CONNECTIONS Fernley Chamber of Commerce Newsletter July 2015 A Note from our President: Independence As a long time citizen of Fernley I have spent several Fourth of July Celebrations at the Out of Town Park. As far back as I can remember, the Fernley Fourth of July has been the premiere celebration. I have participated in most activities over the years including constructing and decorating a float with co-workers in 1998. We gathered in the heat at the end of Main Street by the NDOT yard at about 7am, all of us with young children ranging in ages from 1-12 years old, trying to keep them in check and in good spirits. Knowing that all of our friends and family would be seeing us and cheering us on as we celebrated the birth of our great nation was very exciting. Honestly as silly as it may seem, it was a proud moment in all of our lives. Horseshoe tournaments, boxing matches, country bands and softball games - I remember it all and cherish those memories. Hostile balloon fights on main street during the parade and a fire works show worthy of the rich and famous - that’s what small town living is all about. We may not be rich or famous, but we are blessed to have a community that knows how to celebrate our independence day. Thank you to the Fernley Fourth of July Committee for sharing your event with us. Like me, most people will walk away with memories they will cherish forever. Thank you! The Fernley Chamber of Commerce would like to extend their gratitude to Chet Ferrel of Ferrel Construction for installing the Main Street Banners. You can view pictures of these banners throughout the pages of this month’s newsletter. “This is a part-time job. We don't even know if this a salaried job or not yet. It's kind of strange when you're starting out from scratch.” Former Mayor David Stix, Jr., Reno Gazette Journal 2001 In This Issue On July 1, 2001, Fernley incorporated as a city with David Stix, Jr. as its first Mayor. 1 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce A Note from our President Fernley, Incorporated After Hours Calendar Chamber Calendar Fernley Golf Classic Metro Economic Indicator Chamber Board Members and Staff New and Renewing Members Member Spotlight New Member Profiles Churches Member Events Ribbon Cuttings Member News Ad Pricing Man Street Banner, installed by Ferrel Construction Main Street Banner, installed by Ferrel Construction 2 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce FERNLEY, INCORPORATED Sponsored and Hosted by the Fernley Chamber of Commerce Small, but Growing Fernley Prepares to Incorporate (Las Vegas Sun, Saturday, December 2, 2000) Senior citizen Neta Jones trudges past the tumbleweeds along the highway and then walks slowly up the sidewalk to the entrance. Patricia Kearns drives her truck past the Wigwam Restaurant, Lola's Chair beauty shop, Rico's Tacos and Fred's Fix-It auto shop before heading into the parking lot. Like everywhere else, the talk here is about the Nov. 7 election. But Fernley residents are not in a tizzy over the Bush-Gore deadlock. They have something more important to debate. On Election Day, Fernley residents voted 56 percent to 44 percent to incorporate their community of more than 8,000. Next July 1 - after voters elect a council and a mayor and decide whether to convert the local members of the Lyon County Sheriff's Department into their Police Department - Fernley officially becomes Nevada's 19th city. "I voted no," said Mary Khalar, who moved here from the Bay area two years ago. "I think we will have to pay high taxes. We moved here because it is a lot less expensive than California and we could have horses and cows." Kearns, a Los Angeles transplant, said she is happy about the incorporation. "Fernley is growing so fast we had to incorporate. Maybe we will get better services. Growth is going to come whether we like it or not. It is better we control it ourselves." This is no Grover's Corners, N.H., with neat row houses and white picket fences. Fernley is a hodgepodge of buildings. Old trailer courts are situated along Main Street near new shopping centers. Horses graze in grassy fields under cottonwood trees. The House of Pain tattoo parlor is across the street from the Fernley Chamber of Commerce. Fernley won't win any urban planning awards, but residents like it just fine. Over his morning cup of hot tea at the Wigwam, Lyon County Commissioner LeRoy Goodman said merchants are talking of building a new downtown district around a theme. "You get better planning with incorporation," he said. "It's a new era, exciting for Fernley." Goodman moved here from Virginia City 35 years ago to take a job teaching at the local high school. Everybody knew each other by name back then, when Fernley was just a struggling farming community. Wigwam owner Mary Royels remembers the time in the 1960s when she could not get an $8,000 loan to expand her thentiny hamburger business. The only bankers were 30 miles away in Reno and they weren't loaning anything to Fernley. But about five years ago, Joe and Patty Waide acquired a 4,500-acre private industrial park on the east side of town and started attracting businesses, very large businesses. Two years ago amazon.com opened a mammoth book distribution center in the industrial park. It is only one of more than a dozen huge businesses in Fernley. Publishing giant