I hope you found the numbers informative. You have chosen your Board of Directors to protect your investment and make this community a place that is attractive, safe and provides you with activities that enable you to be active and alert. The seven members you have selected to lead this community set the policies of Sun City Aliante, and Community Manager Dr. Arnie Snow and his staff implement those policies. In concert, we hope that you are happy and pleased with how our community represents you. The Board has many responsibilities, and not surprisingly, you also have one that I’d like to discuss. Assistant Activities & Fitness Director Our CC&Rs have rules that you agreed to follow when you bought into this lifestyle. What wasn’t detailed was your responsibility to be an informed, involved resident. This is an extremely important item, and it doesn’t mean that you have to spend a great deal of time fulfilling this obligation. Activities & Fitness Department Office Manager Lori Daniels - 702-638-5065 [email protected] Your Board does not make decisions in a vacuum. We want homeowner input, and one way you can do this is to attend the monthly Board of Director’s meetings. These are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Vista Room. I am sad to report that we only have about one percent (1%) of the community attending these meetings. There are six normally scheduled committees, and all welcome visitors except the Covenants Committee, which is not open to the public. The committee members have been approved by the Board of Directors to make recommendations to the Board on matters that pertain to the community at large. I think you will be pleasantly surprised about what you can learn by attending these meetings. The dates and times are published in “The Breeze” and in weekly e-blasts, so you can easily schedule your attendance. While I am on the subject of committees, there has been a vacancy on the Communications Committee for months. I’d love to report that some involved homeowner has stepped forward. A question you need to ask yourself is, “What expectations do you have of the Board members you selected?” If your expectations aren’t being met, you need President’s Message continues from page 27 The Breeze is a monthly publication of Sun City Aliante Community Association, Inc. C O M Activities & Fitness Director FROM THE PRESIDENT ASSOCIATION NEWS Dear Residents: It is very important to keep your brain active. Here are some simple exercises that take a few minutes out of your day and help prevent memory loss. W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M - T H E B R E E Z E The obvious one: play games. Any board game is OK such as Clue, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, Monopoly, Pictionary, to name a few. Card games are also very important or computer games. It is important to have your brain do new things and not just do the same thing over and over like playing Bridge, or crossword puzzles. Most importantly, have fun while exercising the brain. Switch it up. Here is a fun way, but challenging way to exercise the brain: If you wear your watch on the right hand, switch it to the left. Every week change your watch from wrist to wrist. Teach the brain to look at everyday things differently. Even think about a different way to drive to church, grocery store and work—get out of the hohum of doing the same thing the same way every day. Stop being a creature of habit. This one is guaranteed results! Switch sides. Try this one: If you are right-handed, try writing with your left and vice a versa. Shave with your other hand or blow dry your hair with the non-dominant hand and see what has to happen for the brain to complete this exercise. Change hands with the phone. If you always talk on the phone with the same ear, then try the other one. The brain hears differently in each ear. Go back in time. Pick an activity that you used to do in the past like playing jacks, shooting pool or maybe even jump rope or hula hoop. Don’t be surprised if you need some extra practice. Most of all have fun and keep with the new activity until your skills return. Learn a new activity. How about line dancing? It requires you to remember the steps – which takes mind-body-coordination and it’s fun. Any type of dancing accomplishes the same memory goal: learn and remember new steps, body positions and techniques. Other new endeavors: golf, chess, or take an adult education class at the local community college. Practice active listening. Sit in the living room while watching TV and close your eyes. Use all the senses to understand the world around you. After the program has concluded, then go back in your mind and state how you felt and repeat what your heard. Paying attention without any other interruptions is very important — try not to multi-task. Be good to yourself. Eat healthy foods—add nuts, berries and fish rich in omega-3 oils. Try drinking green tea in the afternoon for a boost. Give up those snacks rich in carbs and fats. In addition, walking is one of the best forms of exercise and doesn’t cost one penny. So get off the coach and dust off those sneakers and head out for a brisk walk. You will be amazed at how simple it is to exercise your brain and stimulate neurons and dendrites on the opposite side of your brain. Source: AgingCare.com. Enjoy the great October weather, Lynn Garlock-Wright Activities & Fitness Director 4 - October 2015 BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE Dear Residents: Do you know Sun City Aliante has a community website? If you do, when was the last time you checked it out? These might seem like silly questions, but many residents don’t know we have a website. Do you realize there are two separate “faces” on the website – an access for residents and a different access for nonresidents? The non-resident “face” gives folks who don’t live here an opportunity to view recent copies of The Breeze, advertisers and information about the facilities available to residents (a selling point if someone is considering buying a home in our community). It also provides information on the many activities available to residents. