to a
man with a gun call at a limousine service company on NC 54. While
en-route, another vehicle broadsided his Range Rover police vehicle at
the intersection of McCrimmon Parkway and Church Street, causing it to
roll over and eject him from the vehicle, killing him. Retired Officer Miller
chose to ride in honor of Sgt. Godwin because his son is currently an
officer with the Town of Morrisville.
Currently retired from the Raleigh Police Department, Retired Officer
Miller comes from a family of law enforcement officers. He has been
a member of Team Raleigh since 2010, which has been involved in LEU
since 2008. Their ride will include several stops in North Carolina before
continuing on to Chesapeake, Virginia to bring recognition of the Raleigh
Police Memorial that is currently being built. From there, the Team will
ride to Washington, DC and arrive on the first day of National Police
Week.
“It is a worthwhile event to honor, raise awareness of the sacrifices our
officers make, and what the families are left to deal with. COPS, concern
of Police Survivors are the only non-profit working to help these families.
Law Enforcement United provides funding to them as well as Officers
Down page, which tracks and remembers officers killed in the line of
duty,” said Retired Officer Miller.
For more information on LEU, visit http://www.lawenforcementunited.
org/.