Quebecor prints the Sears catalog and "Parade," a Sunday newspaper supplement, in its Fernley outlet. Honeywell, MSC and Trek have businesses just down the block. The businesses were attracted by the relatively cheap land and Fernley's transportation hub location. The city is just outside the Reno metropolitan area along Interstate 80. The Union Pacific Railroad runs close to the industrial park. "The businesses have raised the income level and brought jobs to Fernley," Goodman said. "People who were commuting to Reno are staying here now." 3 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce FERNLEY, INCORPORATED Sponsored and Hosted by the Fernley Chamber of Commerce (Continued from page 3) He said Trek, a deck manufacturer, pays employees about $15 per hour and benefits. Others pay in the $10 an hour range. Before the industrial growth, Fernley's businesses generally paid minimum wage. The drive for incorporation was led by Fernley residents Kevin and Debra Brazell. Kevin Brazell said residents were tired of driving 45 miles to the county seat at Yerington for building permits and business licenses. "The county has done a good job, but we need more things than they can give us," he said. "We are doubling in population every five years and we need to have local people making decisions." Goodman and other county commissioners unanimously backed the incorporation effort. He maintains cityhood will reduce the layers of government in Fernley. He also expects the city will pick up about $650,000 in state tax revenue that otherwise would have gone to the county. The leading incorporation opponent was lifelong resident and Fernley Town Board Chairman David Stix Jr. "We were operating very efficiently with the town board for the taxpayers," he said. "It was going along smoothly." But after the voters spoke, Stix had a change of heart. He will be a candidate for Fernley mayor. "If you can't beat them, join them," Stix said jokingly. "I accept the voters' decision. I am now completely backing incorporation." He maintains there will be extra expenses with cityhood. Stix said the city must set up its own planning department and hire a city clerk. But he expects the community will retain its rural atmosphere. The town board has prepared a master plan that will allow a build-out to about 30,000 residents over 20 years and still Did You Know? There are 108 cities and towns in Nevada, of which 19 are incorporated. The smallest incorporated city in Nevada, as of 2013, is Caliente with a population of 1,169. "We want to maintain what drew the citizens here in the first place," Stix said. "Fernley's growth is starting to flatten out. The population peak has come." State Demographer Jeff Hardcastle said the population was 8,030 in 1999 and will increase to about 11,100 in 2010. Over the past 39 years, the Wigwam has grown from little more than a hole in the wall to the town's primary local gathering place. More than a restaurant, the building is a museum of Indian artifacts and western paintings. "We couldn't have made it without the growth," Royels said. Still, she said a small town closeness remains." "If something happens here and my husband is out of town, someone fixes it for me," Royels said. "People care." MEMBER SPOTLIGHT GIRETTE BARNES, FERNLEY ESTATES Through being raised in Brooklyn, OH, a large suburb of Cleveland, Girette always seemed to be drawn to a more rural lifestyle. She loved being active and outdoors, so after graduating from the University of Akron in 1990 with her RN degree, she began her travels and adventures. She moved to Florida where she met her husband, John, a Navigator for C130 planes in the US Coast Guard. Their busy life together with two children included being transferred to Hawaii where Girette continued work as a nurse in a skilled nursing home. Sacramento was their next Coast Guard transfer, which was about the same time the children flew the coop, and the young empty nesters enjoyed an even more active life full of recreation, including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, shooting, biking, and rock hounding. After John retired from the Coast Guard, he started a second career with the State of California while Girette continued her work as a nurse, specializing in long-term care. When John retired a second time, they decided to finally skip out of big city life and in late 2014, found Fernley. By January 2015, they and their cats had moved to Fernley and called it home, but low and behold, Girette was in for a surprise. She had previously worked with Darryl Fisher and Bill Holliday of Fernley Estates Assisted Living and Memory Care, and the timing was perfect for Girette to put her many years of long-term care experience to work. Bill Holliday offered her the position of Director of Marketing and Sales at Fernley Estates, working with a staff she already knew. Though Fernley Estates has been open and operating for just about a year, Girette has set the firm goal of working to get the facility up to full occupancy. Though her job includes getting the word out about Fernley Estates, she reflects on the satisfaction of helping those transition into whatever long-term living arrangement they need. She recalls one recent event in which she helped a Fernley woman move to California to live with her family. Perhaps the greatest