This session will familiarize the participants to the specific
skin challenges neonates are confronted to. Many wounds
observed within this population are preventable thanks to a basic
knowledge of the neonate’s skin characteristics.
The Geriatric skin does not have the same defenses as skin of
someone much younger. The elderly population, especially in
the long term care setting, are dealing with comorbidities that no
longer allow them to be independent making their risk increase
and their healing capability to be compromised. These issues will
be discussed.

This keynote presentation by Sam Glenn is an empowering,
entertaining and captivating way to recharge your group’s
attitude batteries, rekindle enthusiasm and ignite a new level of
personal and professional positivity +! It is what we like to call a
positive kick in the attitude!
Every day we pick the attitude we will go at life with. Sam often
refers to this as picking the driver of your bus. Which attitude do
you want driving your bus for your life and your organization?
The bus being our skills, education, experience and objectives. If
the wrong attitude is driving our bus, we will not achieve our full
potential or give our best. This is why it is vital to have attitude
awareness – to understand that the attitude we choose every
day is either leading us closer to our desired success or further
away from it.
Our attitude is a lot like a battery and sometimes it loses its
positive charge. Sam not only puts that positive spark into
everyone’s attitude, but shows how to maintain that positive
spark in the midst of adversity and the things that drain us. Sam
discusses how we make attitude a choice every day and that our

This program is designed to rekindle your organization’s
enthusiasm. More than just having a positive attitude, Sam
discusses ways to put the right attitude into action and how
doing so will achieve the best results. While we cannot control
what goes on around us, we can control our perceptions,
responses and actions, which ultimately form our attitude. In this
side-splitting humorous program Sam shares his seven attitude
lessons that will transform your organization.

attitude is either in the way or making a way and we determine

Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP
Catherine Ratliff, PhD, GNP-BC, CWOCN, CFCN
Stephanie Yates, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, CWOCN
In an effort to provide clinical guidance for providing
individualized care to patients with chronic venous insufficiency
(CVI), the WOCN Society developed an evidence-and consensusbased algorithm for compression in patients with CVI. An
algorithmic approach for venous ulcer primary prevention,
management, and prevention of reoccurrence was selected to
assist evidence-based clinical decision making for application of
compression across the health care continuum. This session will
introduce the end product of that initiative: the VLU algorithm,
discuss how it was developed and provide rational for the use of
the cornerstone concept, clinical CEAP scores.

Despite improvements in surgical techniques and ostomy product
availability, the incidence of peristomal skin complications
remains remarkably high; reported rates are greater than 75%,
are not limited to one group or region, and are associated
with significantly lower quality of life. Recent research also
suggests that patients frequently fail to recognize and report
peristomal skin complications. While we now have a number
of studies reporting on the incidence and type of peristomal
complications, we lack evidence as to strategies for preventing
(continued)
these complications. This presentation will provide a review of the
current literature regarding the incidence and impact of peristomal
complications, and will explore both clinical and “systems” issues
potentially contributing to the problem as the patient moves
through the care continuum. A major focus will be on the WOC/
ET nurse role in reducing complications and improving outcomes,
and specific strategies will be suggested and explored, including a
model for maintaining peristomal skin health.

It seems that we cannot go a week without another front page
headline about a data breach. Sophisticated cyber criminals
have put healthcare in the crosshairs due to the wealth (literally)
of information available and relatively easy to obtain. Other
industries have implemented rigorous programs to protect
consumers from identity theft, but healthcare lags behind...
instead of developing standardized guidelines regulators
penalize. This system of penalty was for a bygone era, no longer
are the days of if you experience a breach, it’s when you will get
breached again.
During this session, Jen will walk the audience through the
basics of cybersecurity and HIPAA as they specifically pertain
the practice of the WOC professional. She will use real case
examples, inviting participation from the audience, to delve into
the everyday occurrences that present risks of cyber insecurity.
She’ll also highlight the aspects of HIPAA regarding security, and
elements of the Privacy Rule that may have more impact on the
WOC nurse than others in healthcare.
Together, we’ll learn a few simple steps we can take to protect
ourselves, our organization, and our patients.

Work and life can be challenging with the fast pace and ever
changing landscape, especially in healthcare. Events happen that
feel beyond our control, and demands for our time stretch us
past our limits. How can we effectively deal with life’s challenges
AND maintain productivity, a positive attitude and motivation?
This program, based on the book The Power of T.E.D., introduces
participants to the roles of the Dreaded Drama Triangle (DDT)
to increase their self-awareness. In addition, we introduce the
anecdote to drama in the form of three vital questions to make
shift happen.
The management of ostomy patients with challenging stomas

(GS4) Protecting the Border: Skin Health
Management of the high output stoma is extremely challenging
for the clinician, as it is associated with malabsorption,
malnutrition, dehydration, reduced quality of life, significant
morbidity and mortality, and high health care costs. The etiology
can be multifactorial. However, ensuring adequate nutrition
and hydration is an integral component of care. Management of
these patients is complex and requires an understanding of the
physiological alterations that occur in order to understand the
treatments employed. Those treatments can include dietary,
fluid and pharmacological agents. This presentation will address
these physiological alterations along with the roles of nutrition
and fluid interventions, and the conventional medications as well
as trophic factors enlisted.

Radical cystectomy is the standard treatment for muscle
invasive bladder cancer. Reconstructive surgery for the patient
undergoing a cystectomy includes the construction of an ileal
conduit, neobladder or continent urostomy. This presentation
will review each surgical procedure and report on long term
outcomes including measures of quality of life, recurrence of
disease, renal function and complications such as obstructions,
stoma issues and hernia formation. The problem in practice for
the WOC nurse is the lack of long term follow up on this patient
population and this session will help the clinician understand the
long term implications of the three urinary diversions to better
support the patient in decision making.

various forms of skin damage based on cause and treatment.
The purpose of this presentation is to highlight shared factors
that threaten skin health in patients with acute, chronic and
critical illnesses and provide a vision for a unified approach to
the prevention, assessment and management of skin health that
address the most common factors (pressure, shear, friction,
trauma and moisture) that threaten our patient’s largest organ,
the skin.

