Message From The President
Warren Geller, President, SCAL HOA
Board of Directors
Hello Neighbors:
For the past several months, I have reported
on the demographics of our community. I
hope you found the numbers informative. You
have chosen your Board of Directors to protect
your investment and make this community a
place that is attractive, safe and provides you
with activities that enable you to be active
and alert. The seven members you have selected to lead this community set
the policies of Sun City Aliante, and Community Manager Dr. Arnie Snow and
his staff implement those policies. In concert, we hope that you are happy
and pleased with how our community represents you. The Board has many
responsibilities, and not surprisingly, you also have one that I’d like to discuss.
Assistant Activities & Fitness Director
Our CC&Rs have rules that you agreed to follow when you bought into this
lifestyle. What wasn’t detailed was your responsibility to be an informed,
involved resident. This is an extremely important item, and it doesn’t mean that
you have to spend a great deal of time fulfilling this obligation.

Your Board does not make decisions in a vacuum. We want homeowner input,
and one way you can do this is to attend the monthly Board of Director’s
meetings. These are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in
the Vista Room. I am sad to report that we only have about one percent (1%) of
the community attending these meetings.

Another way you can become knowledgeable is to attend monthly committee
meetings. There are six normally scheduled committees, and all welcome
visitors except the Covenants Committee, which is not open to the public. The
committee members have been approved by the Board of Directors to make
recommendations to the Board on matters that pertain to the community
at large. I think you will be pleasantly surprised about what you can learn
by attending these meetings. The dates and times are published in “The
Breeze” and in weekly e-blasts, so you can easily schedule your attendance.
While I am on the subject of committees, there has been a vacancy on the
Communications Committee for months. I’d love to report that some involved
homeowner has stepped forward.
A question you need to ask yourself is, “What expectations do you have of the
Board members you selected?” If your expectations aren’t being met, you need

We are a very transparent Board, and you can observe our thought process
in making decisions involving how we spend our money, as well as what we
are doing to make our community better. You can also personally observe
who voted in favor or against an issue. If you’d prefer to contact us using
the internet, you can direct your comments by sending an email to board@

ASSOCIATION NEWS
Dear Residents:
It is very important to keep your brain
active. Here are some simple exercises
that take a few minutes out of your day
and help prevent memory loss.
W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M

B R E E Z E
The obvious one: play games. Any
board game is OK such as Clue, Are You
Smarter Than a 5th Grader, Monopoly,
Pictionary, to name a few. Card games
are also very important or computer
games. It is important to have your
brain do new things and not just do
the same thing over and over like
playing Bridge, or crossword puzzles. Most importantly, have fun
while exercising the brain.
Switch it up. Here is a fun way, but challenging way to exercise the
brain: If you wear your watch on the right hand, switch it to the left.
Every week change your watch from wrist to wrist. Teach the brain
to look at everyday things differently. Even think about a different
way to drive to church, grocery store and work—get out of the hohum of doing the same thing the same way every day. Stop being a
creature of habit. This one is guaranteed results!
Switch sides. Try this one: If you are right-handed, try writing with
your left and vice a versa. Shave with your other hand or blow dry
your hair with the non-dominant hand and see what has to happen
for the brain to complete this exercise. Change hands with the
phone. If you always talk on the phone with the same ear, then try
the other one. The brain hears differently in each ear.
Go back in time. Pick an activity that you used to do in the past like
playing jacks, shooting pool or maybe even jump rope or hula hoop.
Don’t be surprised if you need some extra practice. Most of all have
fun and keep with the new activity until your skills return.
Learn a new activity. How about line dancing? It requires you to
remember the steps – which takes mind-body-coordination and it’s
fun. Any type of dancing accomplishes the same memory goal: learn
and remember new steps, body positions and techniques. Other
new endeavors: golf, chess, or take an adult education class at the
local community college.
Practice active listening. Sit in the living room while watching
TV and close your eyes. Use all the senses to understand the world
around you. After the program has concluded, then go back in your
mind and state how you felt and repeat what your heard. Paying
attention without any other interruptions is very important — try
not to multi-task.
Be good to yourself. Eat healthy foods—add nuts, berries and
fish rich in omega-3 oils. Try drinking green tea in the afternoon
for a boost. Give up those snacks rich in carbs and fats. In addition,
walking is one of the best forms of exercise and doesn’t cost one
penny. So get off the coach and dust off those sneakers and head
out for a brisk walk.
You will be amazed at how simple it is to exercise your brain and
stimulate neurons and dendrites on the opposite side of your brain.

BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE
Dear Residents:
Do you know Sun City Aliante has a
community website? If you do, when was
the last time you checked it out? These
might seem like silly questions, but many
residents don’t know we have a website.
Do you realize there are two separate
“faces” on the website – an access for
residents and a different access for nonresidents?
The non-resident “face” gives folks
who don’t live here an opportunity to view recent copies of The
Breeze, advertisers and information about the facilities available
to residents (a selling point if someone is considering buying a
home in our community). It also provides information on the many
activities available to residents. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete
without listings of homes for sale or rent in Sun City Aliante, contact
information for Realtors, who specialize in the community, and basic
information about businesses in the area.
If you are a resident of Sun City Aliante and haven’t explored the
website, visit the home page www.suncityaliantenlv.com and
complete and submit a login request form. You will soon have access
to a “whole new world” of information about Sun City Aliante.
When you login as a “Resident,” you will see activities and fitness
calendars, community event photos, a community address book,
documents and forms, message boards, a place to sign up for e-mail
alerts and to rate local businesses (one of my wife’s favorites) and
much, much more.
If you’ve tried to use the website, but found it a little hard to
navigate, your suggestions/comments have been heard. The
Communications Committee has undertaken the task of overhauling
the website to make it easier on the eyes and easier to find things.
One more question – do you read The Breeze? If you are reading this
article, the answer is obviously “YES!” I would like to ask you to check
with your neighbors to ensure they are reading it. There is a wealth
of information between its beautiful covers; so “tell the world (or at
least your neighborhood)” to check it out.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
According to the North Las Vegas Police
Department (NLVPD), one of the many
things we can do to make our homes safer
involves a little yard work. Take a step back
and look at the front of your house from
across the street. What do you see? Are
there bushes blocking the view of your
entryway, front doors or windows, where
someone might hide? Are shrubs growing up so high that they
block the view of your A/C unit?
Recently, several A/C units were stolen from vacant homes in the
community. It’s time to be proactive in protecting your property.
Keep your trees, bushes and shrubs neatly trimmed, so when
Neighborhood Watch, Securitas or the NLVPD are on patrol, they can
have a clear view of your property.
There is another easy thing you can do to help protect your home
and street. If you find a burned-out street light on your block, don’t
assume someone else will call it in. Take just a minute to call the
North Las Vegas Street Light Department at 702-633-1264 and report
the location.

Watch Program, contact our Coordinator Jim Blossey at jimandpatb@

Many people wonder about cutting off the
yucca’s flower stalk after the blooms have
faded. The flower stalk can be pruned
off at any time, even before it is done
blooming. Simply cut the stalk off with a
sharp pair of pruning shears or cutter at
about 3 to 4 inches above where the stalk
emerges from the main stem. As with
all yucca plants, care and pruning is very
easy. It may seem drastic, but I assure you
that your yucca plant considers this to be
a very normal thing.

If you plan to hire a company or an individual to complete a project
on your home or property, it would be a good idea to discuss SCAL
construction conduct before they get started. A homeowner should
make sure all contractors and subcontractors control the conduct of
their employees; loud music, profanity and other disorderly behavior
are not tolerated by the association. Visible construction warning
signs and warning cones should be prominently displayed in the
construction area and parking should be discussed. Remember,
it’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure all contractors and
subcontractors maintain the work site in a clean and orderly manner
at all times. Don’t forget to talk to your neighbors about your
construction project before it begins; they will appreciate it, and of
course, always have your approved Architectural Review Committee
(ARC) application on hand.
If you plan to do work on the outside of your home, you must submit
an application
to the ARC
prior to the
meeting. The
committee
meets twice
a month
to review
applications.
Almost all
requests
require you
to complete a plot plan, which we can provide, and some requests
require pictures and even samples. If you have questions about your
project, you are invited to attend the ARC workshop held on the
Thursday prior to each ARC meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista
Room. Remember to turn your application and plot plan in prior to
the meeting, so we can place it on the agenda. The ARC will meet on
October 2 and 16 at 8:30 in the Vista Room.

