If the Frankton arm of Lake Wakatipu was not so shallow and allowed big old
steamers like the Earnslaw to get all the way up to the beach without getting stuck,
Frankton could likely have been the CBD of the Wakatipu district. Originally, in the
1860’s, it was Queenstown Bay’s deep water that defined it as the heart. It became
the heart but was never the centre. Frankton is the centre. Sunny, flat, vast and
convenient. Today, in 2014, the local population, no longer reliant on lake transport,
have embraced Frankton as the centre of the Basin and therefore it thrives as a
shopping and industrial hub.
However as far as tourism is concerned, Frankton is in my opinion nothing more
than an arrival and departure point. For a short term holiday maker, why would you
need to visit the local lawn mower shop or hardware store? What a tourist wants is
what the Queenstown CBD offers. Cafes, bars, restaurants, beautiful lake views,
boutique shopping. In other words picture perfect excitement and entertainment.
Of course both business districts will disagree with me and claim to be everything
to everyone, or close to. And fair enough because Frankton is worthy of a visit from
a tourist and the Queenstown CBD has things to offer locals that Frankton does not.
So while the announcement that resource consent has been granted for a supersized supermarket in Frankton is fantastic news, the Queenstown Chamber of
Commerce’s announcement that they will lead a drive to improve the Queenstown
CBD is equally grand.
To be quite frank, the CBD is tired, shabby and in desperate need of some love. It
is embarrassing when you take a step back and look closely at the picture. It is far
from perfect. Exactly what the Chamber of Commerce propose will come out in due
course, but what I would like to see prioritized for a start, is adequate street cleaning
and rubbish collection.

Should a shop owner be allowed to stack their pile of cardboard boxes and general
rubbish out for collection at any time of the day, regardless of actual pick up time?
Take a walk down Beach or Camp Street and see what I mean. It’s all good if
the Chamber want to advocate for a downtown conference centre as part of their
master plan for CBD revitalisation. It is their job as a business development
organisation. But I hope they don’t lose sight of the simple things that can make a
world of difference. Put yourself in the shoes of a high value visitor. What would they
think of the general level of presentation?
There is a well-known saying “look after the pennies and the dollars will take care of
themselves”. A similar phrase could be used in the case of the Queenstown CBD.
Take care of the little things - striving for the perfect picture, and more business will
follow.

Council Snippets
Winter Driving
Frosty mornings often mean icy roads, and as we move into winter it’s
time to think about safe driving over the colder months. This means
checking your chains fit your tyres properly, knowing how to put them
on, and where to get information about road conditions. QLDC provides
an early morning road update seven days a week through the winter.
You can get these by following @queenstownlakes on Twitter; “liking”
Queenstown Lakes District Council on Facebook, or signing up for our
emailed reports – just email [email protected] and put “road report”
in the subject line.
Visitor Accommodation Amnesty
Property owners who rent out their houses and holiday homes on a shortterm basis for visitor accommodation have until the end of this month to
take advantage of a QLDC amnesty before the Council starts following
up on unregistered rental agreements. Property owners can check online
whether they need to register or apply for consent, www.qldc.govt.nz
Seeking your views
If you’re interested in the future management of the Council’s holiday
parks, have a look at the information on our website and consider
making a submission. The Council is looking at entering into long-term
management leases on most of the holiday parks. Information is on-line

QLDC is trialling a new after-hours resource planning service aimed at
people who have trouble getting away from their day job to seek advice on
new projects. A planner is on duty every Wednesday night from 5-9pm to
discuss planning issues, including the resource consent requirements for
new business ventures, building extensions and visitor accommodation

Wherever you live, remember to put your rubbish and recycling out for
collection by 8am. We sometimes field complaints from people who miss
the weekly collection because they aim to put their bins or bags out just
before the truck passes their gate. But the collecting time can vary from
week to week so remember: “Out at the gate by 8” is the simple rule.

the food safety grading of the restaurants, cafés, hotels and fast food
outlets in your area. QLDC inspectors carry out regular checks of all
commercial food premises and the results of these inspections are now
on line. Each premises receives a grading and the good news is that the
vast majority of commercial kitchens were assessed as either Excellent

Oops – most sewage spills are preventable
Do your bit to stop spills from our sewerage system. Never pour cooking
fat, oil or grease down the drain. When it cools, it congeals in the pipes
and causes blockages and overflows. Likewise, disposable nappies, kitty
litter and the contents of your fishbowl should never be flushed down the
toilet.

Can I, through your pages, congratulate Mr
Porter for his perseverance in having the tenacity
to follow through on his proposed Shotover
Park development . This will allow Queenstown
residents and visitors to enjoy the benefits of
some much needed competition in retail grocery
and other shopping sectors.
Contrast this with a shameful local council that
has wasted hundreds of thousands of ratepayers
dollars attempting to put a stop to what amounts
to a real economic need and befit need to the
local community.

As a parent I am very concerned for my kids
when it comes to using new medias such as
Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram etc.
If it would be up to me, I would ban them
from using them. There’s enough outdoors in
Queenstown for them to entertain themselves
healthily without being poisoned with those
medias.
Those medias are very much into our kids’
lives and I don’t want my kids to feel excluded
from their friends by banning them. However

What’s the go with the unwanted newspapers being
thrown near people’s driveways? Over half just sit
there and rot, until someone takes the initiative to throw
them in the bin. Seems an awful waste, and a shame for

We got a letter from the airport a few months ago stating
the airport (QLDC and Auckland airport) would be
assisting us with 75% of the cost to insulate for noise
reduction in our Frankton home in the coming year.
This is not improvements to the house, but genuine
insulation of the existing home. Last week we got
another letter saying the first offer was incorrect and
now are only offering 75% of mechanical ventilation.
What even is Mechanical ventilation, and who is
considering this an option for noise reduction? They
must of done their maths after putting out the first letter,
now realise the costs are huge and are backing down.
Cheap way of telling one story to get the night flights
and extended noise area approved, then swapping it
for fools gold!

Arrowtown continued their unbeaten run in the Central Otago Premier
Grade competition with another comprehensive performance on Saturday.
In the team’s first defence of the White Horse Cup since pinching the
prized trophy from Wakatipu a few weeks ago, The A-Team despatched
challengers Cromwell 32-7 and sent them off back down the Gorge with
their tails between their legs.
With a couple of away games coming up against Alexandra this Saturday
and Manitoto the next, the Cup is safely locked away until Upper Clutha
come knocking in mid-June.
