The season of Lent is a good time to focus on helping others. Thank you for your generosity in responding to the call for items and donations to help the people of Fiji after the recent devastating cyclone. What a great response it has been and again it reflects the community spirit of Good Shepherd. Another invitation to help those less fortunate than ourselves is presented in this newsletter with the Shine Orange Day appeal on Friday 11 March, a need closer to home but also very worthwhile. Also included later in this newsletter are some important dates for your calendar. As a Catholic school, we value opportunities to celebrate Eucharist with our whole community and the dates for these special Masses have now been confirmed with Father Phil. Information about the Family/Whanau books and website will also provide you with details about how you can support your children in their learning about their faith. Finally, on 4th and 5th May we will be welcoming a review team from the Catholic Diocese of Auckland into Good Shepherd. This external review occurs every four years and is an opportunity for the school to reflect and get feedback on how we maintain and strengthen our Catholic special character. God bless Jane Hahn Good Shepherd Awards This week we congratulate Miguel Biado from Rm 4 and Erylle San Gabriel from Rm 6 for winning the Good Shepherd Awards. Miguel and Erylle are great role models for our values of care, respect and honesty. Staffing Update We welcome Mrs Clare Fala to the staff of Good Shepherd. Clare will be working mainly in Rooms 1 and 4 on a regular basis for the remainder of this year. Good Shepherd Hot House Challenge – Saturday 19 March Please put this date in your calendar for the 8th Annual Hot House Challenge event. This fun run around the school is brought to you by the Holey Fathers, the social club for the dads of Good Shepherd School community. It's a cross between a fun run, an obstacle course and a water fight! This year the fathers have added two new events on the day, the first being an inter-house ‘tug-o-war’ and, secondly, the houses will compete for the best ‘house cheer’. It really is a great day for children and adults so make sure you are here at Good Shepherd that afternoon! Look out for more information in the next few weeks. Attendance Dues Just a reminder that if you are paying in term instalments that the payment for Term 1 2016 is due by week 6 (commencing Monday 7th March). Eden/Albert Swimming Sports Congratulations to all our swimmers who represented Good Shepherd at the inter-school swimming sports this week. Reaching this level of competition is a great achievement for everyone in the team. Good Shepherd came a very creditable 6th place overall, out of the 10 schools competing. It’s time Good Shepherd School goes Orange for… Shine’s Orange Friday March 11th 2016 This year Good Shepherd School is getting behind Shine Day to raise awareness of the sickening statistics of domestic abuse in New Zealand. On Friday the 11th March we encourage all students and family members to wear orange, anything orange, an orange ribbon, an orange t-shirt, or even an orange wig. Make your stand against domestic abuse in our community with the colour orange. We also would like to encourage families to make an optional donation for the organisation. The donations will be collected in classrooms in the morning and given to the Shine Organisation to help the charity make a difference. Shine directly helps thousands of adult and child victims of domestic abuse to be safer. Shine motivates hundreds of family members that hurt their families to change their behaviour. They help thousands more by supporting and training other professionals to effectively intervene and support victims of domestic abuse. Shine is a non-profit organisation focusing on domestic abuse in New Zealand. Each family receives a Family Whanau Book when they first arrive at Good Shepherd School. It is also available on the Faith Alive site, http://www.faithalive.org.nz/families/ At the beginning of each strand it is important that we share the Family-Whanau Summary with our whanau, so teachers will either send a copy home for the fridge or even send a note to check the website.
