Many wounds observed within this population are preventable thanks to a basic knowledge of the neonate’s skin characteristics. The Geriatric skin does not have the same defenses as skin of someone much younger. The elderly population, especially in the long term care setting, are dealing with comorbidities that no longer allow them to be independent making their risk increase and their healing capability to be compromised. These issues will be discussed. It is what we like to call a positive kick in the attitude! Every day we pick the attitude we will go at life with. Sam often refers to this as picking the driver of your bus. Which attitude do you want driving your bus for your life and your organization? The bus being our skills, education, experience and objectives. If the wrong attitude is driving our bus, we will not achieve our full potential or give our best. This is why it is vital to have attitude awareness – to understand that the attitude we choose every day is either leading us closer to our desired success or further away from it. Our attitude is a lot like a battery and sometimes it loses its positive charge. Sam not only puts that positive spark into everyone’s attitude, but shows how to maintain that positive spark in the midst of adversity and the things that drain us. Sam discusses how we make attitude a choice every day and that our 18 This program is designed to rekindle your organization’s enthusiasm. More than just having a positive attitude, Sam discusses ways to put the right attitude into action and how doing so will achieve the best results. While we cannot control what goes on around us, we can control our perceptions, responses and actions, which ultimately form our attitude. In this side-splitting humorous program Sam shares his seven attitude lessons that will transform your organization. (GS2) Compression for Primary Prevention, Treatment and Prevention of Recurrence of Venous Leg Ulcers: An Evidenced and Consensusbased Algorithm for Care across the Continuum SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2016 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM attitude is either in the way or making a way and we determine which every day. Speakers: Mikel Gray, PhD, PNP, FNP, CUNP, CCCN, FAANP, FAAN Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP Catherine Ratliff, PhD, GNP-BC, CWOCN, CFCN Stephanie Yates, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, CWOCN In an effort to provide clinical guidance for providing individualized care to patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), the WOCN Society developed an evidence-and consensusbased algorithm for compression in patients with CVI. An algorithmic approach for venous ulcer primary prevention, management, and prevention of reoccurrence was selected to assist evidence-based clinical decision making for application of compression across the health care continuum. This session will introduce the end product of that initiative: the VLU algorithm, discuss how it was developed and provide rational for the use of the cornerstone concept, clinical CEAP scores. LUNCH SYMPOSIA SESSIONS (S04) Maintaining Peristomal Skin Health: What We Can Do! 11:20 AM – 1:00 PM 1.5 contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 710 a Speakers: Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, CFCN, FAAN Jo Hoeflok, MA, BSN, RN, CGN, CETN Despite improvements in surgical techniques and ostomy product availability, the incidence of peristomal skin complications remains remarkably high; reported rates are greater than 75%, are not limited to one group or region, and are associated with significantly lower quality of life. Recent research also suggests that patients frequently fail to recognize and report peristomal skin complications. While we now have a number of studies reporting on the incidence and type of peristomal complications, we lack evidence as to strategies for preventing (continued) these complications. This presentation will provide a review of the current literature regarding the incidence and impact of peristomal complications, and will explore both clinical and “systems” issues potentially contributing to the problem as the patient moves through the care continuum. A major focus will be on the WOC/ ET nurse role in reducing complications and improving outcomes, and specific strategies will be suggested and explored, including a model for maintaining peristomal skin health. (S05) The WOCN Society’s VLU Algorithm: Practical Tips for Use 11:20 AM – 1:00 PM 1.5 contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 710 b Speakers: Mikel Gray, PhD, PNP, FNP, CUNP, CCCN, FAANP, FAAN Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP Catherine Ratliff, PhD, GNP-BC, CWOCN, CFCN Stephanie Yates, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, CWOCN This is an opportunity to practice using the WOCN Society’s newly released VLU Algorithm for compression for primary prevention, treatment and prevention of recurrence of venous ulcers. Case scenarios from a variety of care settings and at various stages of disease will be shared. Attendees will be able to participate in this interactive session. 