Orland’s proud history is part of the reason
its future is bright. Folks in this city are a vibrant collection of pioneer families who helped
make its history and enterprising newcomers
who find the rural small town atmosphere a
great place to live and raise a family and prosper.
Everything from Agriculture to the Arts is
woven into the city’s fabric. Its people are as diverse as the colors and textures in a handmade
quilt. Its opportunities are as rich as the farmland and ranchland that surrounds the city. Its
possibilities are as bright as the morning sun
that shines on the water of beautiful Black
Butte Lake.
Browse through the following pages to find
out why a visit to Orland is a great way to
spend some quality time in a great Northern
California City.

COUNTY OF GLENN

Bruce T. Roundy, Mayor, City of Orland
WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to the City of Orland. In 2009, Orland is celebrating its Centennial year with pride and fanfare. We
welcome you to share in the celebration of our heritage
and “Century of Community.”
In the early 20th century, Orland evolved into a thriving
agrarian community when the Federal Irrigation Project
brought the promise of cheap land with plenty of water. Orland offered the promise of a new beginning and
became a melting pot of new settlers. These forefathers
built the town on the premise of hard work and volunteerism, which still lives today in the friendly, civicminded citizens who strive to maintain our small town
values and character.
Orland takes pride in its many parks, museum, schools,
library, art gallery and recreation center. Be sure to stop
in to the many restaurants, businesses, antique shops,
old fashioned soda shop, and bakeries. The Orland
Chamber of Commerce has information concerning local
events and activities.
Come visit the charm of small town America … and
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ORLAND!