Tee It Up

By Paul Cox, PGA
Welcome Back
It is that time of year again!
The Bermuda grass has gone
to sleep, and we just finished
laying the over seed Rye grass
for the winter. As you know, the
course was closed from September 8 through September 24, and
now we are back in business. As you get ready for the winter season,
it’s a good time to get back to the practice range, chipping green or
a practice green, and flex those muscles so you are ready for another
great golf season.
“Training material must be selected in such a way that each exercise
could to the maximum be brought nearer to those movements an
athlete makes during play. Whether he squeezes out, shoves the barbell,
practices with an exercise machine to stretch the muscles in his hands,
jumps or runs. The hockey elements must be present even in playing
basketball, soccer and other play exercises.”
Golf Stretch #5: Hamstring Stretch - Lie flat on your back with
body extended. Lift one leg into the air and hold the back of your
thigh with your hands. Pull your leg toward your chest while keeping
the other leg flat to the ground. Hold the stretch and then release it.
Repeat, alternating legs.
I look forward to seeing you now that we have reopened the practice
tee here at Aliante Golf Club, and I look forward to helping you
improve your skills and your enjoyment of the game. This is our club,
our community, and I’m glad to be a part of it,

Stretching your golf muscles is a great thing to do anytime. All you

Emergency responders may not always be able to reach you quickly

Are you aware of the recent and upcoming reductions in lifetime
benefits for new annuities? Did you know that you have options
available before the changes go into effect?
Join Adam Goodman of Goodman Lifetime Wealth Strategies on

Do you really understand what
benefits Medicare Parts A and

explored what other options
under Medicare, such as
supplemental plans C, D, F, would
provide? How do the premiums for these plans differ? How do you
know which supplemental is better for you? Does Medicare cover
nursing home care and long term health care?
Matthew Snow, a representative of Banker’s Life, will be hand to
answer these questions and to help you understand the differences
in Medicare plans.
In addition, he will also discuss Long Term and Short Term care.
Demographic studies show seven out of 10 seniors will eventually
need assistance in their home or an assisted living facility. What are
the advantages of having a Long Term or Short Term Policy? What’s
the difference between them? There are options available up to age
80, and many people find these more attractive than self-insuring or
self-funding. Sign up at the monitor’s desk by October 13.

effect for most people at age 65 is the key to being able to afford
health care costs that would otherwise quickly sap your retirement
savings.

But over the years, Medicare has gotten increasingly complicated,
and with the emergence of The Affordable Health Care Act,
Americans are struggling to understand exactly how to get their
health care covered. To help you get a handle on Medicare, Henry
LeTang, of United Health Care will be on hand to answer your
questions and correct misconceptions.
For example, what does the original Medicare cover? What are some
health care costs not covered by Medicare? Does Medicare cover
long-term health care, nursing home care and skilled nursing facility
care? Does Medicare cover eye exams and dental services?
By understanding how Medicare works, you’ll be in the best position

Mezzo Bistro & Wine – A
Great Italian Experience
Hello Folks! If you haven’t visited the Mezzo
Bistro & Wine, you are in for a real treat. This
is one of my very favorite restaurants in Las
Vegas. Inspired by the design and feel of a
Napa Valley Winery, Mezzo Bistro has been
recognized by www.TripAdvisor.com as a 2014
Winner of their Certificate of Excellence.
Conveniently located on 4275 North Rancho
Drive, far from the hustle and bustle of The
Strip, you will be delighted with the ambiance
of the restaurant, the diverse menu, featuring
classic and contemporary Italian dishes and
wine selections.
For our appetizer, we enjoyed the “Mezzo Sampler,” which offered yummy samplings
of tender fried calamari served with a marinara “secret sauce,” stuffed portabella
mushrooms and mouthwatering, fresh tomato brochette piled over grilled Italian
bread. And that was just the beginning!
A few minutes later, Kitchen Manger Dennis Hill came over to our table to tell us
about the specials and find out if we were enjoying our meal. Then we were greeted
by the Executive Chef Eder Hernandez. This led to an interesting conversation about
their previous experience in Las Vegas and how Mezzo’s prided itself on using
original Italian recipes from the various provinces of Italy.
Although we felt like we could not possibly eat another bite after our meal, our
waiter insisted we try one of their delicious desserts. We finally acquiesced to
ordering Crème Brule. We all had a sampling and agreed that it was worth the extra
calories.
The evening was fabulous from start to finish. I suggest you think of Mezzo Bistro &
Wine the next time you want to enjoy an authentic Italian meal in a romantic setting.
Just ask for Kelly Richards or Sean Elefante, and they’ll make sure your experience is
memorable. For reservations, call 702-944-8880.
Mezzo Bistro recently celebrated its 4th anniversary and has become a local’s
favorite under the tutelage of owners, Richards and Elefante, who are often found in
the restaurant greeting customers. The bistro is open Monday–Saturday 11 a.m. -10
p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, visit www.mezzobistro.com. I
hope you come to love Mezzo Bistro as much as I do!

