BACKSTAGE VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
We greatly appreciate parents who are willing to volunteer backstage! Your help is critical to the organization and
smooth operation of our performance. Please consider working backstage during 1 of our recital performances.
Thank you in advance for helping make our recitals great!
For the Saturday 12pm & 3pm performances we need 1-2 volunteers per class to help with that class backstage.
We are looking for helpful parents who can help us keep students organized backstage
while still having an upbeat friendly attitude. We ask that all volunteers commit to duties
listed and agree to follow recital procedures. (Please Note: No additional children may be brought
backstage, only those performing in the recital.)
VOLUNTEER “DUTIES”:

Arrive at Taylor Auditorium 30 minutes early for dress rehearsal & recital.






Stay with group backstage during the entire rehearsal and recital.
Help assist with costume changes, shoe changes, accessories, etc..
Accompany group from the dressing room to the backstage area before they perform.
Stay with group until all students have been picked-up by a parent at rehearsal & recital.
Help occupy/entertain students while they wait for their turn to perform.
Be encouraging and upbeat, but help keep the dressing room area calm and organized
(Please check the times for your rehearsal to confirm you can be there early)
Volunteers will get a Front Row View of their student’s performance! Once students are accompanied to wings of
the stage to meet their instructor you may enter the audience from the side stage door to watch their performance
in a special reserved row for volunteers and teachers! Volunteers will also receive a $25 credit towards their
student’s summer tuition per recital they help with. (This will be applied after the recital.)
Please make sure you are able to fulfill all of the above duties before volunteering.
If you are able to volunteer please return the bottom portion of this sheet to the studio office.

DRESS REHEARSAL PROCEDURES
Dress rehearsal is a practice for the recital. Participation in the dress rehearsal is mandatory for all performers.
Students get a chance to practice on stage and we get to practice all recital procedures. Dress rehearsal is a very
important part of having a successful recital night. Students need to wear their costumes, hair and make-up
exactly like they will during the recital. Parents are welcome to stay and watch the rehearsal. We ask that all
parents remain in the auditorium during the rehearsal unless they are volunteering backstage.
During the rehearsal for the Saturday Noon Recital (Friday 5:30pm) and the Saturday Afternoon Recital
(Thursday 6:00pm) we will begin the rehearsal by practicing the FINALE NUMBER first. All the students in
these shows will learn the finale number in their classes to do all together on stage at the end of the recital. We
will practice this together at the BEGINNING of the DRESS REHEARSAL so that dancers may leave after their
class practices, but on the day of the performance this routine will actually be the last dance during the show.
Classes will be dismissed from the check in/out area once they have finished rehearsing their dances.
Before you leave the rehearsal make sure your student has everything they brought backstage with them.
RECITAL ETIQUETTE 101
The studio recital is a formal theater performance. Certain etiquette is expected from audience members during formal
performances. Please read this information and share it with any guests you invite to the recital!
Audience members should arrive on time and be in their seats when the performance begins. You should remain seated during the entire “act” and use intermission only to leave the theater or move around. You should not move in and out of the theater while performers
are on stage. Audience members should plan to stay and watch the entire performance.
There should be no talking during performances. Cell phones should be turned off and put away. Please remain seated to take pictures
and/or video, no flash photography allowed. The studio hires professional videographers to capture the recital please do not interfere.
Please encourage all performers with applause at the conclusion of their performance. Please do not shout out students names, whistle,
or encourage students to wave at you. We want to show our encouragement to all performers, not cause a distraction to other performers or fellow audience members.
It is customary for performers to receive flowers after their performance. This is not required, but we want to inform new parents of this
tradition if it is your student’s first recital.
We appreciate all parents and audience members helping us have a great
RECITAL PROCEDURES
All recital policies and procedures are created to help the recital run smoothly.

COSTUME INSTRUCTIONS
Recital costumes will be sent home in April before recital pictures.
Unpack your student’s costume and have them try it on to assure correct fit. Keep in mind that dance
costumes are designed for stage and many times fit differently than street clothing.
Some “fluffing” and straightening maybe necessary to adjust the costume from shipping. Do not iron your
student’s costume.
Do not allow your student to “play” in their costume until after the recital!
 SHOES & TIGHTS:
Make sure your student has the correct color and style of shoes and tights before pictures.
Pink Ballet Shoes = Pink Tights
Tan Jazz Shoes = Tan Tights
 Ballet/Tap (Pre Ballet/Tap/Jazz) Combo classes will only need 1 pair of tights, pink for both dances.
 Tumbling/Acro: No tights or shoes