satisfaction is seeing the number of residents whose health had actually improved substantially after moving into Fernley Estates. She attributes the improvement to a regular well-balanced diet, consistency in medication delivery, and relief from the pressures and stress of day-to-day living by themselves in the community. She is proud to have helped seniors with that kind of transformation. Since Girette’s relatives, including grandchildren, live in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Indiana, and North Carolina, she confesses to spending quite a bit of time skyping with family. In addition, Girette has found great recreation opportunities in the Nevada outback offering many adventures to her, her husband, and friends. Once again, she is able to enjoy hiking, biking, and rock hounding trips. She’s also found a new local church to call home. And, upon being asked if there is anything else she’d like to accomplished, she offered she would enjoy becoming more involved in the children’s bible study and ministry program at her church. Somehow, I think she will accomplish that goal too! Welcome to Fernley, Girette! We’re happy to call you a neighbor and applaud your contribution to Fernley seniors. 15 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce NEW MEMBER PROFILES New Member profiles are one of five possible ways for our new members to advertise themselves in our newsletter. The first way is in our listing of new members as you can see on the previous page. The second is in a profile. For our inaugural newsletter we invited all members who have joined between January 1, 2015 and April 30, 2015 to submit a profile of no more than 150 words and a picture that represents the individual or the business. A third possible avenue of advertising is through member events. If the business is holding an event at any time during the month the newsletter is published, we can post it if we are notified before the last week of the previous month. Fourth, we offer all our members the opportunity to share any relevant news with the community, whether that be a promotion, a new hire, a celebration, a retirement, etc. Again, the chamber needs to be notified prior to the last week of the previous month for that news to be included in the newsletter. Finally, new members can purchase ads of various sizes to be published in the newsletter. Please see page &&&*** for prices and sizes. They want to see great things. They want to do great things. But, they don’t always realize that the miraculous is a product, not of spontaneous combustion but, of step-by-step obedience and faithfulness to a cause or vision. It’s a commitment to something bigger than ourselves that eventually, and periodically, explodes into the realm of the miraculous. Many have lived their whole lives, faithful before God, for one episode of Reverend Duane Jenner, pictured with his wife, the miraculous. A time where their purpose in life reaches its pinnacle; Sandy, is the founding pastor of Crosswinds where God uses their faithful, continual obedience and brings forth the Assembly Church. incredible, the extraordinary, the amazing …the *miraculous*! My prayer, my desire is that we would all experience this wonderment in our lives; to be part of something divinely miraculous. A movement of God sparked, in part, by our willingness to prepare ourselves for the opportunity of such an event or happening. Unfortunately, some believe that the miraculous is a seldom occurrence, infrequent, rare; something that only happens once in a lifetime, and then of only a selected few individuals. But, I believe everyone can experience the miraculous and be instruments in bringing about the miraculous. The Christian worships (that is recognizes the great worth of, values, praises, and follows) the God of the miraculous! It is His Spirit, His Character that lives within the heart of the Christian; the true follower of Christ. Why then would the miraculous be absent from such an individual? We must not settle for anything less than the miraculous! We should expect that the music of our lives will, now and then, crescendo; that God will use us, that our lives will be a blessing to those around us, and that the ordinary will be overcome by the extraordinary. You’ve heard the phrase, ‘if you build it they will come?’ Well, understand; if you expect the miraculous and trust God for it, you will see it. Here are some unsolicited thoughts, some answers to the most common questions I heard, and fun facts for those of you who are interested. Fun Facts: Our doors were open for nearly 30 hours this weekend and we sold about 1,500 pounds of meat, more than 270 gallons of beer, 4,500 food items total and over 1,300 guests. wow I managed to squeeze in about 90 minutes of sleep in these 3 days and most of that came while sleeping in the parking lot by the smoker. Michael Candelario, Not So Fun Facts: We lost 7 parties to long tickets times which isn't ok Owner and Founder and we're better than that. We are making changes this week to make Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. sure that doesn't happen again. The potato salad and coleslaw sucked. I'm sorry and you can expect that to change today. Thank You: I really, really, really can't say it enough but thank you for everyone who came out to support us. Thank you to our