Dear Friends:
Welcome!
Welcome to our 15th Annual HeArt of Giving Gala benefiting the Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas! I hope you enjoy this wonderful
evening of fine food, wine and art as much as we have enjoyed planning and
preparing this special event for you.
When contemplating this year’s new art-inspired theme, our
2013 Gala Committee felt that the Keep Memory Alive Event
Center would be the perfect venue to celebrate our 15th year as a
Ronald McDonald House here in Las Vegas. Renowned architect
Frank Gehry’s dramatic and seemingly wounded exterior reflects
the impact on the lives of our families, whose worlds have been
shaken by the critical illness or injury of a child. And the inspiration for the image
gracing the front of this year’s Gala invitation and program came from the heartshaped smoke billowing from the chimney of our RMHC logo
depicting the “House that Love Built.”
For brick by brick, it was love that built the Ronald
McDonald House here in Las Vegas 15 years ago – And it
has been love that has kept our doors and our hearts open
ever since that first weary and worried family crossed our
doorstep back in July of 1998.
Tonight, we gather as friends and supporters of the Ronald McDonald House
mission to provide comfort and care to families in need of physical, financial, and
emotional support. And we honor both Sunrise Children’s Hospital and Children’s
Heart Center of Nevada for being our trusted partners from the very beginning in
the long journey of healing all of our families face.

Swayd is a Las Vegas Based AC/Contemporary band; An homage
to the highly celebrated standard, ‘Sway,’ originally recorded by Dean
Martin. Original music and interesting covers deliver an exciting and
energetic performance.
All it takes is one listen to know they’re decades ahead of their fellow
musical peers. Recently discovered by Las Vegas Headliner of the year
and #1 Billboard charted artist, Frankie Moreno, today they have and
write their own original pop music and they’re determined to invigorate
and bring fresh ideas to modern contemporary music. The youngest
opening act in Las Vegas history, Tommy Ward & Swayd are the opening
act for Moreno’s show at The Stratosphere.
Although he’s only 17 years old, Tommy Ward is an old soul. Often
dubbed “Baby Buble,” the past is present in his music and lyrics. A
soulful jazz influence meets a contemporary pop sound. The result is
original music that appeals to every generation. An accomplished and
recognized performer, Tommy has had the privilege of sharing the stage
with celebrities and seasoned veterans of the music industry, and he has
headlined in many Vegas venues, including: The Stratosphere, The LVH,
The Smith Center, The House of Blues, Vinyl at the Hard Rock, Cabaret
Jazz, and many others. Learn more at SWAYDMUSIC.COM.

Mark & Mercedes
Mark and Mercedes have been voted “Best Radio Personalities”
13 times in the Las Vegas Review Journal’s annual Best of Las Vegas
Readers Poll. The show
has also been named
“Best Radio Morning
Program” by Las Vegas
Weekly, CityLife, Las Vegas
CitySearch and Women In
Communication (organizers
of the annual Las Vegas
Electronic Media Awards).
Nationally, Mark and
Mercedes have been named
“Best Local Morning Show”
by FMQB magazine and
“Local Air Personalities of
the Year” by Billboard and
Airplay Monitor magazines.
More About Mark
It all began with a “Mr.
Microphone” at the age of
six on Christmas Day. From
that point on, it was obvious
that radio was in Mark’s
blood and that he was destined to host the top rated “Mark and Mercedes
in the Morning” show heard weekday mornings on Mix 94.1. Mark grew up
in Broomsfield, Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado in
1994, majoring in Business Administration, before landing his first job in
radio at Denver’s KQKS-FM. Mark is a single father, who’s true passion in
life is raising his daughter Alexa with all his heart and soul.
More About Mercedes
From fashion to sports to favorite font (new favorite: Century Gothic),
Mercedes loves talking about it all. Married with two girls, Mercedes takes
it all on, working, raising a family and is a recent graduate of UNLV. Who
says you can’t do it all? A Yankee/Nuggets/Broncos fan, she loves her
sports, along with music (everything from Edith Piaf to Ice Cube) and
shopping (everything from Target to Saks). Born and raised in Colorado,
Las Vegas has been Mercedes’ home since 1997 and she loves the sense of
community, the entertainment and, of course, Wayne Newton!
Welcome Master of Ceremonies Mark and Mercedes.
All for the cause!
Auctioneer
Christian Kolberg
We are pleased this evening, to have
auctioneer Christian Kolberg with us.
Christian is one of North Americas
most prominent charity benefits
auctioneers having auctioned such
benefits as the Big Ticket Charity
Gala for Super Bowl XLII; The
Music Cares Benefit for the Grammy
Foundation and other events,
for over 150 different non-profit
organizations.
Kolberg feels the best explanation
ever provided about his auctioning
skills was that it is a gift from God.
“I like that because I can’t explain it any other way.” If not for
an auctioneer that was a no-show at a charity event Kolberg was
attending some 18 years ago, he admits he might never know the
joy of helping non-profit organizations raise the funds needed to
support their worthwhile endeavors.
From local charities to national causes Kolberg has auctioned
“almost one of everything” including one time, the shirt off a man’s
back and the shoes off a celebrities feet. “It was great fun watching
one leave the stage in a t-shirt and the other in his socks,” he said.
“Best of all their hearts were in the right place.”
We are pleased that Christian is joining us.

