{ week one & three } Sr. Maria Pares’ Basketball Camp Two sessions: June 28-July 2 & July 12-16, 9 am- 3 pm, girls entering grades 3-9 Coach: Sr. Maria Pares ‘58, SHA Varsity basketball coach and former head coach at Marquette University. SEPARATE APPLICATION REQUIRED, PLEASE CALL 834-2101 EXT 301 TO REQUEST. School of Rock { week one } June 28-July 2 Bring out the rocker in you! This camp will explore many aspects of songwriting - including inspiration and craft, composition, and performance with award-winning musician and songwriter Alison Pipitone. Your week will include an exploration of building a song, looking closely at the lyrics of some your favorite songs, writing your own lyrics, developing a melody for your song, and creating a group song. You’ll learn the process of putting music to words, exploring the art of performance, using a microphone and singing, and finallyrecording a song to take home and share with your family and friends. No experience necessary; just a willingness to meet your inner rocker! June 28-July 2 AM camp Instructor: Alison Pipitone Alison Pipitone is a nationally recognized award-winning singer, guitarist and songwriter and has been performing with the Alison Pipitone Band for the past ten years and most recently the band, Girls Gone Mild. She is a seven-time winner of the Buffalo Music Award for Top Original Female Vocalist (2003-2008) and her band garnered the Top Original Rock Band Award in 2005. She has toured extensively throughout the United States, opening for a variety of bands including Barenaked Ladies, Lowest of the Low, and 5440. A Book of Your Own: Poetry and Bookmaking Work closely with a professional writer from Just Buffalo Literary Center, discovering new and creative ways to turn your ideas and dreams into poems. Specific lessons include: developing your writer’s voice, composing a personal statement, exploring your inner personality and poetic sensibility. The camp will end with learning paper folding and bookbinding techniques to make your own handmade artist’s book. Don’t miss this chance to share your writing talents with family and friends! June 28-July 2, AM camp Instructor: Margaret Konkol, Just Buffalo Literary Center Margaret Konkol is a Ph.D. student in the Poetics Program at SUNY Buffalo. She received her M.A. from the University of Virginia and her B.A. from Reed College. Her poems have found homes in Small Press Collective, Rude Girl Press, Buffalo Vortex, Fusion and Love Factory. Sculpture Camp: Create Yourself in 3-D { week two } July 5-9 Using a variety of materials and techniques, create a small scale model of yourself as well as a life-size sculpture! You will explore 3-D art including gesture and pose and how it communicates emotion and ideas. Add a collage to your sculpture to make it truly a one-of-a-kind work of art. July 5-9, AM camp Instructor: Shirley Tokash Verrico, Art Educator For the past 15 years, Shirley Tokash Verrico has worked in Western New York as an educator, artist, and cultural critic. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts and Humanities and is a NY State Certified art teacher. Her artwork and her writing explore the use of art to communicate ideas beyond the simple production of the object itself. Ms. Verrico teaches students that art is about ideas and as artists, they must be thinkers as well as makers. Babysitting 101: How to Start a Babysitting Business Everything you need know to launch your own babysitting business! Begin with the two-day Red Cross certification course; thenlearn how to market your babysitting business through creation of personalized flyers and business cards; engage in activities designed for all ages; and finally put your skills to the test with a day of hands-on learning from diaper changing, bottle making, game playing and more with kids from infants to toddlers. July 5-9, PM camp, girls ages 11-15, only Instructor: Faculty from the American Red Cross, and Melanie Whitney, SHA Science teacher and Mom of two young girls Cheerleading Camp This cheerleading camp is for both beginner and experienced cheerleaders. You will be introduced to the basics of cheerleading, including motions, jumps, cheers, sidelines, and dances. For the more experienced cheerleader, you will have the chance to work on basic stunting technique and routines to take back to your elementary school teams. July 5-9, PM camp Instructor: Kirsten Smith Kenny ‘96, SHA Dance teacher and Cheerleading coach A Leadership Experience This program encourages young women to explore and practice skills in the 5 B’s of Leadership: Becoming a young adult leader, Belonging to a community called school, Believing in God and one’s own self, Building relationships and Bettering our world. If you would like to be considered for admission to this program please attach a letter of interest and/or a recommendation from a teacher or principal with the application. Each participant is eligible for a $250 tuition credit to Sacred Heart Academy upon registration for the 2011-12 school year. July 5 – 9, 9 am – 3 pm girls entering grade 8 only Instructor: Maria Clare ‘95, SHA Religion teacher & campus minister Science Camp: Lotions and Potions! { week three } July 12-16 This is a hands-on camp where you will learn the science behind “Lotions and Potions” and explore the fun and fabulous world of beauty products. Design (and take home) your own products like soaps, bath fizzes as well as learn how candy is made and design your own personal treat. One field trip will be taken during the week. July 12-16, AM camp Instructor: Melanie Whitney ‘96, SHA Science teacher Art Camp: The Sky’s the Limit Have you ever wanted to take a ride on a Hot Air Balloon? During this week