President - Dr. Janet Cunningham
President - Dr. Janet Cunningham
Dr. Janet Cunningham began serving as the 19th president of Northwestern
Oklahoma State University on July 1, 2006, following her appointment by the
Board of Regents of the Regional University System of Oklahoma.
Cunningham becomes just the second alumni and first woman to become
president of the institution.
In appointing Cunningham to the University’s top post, the Board of Regents
cited her leadership abilities, experience and vision for Northwestern,
qualities that inspired confidence among the University’s many stakeholders.
Cunningham was named executive vice president in 2002 after serving
12 years as vice president for fiscal affairs. As executive vice president,
Cunningham served as the second highest ranking officer at Northwestern,
developing and administering the university’s fiscal operations, with additional
direct control over student services, intercollegiate athletics, auxiliary
services, physical plant, financial aid, information technology and economic
development.
She joined the faculty at Northwestern in 1979 and continued teaching
until 1985, when she became an instructor at the University of Oklahoma
while her husband attended law school there. She returned to teaching at
Northwestern in 1988.
A Message From the President
Dear Ranger Fans:
On behalf of myself, our coaches and our more than 400
student-athletes, I want to thank you for your continued support
of athletics at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Whether
you attend games as a fan or provide direct financial support to
our programs, you play an important role in the success of our
programs and in the academic and personal development of our
student-athletes.
Athletics has always played an important role at Northwestern. It
provides students with the opportunity to seek a college degree
and learn valuable life lessons, such as leadership, dedication
and perseverance. Athletics also provides a rallying point for
our student body, alumni and community. With that in mind, our
coaches and support personnel work diligently to prepare our
student-athletes for success both inside and outside of the realm
of competition.
Cunningham earned a doctorate in education from Oklahoma State
University and has both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from
Northwestern. She also has completed professional education at the Institute
of Educational Management at Harvard University and through the College
Business Management Institute at the University of Kentucky. In 2001, she
became a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma.
A leader in civic affairs, Cunningham serves on the executive committee
of the Alva Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Woods County
Economic Development Association. She also has served in numerous
volunteer capacities with organizations connected to the Alva Public Schools.
Cunningham and her husband, Rick, a local attorney, have four children:
sons Brett, Tanner and Drew, and a daughter Allison.
I hope you will continue to show your pride in the Red and Black
and support Northwestern and its athletic programs. You are an
important part of our University team and we are proud to have
your support.

Head Coach - Steve Barrows
Steve Barrows - Head Coach
the last six years, his squads received national
team academic and sportsmanship recognition
from the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America. He received the John Sheffield
Teacher of the Year Award for his outstanding
efforts in the classroom during the 2006-07
academic year.
Barrows completed his master’s of psychology
from Northwestern in 2003.
The 2004 squad placed second in the Region
VI Tournament and narrowly missed out on a
chance to play in the NAIA National Tournament.
He resides in Alva with his wife, Vanedda.
In 2006, Barrows officially retired after 25
years of distinguished service with the U.S.
Army and the Oklahoma and Kansas Army
National Guard units.
The inaugural season of 2001 did not turn out
exactly as Barrows would have liked. After
ending the season with a 4-14 record, he quickly
got the Rangers going in the right direction.
Steve Barrows enters his ninth season as the
head coach of the women’s soccer program
at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
Since the team’s inception in 2001, Barrows has
compiled a 69-73-7 record.
Barrows not only showed improvement in the
2002 season, but he proved what kind of coach
he is by turning in a 13-7 record. The Rangers
finished third in the SAC and extended their
season to the second round of the conference
playoffs, where they lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to
Oklahoma Christian University.
In his tenure, Barrows has captured a Sooner
Athletic Conference Championship (2004),
competed in five SAC playoffs, appeared in two In 2003, the Rangers finished with an impressive

On an individual level, he has produced an NAIA
Third Team All-American, four NAIA Honorable
Mention All-Americans, seven NAIA Academic
All-Americans, four ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-Americans, eight SAC First-Team
All-Conference selections and seven SAC
Second-Team All-Conference picks.
Last season, the Rangers posted a 2-14-1
overall record. During 2007, the squad was
7-10 along with a 4-5 SAC mark and made the
team’s fifth appearance in the SAC playoffs. The
Rangers fell 2-1 in the SAC quarterfinals to the
eventual champions, Rogers State University.
In 2006, Barrows’ team finished with a 4-121 overall mark. During the 2005 season, he
led the Rangers to a winning season with a
9-7-2 overall record and with a 3-3-1 Sooner
Athletic Conference mark. During the season,
the Rangers defeated #14 Auburn-Montgomery
and cracked the NAIA top 25 for the third
consecutive season.
Barrows brings experience to Northwestern
soccer as both a former semi-professional
player and coach.
He started his love of soccer at age 7 in St.
Louis where he grew up and trained under
former professional players from the United
States, Europe and South America.
Barrows started his semi-professional career
playing for F.C. Monterey in 1976 as their right
wing. He then moved on to play in South Korea
for the United Stars as the center forward from
1977-78.
His ties with Northwestern started in 1979
when he played the role of player/coach for the
Rangers’ club team.
After he graduated from Northwestern in 1984
with degrees in psychology and sociology,
he continued his tour of soccer playing. He
was a player and captain for two teams in
Albuquerque, New Mexico, before playing and
The Rangers’ most notable season was in 2004, coaching for the Albuquerque Gunners from
when the Northwestern women finished 16-3-2 1986-90 where he became the general manager
and took home the school’s first Sooner Athletic and president of the team.
Conference championship.
Before Barrows made it back to Alva, he stopped
at Kansas City from 1990-92 and played for the

