Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Good Afternoon everyone! Welcome to today’s Caring for Critters spotlight!
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
For those of you who are new and just joining us, each weekday from between now and December 19,
we will feature one (or two!) of the Wildlife Center’s animal ambassadors that are available for
sponsorship through our Caring for Critters program.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
To learn more about this great program, please visit:

Chapin Hardy, WCV:
We’ll spend 10-15 minutes talking about each animal to help you decide which animal(s) you should
adopt. If you’re already a sponsor, please feel free to share your favorite fun fact about “your” critter.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Well since it is a dreary day here in Waynesboro, Virginia, why don’t we brighten up today with a splash
of color?
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
With that clue, who do you think it could be?

AWWww, magnificent! Kids think she is gorgeous!
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Today we are shining the spotlight on Keeya, the Red-shouldered Hawk!
Comment From Shirley - Greensboro, NC
When I first learned about red-shouldered hawks after Keeya came, I figured out that we have a pair
that hangs out on our school campus.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Awesome!
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Keeya was found by a road in Hanover County in September 2013. Upon admission, the Wildlife Center
veterinary team found her to be extremely thin and dehydrated – Keeya had been unable to hunt and
care for herself for several days.

Comment From Izzy
Poor Keeya she looked so different then :(
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Radiographs revealed two fractures in her right wing – both the radius and ulna were fractured. Both
fractures were close to the hawk’s joints, and WCV vets could not pin the broken bones in surgery.

Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Keeya also had an injury to her left eye, leaving her with a significant blind spot.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
She began training to become an education animal ambassador in December 2013. While Keeya's blind
spot can cause her to be startled at times, she is a fairly calm and quiet Red-shouldered Hawk.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
In February, Keeya became an official member of the team.

Chapin Hardy, WCV:
She also needed a name. Keeya was named for the characteristic call of the Red-shouldered Hawk.

Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Even though Keeya has been an ambassador for the Wildlife Center for not even a year, she has been
one busy hawk. Since her debut as an ambassador, she has participated in more than 100 programs and
“met” more than 3,990 people.
Comment From Izzy
Keeya! She's one of my adopted critters and she went through a huge feather transformation! Now shes
a stunning lady :)
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Yes she did, and yes she is!
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
She took a brief break this summer, however, to molt her baby feathers. Passage birds [birds that are
less than one year old] look different from the adults.

Chapin Hardy, WCV:
During the molt, she looked … how to describe her? Disheveled? Rumpled?

Comment From Izzy
Think Keeya and Pignoli win the prize for most drastic molting photos :)
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
She now looks very striking with her red chest and shoulders and is quite the head turner.

Comment From Dave in Missouri
Hawks are so cool!
Comment From janeinstpete
Whoa, she is one big girl when on your gloves. Didn't realize they were that big.
Comment From Pat, NJ
She's a nice big girl too.
Comment From Izzy
Her adult look matches her fiery personality and spirit! Just think PEFA will have a drastic change just
like Keeya!
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Two weeks ago, Scott Turnmeyer, a photographer, came to the Center to take some photos of some of
our education ambassadors.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Needless to say, Keeya looked stunning in all of her photos. These photos are actually for purchase along
with some other education ambassador photos through Scott’s website:
http://turnmeyer.smugmug.com/Prints/Wildlife-Center-of-Virginia/
Comment From Dave in Missouri
Are female birds usually bigger than males?
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
In raptors the females are bigger.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
What’s also great about these photos is that 20% of the profits will be donated to the Wildlife Center. So
if you or a loved one are one of Keeya’s sponsors, this would make a great gift!
Comment From Izzy
Wow! Scott is talented and so generous! :)

If you haven’t already adopted Keeya, know that she is a great choice for adoption and if you are
interested in sponsoring her or any other education ambassadors, please visit:

Comment From Dave in Missouri
That is awesome of Scott!
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
If you adopt a critter, you or your gift recipient will receive a sponsorship packet including:
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
• The sponsored animal’s biography;
• A photo of the animal;
• Periodic email updates about your animal;
• Detailed information about the characteristic of the animal’s species; and
• A personalized certificate of sponsorship
Comment From David in VA.
And remember a CFC sponsorship gift is the gift that keeps on giving with periodic updates emailed out
throughout the year to you and the person gifted.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
Let me say (and maybe a few other people can attest) that the periodic emails are what make the
sponsorship fun through the entire “adoption” period.
Chapin Hardy, WCV:
You will learn about what your animal is up to … get a notification on their anniversary and/or birthday
… and might even get the “inside scoop” on some stuff!
Comment From Pat, NJ
A big shout out and thank you to Scott for his generosity.
Comment From Izzy