we will use a variety of art materials to make our own sculptural hot air balloon mobiles and use art as a way to talk about each of our own strengths, and identify our goals and dreams that we want to rise to, individually and as a group. We will conclude with our own mini hot air balloon launch — and we’ll launch ourselves as well into our own bright futures! Emphasis on fun and creativity — no art talent required! July 12-16, AM camp Instructor: Lisa Bonn Ishwardas, Art Educator With a BA in Fine Art and Master’s Degree in Art Therapy, Lisa Bonn Ishwardas believes everyone is an artist. Having worked in the Expressive Arts for over 20 years and a practicing artist herself, she is especially interested in helping others come to new understandings through their interactions with various media. Do It! Grab your camera as we head out for a week of “behind the scene” tours of some fabulous destinations in Western New York. Excursions may include a tour of a television studio to see how news is produced, an opportunity to learn the basics of golf, an in-depth look at the wonderful world of ice cream and a look inside the attic of the Buffalo Museum of Science. Itinerary is subject to change. Maximum enrollment is 13 girls. July 12-16, PM camp Instructor: Melanie Whitney ‘96, SHA Science teacher Service Camp Spend a week sharing your time and talents by volunteering at a variety of agencies throughout Western New York. Volunteer at a different service site daily and learn about each organization. This is a great opportunity to explore our gifts and talents and to give back and make a difference in the community. Some possible service sites include: Canine Helpers for the Handicapped, Rainbow K School, American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, and Weinberg Campus. Maximum enrollment is 13 girls. Camp is open to girls entering grades 6-8 and to incoming Sacred Heart freshwomen. July 19-23, AM camp Instructor: Ruth Donner, SHA campus minister Volleyball CSI at SHA Experience a behind the scenes look at crime scenes and forensic science. You will be provided with the opportunity to use deductive reasoning and scientific skills to uncover and explore the mystery of unsolved crimes using current forensic techniques. Topics include crime scene investigation, blood analysis, analysis of hair and fibers, fingerprinting and DNA analysis. July 12-16, PM camp Instructor: Robyn Brewer, SHA Science teacher Fit Camp cial Foods and has worked as a caterer and private cook. Ms Callahan is a Yoga and Pilates Instructor and teaches at several studios in the Buffalo area. Ms. Ziarnowski is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Physical Education at Canisius College. { week four } July 19-23 This weeklong camp will help you develop the skills for lifelong health and fitness with an emphasis on healthy body image and acceptance of different body types. Each day you will sample different kinds of exercise which could include stability balls, pilates, jump ropes, and pedometers; learn how to make a nutritious snack or meal; and gain a better understanding of food applications (ie, reading labels, the food pyramid). In addition, there will be a day each of yoga and self-defense. Maximum enrollment is 15 students. July 19-23, AM camp Instructors: Andrea Mott-Hollamby, Personal Trainer; Liz Ziarnowski (self-defense), Megan Callahan (yoga) Ms. Mott-Hollamby has a BS in Community Health Education from SUNY Brockport. She is certified in nautilus, stability ball, pilates, cycling and personal training and has operated her own fitness studio for the past four years. She also has a degree in Commer- Both beginning and intermediate players are welcome. Beginning players will learn the basics of volleyball including passing, setting, hitting and serving, and an introduction to team play. Experienced players will further develop team skills with the volleyball player who has already mastered the basics. In addition, we will teach offensive and defensive tactics through drills and scrimmages. July 19-23, AM camp Coaches: Mr. Chris Jank, SHA Varsity volleyball coach and Mr. Ron Stepien, SHA JV and Varsity assistant volleyball coach Digital Art Explore your creative side through digital art and photography. You will learn the basics of digital photography and use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate digital photos and to create multilayered art projects. We will then use your digital art to create unique projects you can take home such as a t-shirt, sling backpack, and mousepad. July 19-23, PM camp Instructor: Ruth Donner, SHA campus minister & former yearbook advisor continued on next panel Interested in bringing out the actor in you? This camp will cover all the basics of drama including writing for the stage and performance, and stage management. Daily exercises include warm-ups and acting activities designed to improve skills. During the week you will write skits, rehearse, organize costumes and props and then perform! Families are welcome to the final performance. July 26 –30, PM camp Instructor: Karen Szalach, SHA English teacher and director of SHA’s dramas. Mrs. Szalach is an actress and singer who performs locally, most recently with Kaleidiscope Theatre, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Lancaster Opera House. >> All camps take place at Sacred Heart Academy, except otherwise noted. Learn strategies for test taking along with review in each section. Girls will take a practice exam on the final day. Learn and practice basic to intermediate stick skills including cradling, passing, catching, and shooting drills. In addition, you will learn offensive and defensive techniques and engage in daily scrimmages.