ORLAND — A Great Place to Live
WANTED:
Clean air, wide open
spaces, fertile ground, friendly
neighbors, and safe, charming community suitable for raising a family.
REASONABLE!
In Orland, YOU’VE FOUND IT!
Stop by and take a look around Orland. Here you will
find a bustling community of small businesses and
wide, tree-lined boulevards. Orland’s “small town” atmosphere and rural lifestyle prove the perfect combination, whether you’re looking for your first home to raise
a family, or seeking a peaceful retirement retreat.
If you are seeking a new home, you will find a wide variety of options in Orland. Small, bungalow-style homes
line wide, city streets, while expansive, ranch and multistory homes can be found on acreage in the outlying
community. A number of planned communities offer
builder-ready lots and custom-built homes, or you can
tour the countryside and find “ranchettes” that fit within
a working couple’s budget.
Gazebo in Library Park
Recent efforts to preserve and restore the downtown
business district are helping Orland move forward, while
retaining ties with its past. Investors and entrepreneurs
alike recognize the value of historic preservation, and
recent years have seen an exciting transformation of
many old, tired structures into new, beautiful businesses. Salvagno’s Event Designers was among the first,
transforming an old gas station on Highway 99 into a
charming florist and boutique, followed by Farwood Bar
and Grill (4th Street), and most recently, the Carpets by
Ray (4th and Walker Streets).
So take a look at Orland and “make yourself at home!”
ORLAND: HISTORY IN THE MAKING
American pioneers were drawn to the hills of the
Colusa Plains in the early 1800’s. The projected
crossing of the Newville-Monroeville Road by the
northward-bound Southern Pacific railroad gave
rise to the village that became Orland in
1875. The long summers and fertile farmland
lured many speculative entrepreneurs to settle and
carve out homesteads on the banks of Hambright
and Stony Creeks, however the intermittent
droughts and occasional floods wreaked havoc in
the fledgling community
In February 1906 the early pioneers to Orland
formed the Orland Unit Water Users’ Association. By that July, a survey party was busy at
work in the western foothills on Little Stony and
Big Stony Creeks. Four months later, the East
Park Dam site 60 miles southwest of Orland had
been selected for the first federally funded irrigation project in the West. By the late 1910s, the
Bureau of Reclamation’s Orland venture was
known as “the project of no regrets.” Boom times
were just around the corner.
Orland Irrigation Project
In the exhilarating years of growth following the
completion of East Park, wooden buildings in the
business section of town were replaced with reinforced concrete structures, over 100 new homes
were built and the population of Orland increased
from 600 in 1910 to 2,000 in 1912.
Many of Orland’s historical buildings dating back
to its incorporation in 1909 are still standing today. We invite you wander through our unique
community where our proud history is a vital part
of our bright future.
EARLY PIONEERS
Excerpts from the Book “The Land of Orland” by Gene H. Russell
Captain Granville Swift was born in Kentucky on May 1, 1821. He was an accomplished outdoorsman when he started west in
1841. Swift worked for John Sutter as a
hunter and supplied meat, furs, and hides
for his Nueva Helvetia colony. By the mid1840’s, Swift and his cousin Franklin Sears
had selected a huge tract of land extending
over most of the western valley floor from
Stony Creek south to Cache Creek to settle
and ranch.
The area’s first home, the Swift Adobe, was
built about 1847 by Granville Swift and located north of town under majestic valley oak
trees along the south bank of Hambright
Creek. Anne and “Indian Jim” Brown were
two of the best known and most respected
Native Americans in Northern California. They also were among the last surviving
members of their respective tribes. Anne was
born and raised on the banks of Stony Creek,
a member of the Central Wintun (Nomlaki or
Grindstone) tribe, and was one of the helpers
or
housekeepers
of
Granville
Swift’s
adobe. Anne and Jim, a member of the Concow tribe that lived along Butte Creek, lived
Captain Granville Swift
seven miles west of Orland, and were happily
married for nearly half a century. Jim was a peacemaker between the whites and the native
people. He died April 15, 1922, and Anne passed away on October 28, 1927.
Granville Swift would later leave the area a rich man. He built a three-story mansion outside of
Sonoma, and married Jane Eliza Tate. Together they had three children.
GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
A dynamic Arts Commission and a state of the art gallery in a small rural town? Absolutely! Led by renowned fine artist George Turnbull, a highly motivated Arts Commission has provided some beautiful artistic additions to this city.
Its Art Gallery is a beacon for artists, local and statewide. A place to display their work, offer quality art
classes and provide opportunities to view professional work, the Orland Art Gallery is well lit with ample
space. Shows are held monthly and there is plenty of parking in its mall location. Shows are free and
open to the public.
Directly across the street from Library Park in downtown
Orland is the quaint Alta Schmidt Historical Museum. This
charming old structure is filled with fascinating memorabilia
of Orland’s rich history. It is also free and open to the public. Maintained by the all volunteer Orland Historical Society, the museum is another gem in Orland’s crown.
A visit to Orland must include a tour of the Newville-Pacific
Railroad Museum, located in the Glenn County Fairgrounds. The railroad’s history is a vital part of the history
of Orland and this site is full of the history of both. It also
provides train rides for young and old to enjoy.

There’s more! Drive down Orland’s residential sections’
lovely wide streets. See the small Old California Style
bungalows nicely mingled with stately old mansions, and
know that this, too, is part of the art and charm of the
city. Drive out a bit, into the surrounding farms and
ranches and discover places like the George Turnbull
Fine Art Gallery on a small ranch fifteen minutes from
town. Find other small galleries, like painter Patty Bambauer’s, located on the banks of the Sacramento
River. Drive in a different direction and see the stunning
natural splendor of the Black Butte landscape.
Natural beauty? Art in a small rural city? Museums and
galleries to visit? Absolutely! It’s all part of Orland’s
bright and beautiful future!