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without listings of homes for sale or rent in Sun City Aliante, contact information for Realtors, who specialize in the community, and basic information about businesses in the area. If you are a resident of Sun City Aliante and haven’t explored the website, visit the home page www.suncityaliantenlv.com and complete and submit a login request form. You will soon have access to a “whole new world” of information about Sun City Aliante. When you login as a “Resident,” you will see activities and fitness calendars, community event photos, a community address book, documents and forms, message boards, a place to sign up for e-mail alerts and to rate local businesses (one of my wife’s favorites) and much, much more. If you’ve tried to use the website, but found it a little hard to navigate, your suggestions/comments have been heard. The Communications Committee has undertaken the task of overhauling the website to make it easier on the eyes and easier to find things. One more question – do you read The Breeze? If you are reading this article, the answer is obviously “YES!” I would like to ask you to check with your neighbors to ensure they are reading it. There is a wealth of information between its beautiful covers; so “tell the world (or at least your neighborhood)” to check it out. R. Wayne Headrick, Board Secretary ASSOCIATION NEWS BOD NOTICE This Notice is distributed according to NRS116.31083. Take a step back and look at the front of your house from across the street. What do you see? Are there bushes blocking the view of your entryway, front doors or windows, where someone might hide? Are shrubs growing up so high that they block the view of your A/C unit? Recently, several A/C units were stolen from vacant homes in the community. It’s time to be proactive in protecting your property. Keep your trees, bushes and shrubs neatly trimmed, so when Neighborhood Watch, Securitas or the NLVPD are on patrol, they can have a clear view of your property. There is another easy thing you can do to help protect your home and street. If you find a burned-out street light on your block, don’t assume someone else will call it in. Take just a minute to call the North Las Vegas Street Light Department at 702-633-1264 and report the location. For more information regarding the Sun City Aliante Neighborhood Watch Program, contact our Coordinator Jim Blossey at jimandpatb@ embarqmail.com and 775-530-5119. S C A L N L V . C O M - T H E B R E E Z E Many people wonder about cutting off the yucca’s flower stalk after the blooms have faded. The flower stalk can be pruned off at any time, even before it is done blooming. Simply cut the stalk off with a sharp pair of pruning shears or cutter at about 3 to 4 inches above where the stalk emerges from the main stem. As with all yucca plants, care and pruning is very easy. It may seem drastic, but I assure you that your yucca plant considers this to be a very normal thing. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Would you like to log onto the Sun City Aliante Website? The address is http://www.suncityaliantenlv.com/ login.asp. If you plan to hire a company or an individual to complete a project on your home or property, it would be a good idea to discuss SCAL construction conduct before they get started. A homeowner should make sure all contractors and subcontractors control the conduct of their employees; loud music, profanity and other disorderly behavior are not tolerated by the association. Visible construction warning signs and warning cones should be prominently displayed in the construction area and parking should be discussed. Remember, it’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure all contractors and subcontractors maintain the work site in a clean and orderly manner at all times. Don’t forget to talk to your neighbors about your construction project before it begins; they will appreciate it, and of course, always have your approved Architectural Review Committee (ARC) application on hand. If you plan to do work on the outside of your home, you must submit an application to the ARC prior to the meeting. The committee meets twice a month to review applications. Almost all requests require you to complete a plot plan, which we can provide, and some requests require pictures and even samples. If you have questions about your project, you are invited to attend the ARC workshop held on the Thursday prior to each ARC meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista Room. Remember to turn your application and plot plan in prior to the meeting, so we can place it on the agenda. The ARC will meet on October 2 and 16 at 8:30 in the Vista Room. If you haven’t visited the Mezzo Bistro & Wine, you are in for a real treat. This is one of my very favorite restaurants in Las Vegas. Inspired by the design and feel of a Napa Valley Winery, Mezzo Bistro has been recognized by www.TripAdvisor.com as a 2014 Winner