Adjourned Submitted by Charlene Rivera Pony News August 2016 Car Show—Almost Here!!! Dear Pierce County Mustang Club Member, In 2007 my husband, Larry, and I joined Pierce County Mustang Club. We have been to a lot of cruises, car shows, general meetings, holiday gatherings, club picnics, Friday night dinners, executive committee meetings, car show meetings – you name it, we have been to it. We keep renewing our club membership due to the great members. I continue to be involved with the car show due to all the help we can give to PCMC charities. Every year Nancy, our club’s treasurer and membership director, gives out a club roster. I see a lot of names of members I know, some I have never met, and some I have not seen in a few years. Last year the car show committee set a goal to get our Founding/Charter members involved at the car show, we had 8 shows up! Most of them have not been to a show in over 10 years – they enjoyed seeing and meeting old and new members, they had a great time and promised to come back in 2016. Well, this year the car show committee has set a new goal, and we need your help! We are inviting YOU to come to the Pierce County Mustang Club All Mustang and Ford Show on August 14th at Griot’s Garage. You can stop by and say “Hi” and check out what PCMC is up to, we would love to see you. If you really want to - bring out the Mustang and show it. Come find me, I would love to put a face to a name. We all love to share and see the Mustangs. You joined PCMC for some reason – come to the car show (or any other event, there are a lot to choose from – check out the website at www.piercecountymustangclub.com) and hang out with us! Thanks for your time! Charlene Rivera 360-459-3993 [email protected] Pierce County Mustang Club Co-Car Show Chair Let us see what we can do about meeting this goal. Come to the show and find Heidi (she’ll have the camera) or check in at the “Tack Shack” to see how many of the 154 members we can get out for this event. TOO COOL EVENT John Clor the “world’s” leading Mustang II enthusiast is organizing the first ever Mustang II national gathering set for August 19-21 at Ford’s own Product Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan. It will be held in conjunction with the Mustang Owners Club of South Eastern Michigan’s annual Mustang Memories show as well as on the same weekend as Detroit’s famed Woodward Dream Cruise. As John says, “It just doesn’t get any better than that”. Pony News August 2016 Mustang of the Month Hank and Margie Deck 2014 Race Red Coupe My current Mustang is a 2014 3.7L, V6 Race Red Coupe I purchased in April, 2015. My son promptly christened her ‘Charlene’. I joined the PCMC a few months later. My wife, Margie, and I have enjoyed our time with the PCMC so far and look forward to future club events. My first Mustang was a 1966 3-speed black coupe I bought in 1969 when I was a student at Bowling Green University in Ohio. Over the years I’ve owned several sports cars including two Corvettes, a Chrysler Crossfire, and a Saturn Sky Convertible. In 1998, I purchased my second 1966 Mustang with the aim of restoring it; however, after several years of work on it, I had to let it go due a company transfer. In 2015, after driving a Lincoln MKZ for several years, I decided it was time to go back to the Mustang. ‘Charlene’ is a great car and I look forward to driving her for many years to come. Hank Deck PS—Congratulations on your selection as Mustang of the Month. We look forward to you, Margie, and “Charlene” joining us for many events in the future. Modified or Stock is sometimes a confusing topic as each show is a little different. I asked Charlene Rivera, our car show Co-Chair and she gave me some tips. I also, as usual, borrowed information from another Car Club Newsletter, Kitsap Mustang Club (with permission). The following are guidelines that may help you decide. However, as I have said, it varies from show to show so it is best to ask at each one. At some shows they use the guideline that if your car has three or more significant and visible items (examples listed below) then it should be registered in a modified class. Our show uses five. It is pretty standard that if your car is personalized, it is modified. Clubs also look at modifications differently with some counting engine modifications as individual mods and others counting dress-up modifications to the engine as one mod. Our club uses the guideline that what came out of the Ford Factory is stock. Some dealerships will add modifications. Our club uses a mix of Kitsap, Mustangs NW, Mustangs West, and MCA. Here are some guidelines to modifications: Paint – obvious custom paint jobs, including murals (i.e., flames, graphics, stripes, etc.) Body Work – all body alterations, addition of flares, spoilers, air dams, hood scoops (non-stock), ground effects, etc. (Note: a complete body kit, such as a Saleen kit, which includes front and rear spoilers and side skirts will put that Mustang automatically into the modified class) Under the Hood – Chrome dress up kits, plating or powder coating of parts, special wiring harness, non -stock coolers, non-stock superchargers/ turbochargers, blowers, nitrous Chrome – blacked out with color or black trim treatment or chrome removed and panels filled Interior – custom or aftermarket seats, custom upholstery work, custom steering wheels or consoles, gear shifter changes, additional (non-stock) tachometer or other gauges, roll bars or other related safety equipment. According to the Kitsap Mustang Club article, modification lists serve as a means to “Level the Playing Field” for all involved and is for guidance only. Everyone at one point or another will make a few modifications to their Mustang and there is nothing wrong with that. But, it is difficult to fairly judge a bone stock V-6 coupe against a GT with a Saleen Body Kit, Bullet Interior, over-sized aftermarket rims and tires, and a supercharger (or vice versa) in the same class. From what I have seen this seems to be true at most shows. So take stock of your car, talk to the club sponsoring