Orland Walking Tour
Begin your walking tour of Orland at the corner of 5th and Walker Streets. This was the original business center of town in 1909.
Walk east on Walker Street to 4th and turn right. Follow 4th Street three blocks to its end at Yolo Street. Double back one block to
Mill Street and turn left. Walk one block and turn right on 5th Street returning to your starting point at Walker Street.
BANK OF ORLAND: Bank of Orland building was constructed in 1887 at a cost of $7,095 and the upstairs was used as a meeting
place by numerous community organizations. The bank was absorbed by Bank of America in the late 1920s. The building was remodel in 1943 and served as Orland’s City Hall until March 1986.
SCEARCE & FRANKE BUILDING: Located on the northwest corner of 5th and Walker Streets, this brick building was a general
merchandise business, circa 1909—the start of boom years in Orland.
T.J. HICKS BUILDING: Construction to replace a one-story hardware store on this corner began in 1909. In 1910, Proctor Knott
Hicks purchased the T.J. Hicks Company from his father and was joined by William Chaney as a partner. The building was then
known as the Hicks & Chaney Building. It was purchased by the Booth Corporation and was commonly known as the Booth Hotel.
Restored in 2008-2009 by the owners of Floors By Ray.
BARCELOUX-IGLICK BUILDING: Remove the Mansard roof and you will have another of Orland’s buildings constructed in 1909.
Located at the northwest corner of 4th and Walker, the ground floor was originally a drug store and post office with medical offices
on the second floor. The current address is 402 Walker Street.
HOTEL ORLAND: This brick building at the southwest corner of 4th and Walker Streets, was built in 1902. It originally had a wrap
-around porch and contained a dining room, kitchen, large office, barbershop, and 27 sleeping rooms. Later it was known as the
Bullock Building at 401 Walker Street. A modernization movement in the mid-1920s lead to the removal of the porch and took down
the copula.
JOHN MEHL BUILDING: John Mehl was nearing four decades in the shoe business when he built this two story building in 1920.
Louie Johnson Sr. would later move his retail and repair business into the structure at 715 4th Street.
JOHANSEN MEAT MARKET: John Johansen bought Hulen’s Meat Market on 5th Street about 1914. He moved to this location,
712 4th Street, several years later. Sons Alexander and Norman joined their father to form the John Johansen & Sons Meat Market.
I.O.O.F. BUILDING: The home of the Orland Odd Fellows, 731 4th Street, has been at this location since 1910. Retail businesses
on the first floor have included general merchandise, groceries, and an antique store.
MASONIC TEMPLE: This three story “skyscraper” is at 732 4th Street and was built in 1912-13. The cornerstone is clearly visible
to the north of the front door. Bank of America was at this location for approximately 40 years.
ORLAND THEATRE: Now owned by Active Force Ministry—The Soda Shop at 809 4th Street has kept the marquee from the old
theatre. The first talking movies came to Orland in February 1930 and admission was 15 and 35 cents. The theatre was built
around 1913.
PURITY STORE: The chain of Purity Stores was established in 1929 and was liquidated in 1972. Stores were located from Fresno
to Eureka. The rounded roof was a distinctive feature of most all of the Purity Stores. The building is now owned by the City of Orland and will be renovated and used by the Orland Police Department.
LIBRARY PARK AND ARCH: A work day in 1916 brought in dirt from the high school and from Stony Creek to level this city
block. A Carnegie Foundation grant awarded Orland $8,000 for construction of the library in 1919-20. The Orland Women’s Improvement Club purchased the original lots before the city bonded itself for the remainder of the block for a city park. The new library structure was built in the early 1970s and the gazebo was dedicated in 2008. Library Park Arch, a smaller version of the Highway 99W arch, was dedicated May 2003. The original arch dates from 1926. Orland is the “City of Arches.”
ALTA SCHMIDT HOUSE MUSEUM: The home of C.F. Schmidt was built in 1902. It was presented to the Orland Historical & Cultural Society in 1985. It is opened free to the public on Sundays 2-5 p.m. May through October and at other times by appointment.
The yard may be rented for functions such as weddings and reunions.
ORLAND HARDWARE & IMPLEMENT: 820 5th Street, home of Orland Hardware & Implement store, was originally just a vacant
lot for George Wright to display his farm tractors and machinery. When Wright closed out his wagon-making and blacksmith shop
across the street, he concentrated on his hardware and implement business.
ORLAND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT FIREHOUSE: Founded in 1911, the Orland Fire Department usually rented space
in a local automobile garage to store their equipment. Following the death of A.B. Sanford (1926 Chief) in 1927, his widow made a
substantial donation to start a fire house building fund. Dedication of Orland’s firehouse, 810 5th Street, took place in 1954.
THE RICHELIEU: The Farwood Bar & Grill, 705 5th Street, is now on the site of The Richelieu. The remodel of the building includes the original wooden bar and was completed in 2007.
STAICH BILLIARD PARLOR: Built in 1917, this structure at 704 5th Street is now Pizza Palace. Interior walls contain vintage
photographs of neighboring buildings within two blocks of the business.
ANTIQUING AND “BOUTIQUING”
A visit to Orland cannot be complete without taking a moment to “stop and shop” in
a few of the town’s charming boutiques. An eclectic array of treasures, old
and new, can be found, and you are certain to be greeted with a shopkeeper’s
friendly smile.
Pure pleasure is yours as you savor the
scents of pampering bath and body products, or delight in a gift basket filled with
a bit of “local gourmet.”
Be pleasantly amused as you browse
through the curious clutter of scented
candles, vintage memorabilia, and unusual “finds” that fill the shelves. You will
want to be sure not to overlook the many
antiques that proudly display a shopkeeper’s wares!