Sooner Athletic Conference
What began as a
basketball conference
has become a dominant
grouping of some of the
best athletic programs in
the NAIA.
semifinals. OBU has been to the tournament for each of the last 13
years, which is the longest active stretch.
Additionally, Oklahoma Christian has been a long-time regular at
the NAIA Tournament and seven SAC schools were in the 32-team
tournament in 2004. The SAC has had at least four entrants in each
national tournament since 1997 and has had five or more entrants in
each of the last five seasons.
The Sooner Athletic Conference began in 1977-78 with Bethany
Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University), Oklahoma
Baptist University, Oklahoma Christian University, Phillips University
and the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. Only one of those
charter members is no longer with the conference, which has since
added to its strength.
But basketball is just the tip of the iceberg of success in the SAC.
In track, Oklahoma Baptist won the 2005 and 2007 women’s indoor
national title and both OBU and Lubbock Christian have won national
men’s track championships in the 1990s, with the Bison adding another
outdoor men’s title in 2007. Wayland Baptist captured both the women’s
indoor and outdoor national titles in 2008 and 2009.
John Brown University has twice been an expansion team in the
conference, joining the league in 1980 and then re-joining the SAC in
1995 after a 12-year absence.
Lubbock Christian won every men’s cross country national title from
1990-97.
Oklahoma City University dropped out of the ranks of NCAA Division
I in 1985 and took up residence in the SAC, beginning in the 1985-86
season.
In baseball, Lubbock Christian won the national title in 1983 2009 and
Oklahoma City has reached the finals in every season from 2002 until
winning the title in 2005, among their league-best nine appearances.
OBU also has appeared twice. Oklahoma Christian, Wayland Baptist,
Southern Nazarene and John Brown also have made appearances in
the national tournament.
Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University left
their independent status behind and were admitted as the first Texas
members of the SAC in 1994, replacing USAO, which opted to leave
the league that year.
St. Gregory’s University, applied for membership and was granted
associate member status and competed for the conference crown for
the first time in 1998-99.
In men’s golf, Oklahoma City won the national championship in 2001,
2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and was the runner-up in 1991.
Oklahoma Christian was runner-up in 2001 and won it all in 2009, when
four SAC teams were in the final top 12. Wayland Baptist was runner-up
in 2007.
Charter member Phillips University was closed in the summer of
1998 due to financial instability.
Southern Nazarene won the women’s golf titles in 1999 and 2002, with
OCU finishing as runner-up in 2001, 2003 and 2004 before claiming the
2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 national crowns.
USAO, which had dropped out and joined the Red River Athletic
Conference, applied for and was granted membership in the SAC
during the 1999-2000 school year.
Over a span from 1993-2002, Oklahoma City was in the national softball
championship game 10 times, winning it all in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997,
2000, 2001, 2002 and again in 2007. They also were runner-up in 1986.
OCU has reached the national tournament a national-record 19 times.
Lubbock Christian threw its hat in the ring in 2008 and came away
with a national title. St. Gregory’s was the national runner-up in 2009.
Oklahoma Baptist has made it to three tournaments, while Oklahoma
Christian has made it twice. The SAC carries an impressive 129-52
record at the national tournament.
Northwestern Oklahoma State University was added to the
conference as a full member in the 2001-02 academic year.
Mid-America Christian University and Rogers State joined the league
and became full members in 2007-08.
The Sooner Athletic Conference has had a proud heritage in the
NAIA. In men’s basketball, a SAC team has played for the national
championship 13 times and has been in the finals in 13 of the last 17
seasons. USAO won the national crown in 2002, beating Oklahoma
Baptist in an all-SAC title tilt, John Brown won the 2005 crown and
Oklahoma City won it all in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
Oklahoma Christian won the men’s tennis national title in 2003 and
Oklahoma City claimed the national championship in a four-year run
from 1998-2001. The OCU men were also runners up in 1994 and 1995.
In women’s basketball, SAC member Southern Nazarene won four
NAIA titles from 1994-97, with OCU going on a four-year run of its
own, winning championships from 1999-2002. SNU then upset OCU
in the 2003 and 2004 title games. Lubbock Christian was the talk of
the 2006 tournament, advancing to the championship game. In 2009,
both Oklahoma Baptist and Oklahoma City reached the national
In women’s tennis, Oklahoma City was a national runner-up in 1999.
Each year the national championships bear out what the member
institutions believe: the Sooner Athletic Conference is simply the best
small college conference in America.

Dear Ranger Alumni and Fans,
Vision for Victory Donor List (as of 8/27/09)
In September 2007, President Janet Cunningham announced
the school’s intentions to improve the football and baseball
venues to meet the needs of a modern-day collegiate athletic
program. Northwestern has termed this athletic renaissance
the Vision for Victory Campaign. Projects included as part
of this campaign include a new football locker room, which
will include space for athletic training and strength training
facilities, a new press box and public use facility, permanent
seating and new dugouts at the baseball field, and a new
indoor practice facility for our baseball and softball teams.
To complete all these projects, Northwestern must raise
approximately $4.5 million. The challenge lies in the fact we
must rely on private donations to fund this project.
We would ask that you consider a commitment to the Vision
for Victory Fund. We are counting on your gift to continue to
provide our current and future student-athletes with the very
best Northwestern has to offer.
Sincerely,
Bob Battisti, Director of Athletics

Champions of Character
Respect
integrity
Responsibility
Servant Leadership
Sportsmanship
Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the
overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the
character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an
environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit
of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and
sportsmanship. The NAIA Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of
character values in sport, and provide student-athletes, coaches and parents the training to help them
know the right thing, do the right thing and value the right thing inside and outside the sports setting.

One athlete of character will
improve a team. One team of
character will improve a school.
One school of character can