COSTUME NO-NOS!
1. NO SATIN HOUSE SLIPPERS!
All students wearing ballet shoes need real leather ballet slippers. Wal-Mart and Target sell satin house
slippers for little girls that are commonly mistaken for ballet shoes. These “play” slippers stick to the floor
and slip off easily. Students should not wear these for the recital (or class.)
2. NO UNDERWEAR!
Students wearing tights should not wear underwear with their costume. If this is your first experience
with performing on stage this may seem odd, but like with a swimming suit, underwear is not worn with
tights and a leotard. Underwear showing on stage takes away from the costume and performance.
3. NO ADDED ACCESSORIES!
Please do not add additional jewelry or accessories to your student’s costume. We want students to look
uniform on stage. Only accessories that come with the costume should be worn.
STAGE MAKE-UP APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Makeup may be applied at your discretion for children under age 6, however, under the bright lights, facial
features wash out and makeup helps the audience to see the dancer's faces more clearly. It looks like a lot of
make-up in regular light, but on stage it does not. Good stage makeup will look very exaggerated, dramatic and
bold. We suggest:
1) BASE: (foundation) is not necessary for most very young children, however, if you use
it yourself and are comfortable applying a light cover, you may. Just be careful
when putting a costume on, as it is easy to soil it with foundation, etc. Use
foundation only if you are comfortable with it.
FOR AGE 10+: Please apply a light toned foundation as a base for your makeup.
Apply only on full face down to but not including the neck area. Let dry
thoroughly before proceeding:
2) EYE SHADOW: Use light colored eye shadow only. Dark colors make eyes
disappear. Colors are not necessary, however, pale pastel colors in any shade will
do: For example, nude to white, very light green/blue/lilac. Go easy with browns,
however, for teens and adults if you know how to apply a brown accent line you
may at the crease of eye, however be careful for dark shades on lids or up to area
under brow are inappropriate. A light highlight shadow from eyelid to eyebrow is
desirable.
3) EYELINER: Please use a dark brown/black pencil liner along lower lid of eye just
below where the lashes grow on lower lid, just above lashes on upper lid. If the
child is too young to handle this application, you may omit it. For all children
age 6 and older, please be certain to have eyes lined.
4) EYEBROW PENCIL: Please use a medium brown pencil for eyebrows only if the
hair color is very light and looking directly at the face of the dancer the eyebrow is
not clearly defined. If eyebrows are dark enough naturally, no pencil is necessary.
5) MASCARA: Please apply thick layer of heavy black mascara to upper and lower lids,
however, this may not be tolerated by very young students and you may get by with
just liner. TEEN STUDENTS should apply false eyelashes for maximum effect on
stage. Simply buy thick black lashes with adhesive, trim to fit and follow
instructions. It is best to practice before the day of the show.
6) BLUSH: Apply rose or coral blush to hollow of check only - NOT over the cheek
bone itself: Have dancer suck in cheeks and apply blush to area of the check that
concaves. Enough blush should be applied to bring color to shadowed soft part of
the cheek leaving the area over the cheekbone light and not colored at all.
7) LIPSTICK: Bright red lipstick is the only real color that is appropriate on stage. If
the costume color is bright pink a very deep hot pink lipstick would be a better
choice. For all other costume colors, a bright red lipstick is best.
HAIR INSTRUCTIONS
How to Style Hair into a Bun
It is easiest to manage hair that is damp and has gel worked through it before trying to secure back into a bun.
Never try to put dry hair up in a bun – especially with children with fine hair. Work with dampened hair that has
a sticky gel worked through before combing back.
1) Slick Bangs off the face: This is very important onstage and will require that you use the damp hair/
wet gel method described above for short or long hair to get the bangs back. Bobby pins may be
necessary; however, if the hair is wet and gel applied, it will help to keep it sufficiently off the forehead.
ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE BANGS OFF THE FACE
2) Secure hair into a ponytail: On very damp hair thoroughly apply a thick gel to slick the hair and make it
workable. After applying gel and with hair still damp, brush back into a ponytail at the crown of the
head (back top of head) and secure with a strong hair elastic. Looking from the front the bun should
partially show over the top of the head.
.
3) Twist hair into a bun: Depending upon the length of the hair, twist in a circle around the elastic and secure
all loose ends with bobby pins until there are no loose or unsecured areas of the bun. (It takes quite a few
bobby pins to properly secure a bun.)
.
4) Use a hair net for a neat bun: Hair nets can also be used to secure loose hairs and help create a neat looking
bun. Use a fine hair net that matches closely to your student’s hair. Wrap the hair net around the bun and
twist, tucking the elastic under the bun. Continue wrapping and twisting securing all hairs into the bun.
.
5)
Finishing touches: Smooth back any fuzzy or loose hairs. Additional bobby pins may be needed around ears
and at the nape of the neck. Spray head and bun with hairspray to finish. If applicable, secure costume
headpiece or hat as instructed by the teacher on costume information sheet.
 What if my student’s hair is too short for a bun? All student’s must have there hair secured back with
no loose hair. Even the shortest hair can be secured back with gel and bobby pins. You may have to practice
to perfect this. No hair should be left loose.

Hip Hop & Tumbling Classes: For tumbling and hip hop students will wear their hair in a
“high ponytail.” Follow steps 1 & 2 only to create this style.
 Note for Competition Baton Twirling Students: Follow the above instructions, then secure curly hair piece
over bun. If your student is in twirling and dance or tumbling make sure the hair piece can be easily removed.
Curly hairpiece will only be worn for baton twirling routines.
 Note for Performing Company Dancers: Although students wore various hairstyles for competition, to
make quick changes more feasible students will wear their hair in a bun for all dances for the recital.
