Superintendent`s NEWS - Kenowa Hills Public Schools
2015 Superintendent’s NEWS Superintendent Hopkins Dear Parents and Community Members: As I shared in previous issues of this publication, a Facility Study Committee met throughout 2014 to study the conditions of our schools, grounds, buses and technology. This committee of parents, community representatives and staff members presented its recommendation to the Board of Education last winter. Included in their recommendation was a Master Plan—a plan that addresses both current and future needs—allowing state funds to be used for our classrooms and day-to-day operations. After reviewing the committee’s recommendation, your Board of Education passed the necessary resolution to call for a Bond Election on May 5, 2015. Residents will be asked to consider authorizing borrowing $78,640,000, resulting in an approximate millage increase of 1.65 mills. For a homeowner, the proposed increase would cost approximately $82.50 per year for every $100,000 in market value of your home. A tax calculator has been added to our website at www.khps.org to provide you with a more accurate analysis of the tax implications of this proposal. As explained in greater detail on the following two pages of this newsletter, dollars generated by this proposed bond issue would be spent gradually in three series over a eight-year period to provide for the continuing needs of the district. There is no question that $78 million is a substantial amount. You can be sure, however, that this need was studied extensively by the Facility Study Committee and by your Board of Education. Monies from the bond would be used for four key, districtwide areas: (1) Safety and Security; (2) Enhancing Educational Environments; (3) Technology; and (4) Aging Facilities. Visuals to show how our schools would be enhanced are displayed at each school. Please take time to review these boards the next time you visit your child’s school. This information is also on our website, www.khps.org, Facebook, www.facebook.com/kenowahillsps and Twitter, @KenowaHills. Community forums have been scheduled to answer questions and discuss the projects in great detail as follows: April 14, 6pm – Early Childhood Center April 21, 6pm –Kenowa Hills Middle School April 15, 6pm – Zinser Elementary School April 22, 6pm – Central Elementary School April 20, 6pm – High School Performing Arts Center April 29, 6pm – Alpine Elementary School Kenowa Hills has always been a district that values fiscal responsibility and continues to demonstrate prudent management of funds. Most recently, the district refinanced bonds that will save $2.1 million in future tax payments. Even with an approximately 1.65 millage increase, Kenowa Hills would still have one of the lowest millage rates for capital projects in the region. Please take time to review the information included on our website and on the following two pages. If you have questions about any of this information, please contact my office at 784-2511, and don’t forget to exercise your right to vote on May 5 th. Each guest spent approximately 15 to 20 minutes reading to various classes. Special thanks to the following individuals for taking time to read to students: Alex Arends, Alpine Township Supervisor; Katie Beckett, Kent School Services Network Clinician; Melissa Courtade, Board of Education Vice President, Gerald Hopkins, Superintendent; Curt Orsinger, Board of Education President; Katie Pennington, High School Principal, Madison Rasch, 2015 Apple Court; and Nick Vanderhyde, Alpine Elementary Interventionist. A special thanks is also extended to Maria Kenyon, school librarian, for selecting books for our guests to read. Grand Rapids Civic Performs at Alpine Elementary Second- through fifth-grade students were delighted to a performance of The Hundred Dresses by the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre Traveling Troupe. The young actors and actresses mesmerized our students with their presentation of The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes—a story about the powerful impact of bullying. Strumming Strings Strengthens Students Ukuleles are being used in classes through the USA and around the world. Like the recorder, the ukulele is becoming a standard teaching instrument. The Kenowa Hills Education Foundation generously awarded a grant to Alpine to purchase a set of ukuleles to be used by fifth-grade students. Students are enjoying rising to the challenge of learning to play a stringed instrument. Learning to play an instrument improves concentration and academic skills, teaches discipline and builds self-esteem. Performing with a band or orchestra improves communication and listening skills as well as cooperation and collaboration. Playing an instrument engages children in a participatory experiential process. Alpine music teacher, Ms. Majchrzak, looks forward to students increasing their understanding, ability and love of music. The Traveling Troupe is an outreach program whose purpose is to bring the theater