great team of over 40 local residents that worked harder than I asked them and without a single complaint. Thank you for all the feedback, and a special thank you to all the bad feedback too. 25 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce The Fernley Area is expected to grow astronomically over the next few years as more and more businesses move into the RenoTahoe Industrial Park. As people move to our small city, the need for local businesses will also grow. We, at the Fernley Chamber of Commerce, want to share in the growth, specifically in encouraging new businesses to join the chamber and welcoming businesses to the community as they open. Last month, we, along with Mayor Roy Edgington, shared in the re-opening of Lake Tahoe Brewing Company. As you become aware of a new business coming to Fernley, please spread the word about the Chamber. We would love to be there as they open their doors to the Fernley community! RIBBON CUTTINGS (Continued from page 25) Commitment: We felt like this weekend was a success in many ways but are very aware of the things that need to improve. I can guarantee you that we are committed to being great and you'll be the first to notice. Random Thoughts: I've been part of nearly 15 restaurant in major cities like New York and Atlanta to my small childhood hometown of 4,500. I can confidently say that per capita, this was by far the craziest opening and I've never seen a community turn out like this one. So, thank you! Temporary Hours: This week we need a chance to make changes, hold additional training, and get things to our expectations. Therefore, we won't officially be opening for lunch ongoing until this Friday at 11am. After this Friday, we will open every day at 11am. Until then, we will open at 4pm Monday -Thursday of this week. Thank you for your patience. 10 Answers to Common Questions: 1) Our phone number provided to us is not working but will be fixed today. I will post that info when they fix it. 2) Our hours are posted in the paragraph above. 3) Our pizza oven will be online within two weeks. We are desperately working with the city to get this issue resolved that has been ongoing for over a month. 4) We ran out of food over the weekend here and there because we underestimated the crazy turnout. We will be prepared moving forward. But also be aware that BBQ is smoked about 8-12 hours in advance and is always limited supply. 5) The pricing structure of the menu and BBQ is a traditional set up. You aren't forced to order sides and you can order pounds of meat with a select amount of sides depending on the size of your party. Picture family style ordering 6) Pets are allowed on the patio. 7) We will consider smoking on one patio and update later. 8) Reservations only accepted for parties larger than 6 9) This place isn't swanky. Sorry. You eat nearly the whole menu with your fingers, our average item price is under $11, and we have a Simpsons pin ball machines. 10) There are two beer glass sizes and they vary depending on the beer style and alcohol level of your beer. They are 13 and 16 ounces. This Month This month, we’ll share in the opening of What Are You Missing? Chiropractic , owned by Dr. Jim Thompson,. 26 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce MEMBER NEWS Member news is one of five possible ways for all of our members to advertise themselves in our newsletter. The first way is in our listing of all our members as you can see on page 10. The second is in a profile. Beginning with our June newsletter, we will be profiling one renewing business per month. If you would like to be considered for our profile of the month, please contact the chamber for an interview. Depending on the interest, the newsletter may include two profiles per month. Finally, all members can purchase ads of various sizes to be published in the newsletter. Please see page 21 for prices and sizes. ARGONN The Animal Rescue Group of Northern Nevada (ARGONN) would like to remind the community that it’s summertime, and pets need to be protected. Never leave animals or children in a closed car. It is illegal to do so. Every year, children and pets die in vehicles. Inside, within 20 minutes or less, the temperature may reach up to 125° F. Cracking the windows does not help. Nevada State Law NRS 574.195 prohibits leaving a pet unattended in a parked car, with up to a $1000 fine. If you observe this on Monday through Friday, call the Fernley Animal Control officer at (775) 784-9801. You can also contact he Lyon County Sherriff’s office dispatch at (775) 577-5023 twenty-four hours a day. Backyard pets need shelter plus a source of food and water. Take care of those you love. For ARGONN resources, meeting times, and activities such as adoption fairs and fundraisers, visit www.argonn.org or call (775) 229-3708. The phone line is manned by volunteers. 27 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce Advertising sizes Ad Size 1 Month 3 Months 6 Months 1 year 1/2 Page $60 $55 x 3 = $50 x 6 = $45 x 12 = $540 1/4 Page $40 $35 x 3 = $30 x 6 = $25 x 12 = $300 1/8 Page $25 $20 x 3 = $15 x 6 = $90 $10 x 12 = $120 Please contact the Fernley Chamber of Commerce (775-575-4459 or [email protected]) to complete a contract. 28 • Connections • A Publication of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce Contact Us Advertise Here!
