Carrier's Donation to St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital
June General
Membership Meeting
Carrier raises $1,681 to help fight childhood cancer through
second annual Give Thanks. Give Hope.™ Campaign
Local Air Conditioning Company,
Carrier, raised $1,681 for the children of St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital® during March and April
through the second annual Give
thanks. Give hope. campaign. Carrier
was one of dozens of businesses
across the country that participated in
the campaign benefiting St. Jude,
which is one of the world’s premier
centers for the research and treatment
of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases
During the six week campaign,
patrons could purchase a $1 pinup
or add on a donation at the register.
One hundred percent of proceeds
will help give hope to kids battling
deadly diseases at St. Jude.
Over nearly 50 years, the
research conducted at St. Jude has
helped push the survival rates for
childhood cancers from 20 percent
to 80 percent today. St. Jude has
achieved a survival rate of 94 percent for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of
childhood cancer. Today, St. Jude
continues to conduct the break-
May 2010
through research that is changing
the way some of the deadliest childhood diseases are treated.
“We truly appreciate all of the
businesses and customers who supported our lifesaving mission through
the Give thanks. Give hope. campaign,” said Richard C. Shadyac
Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising
organization of St. Jude. “Each
pinup bought during this campaign
will ensure that St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital continues to
unlock the mysteries of childhood
cancer and other deadly diseases.
This generosity inspires hope in the
patients and families who come
through our doors every day.”
About St. Jude
St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with
cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only
pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer
Center by the National Cancer

Africa’s call stirs chamber’s
Phelan into mission action
BY ASHLEY M. WISLOCK
The Collierville Herald
Though Kelly Phelan, the 24year-old office manager at the
Collierville Chamber of Commerce,
doesn’t know exactly where she’s
going to end up five or 10 years from
now, she knows where she’s meant
to be for the next year: on a mission
trip to Africa.
“I’ve always had a heart for
Africa, and for this next year, I
know this is what I’m supposed to
do,” she said.
Phelan is undertaking a yearlong internship through Go Global
Missions and the Life Church in
Memphis to “plant” a new branch of
the church in South Africa’s third
largest city, Durban, located along
the country’s southeastern coastline. Phelan will be working to
establish a local branch of the
Cordova-based church.
“We’re going to be building a local
church in the area,” she said. “They
have a Bible study group right now
and they’ve recently leased a building. …We’re hoping to actually
launch services in August.”
Phelan, who began working at
the chamber in 2007, and another
intern will be joining a Life Church
couple already working in South
Africa. The pair begins their twoday journey to Africa on May 25.
Phelan said providing others with
a place to worship is something that
excites her.
“I have such a love for the church
and my heart is to work with everyone around me and really show
Christ through the local church,”
Phelan said. “I want to be able to
offer a home for others and a place
for them to know God.”
In addition to establishing the
Life Church in Durban, Phelan and
her comrades will be reaching out to the community,
especially during occasions
that bring crowds of people
together, like the upcoming
soccer World Cup.
“One of the stadiums for
the World Cup is in Durban,
so we’ll definitely be working
with the times there,” she
said of the opportunity to
reach more people.
In addition to helping
bring her church to the people of
Durban, Phelan, who is originally
from New Hampshire and moved to
Tennessee for college, said she is
excited to experience the sights and
sounds of a new place.
“I’m excited to learn about South
Africa and see a new country and
maybe learn a little bit of a new language,” she said. “I’m just looking
forward to having fun while there.”
The only thing that makes her
nervous is the differences in driving.
“Driving on the left side of the
road makes me a little nervous,” she
said. “That’s going to introduce a
whole new learning curve.”
However, while Phelan said that
the decision to work abroad was
easy, raising the money to undertake the mission hasn’t been as simple. The internship is unpaid, and
with living expenses, she estimates
she will need $18,000 for the trip.
“I’ve raised about half of that so
far,” she said. “I’m looking for someone to partner with me on this journey.”
Donations for her trip can be
made through her website, kellyphelan.com, or by contacting her
at [email protected].

Global Missions. Donations can be
made using cash or check, made out
to Go Global Missions with Kelly
Phelan on the memo line, or credit
card and can be made in a lump
sum or in monthly installments.
Phelan will also use her website
to keep everyone in the States
updated with pictures, stories and
information.
While Phelan said she’s planning
to return to Memphis when her
year abroad is up, she doesn’t quite
know where life will take her after
that.
“I have all intentions of coming
back to Memphis, but I don’t know
if I’ll get a job here or just see where
things take me,” she said.
However, Phelan said she knows
what kind of work she wants to do
in the future.
“I want to work in missions,
whether that is here or abroad, in a
full-time aspect,” she said. “I really
want to have an impact on our city,
our nation and our world and I see
it happening through a nonprofit
group, whether that’s with an
orphanage or a home for women,
something like that.”