Founder’s Daughters
The first Ronald McDonald House® opened on October 15, 1974 in
Philadelphia thanks to Dr. Audrey Evans, Philadelphia Eagles’ player
Fred Hill (whose daughter, Kim, had leukemia), Leonard Tose, owner
of the Eagles, Jim Murray, the Eagles’ general manager and Ed Rensi,
the McDonald’s regional manager. Tonight, we have the honor of
welcoming the daughters of Leonard
Tose, Susan Tose Spencer and
Nan Tose Schwartz.
An experienced interior designer and
artist, Nan Tose Schwartz has lived
in the southwest for many years and
gives her time to help local Hospice in
Las Vegas.
Working for her father, Susan Tose
Spencer was the first female to hold
the position as General Manager of an
NFL team. In addition to her experience as the GM and attorney for an
NFL Team, Spencer is an entrepreneur and award winning author. Her
book is entitled “Briefcase Essentials.”
Today, a Las Vegas resident, Spencer formerly hosted a sports radio
show on KDWN and she has been approached to co-host an all Sports
station this year. Her latest challenge is a new foundation she founded,
www.alevelplayingfield.org, which supports high school football
programs in Las Vegas.
In a blog published on phillymag.com, Spencer shared, “My dad was
happiest when
he was helping
others. Watching
the energy and
enthusiasm he put
into starting the
Ronald McDonald
House charities,
and the look on
the faces of many
of the parents that
were helped by his
efforts, was Leonard
at his very best.”1
We are pleased to welcome the daughters of Leonard Tose,
Susan Tose Spencer and Nan Schwartz.

Artist Jean Francois
Jean Francois has become the most sought after event painter, traveling
the world for special appearances from Las Vegas to Hong Kong, Milan,
Paris, Tokyo, London and Monaco. Born in Namur, Belgium, Jean
Francois Detaille discovered his passion for art at an early age. His father’s
hobby was painting and on vacations with his parents in Spain and the
South of France, Jean Francois would watch the local artists create on-thespot portraits for tourists.
In 1975, after a chance
meeting in Figueras, Spain
with the flamboyant artist
Salvador Dali, Jean Francois
realized that the quiet life
of the studio artist was not
for him. In 1976 he enrolled
in the Academy des Beaux
Art in Belgium to develop
his talent along more formal
lines. Upon completion, he
enrolled in the Academy des
Beaux Arts in Paris.
Working with explosive
energy and without
preliminary plans or
sketches, Jean Francois uses
forceful strokes of vibrant
color to fill large canvases
in minutes. He explains
that working at this rapid
pace opens a more direct channel between the image in his mind and the
motions of his hands, giving the finished work greater immediacy and
power. Learn more at extremeart.com.
With pleasure, RMHC welcomes Jean Francois Detaille.
Keeping Families Together
The best medicine for a sick child is having mom and dad at their side. A study
published July 23, 2013, in Families, Systems and Health, finds that families who
stayed together at a Ronald McDonald House®, for even a portion of their seriouslyill child’s hospital stay, believed their ability to stay nearby helped their child recover
and spend less time in the hospital. Funded by UniHealth Foundation and Ronald
McDonald House Charities® , the study gathered more than 2,000 surveys over a
three year period. Write-in comments offered more insight into the challenges families
face as parents referenced:
• the enormous financial burden they face and how the House program helped
offset these pressures;
• the important psychosocial support they received from other families going
through similar circumstances, staff, and volunteers; and
• the greater participation they were able to have in their child’s health care and
recovery by being close by.
Celebrating 15 Years
Since opening its doors in 1998, Ronald McDonald House in Las Vegas has provided
temporary shelter to more than 3,500 families. Last year the House sheltered 210
families, including 482 adults and 201 children who were supporting sick children in
local hospitals.
In addition to the House, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater Las
Vegas creates and supports programming to directly improve the health, education,
and well-being of children in our community. Thousands benefit from these programs
each year:
Lunch Is On Us volunteers prepare and deliver 600 sack lunches each week to
families staying with their children at local hospitals, touching the lives of the
families who stay with us at the House, as well as hundreds more - both traveling
and local families - each weekday.
Ronald McDonald House Care Mobile is provided in partnership with Nevada
Health Center’s Miles for Smiles, who administers the mobile dental clinic,
providing access to free dental care for underserved children across rural Nevada.
RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program awards an average of $300,000
each year to local high school seniors. McDonald’s of Greater Las Vegas raised and
donated $224,000 to help with scholarships this year. Thank you McDonald’s
Owner|Operators.
Support for RMHC of Greater Las Vegas primarily comes from local fundraising efforts
and community donations - all remaining within Nevada. This event, our Annual Food
Drive, Runnin’ for the House, and community fundraisers all contribute. Thank you for
being a part and be sure to save these dates & this QR Code for these important events.

