President’s Message
Burns Lake
More than just an auto parts store
Howdy friends and neighbours. Yes it’s me
again with the great mug shot. Someone awhile
ago took the photo, gave me a handlebar
mustache and made a ‘Wanted dead or alive’
poster at work.
Now down to business as we approach
another great fall fair. But one doesn’t know
where to begin though.
Capital projects continue this year with
another cow barn, groundwork to another set
of washrooms, full renovations to our stage and
numerous smaller projects.
Grass seed will be planted to create more
green space and many things with a fresh coat
of paint.
What else is new? Team roping is coming to
the fair along with the 1st annual lawnmower
races. This sport is apparently a big thing in
different areas of our province. We hope to
connect with the circuit.
Now did I say something about another cow
barn? Yes, we the Lakes District Fall Fair have
been awarded the Angus Gold Show. This is one
of only two in this province. We have also been
awarded the Hereford Mark of Excellence Show.
How about that for the community of Burns
Lake. So there will be plenty of cattle on the
grounds.
Our thanks to the community for voting and
awarding us the Paul Sandercott Business of
the Year award in 2015. We’re very grateful to
everyone.
My thanks to the local fair board for their hard
work and continued dedication to make this the
success it has been.
The children’s festival continues and brings
new ideas. Lego Man is returning once again.
Remember it’s a family a-fair, something
for all ages. We hope to see you there
September 9-11, 2016.

FIRST AND FOREMOST BE A GOOD EXHIBITOR BY
BEING A GOOD SPORTSMAN: Be on time with your
exhibits. Late openings are viewed as a management
problem when in fact it may relate to late exhibits.
Follow the schedule explicitly. If rules or schedules are not
clear, obtain clarification before, not after, judging.
Do not blame the show committee if they fail to bring to
your attention that you have entered incorrectly. This is your
responsibility.
Label entries with the correct variety name, or identification
such as early or late, even if the schedule doesn’t request it.
This adds to the educational value of the fair.
Competent people familiar with that division will do the
judging. If through some fault of the show committee an
entry is left, missed, or is disqualified through error, the
exhibitor is entitled to a refund of the entry fee.

THE PROVINCE OF B.C. –
Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch
The Fall Fair strives to keep the
history and culture of the Lakes
District alive and strong.
When you visit the Fair, you will
see many aspects of the heritage of
Burns Lake and the Lakes District.
While visiting the Exhibit Hall, you
will find many examples of local
preserves, baking, garden produce,
flowers, crafts and needlework
including quilting. Be sure to check
out the large 4ft. x 8ft. Historical
Information Signs in the back room of
the Exhibit building that give a brief
history of the original settlements
and trails of the Lakes District. These
signs are all sponsored by local
residents.
Be sure to visit Frank Bergen’s large
trailer located on the grounds with his
display of hundreds of pictures and
stories of the pioneers of this area
depicting the lifestyle that they lived.
At the Main Stage, you will see
traditional dances of the area
performed by the Highland Dancers,
our Traditional Native Dancers and
then you can take part in a good
old fashioned Family Dance on
Saturday evening.
Heritage and Agriculture go hand
in hand and in the end, they are our
culture.

QUILTING
PIECED QUILTS: Pieced quilts
are made by sewing pieces of
material together. The pattern
is made by the colors of the
pieces and the way they are
put together.
APPLIQUED QUILTS: Appliqued
quilts are those in which a
design is cut from contrasting
material and applied to the
plain background material
or quilt block. The cut out
material makes the design.
PIECED & APPLIQUED:
In these quilts the
design is seamed
together as in a pieced
quilt, then appliqued
onto the surface of
the quilt or onto
blocks which are then
seamed together.
EMBROIDERED
QUILTS: On these
quilts the principal
design is created by
embroider which may
be the principal part
of the design.

Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge on the training
of dogs. For the past 30 years Bryan has trained dogs
for obedience, agility, tracking and searching, search
and rescue, as well as herding training. Specializing in
herding the natural way, Bryan brings a common sense
approach to herding training. Bring a dog to a useful
state to be helpful in the early days of training. He
shows you how to get that connection that you need
with your canine partner.
Bryan has worked on cattle ranches and farms as well
as having his own cattle and sheep. He now custom
grazes both cattle and sheep, breeds, trains and works
New Zealand Herding dogs. He conducts herding
workshops, announces trails and conducts stock dog
demonstrations. He also competes at both cattle and
sheep dog trails.
We would also like to thank
Richard Martens from Vanderhoof
for his support.
