2012 July • August • September Engineering Season by John “Jake” Greear, PE, TSPE President Well fellow TSPE-ers, it’s that time of the year again, when we turn the leadership reigns over to new faces at both the State and Chapter levels. The goal behind this annual turnover is to share the responsibilities of running this great society and to have an ever-evolving list of ideas as to how we make it better. As of July 1st, I am one such “new face.” I will be taking over the State President’s role from the highly capable John Cole, PE, and am both honored and flattered to have been nominated for such an important position within our association. We have much to do and I hope not to disappoint. Thank you, John Cole, for your service to TSPE as President last year. With all of that said, let’s get to where I see our focus needing to be. Our goals are numerous and range from the protection of public health, safety and welfare, to promoting engineering competence, to stimulating the growth and respect of our great profession. In order to help us achieve these goals, TSPE has several committees whose duty it is to not only keep us from forgetting our priorities but to come up with new strategies of attack. Serving as President-Elect during the past year has given me the opportunity to also serve as the Chair for the Society Development Committee. So for starters, I’d like to focus on an issue that my eyes have been opened to of late... the importance of membership. Membership is “important” for many reasons. It’s who we work for and answer to, it’s the backing that makes us relevant, its dues make up more continued on page 3... Reflections and Collaboration By Candy Toler, Executive Director of TSPE and ACEC of TN In February 2000, TSPE, ACEC, ASCE, ASHRAE, IEEE, and SAME had a dream to stimulate the interest of young people in math and science and help develop 21st century engineers. We launched a capital campaign to raise over $1.8 million to build the Tennessee Engineering Center (TEC), which is an addition to Adventure Science Center. The TEC includes a large meeting space, offices for TSPE and ACEC of TN, an archive area for the engineering associations, a conference room, and an engineering exhibit to educate young people visiting Adventure Science Center. ACEC and TSPE have joined forces with the American Society of Civil Engineers to have an annual meeting together. Ten years ago, in June 2002, the dream became a reality and we moved our offices into the new space, engineering associations started having board meetings in the conference room and lunch meetings in what is now called Jack Wood Hall. Adventure Science Center has become a favorite place for meetings because of its welcoming environment and space availability. Jack Wood’s enthusiasm and tenacity made a dream come true and inspired new relationships that are paying dividends 10 years later. Thank you, Jack. The combined efforts of the six engineering associations also increased communication and collaboration among them to the point that, today, Committees of the three groups are planning a fun meeting with an interesting schedule of education sessions. There will be four different engineering tracks: civil, environmental and structural; geotechnical; transportation and engineering management; and electrical, mechanical and industrial. We hope you plan to attend the Annual Meeting September 13-14 at the Embassy Suites Murfreesboro. The schedule is included in this newsletter and posted on the website. Stoltenberg, PE Clinton Tyler Swires Engineering season continued from page 1 than half of our annual operating revenue, and it’s this group we need to continuously grow, groom and push to excel. The first step in this process is to increase membership. In order to achieve this, it is our responsibility to get the word out to Tennessee’s engineers about what we do for them, as well as society at-large, and encourage them to join us in action. Show them that we are valuable for professional networking and continuing education (I’m sure that, like me, many of you only saw this side of TSPE at first too) to get them in the door. However, our work does not stop there. We are a pretty shallow group if that’s all we strive to be. Once we get them in the door, we have to keep new members. In order to do this, I believe we need to show them the depth of our value and engage them in societal processes. It’s being involved at this level that generates the true interest we need to sustain a successful leadership pool, allows us to creatively continue to accomplish our goals and gives members the desire to “stay on board” when there are other distractions, time demands and economic strains. Please help me and our new Society Development Committee Chair, PresidentElect Patrick Smith, PE, come up with innovative ways to reach out to new members, show them TSPE’s value, and get them involved in society business. Thank you and I look forward to a successful coming year! Support the Tennessee Engineering Foundation The Tennessee Engineering Foundation (TEF) was created in 1986 to advance and support the engineering profession in Tennessee. TEF raises funds for scholarships and other K-12 STEM education support activities such as MATHCOUNTS – the primary source of funding for these initiatives is the TEF Luncheon, which will be on September 13. The TEF is a charitable, educational, and scientific organization (501(c)(3) and contributions are deductible to the extent allowed by law. We hope that you will plan to attend this year’s luncheon. Information on purchasing tickets is included on the enclosed brochure. TEF scholarship winners are: Eric Collins (Brentwood), a rising senior in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, won the $4,000 Dorothy and Arthur Crouch Memorial Scholarship, which is funded by the Ladies Auxiliary and the TSPE Nashville Chapter through the Tennessee Engineering Foundation. Emily Epperson (Sequatchie), a rising senior in civil engineering at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville was awarded $3,500. Jesse West (Chattanooga), a rising senior in mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, won a $3,500 scholarship. In 2011-12, the TEF awarded scholarships to three engineering students because of a successful fundraising luncheon in August 2011 at which TDOT Commissioner Schroer was the keynote speaker. 3 VOLKERT ROSS BRYAN ASSOCIATES, INC. Lipscomb’s Master of Science in Engineering Management Our Master of Science in Engineering Management is the only degree of its kind in the area. It’s not just another MBA program, but a degree designed by engineers for engineers who are ready to move out of the technical field and learn what it really takes to drive the business of engineering. You’ll study three areas: ethical leadership, business acumen, and operational/technical management of engineering operations, taught by advanced degree faculty who know the industry inside and out. You’ll learn how to solve complex, multi-variable technical and business problems through real-world, hands-on experiences. And you’ll become a better manager and stronger leader for upper management positions in a variety of technically focused organizations. Our M.S. in Engineering Management is a 36-hour program which can be completed in just 12 months. We’ve created evening classes for those with busy, working schedules and we offer financial aid packages if your company doesn’t have a tuition reimbursement program. As part of the inaugural class only, you’ll receive a substantial tuition discount, too.