Gala Honoree
Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Las Vegas
is pleased to recognize Sunrise Children’s Hospital
as the 2013 Gala Honoree.
As a top destination for pediatric medicine, Sunrise Children’s Hospital frequently
cares for patients who are not residents of the Las Vegas Valley. As such, families
often find themselves at the hospital (and away from their homes) for days,
weeks, even months at a time. We know that having mom and dad at the bedside
is the best medicine, and cannot thank the Ronald McDonald House® enough
for providing a welcoming, comfortable environment for our families to reside in
their time of need.
For nearly 55 years, Sunrise Hospital &
Medical Center and Sunrise Children’s
Hospital have been caring for our
community and beyond. Sunrise
Children’s Hospital is the largest and
most comprehensive children’s hospital
in Nevada, and the only hospital in the
state to offer a pediatric cardiology and
cardiac surgery program.
The relationship between Sunrise
Ronald McDonald® recently visited the children
Children’s Hospital, Children’s
at Sunrise Children’s Hospital in celebration of
the 15th Birthday of Ronald McDonald House.
Heart Center of Nevada, and Ronald
McDonald House Charities make
world-class pediatric heart care available in our own backyard. In addition, we
offer the state’s largest and most comprehensive Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
(PICU) and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our team is highly
trained to care for the tiniest patients and the sickest children, using advanced
technology and evidence-based medicine.
On behalf of RMHC of Greater Las Vegas and the families we serve, we are
proud to recognize Sunrise Children’s Hospital for their ongoing commitment to
providing families with the most comprehensive children’s hospital in Nevada
and continually working with RMHC and Children’s Heart Center of Nevada to

House Hero
Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Las Vegas
is pleased to recognize Children’s Heart Center
of Nevada as the 2013 House Hero.
“Heart” is something that Ronald McDonald House and Children’s Heart
Center (CHC) certainly have in common. CHC has provided medical care for
children with congenital heart disease since 1980. The House has provided
lodging, meals, and transportation for more than 3,500 families since its
doors opened 15 years ago. Both CHC and RMHC put patients and families
first, continually working together.
The partnership continues to grow. Irma Casanova, a Social Worker at
CHC says, “I can’t remember a time when at least one of our families wasn’t
staying at Ronald McDonald House. “Ronald McDonald House goes above
and beyond to take care of our heart families!”
The physicians and staff of CHC care for the entire family. Having a child
with a serious heart condition can place a tremendous strain on everyone.
CHC works hard to try to alleviate as much of that stress as possible. CHC
provides education, counseling, grief recovery services, and moderates
support groups.
Through its Family Assistance Support Team and non-profit Children’s Heart
Foundation, CHC identifies and aids families
in need of financial, travel, and medical
emergency assistance, clothing, meals, toys,
etc. Steven Eisen, CEO of CHC says, “Ronald
McDonald House is a critical resource for
the many families that travel to Las Vegas to
receive state-of-the-art cardiac care.”
RMHC of Greater Las Vegas is proud to
recognize Children’s Heart Center as our
2013 House Hero. On behalf of the staff, our
families and friends of RMHC, thank you for
having a big “Heart” for our littlest hearts.