to children who may not have oportunity to visit the theatre. A special thanks to Mrs. McVey for applying to receive a performance at no cost. Alpine Honors Choir A few Alpine students have been selected to join the Alpine Honors Choir. This is a performance enrichment group of select students from grades two through five. Students who accepted this honor have a love for singing and desire to develop their performance abilities. Selections were made based upon interest and musical ability. Students must demonstrate the following characteristics to remain in the group: be a good example for others, both academically and morally; have a willingness to rehearse every Thursday after finishing lunch; and attend rehearsals and performances. Members should also be outstanding citizens in their classes and are expected to exemplify appropriate behavior at all times. This choir will perform at the talent show at the High School PAC on April 27th. Thank you to Ms. Majchrzak for going above and beyond to develop the talents of our students. Central Connections a note from Mrs. Horner, Central Elementary Principal The beginning of 2015 started out with a bang! On behalf of Miss Bush, the staff and me, thank you to all parents and families who made the past few months a success! Our PTO sponsored a family glow dance in January. Students wore their neon colors and danced the night away with face painting and a photo booth. Teacher work day in February was another overwhelming success. We had to send for more teacher work because so many parents volunteered. Fifth-grade families packed the high school on a Monday night for the Famous American Wax Museum. The students raised money for Kid’s Food Basket. Thank you for supporting not only Central students, but students across Michigan. Families also supported Central during parent-teacher conferences. Our goal is to have 95 percent of our parents attend a conference. Thank you for helping us meet that goal. Not only was February filled with love, but we were able to warm up our hearts and shake the winter blues with our multiage day and Jump Rope for Heart. Students participated in many heart-healthy activities including yoga. A few weeks prior to this event, we hosted a jump rope exhibition, where students from all grade levels demonstrated their mastery of tricks. Central students and staff raised over $4,000 to benefit students suffering with heart disease. We are so proud of our school! Central continues to make strides toward academic greatness. On February 26th, all three KHPS elementary schools hosted a J2X meeting. J2X is the district’s personal mastery system that honors students’ strengths and growth areas while focusing on learning, high academic expectations, and character development. In a performance-based system, students are met at their level of instruction, can excel in their areas of strength, spend more time in their areas of needed growth, take ownership of their learning, and have a realistic picture of what they know and what they can do. Central started an after-school tutoring program called AfterSchool All Stars. This tutoring program targets fourth- and fifthgrade math students. Students meet three times each week for one hour and 15 minutes each session. The math classes are taught by teachers in a small-group setting. In addition to math instruction, students receive a snack and transportation if needed. Go Knights! Central Shines! Photos from top to bottom: Glow Dance; Famous Americans 1, Famous Americans 2, Rope Tricks, Jump Rope for Heart Zinser Zone Wild about Reading Students went “wild” during Zinser’s Wild about Reading theme, March is Reading Month. A great schedule of events engaged and excited students and families to participate in reading. Students enjoyed wearing wild clothes and wild hats during the month. Classrooms read to one another, providing a great opportunity for younger students to show off their reading skills and for older students to read aloud to the younger children. Students also enjoyed D.E.A.R. time when they Dropped Everything and Read. The pictures below depict some of the great fun students enjoyed during March is Reading Month. Remember to take time to read with your family! It Takes Heart to Be a Hero For the fifth consecutive year, Zinser students participated in a feel-good fundraiser, Jump Rope for Heart. The American Heart Association sponsors the event each year in hopes to raise awareness of heart disease, especially in children. Throughout February, students learned and shared ways they could help others by keeping their own heart healthy through nutrition and activity. In physical education class, students learned jumping patterns, songs, tricks and games for single ropes, long ropes and Chinese jump ropes. The American Heart Association thanked participants with gifts and prizes. The NED Show The NED Show visited Zinser in January to deliver a very positive message: Never give up; encourage others; do your best. 2015 Spelling Bee Math Mania th th