the show you are entering, and mark your entrance accordingly. Have fun and enjoy showing your car. I am personally looking for the classification for the funniest sign…. Thank you to: KCM and Charlene Rivera for information for the article. (See the next page for the list of modifications for our show in August.) See you on the road...don’t forget to wave! Ideas for Future Articles: Send me your tips! We had members at the Vintage Races on the 2nd and JBLM on the 4th. We had quite a herd show up at the South Hill Panera to gallop up to Pacific Raceways for the Vintage Vehicle Races on Saturday, July 2nd. There were more than a dozen of us parked in the car corral representing Pierce County Mustang Club. We arrived early enough to claim prime spots to watch the races and catch up with each other. One of the racers was the cousin of club member, Bryan Zimbelman. It was even more exciting to have a “connection” with one of the racers on the track. (Continued on next page) Pony News August 2016 4th of July at Vintage Races and JBLM (continued) Whether they wandered the pits, checked out the vendors, watched the races from our vantage spot or walked across the track during heats, went out during the lunch break for parade laps or made donations to be a passenger in one of the professionally driven BMW’s, everyone had a great time. A big thank you to Tim Gwyn for organizing this fun annual event again this year. While a few members relaxed after the races, some cruised on out to JBLM for their annual car show on the 4th. The club had 5 cars at this event where Bill Norman took a 2nd Place. This show is like a country fair with cars and good food. There was a live band and lots of happy people. Thank you Jerry Murphy for the great pictures from both events and to Missy Willert for the Vintage Racing write-up. See even more of the photos on Photobucket which you can get access from our club website. Pony News August 2016 Mt. Saint Helens Cruise July 17 wasn’t special enough, their Mustang was so despondent that they would trade her for another vehicle to finish the cruise, that when they got home, the brakes were cool and they caught up and finished in the original Stang. Greg took some great shots at the photo spot. Lots more shots are on photobucket. Don’t forget to look. As we were traveling today along this gorgeous cruise, I had this “WOW” moment. It came as we were winding around the mountain and over the river across the bridges. I looked out in front of our car and in the rear view mirror and it was Mustangs as far as my eye could see. My eye may have missed a couple of stray SUV’s but it is known to do that. I just bins put together. thought “WOW, this is really cool.” It felt like it was something special as we all traveled along this great cruise that Greg Rob- We had 21 cars (all but one a Mustang) and lots of members and prospective members. We were able to stay together, for the most part, the entire trip with 4 stops, then lunch, then a photo opportunity, before the Observatory and heading home. The people in this club have always been a special draw. We had close to 40 people. Everyone looked to me like they were having a great time. As always, there were stories and adventures and food (always food). This time we brought our own picnics. Most of us did. We are putting a string on Lee’s lunch so that next time he makes one, it actually gets into the car with him. And Bill and Carol...it is something special when you leave a cruise part way through because of brake issues, go home to get another vehicle and catch up with us to continue the cruise. And if that PS—Too Good to leave out. Adventure with Mr. Ugly from Josh & Natasha: Mr. Ugly had a great cruise up to Mt. St. Helens. No issues at all. On the way back, about 40 miles outside of the park, my wife and I looked at each other as we both smelled fuel. I pulled over and verified that the main fuel line on top of the tank had ruptured. With no cell service, we were forced to push on. Less than a mile away, we started to spit and sputter. We found refuge in a private driveway with “no trespassing” signs and chickens everywhere. We were greeted by a helpful man with no tools. He offered me his driveway if I could find some tools. Shortly after, one of his buddies walked out and said that he had some tools. “Tools” was an exaggeration. He had a socket with no ratchet, a multi-tool, and a screwdriver. He offered to go get me some fuel line while I dropped the fuel tank. Within one hour, Mr. Ugly was back on the road and I smelled heavily of gasoline and chicken poo! We found this nice little barbecue joint with no bathroom. Me and the wife ate a delicious dinner, while Mr. Ugly soaked up the sun. The rest of the drive was uneventful, thankfully! Pony News August 2016 FNDO—Buttered Biscuit in Bonney Lake I have never seen so much food!!!!! I was going to take a picture of Karen’s Cinnamon Roll French Toast, but my mouth kept watering and my arm wanted to grab a fork rather than the camera. YUMMMMM. No one left hungry from this FNDO. We had 15 members show up and most of them left with Lakewood Mini Show On a mostly cloudy Saturday, 29 club members came out to Lakewood Ford to show their cars. This was our biggest turn out so far. The staff at Lakewood Ford whipped up a fantastic BBQ lunch for us. Members had the afternoon to catch up with each other while customers and employees looked over our cars and voted for their favorite one. In addition, we had 7 more register for the car show and gained a new member with a potential of 2 more. July 22 food for the next few days as well as what they ate this night. For me, this is going to mean an awful lot more time on the stationary bike. See you next month at Ben Dew’s on 6th Ave. July 23 As with everything we do, no event just happens. The Lakewood Ford Members Only Mini Show was a success because so many members came out with their cars and helped us show Lakewood Ford how much we appreciate how much they do for our club. So a big thank you to Lakewood Ford for putting on this show for us.