of their Certificate of Excellence. Conveniently located on 4275 North Rancho Drive, far from the hustle and bustle of The Strip, you will be delighted with the ambiance of the restaurant, the diverse menu, featuring classic and contemporary Italian dishes and wine selections. For our appetizer, we enjoyed the “Mezzo Sampler,” which offered yummy samplings of tender fried calamari served with a marinara “secret sauce,” stuffed portabella mushrooms and mouthwatering, fresh tomato brochette piled over grilled Italian bread. And that was just the beginning! A few minutes later, Kitchen Manger Dennis Hill came over to our table to tell us about the specials and find out if we were enjoying our meal. Then we were greeted by the Executive Chef Eder Hernandez. This led to an interesting conversation about their previous experience in Las Vegas and how Mezzo’s prided itself on using original Italian recipes from the various provinces of Italy. Although we felt like we could not possibly eat another bite after our meal, our waiter insisted we try one of their delicious desserts. We finally acquiesced to ordering Crème Brule. We all had a sampling and agreed that it was worth the extra calories. The evening was fabulous from start to finish. I suggest you think of Mezzo Bistro & Wine the next time you want to enjoy an authentic Italian meal in a romantic setting. Just ask for Kelly Richards or Sean Elefante, and they’ll make sure your experience is memorable. For reservations, call 702-944-8880. Mezzo Bistro recently celebrated its 4th anniversary and has become a local’s favorite under the tutelage of owners, Richards and Elefante, who are often found in the restaurant greeting customers. The bistro is open Monday–Saturday 11 a.m. -10 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, visit www.mezzobistro.com. I hope you come to love Mezzo Bistro as much as I do! www.AskAdamGoodman.com According to a recent Urban Institute study as well as several other sources, the number one cause of financial ruin in your retirement years is a long term care illness. Why? Well, because it is likely to happen and the cost of care is so expensive. So, one of the biggest decisions you will make in your retirement years is how to protect your nest egg against this risk and pay for this care. What is the optimal decision factoring in taxes and liquidity of assets? New studies by the National Association of Health Underwriters and Medicare have suggested that more than 70% of all retirees who live to 65 years of age will need some form of long term care in retirement. That number is simply staggering, and according to a recent study by Genworth, the national average cost for a semi-private room nursing home stay in the United States is $80,300. Home care, which is what most people prefer, can be costly too. When you couple the odds and cost, you can really see why it is so important to have a plan in place to pay for this care. Unfortunately, Medicare and personal health insurance policies do not cover the cost of long term care. So, the bottom line is that you need to find a way to pay for this probable risk without ruining your retirement plan. Fortunately, and contrary to popular belief, there are many ways and options to pay for a long term care illness. To learn of these ways and options so you can make the proper decision, visit our website at www.AskAdamGoodman.com, attend our monthly lunch & learns held in the SCAL community center, or to discuss your specific concerns contact me at 702-462-7233 or [email protected] Investment Advisory Services offered through Brookstone Capital Management LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor. Surprisingly, he was raving about his meal. I ordered one of the specials of the day… Blackened Shrimp served with Pasta Risoto, and I was not disappointed. It melted in my mouth. Delicious! Wealth Optimization & Protection Strategist T H E When it came to the entrée, it was really a hard decision to make. The menu offered a wide variety of pasta dishes, chicken, veal, pork, fish and steak entrees. One friend ordered Frutti Di Mare, a combination of clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp and salmon cooked in a sherry sauce with herbs tossed in linguini. She gave me a sample and it was scrumptious! My other friend ordered the Chicken Parmesan and Penne Pasta. He raved about his meal. ADAM GOODMAN - All of the salad options were inviting. We decided to order Caprese with imported buffalo mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar (my favorite) and the Caesar Salad with hearts of romaine, homemade croutons and shaved parmegiano… both were tasty. CUSTOMIZED COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M One of the restaurant owners, Sean Elefante, welcomed us as we arrived and was happy to show us around the restaurant. After reviewing the notable wine list of some 100 boutique wines, my date and I and two close friends ordered a bottle of Norma Jean Pinot Noir and a La Crème Chardonnay; both were delicious. The Big Decision Americans may be optimistic in general, but when it comes to retirement security many people have their doubts. When I sit down with someone for a meeting for the first time, one of the most common questions that I get asked is, “Are we on track for our retirement?”, or, “Is my retirement plan secure?” This is for both pre-retirees who are nearing retirement and for retirees who want to make sure their plan is going to work. So, what about you? Are you on track and confident for a successful retirement?
