Sherman, Administrative Director Vision and Mission Our VISION is to celebrate jazz as a uniquely American art form. Our MISSION is to enrich the cultural and intellectual fabric of the communities we serve through jazz.. We NOURISH our community by actively leading in our region's cultural community, promoting Cleveland, reflecting Cleveland's diversity, and serving as a musical beacon. We PERFORM to play the best jazz you've ever heard and the best jazz you've never heard. We EDUCATE our community by celebrating cultural unification through jazz and by inspiring new generations of jazz listeners, players, teachers, and jazz lovers. We SUSTAIN our existence in the community by optimizing earned revenue, providing appropriate market compensation, and securing funding to ensure our survival in perpetuity. Dear CJO Fan, Thanks for another great year of Cleveland jazz! As we look back at the 2011/2012 concert season, we remain grateful for your continued support. Your ticket purchases, individual gifts, concert sponsorships and institutional support have allowed us to expand our season programming, helping us reach new audiences and bringing the very best jazz to the Cleveland community. You’ve invested your time and your financial resources in the CJO and we’ve prepared this Annual Report to provide you with an accounting of how we did over the past fiscal year: who we served, what we offered, where we received our operating revenue and how we spent our funds. You’ll find all of this information here. Artistic highlights of our 2011/2012 season included our first-ever NEA Jazz Master with the incomparable Jimmy Heath at the Ohio Theatre, two sold-out concerts at the Hanna Theatre, and a brand-new Jingle Bell Jazz family matinee of our popular holiday concert. We developed wonderful new collaborations and partnerships with Broadway School of the Arts and Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland (MOCA) which helped us serve new and different audiences. Our second annual benefit event at Nighttown netted nearly twice as much as our first effort. We also upgraded our website and grew our Facebook presence from under 1,000 fans to over 3,000. Looking ahead to our 2012/2013 season we’re excited to continue our popular pre-show talks, the family concert and our existing collaborations. We’re also thrilled to add one more CJO Plugged In concert plus new partnerships with other community-based Cleveland music organizations. We remain focused on serving as a responsible steward of your gifts and grants and collaborating, creating and connecting with other Cleveland non-profit organizations to help sustain ourselves and support our community. We hope this Annual Report gives you some perspective on what we’ve accomplished during the past year. We’re excited to share this information about where we’ve been—and we’re even more excited about where CJO is headed. Yours in Cleveland Jazz, Sean Jones Artistic Director Paul Ferguson Associate Artistic Director Daniel R. Leibundgut President FISCAL 2012 HIGHLIGHTS In 2011/2012 CJO EXPANDED. CJO added two more concerts to its Annual Concert Series, including a CJO Plugged In electric band concert and a new Jingle Bell Jazz Family Matinee. In 2011/2012 we served over 2,700 listeners at 8 CJOproduced concerts. Over the past five years CJO has doubled the number of its selfproduced concerts and quadrupled its total audience. EDUCATED. CJO educated audiences and the community at large through free pre-show talks, a family holiday concert, a free outreach concert with Broadway School of the Arts, and a master class with NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath. COLLABORATED. New collaborations with Broadway School of the Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA), Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Tri-C helped CJO widen its reach in the community. ENGAGED. A newly upgraded website makes it easier for regular patrons and new fans to find info about CJO. Through Facebook, CJO regularly engages more than 3,000 friends with contests, programming questions and insider info about what’s new with CJO. REACHED. CJO’s recordings are played regularly on satellite radio and are purchased online by jazz fans throughout the U.S., Japan, Australia and Europe! Each year CJO serves over 10,000 listeners of all ages, income levels and backgrounds in Cleveland, Northeast Ohio and the world . Annual Concert Series CJO served over 2,600 listeners at seven ticketed concerts: Nov. 5, 2011, Hanna Theatre, Cleveland Voices, showcasing Cleveland guest vocalists Ki Allen, Evelyn Wright and John Morton in concert with CJO. Dec. 10, 2011, Hanna Theatre, Not So Silent Night, featuring full-band and small-ensemble jazz treatments of classic holiday tunes. Dec. 11, 2011, Hanna Theatre, Jingle Bell Jazz FAMILY MATINEE, a new concert for families with young children featuring a hugely successful pre-show instrument “petting zoo” and a 60-minute interactive concert. Feb. 4, 2012, Hanna Theatre, Celebration of the Big Band, showcasing the evolution of the big band from early swing to its current sounds. March 9, 2012, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), CJO Plugged In, featuring Sean Jones and the members of Hubb’s Groove, this concert continued CJO’s successful small-ensemble electric jazz concept and initiated a successful new collaborative relationship with MOCA. Other highlights included a VIP cocktail reception and private gallery tours. April 1, 2012, Fairmount Temple Auditorium, Swingin’ at the Temple, the CJO’s annual tribute to Jewish composers led by Associate Artistic Director Paul Ferguson with vocalist Helen Welch. May 12, 2012, Ohio Theatre, NEA Jazz Master Concert, featuring National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Jimmy Heath in a master class, pre-show discussion and guest performance with the CJO. Contract Performances Each year CJO is hired by outside organizations and presenters. This represents a valuable stream of earned revenue to the organization—and it helps increase CJO’s visibility within and outside the community. In Fiscal 2012 CJO performed contract engagements at: Hudson Summer Music Festival The Chautauqua Institution (New York) City of Bedford Festival of the Pooka EDUCATION AND OUTREACH Free Outreach Concert with Broadway School of the Arts CJO collaborated with Broadway School of the Arts to present a free outreach concert of the CJO Quartet, led by Sean Jones, to over 100 students, family members and Broadway community members. Presented at Bohemian Hall in November, 2011, this concert provided a one-hour “Intro to Jazz” which featured graduates of Broadway School of the Arts in performance with the CJO. A lively Q&A session with the CJO musicians followed (plus birthday cake in honor of Broadway School of the Art’s 30th anniversary!) Master Class with Jimmy Heath CJO worked with Tri-C to present and publicize a free master class with NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath at the Tri-C Metro Campus. Students from Tri-C and Oberlin performed for Mr. Heath and received his personal critique. Then Mr. Heath entertained a capacity audience of 70 with colorful stories of his life among other jazz legends. Join us for our 2012-2013 CJO Concert Season Pre-Show Talks CJO Community Leadership Council Fred Weisman—Honorary Chairman Jules & Fran Belkin Irving & Gloria Fine Vic & Joan Gelb Anna Greenfield Nobby Lewandowski Albert & Audrey Ratner Dennis & Marcy Schwartz Dominic A. Visconsi, Sr. Free pre-show talks before every PlayhouseSquare concert featured CJO musicians, such as Paul Ferguson, Dave Morgan and Howie Smith, plus special guest Jimmy Heath, in conversation with local jazz experts to educate and inform audiences about the evening’s program. Free Tickets to Big Brothers/Big Sisters & Boys/Girls Clubs CJO provided over 100 free tickets to members of Cleveland Big Brothers/Big Sisters so that “bigs” could bring their “littles” to CJO’s Hanna Theatre concerts. CJO also provided Boys Clubs/Girls Clubs of Cleveland with 100 free tickets to the family holiday concert. Cleveland Jazz Orchestra is generously funded by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