AGRICULTURE: ORLAND’S ROOTS RUN DEEP
Without a doubt, the primary existence of the Orland community is attributed to agriculture. The fertile fields and flowing water drew the first settlers “en-masse.”
Today, Orland continues to be an agriculturally-based
community, surrounded by thousands of acres of “open
range” and fenced ranchland, nut and fruit trees, and field
crops.
Local 4-H and FFA groups are very active, and a visit to
the Glenn County Fair in Orland (mid-May) will impress
you with the hard work and dedication of those committed
to the agricultural industry.
Take a cross-country tour of the magnificent orchards
around Orland, especially in early spring when the almond
orchards are in bloom. You’ll savor the sweet smell and be
taken by the acres of “snowy” ground as the trees begin to
shed their blossoms. You’ll see an abundance of honeybees, as this area is also home to several of the nation’s
leading queen-producing apiaries.

Black Butte Area
PARKS AND RECREATION
The City of Orland takes pride in its many city
parks. Whether you’re in search of the whisper of
a gentle breeze through magnificent valley oaks
and pines, or the delightful cheer of a bleacher
full of baseball enthusiasts, Orland’s city parks
offer a respite from a day’s work or travel.
Orland’s new recreation center at Lely Aquatic
Park was completed in 2009, and offers a variety
of programs for the young and old.
In the center of town sits Orland’s Library Park,
the jewel of Orland. Thanks to the efforts of the
Arts Commission, lovely nostalgic lamps light its
curving promenade through the center of the tree
filled park. And in an age when so many small
cities are removing them, Orland built a beautiful,
old style gazebo. Designed by renowned artist
George Turnbull, the gazebo sits in the center of
the park where it’s the site for summer music
concerts, Christmas carol songfests, ice cream
socials, and many lovely wedding ceremonies.
If Orland’s summer heat is too much, you might
want to take a dip in the city swimming pool. The
pool includes diving and lap areas, as well as a
“kiddie” pool for the youngsters.
Drive 8 miles west of Orland and you will discover
Black Butte Lake. Built as part of the Bureau of
Reclamation’s irrigation project, Black Butte Lake
is surrounded by black basalt bluffs and valley
oak forests.
With 4,500 acres of water surface, a full-service
marina and three boat ramps to handle the needs
of boating enthusiasts, you’ll find as much excitement, or rest and relaxation, as you are looking
for. Enjoy camping, hiking, biking and horseback
riding, whether in developed campsites, or undeveloped trails. For information call (530) 8654781.