Congratulations to the Zinser 4 - and 5 -grade spelling bee finalists! The students did very well with Zoe Paskewicz and Laine Zemaitis moving on to the regional competition. Every Thursday at 1 PM teachers and students participate in Math Mania. This 30-minute building wide math time was designed to help build excitement and achievement in math. Sister classrooms are sometimes used for various grade levels to work together. The students learned steps to salsa, meringue and bachata. The classes were joined by Mr. Smith, Mrs. Pennington, Mr. Haik, the high school office secretaries as well as Officer Erhardt at different times throughout the day. Students were also treated to hot chocolate with cinnamon and buñuelos. Mrs. DeVries made the buñuelos throughout the day and was assisted by her daughter Kali and friends. It was a great way to celebrate the Christmas season while learning some cultural components from various Spanish speaking countries. Lucas Isenga Wins Full Scholarship Aquinas College is pleased to announce that Kenowa Hills High School senior Lukas Isenga is the recipient of college’s most prestigious scholarship award, the Jerome C. Congratulations to Collin Cole for his narrative, Gettysburg; Maria Donihue for Mud Run of the Century; Abby Hammond for Brakes; and Kendra Shell for The Best Live. Curtains Close on 2015 Musical Orchestra Notes The orchestra program strives to create high quality music during daily rehearsals. Students are proud of their accomplishments and are always working to better their performance abilities. Students are also are involved in many after-school events including the spring musical, performances at the Home for Veterans, and a new addition to the program this year, Chow and a Concert. The Kenowa Hills Theatre Department presented its 2015 musical, Curtains, in March. This comedic whodunit captured and kept the attention of old and young alike as gifted KHHS actors and musicians took the stage under the co-direction of Mr. Reed Bretz and Ms. Mary Rademacher Reed, supported by a pit orchestra directed by Mr. Frank Hillyard. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the arts at Kenowa Hills High School. Following are a few photos from the performance: Through the generosity of the Grand Rapids Symphony, students can purchase tickets to concerts at a great discount. Any full-time student may purchase a ticket for just $5! For more information, please visit their website at www.grsymphony.org/studentpassport. Students have attended three concerts this season. Dressed in their finest, they first enjoy dinner out, then purchase tickets and attend Upbeat, a pre-concert lecture that gives insight into the music, composers and performers. At a recent concert, the “Ruby” Stradivarius violin was performed by Philippe Quint, and guest conductor Marcelo Lehninger wowed the crowd. Students had the opportunity to hear masterwork literature, and were talking about the performance all the way home. This experience is exceptional, and Director Weston Hosler hopes all students will have an opportunity to attend a concert this season. Every student should have this experience. The Kenowa Hills Orchestra would like to invite you to their spring performance on May 7, at 7:00 pm at the Kenowa Hills Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and anyone can attend. Students are currently rehearsing music from many genres, including fiddle, classical, and even music from Pirates of the Caribbean, where members of the band program join the orchestra for a full orchestra experience. The concert is sure to be rewarding for all who attend, so mark your calendars, and join us on May 7th. KHPS 2015 Theatre Day Camp June 15-19 from 9am-12pm $75/child for children entering grades 3-7 in fall 2015 Orchestra students enjoyed a night at the symphony. Be assured that your child’s safety is always our top priority. Each school holds tornado safety drills during the year. Questions often arise regarding the difference between procedures during a tornado watch and tornado warning. When a tornado watch is in effect, the district will continue normal activities but move outside activities inside. A staff member will be responsible for continuously monitoring the watch while students are on the premises. School will not be dismissed early. The decision whether to cancel evening events will be made on a case-by-case basis. When a tornado warning is in effect, staff will proceed with all students to the tornado shelter areas. No student shall be allowed out of the designated area unless a parent comes to the school and requests the student be released to them. All evening activities will be canceled under a warning. HOST A STUDENT H osting an exchange student is a great cultural learning experience for your family. CETUSA (Council for Educational Travel, USA) places exchange students with host families. Good host families are needed for two opportunities. Host families provide an English-speaking environment, three meals each day and a bed.