Grace’s Story
“Panic hit me like a
ton of bricks,” says
Shondale Myers, who
was only 24 weeks
along in her pregnancy
when she went into
full labor. “I knew it
was too early.” In fact,
little Gracie Marie
Myers was coming 15
weeks too early!
Shondale remembers
the immense pain and
having to say goodbye
to her fiancé, Kurtis,
when she was taken by
Flight for Life from the
small medical center in her hometown of Bullhead City to Sunrise Children’s
Hospital in Las Vegas. Kurtis watched as Shondale’s helicopter lifted off.
He then raced home to pack a bag and drive to the hospital, which was two
hours away.
Shondale says she was so relieved when Kurtis arrived at the hospital. “I
was really happy to see a familiar face. I was so scared because I didn’t know
what to expect.” Shondale says a doctor braced her for the worst, telling her
babies as young and small as hers rarely survived, but Shondale says she
was too much in shock to really understand what was happening. However,
within moments of Grace’s delivery, Shondale says the look on Kurtis’ face
told her just how serious the situation was. “My baby is supposed to cry.
Why isn’t she crying?” is all
Shondale kept thinking.
Later in the recovery room,
Shondale learned her
daughter weighed just one
pound, nine ounces, and
she was not able to breathe
on her own because her
lungs were not developed.
Shondale knew her precious baby girl might not even make it through the
night. And if she did, there would be tremendous challenges in the days,
weeks, and months ahead.
Wanting to spend as much time as possible with her fragile newborn,
Shondale says she was so thankful when a social worker at the hospital
referred her and Kurtis to the nearby Ronald McDonald House in Las
Vegas. Home was two hours each way in another state, and a motel was
out of the question with the mounting medical bills the couple was already
facing. Plus, Shondale and Kurtis are also raising and caring for 11-year-old
Christion. So, the Ronald McDonald House opened its doors and its staff
and volunteers opened their arms to welcome the family in July of 2012.
Dad, mom, and big brother were not only able to stay together at the
House, but also to be just minutes away from Grace at all times as she was
expected to be in the
neonatal intensive
care unit for several
months.
“The Ronald
McDonald House is
definitely a home,”
says Shondale.
“Everyone is so warm
and welcoming. We
have made some
really good friends.
And the staff aren’t
just staff – they’re
family.” Along with
celebrating Baby
Grace’s milestones,
the family also celebrated Kurtis’ and Christion’s birthdays at the House
last year. As Grace approached a healthy 7 pounds on the scale, the family
prepared to begin their new life together – knowing that even during their
darkest days, the Ronald McDonald House helped make sure that nothing
would keep them apart.
Since Grace left the hospital, the Myers relocated to the
area to be closer to doctors. For Grace’s first birthday,
her family held a Peter Pan Birthday Party at Ronald
McDonald House ... she is already giving to help others.
Scan this QR Code to see photos of Grace’s party.
GIFT of HOME
Tonight you have the opportunity to give the Gift of Home to families with ill or
injured children in local hospitals, providing shelter and support when they need
it most. Gifts will assist the Ronald McDonald House in providing lodging to

Ronald McDonald House Charities® was founded on
one simple premise: sick kids heal faster when they’re
with family. And while your loose coins may not seem
like much, when everyone comes together, they add
up fast. One full RMHC® Donation Box could provide a
night’s stay at a Ronald McDonald House® for a family

Research show children heal faster and
cope better with their family nearby.
So, while Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater
Las Vegas can’t make medicine taste better or take away painful
treatments, we can help ensure children have the most
important weapon close by during their fight - their family.
Steadfast supporters, like you, have made it possible to serve
more than 3,500 families since 1998. Thank you!
Consider a gift today. During our Gala, you can give using your
cell phone. If you have not registered, text “heart” to 68494.
Then, simply text GIVE and the dollar amount you wish to give,
and children
a year.
no “$” needed.
Example:
GIVE 100.
Proceeds from HeArt of Giving Gala benefit
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas.