Pres. Obama Authorizes Major Disaster
Declaration for 21 Tennessee Counties
The federal government authorized
major disaster declarations for 21
Tennessee counties this week. This
action makes federal funding available
to individuals in Carroll, Crockett,
Cheatham, Davidson, Decatur, Dyer,
Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood,
Henderson, Hickman, Houston,
McNairy, Madison, Montgomery,
Obion, Perry, Shelby, Tipton and
Williamson Counties.
Governor Phil Bredesen asked
President Obama Monday, May 3, to
declare 52 counties federal disaster
areas following the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that struck the
state beginning Friday, April 30.
Declarations for additional counties
requested by the Governor are expected in the coming days.
Residents and business owners
who sustained losses in the designated
counties can begin applying for assistance immediately by registering online
at www.fema.gov or by calling:
1-800-621-FEMA (3362)
Tennessee suffered 21 confirmed
fatalities as a result of the extreme
weather and flooding that struck the
state April 30-May 2. Numerous evacuations and water rescues were performed as flood waters rose. Many
residents lost all of their possessions as
homes were destroyed or sustained
major damages.
FEMA has been working to help
Tennessee since before the weekend’s
storms ended, sending a liaison officer
to the state on Sunday and opening its
regional coordination center in Atlanta
to provide support to ongoing operations in Tennessee. FEMA Administrator
Craig Fugate, who also visited the
state on Monday, made his second trip
to Tennessee on Thursday, May 6,
since the flooding began. He will be
joined by Red Cross Senior Vice
President for Disaster Services Joe
Becker. Governor Bredesen has also
toured multiple areas of the state
this week with federal, state and
local officials.
The President’s action makes federal funding available to affected individuals in the counties authorized to
date, including both individual and
public assistance.
Individual assistance can include
grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious
disaster-related expenses. Public assistance is also available to state and eligible local governments and certain
private nonprofit organizations on a
cost-sharing basis for debris removal
and emergency protective measures
only at this time. In addition, federal
funding is available on a cost-sharing
basis for hazard mitigation measures
statewide.

Urgent needs have been brought to
our attention for some of the flood victims in
Millington! Will you please help?
They are desperately in need of 1X, 2X, 3X
and above clothing for both males and females.
If you can help, please drop the items off asap at any of
the Patriot Bank locations or First Baptist in Millington!
There still is a need for regular sized clothing and shoes for babies,
teens and adults, baby items, toiletries, cleaning supplies, new
socks
and underwear, towels, linens, furniture, etc.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The New Healthcare Law
3 Things Small Business Owners
Can Start Planning For Today
1. TALK TO YOU ACCOUNTANT
The new healthcare law affects businesses differently depending on a variety of factors including how
your business is organized, how many people you
employ, how many hours your employees work,
how much you pay your employees, and whether or
not you already offer insurance. This information
will be critical to understanding a range of taxrelated provisions - from the employer mandate to
the small business health insurance tax credit.
2. COUNT YOUR VENDORS
Beginning in 2012 you will need to start reporting
all business-to-business transactions of $600 or
more annually. This will require small business owners to obtain the tax ID number for all vendors that
they will be responsible for issuing a Form 1099.
3. CALL YOU INSURANCE AGENT
OR BROKER
If you are currently offering insurance, you should
speak to your insurance agent or broker about
potential changes to expect at your 2011 plan
renewal. For instance, if you have an HSA, MSA or
FSA, beginning in 2011 you and your employees
will be prohibited from using these funds for nonprescription over-the-counter drug purchases except for insulin. You may need to investigate
alternatives or educate your employees about this
change.

New Healthcare Law” Resource Center at

YOGA IS COMING TO PITTMAN!
When some people think of yoga, they imagine having to stretch like a gymnast. That makes them worry
that they're too old, unfit, or "tight" to do yoga. The truth is you're never too old to improve flexibility.
The series of yoga poses called asanas work by safely stretching your muscles. This releases the lactic
acid that builds up with muscle use and causes stiffness, tension, pain, and fatigue. In addition, yoga
increases the range of motion in joints. It may also increase lubrication in the joints. The outcome is a
sense of ease and fluidity throughout your body. Yoga movements are gentle and balanced. They work
in harmony with your body, lengthening and strengthening recovering muscles, tendons and ligaments.
We can help you recover from hamstring injuries, knee injuries, ankle and foot injuries and more.
In addition to helping people recover from injury, it can also help people lose weight. Regular yoga
practice has other benefits. It makes people feel better about their bodies as they become stronger and
more flexible. It tones muscles, reduces stress and improves people's mental and physical well-being.
The list of other benefits is well beyond the scope of this article. You'll just have to drop by Pittman
Physical Therapy's yoga classes to experience them yourself.
Lisa Warmuth will be heading up the Yoga program at Pittman. As a former patient, she is the perfect fit
for us as she understands injury and a good healthy balance. Lisa recently completed a 200-hour RYT
training program through Jason Hulshof of the Jonny Kest Center for Yoga.
Lisa teaches a Vinyasa style class blending physical alignment and core strength in a fluid rhythm.
Experience the rehabilitative benefits of yoga. The first class is free, so drop in and
check us out. You'll be glad you did. Email [email protected] or call us at 901-850-5246 for
more information. Class schedule and more information can be found on our website at
