Here in Bruges, we cherish not only the artists of the past, but also those of the present. Since it became Cultural Capital of Europe in 2002, the city has dedicated itself to becoming a breeding ground for contemporary art. The concert hall or Concertgebouw is the most striking example of this, but there have also been high-profile initiatives in the field of visual arts. For instance, in 2010, Belgian artist Luc Tuymans was the curator for the urban festival Bruges Central. In 2005, we organized the urban festival Corpus. The Cultuurcentrum also regurlarly stages exhibitions of contemporary art, for instance the Horizon series, which features international artists. This year, with Belgian artist Luc Zeebroek, better known as Kamagurka, we have yet again an important contemporary artist as our guest. Kamagurka came to Bruges bringing lots of love, first and foremost for his wife, but also for the city and the possibilities it offers to artists. Presenting contemporary art in a historic city is a challenge. Bruges is not a blank canvas. Each wall and each place has its own history. This poses limitations, but also stimulates the creativity of the artists wanting to work in this city. Kamagurka does not lack creativity or willpower in his endeavours to make something happen in Bruges. He has assembled a number of brilliant artists he relates to or has been inspired by. Interesting as that may already be, it is especially the way in which he presents and combines those artists that is an art work in itself. Visitors to the exhibition in the historic Garemijn hall will discover, on top of the displayed works, a fascinating spatial experience. In the Arentshuis, Kamagurka is currently creating new works that will illustrate his own artistic versatility. In this studio with adjoining exhibition space, he will regularly be visited by various artists to create new works of art. The project is entitled Kamarama. The name not only refers to the multifaceted panorama Kamagurka’s vast oeuvre represents, but also to his omnipresence in Bruges during the summer months of 2012. Several activities, generously seasoned with humour and cleverness, will take place in the city. Ladies and gentlemen, I hope the Kamarama project will be well received. Kamagurka appeals to a very wide and diverse public and I trust that he can also make a new audience take to contemporary art. When he looks at an artist’s works, many people gaze over his shoulder, including those who would not normally consider themselves art enthusiasts. I would like to thank Luc Zeebroek for the pleasant collaboration, the magnificent result of which we are able to see this summer. We sat together for many hours, even days. I would also like to thank everyone who has collaborated on the project as well as the organizers, Brugge Plus and Musea Brugge for their enthousiasm and collective effort. I hope that Kamarama will bring joy to many hearts and will add to the beauty and light-hearted atmosphere of this city. Patrick Moenaert Burgomaster of Bruges Kamarama – p.2 From May 1st until August 1st, 2012, artist, painter, theatre and television producer Kamagurka acts as curator for a special art project in Bruges: Kamarama. On several locations he will display his own works as well as works of other artists who inspire and fascinate him. It is an exhibition full of remarkable art, surprising perspectives and a certain amount of humour. 1. Kamarama in open air Accidentalism There are also art works in the streets of Bruges such as Kamagurka’s ‘accidental’ portraits of fictive people. 12 portraits are spread around the Arentshof garden and alongside the Dijver. If you think you recognize a family member, friend or acquaintance in one of the portraits, you can report this online. At the end of the project, Kamagurka will choose the one who is the best lookalike of one of his portraits. Oh, Boy! Yves Obyn created a very special art work for Kamarama. It represents a crashed Beechcraft Bonanza. A fanatic built his own airplane but because of the poor construction, it quickly crashed. The spectator is a disaster tourist, causing a congestion in the heart of Bruges due to the curiosity factor … Practical info When: From Tuesday May 1st 2012 until Wednesday August 1st 2012 Locations: Arentshof garden, Dijver and Gruuthusestraat Kamarama – p.9 3. Kamaboekarama In the public library ‘Biekorf’ you can visit a large selection of the voluminous book oeuvre of Kamagurka. In a few show glasses in the adult comic books section on the ground floor of the library you will see among other things his unfindable debut album ‘Verloren Inkt’, the limited edition (250 copies) silk-screen book ‘De Tweeëige Eenling’ with more than 100 silk-screen prints, a few exclusive Cowboy Henk comics; books with cartoons of Kamagurka in German, French and English and a few very special Kamagurka albums in very limited edition. But Kama is more than books alone: this mini-exhibition also contains a few ‘Kama memorabilia’ such as a plaster bust of Cowboy Henk, some record-covers, stamps, watches, T-shirts, badges, special mugs, cups… All these memorabilia come from private collections and Kamagurka’s own collection. Some of Kamagurka’s most remarkable cartoons will also be shown in the library. Schippers at 9 p.m. Roman Polanski’s Le Locataire (The Tenant) Practical info When: Thursday July 12th 2012 from 2.30 p.m. Location: Beach of Zeebrugge next to the event platform Entrance: free Kamarama – p.11 5. Johnny Dowd Kamarama is also about music. There will be a club concert of Johnny Dowd on May 10 in collaboration with Cactus Muziekcentrum. Johnny Dowd made his debut when he was 50 years old with mutated country noir and rusty roots rock. His experimental country and Americana can derail into a racket at any time. Johnny’s ominous songs are about cheaters, beggars, murderers and hopelessly in love souls. But they are mainly women. They become part of his absurd humour and hung up stories from the American underground scene. Could it be the perfect soundtrack to a David Lynch film? Or a trip through the wondrous world of Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart and Charles Bukowski? That is something we think about every time we hear his music! Dowd calls ‘No Regrets’, the new album he released on his own label Mother Jinx Records, ‘danceable’. ‘That is if you can dance and think at the same time.’ The songs are mainly duets and every last one of them is named after important women in his life. ‘Pseudonyms off course, to protect the guilty and the innocent.’ Practical Info When: Thursday May 10th 2012 at 8 p.m. Location: Cactus Club@ MaZ – 27, Magdalenastraat, Sint-Andries Tickets: € 8: in presale € 11: at the door € 6: with a Cactus Prikkaart More info: www.cactusmusic.be © Kat Dalton Kamarama – p.12 6.