A panel will present their challenges and solutions for caring
for a new ostomy patient across the healthcare continuum. The
current healthcare climate in North America is one in which
healthcare professionals are challenged to care for individuals
as they rapidly move between the various healthcare settings
receiving various levels of care. Prolonged acute care stays are
limited and the acuity of individuals in the homecare and longterm care settings is rising. WOC nurses are challenged to ensure
continuity of care among the healthcare settings. Budgetary
restrictions in different sectors often results in a disruption in
access to care, dressings and specialists. This session will explore
the challenges and barriers to providing best practice care in
these challenging times.

Awareness of the factors that affect the skin of the obese person and
the effect these changes have on routine skin care and wound healing
is but one of the tasks that we must undertake to guarantee positive
outcomes when we are asked to participate in the care of the bariatric
patient. Our own safety and that of the patient become a concern
when we consider the lifting, turning and repositioning that often
accompany skin care and pressure ulcer prevention protocols. This
presentation will address the changes that differentiate skin of
the obese person from that of the non-obese person, the effects
on the healing process and changes in skin and wound care to
accommodate these changes. Selection of proper support surface
will be discussed as well as use of ancillary equipment to facilitate
care and lessen risk of staff injury. This lecture will also discuss the
need for each of us as healthcare providers to be aware of our
feelings about obesity and to extend sensitive care when working

There is probably nothing more common or more frustrating to
patients and families in the world of pediatric urology than problems
with bladder and bowel dysfunction. More than 50% of office visits
to a pediatric urologist are due to these problems. UTIs account for
more than 1 million office visits and greater than 50,000 ER visits per
year. Unfortunately there is often a gap in understanding the best
practices for effectively treating these problems.
This session will discuss various examples of bladder and bowel
dysfunctions seen in pediatric urology including the diagnosis, evaluation
and possible treatment modalities. Case studies will be presented.

In order to maintain a successful skin safety program, all
caregivers and administration must share the belief that multiple
health care disciplines and providers play a role. Therefore,
best practice bundles must be integrated into the culture and
infrastructure of the health care system. Evidence suggests
that the infrastructure components are often the missing link
to implementation and maintenance of a skin safety program.
Common gaps include lack of staff education, lack of physician
Each ostomate’s psychological journey is unique, just as each
stoma is different. There are some common themes that arise
with ostomates, and these are good for WOC nurses to be aware
of and bring up with new ostomates. The topics we will discuss
during this session is emotional adjustment to the ostomy,
sexuality and body image, as well as social life considerations.
Often times the medical profession focuses only on the physical

The incidence of perioperative pressure ulcers over the past 5
years has NOT decreased but increased (Chen, 2012). According
to a 2014 publication from the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory
Panel the incident rate for pressure ulcers attributed to the
operating room range from 5% – 53.4%. As a result substantial
patient harm has been reported leading to complications,
disfigurement, disability, and death. Despite published
guidelines specific to the operating room (OR) significant gaps in
knowledge, practice, and research exist.
The Association of Perioperative Registered nurses (AORN)
chartered a task force including AORN subject matter expert
members and representation from the Wound, Ostomy and
Continence Nurses Society. The task force has created a PPUP
online toolkit for both association and society members.
(continued)
This online toolkit will contain: PPUP Program Quality
Improvement (QI) roadmap, surgical specific evidence-based risk
assessment tools and trigger systems, gap analysis and handoff
communication tools, patient safety investigation and root cause
analysis checklists and current references. Additionally several
webinars, downloadable slide decks and posters will be available
on various topics including: Surgical positioning, risk assessment,
quality improvement, skin assessment and documentation.
The presentation will describe the toolkit components, and illustrate
a strategic plan to raise awareness, improve communication, and
competency around a vision of eliminating patient harm from
pressure ulcers in the high-risk surgical population. The toolkit
is meant to strengthen peri-operative pressure ulcer prevention
efforts, supplementing or adding to an institution-wide
comprehensive pressure ulcer prevention program.

Canadian tri-specialty nurses in wound, ostomy and continence
care, Enterostomal Therapists, were often being de-valued
in their role and in some cases were being replaced by lesser
skilled healthcare professionals who cost organizations less. In
June 2015, the CAET launched a Leadership program to support
Enterostomal Therapists in making their leadership visible. This
1 year, 8 hours per week program was aligned with the “Leads
in a Caring Environment” leadership framework to support the
development of specialized nurse leaders within the healthcare
system. A unique learning experience was developed and
implemented.
A formal evaluation process will be conducted in July 2016
after the completion of the first program. Based on informal
feedback, we know that ET nurses gained by broadening their
perspectives in self-awareness and leadership styles and gained

monitor and objectively analyze the benefits of advanced
treatments such as HBOT, skin substitutes and NPWT
throughout the episode of care. User feedback reports
indicate that the use of LUNA may assist physicians
in making critical decisions along the care pathway, in
driving patient treatment compliance and in increasing
patient referrals.
Enluxtra, a Self-Adaptive Wound Dressing, is designed
to change its properties according to the continuously
changing feedback from underlying wound tissues.
Enluxtra dynamically balances the evolving wound
environment, providing hydration or absorption depending
on the instantaneous needs of wound and peri-wound skin.
Dry areas of the wound stay properly hydrated, fluid from
exuding areas is absorbed and locked into the dressing, and
peri-wound skin is protected from maceration.