1.5 (S06) Prevalence and Incidence: Implications for Clinical Practice 11:20 AM – 1:00 PM contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 511 Speakers: Margaret Goldberg, MSN, RN, CWOCN Nancy Tomaselli, MSN, RN, CS, CRNP, CWOCN, LNC Inconsistency in measuring prevalence and incidence prevents facilities from benchmarking prevalence within their own facility against facilities of similar size and patient acuity. This session will focus on the importance of benchmarking prevalence and incidence, implementation strategies related to these data in the clinical setting, and how these strategies empower the WOC nurse. (GS3) Expanding Boundaries: Research Abstracts 1:10 PM – 2:40 PM Key Findings from the 2015 International Consensus Congress on the Use of Convexity Colleen Drolshagen, RN, CNS, CWOCN Rosemary Hill, BSN, RN, CWOCN, CETN(C) Research of Stoma Bridges and Their Impact on Skin Integrity and Patient Outcomes Toni McTigue, MSN, APNC, CWOCN Comparing visual and objective skin assessment with pressure injury risk Caroline Borzdynski “You know it is definitely a life-changing experience because you have to change your whole lifestyle around it”: Affected individual and caregiver perspectives on urinary incontinence Michelle Lobchuk, PhD, RN Pressure Ulcer Risk in the Incontinent Patient Population: Analysis of Incontinence and Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers from the International Pressure Ulcer Prevalence Survey Charlie Lachenbruch, PhD CONCURRENT SESSIONS » 2:50 PM – 3:50 PM (W200) Breaking Bad: Pharmacologic Impact of Medications on Wound Healing 2:50 PM – 3:50 PM (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 517 a-c Speaker: Janice Beitz, PhD, RN, CS, CNOR, CWOCN, CRNP, APNC, MAPWCA, FAAN, ANEF Wound care clinicians are familiar with the use of medications to treat or prevent skin and wound care problems. However they may be less aware that pharmacological therapies can cause adverse skin events and/or impair wound healing. This session will discuss pathomechanisms for adverse wound healing and skin changes and discuss clinical presentations. (O201) Rupert Turnbull Lecture: Update on ERAS 2:50 PM – 3:50 PM 1.5 contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 517 a-c Moderators: Joyce Pittman, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FNP-BC, CWOCN Jody Scardillo, DNP, RN, ANP-BC, CWOCN This session will provide an opportunity for you to hear the latest research findings in WOC/ET nursing. Research-based abstracts are selected by a rigorous, two-step peer review process. Clinical investigators will present their findings in a moderated session. 1.0 contact hours 1.0 contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 517 d Speakers: Deborah Abner, MScN, CETN(C) Julie Thacker, MS, FACS, FASCRS This session will provide the attendee to hear from people with an ostomy who will describe how the experience of living with an ostomy has been with them. This lecture will provide an overview of these studies and key clinical pearls to incorporate the data into practice. 2:50 PM – 3:50 PM 1.0 contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 510 Speaker: Jen Hurley, CPHRM, CHCP It seems that we cannot go a week without another front page headline about a data breach. Sophisticated cyber criminals have put healthcare in the crosshairs due to the wealth (literally) of information available and relatively easy to obtain. Other industries have implemented rigorous programs to protect consumers from identity theft, but healthcare lags behind... instead of developing standardized guidelines regulators penalize. This system of penalty was for a bygone era, no longer are the days of if you experience a breach, it’s when you will get breached again. During this session, Jen will walk the audience through the basics of cybersecurity and HIPAA as they specifically pertain the practice of the WOC professional. She will use real case examples, inviting participation from the audience, to delve into the everyday occurrences that present risks of cyber insecurity. She’ll also highlight the aspects of HIPAA regarding security, and elements of the Privacy Rule that may have more impact on the WOC nurse than others in healthcare. Together, we’ll learn a few simple steps we can take to protect ourselves, our organization, and our patients. 20 (W204) Wounds, Bugs and Drugs 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM 1.0 contact hours (Lecture and Discussion) Room: 517 a-c Speaker: John Lynch, MD, MPH Speaker: Lynette Franklin, MSN, ACNS-BC, CWOCN-AP, CFCN (PP203) Cybersecurity & HIPAA: Breaching Borders CONCURRENT SESSIONS » 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM This session will engage the audience and will include a discussion around complicated wounds involving various microorganisms, focused on bacteria, including the mechanisms of antimicrobial drug resistance.