According to a recent Urban Institute study as well
as several other sources, the number one cause
of financial ruin in your retirement years is a long
term care illness. Why? Well, because it is likely to
happen and the cost of care is so expensive. So,
one of the biggest decisions you will make in
your retirement years is how to protect your nest
egg against this risk and pay for this care. What is
the optimal decision factoring in taxes and liquidity
of assets?
New studies by the National Association of Health
Underwriters and Medicare have suggested that
more than 70% of all retirees who live to 65 years
of age will need some form of long term care in
retirement. That number is simply staggering,
and according to a recent study by Genworth,
the national average cost for a semi-private room
nursing home stay in the United States is $80,300.
Home care, which is what most people prefer, can
be costly too. When you couple the odds and cost,
you can really see why it is so important to have a
plan in place to pay for this care.
Unfortunately, Medicare and personal health
insurance policies do not cover the cost of long
term care. So, the bottom line is that you need
to find a way to pay for this probable risk without
ruining your retirement plan. Fortunately, and
contrary to popular belief, there are many ways and
options to pay for a long term care illness.
To learn of these ways and options so you can
make the proper decision, visit our website at
www.AskAdamGoodman.com, attend our monthly
lunch & learns held in the SCAL community
center, or to discuss your specific concerns

The Big Decision
Americans may be optimistic in general, but when
it comes to retirement security many people have
their doubts. When I sit down with someone for a
meeting for the first time, one of the most common
questions that I get asked is, “Are we on track for
our retirement?”, or, “Is my retirement plan secure?”
This is for both pre-retirees who are nearing
retirement and for retirees who want to make
sure their plan is going to work. So, what about
you? Are you on track and confident for a
successful retirement?

Vista Cabaret - Thursday, October 22, 7 p.m.
These two talented performers
have enjoyed success as
both a duo and solo artists.
Having spent the last 27 years
performing throughout Australia, Tony Lewis has created a name for
himself as the quintessential Jerry Lewis tribute artist. His one-man
show has sold out countless venues and has earned him the respect
as one of Australia’s best entertainers.
Since his first appearance at the Dean Martin Festival in 1998, Tom
Stevens has earned his title as “The best Dean Martin tribute artist.”
Dean Martin’s daughter, Deana, claims, ”I’ve never seen anybody
look and sound more like my daddy.” Having spent the last 11 years
in Las Vegas, Tom has amazed audiences with his uncanny tributes
to over 100 celebrities.

Fall is here and the Sun City Aliante Steppers are back after a brief
break, preparing for their upcoming performances. They finished up
the season in August with their annual appearance in the Ms. Senior
Nevada Pageant at the South Point Hotel. There they performed at
the talent showcase on Tuesday and Wednesday with a presentation
of the new 2015 contestants and the crowning of the new 2015
Queen. The winner this year was Ms. Joan Schaumburg from Sun
City Anthem.
The Steppers will perform at two upcoming events this month
to support the “non-profit” Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant and are
preparing new numbers for the upcoming holiday season.

SCAL Steppers… Looking for New Recruits
Hear Ye Hear Ye , Ladies and Gentlemen:
The Sun City Aliante Steppers are seeking new recruits for their
dance club. Check them out to see if you’d like to be involved with
this very active club. No experience is necessary. If you can hear the
beat of the music you are already ahead. Call Margo Young for more
information at 702-649-1176.
SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS
The Seniors with Warm Hearts would like to thank the community for
their overwhelming support during the recent “Back to School” drive.
They received enough supplies to send to S.A.F.E. House and to two
schools that needed the most help. Your donations have assisted in
making this a better school year for many students.
Once again, they will participate in the October 17 Arts and Crafts
Fair by holding raffles. We appreciate the vendors who provide us
with the items that we raffle off during the event. Look for our table
near the entrance. This fundraiser enables us to help S.A.F.E. House
during the “Holiday Drive.”
Their next meeting is October 15 in the Activity Room. For more
information, contact Dolores Abbott at 702-406-2222, Carol Hoyt at
