I’m delighted that after a huge amount of
work with our neighbouring councils, local
businesses, the Local Enterprise Partnership
and national government; we’ve been given
the government go-ahead for a ‘City Deal’. We
have won the support and resources to build on
our city regions strengths through the Greater
Brighton City Deal, bringing in over £170m of investment and
8,500 jobs to the city region over the medium term
Jason Kitcat: [email protected] | Profile Photo: Steve George
Greater Brighton City Deal
The deal includes commitments
from a range of public and
private organisations to invest
in environmental, digital and
other business sectors while also
unlocking key development sites.
Our partners include the University
of Brighton and University of
Sussex, plus companies investing
in the area like EON, American
Express, Ricardo, and EDF.
The flagship development will
be a £24 million investment to
expand and upgrade one of the
core sites for the city’s tech cluster,
New England House. This alone
will create nearly 900 new jobs.
Other plans agreed are a regional
programme of business support, a
new Central Research Laboratory
at Preston Barracks; a ‘Digital
Exchange’ to provide ultrafast
broadband to small businesses at
affordable prices; plus clean and
environmental technology centres
at Newhaven and Shoreham, as
well as flood defence funding for
those sites.
We welcome the government’s
willingness to devolve powers
and funding to city regions. This
flexibility means we will now
see millions invested in green
technologies, the creative and
digital sector, and business support
4

for companies across the city
region, creating many thousands
of new decent local jobs.
The Greater Brighton City Deal
will mean working together for
our common interest as a region,
whilst still cherishing the unique
character of every member area.
Our residents and businesses
live and work across municipal
boundaries – so working with our
neighbours is essential to building
on the success we’ve had in recent
years, and to developing our
growing reputation as an economic
powerhouse.

The Great Escape
The great thing about living in the future is
that I get to be pumped about upcoming
stuff way ahead of anyone else. In terms of
quantum theory, that means I’m actually right
there doing whatever it is long before you
guys are aware it’s on. Actually, that’s total
codswallop: it’s just I’m proper excited for the month of May
and beyond here, guys. Lo, festival season is upon us…
Thurs 8th-Sat 10th May, Various Venues
The Brighton institution that is the
Great Escape Festival rolls back round
again (*punches the air*) for their
annual showcase of around 400
bands and artists. This is the city and
beyond’s chance to discover new music
and see some brand new favourites
too. With wristbands selling fast,
attendance to this famously multivenue festival isn’t up for discussion.

The Lady Boys of Bangkok
Bo Ningen
Fri 2nd - Sat 31st May, Sabai Pavilion
Thailand’s most sizzling cabaret
returns to Brighton as a prime feature
of the city’s Fringe Festival. With
their new show, Red Hot Kisses even
raunchier and high kicking as ever,
Bangkok’s infamous and intriguing
lady boys are set to set Brighton
alight. Again. As ever, the temporary
Sabai Pavilion hosts this glittering
show. Ostrich feathers at the ready…

Sun 18th May, The Haunt
The exceptionally loud, heavy
and hairy London-based Japanese
fourpiece, Bo Ningen, return to
Brighton following a couple of shows
in our lovely city last year. They’re
really not for everyone (I’ve know of
people vomiting for bass lines and
volume), but they are exceptional. If
acid punk is what your street’s made
of, then of course; these guys are
right up it. thehauntbrighton.co.uk
Mac DeMarco
Brighton Festival
Monday 19th May, The Old Market
When the then 21-year old DeMarco
released his debut Rock and Roll
Night Club a short while ago in the
Spring of 2012, it was accompanied
by a barrage of bizarrely funny
promo videos, wildly unhinged live
performances and a not-so-subtle
range of promo photos. Now the
Mac is back with his first proper full
length, Mac DeMarco 2. A must.

Sat 3rd - Sun 25th May, Various Venues
May is without doubt the month
Brighton gets celebrating art, culture,
people and the general creative
heartbeat. Kicking off the knees up is
the city’s Brighton Festival, splayed
across various venues citywide. In its
48th year, 2014’s festival is directed
by choreographer Hofesh Schechter;
expect a bevvy of entertainment
spanning contemporary and classical
dance, debate, theatre, music, art,
film and more. brightonfestival.org

biggest worldwide, celebrating all

which means there’s plenty of time
to make sure you catch as much of
the programme up as possible. Take

Buddy
So spring is actually here and hopefully the
flooding is plugged until autumn. Finally!
April is the month of the Brighton Marathon,
so expect a flood of tourists though, after
just watching all that running I’m usually
famished, so luckily the spring food festival is
this month too! Running sweaty along the beach or sitting
on the beach taste testing chocolate and wine? Do I even
need to ask?
Mon 14th-Sat 19th, Theatre Royal
The world’s most successful rock and
roll show of all time, having been
seen by over 22 million people, is
coming to Brighton this April to tell
Buddy Holly’s story. In its 25th year,
the multi-award winning West End
show is still as explosive as ever, with
all the fan-favourite songs, energy
and drama that past audiences fell in
love with. atgtickets.com

Miranda Hart:
My What I Call, Live Show
Thurs 17th-Sat 26th, The Old Market
This solo performance piece asks
“what would happen if the rules of
gravity were to change?” What results
is mind-bending acrobatics that distort
perceptions of reality through the
physical performance mixing with
high tech video projection, creating
moments of awe. It’s been played in
New York, Moscow and Hong Kong with
critical acclaim, and is ideal for both
adults and children. theoldmarket.com
Tue 1st & Wed 2nd, Brighton Centre
After having earned four BAFTA
nominations, and won three Comedy
awards for her hit BBC series, Miranda
Hart is now taking to the stand-up
stage once again for the first time
since before ‘Miranda’ originally aired.
Expect a mixture of songs, dance,
and obviously silliness. Come and
see why she has proved so popular!

As part of the Nightingale Theatre’s

Dobrowolski is returning to the stage to
tell another investing, intellectual and

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE
LISTINGS:
The summer blockbuster season may well be
fast approaching but, as well as the mega
budget Hollywood fare, look out for some
interesting films from around the globe this
summer. Australia delivers a modern day
western ‘Mystery Road’ while ‘Pelo Malo
(Bad Hair)’ is a coming of age tale from Venezuela and the
dark comedy, ‘Of Horses and Men’ arrives from Iceland so
why not broaden your horizons this year.
The Last Days on Mars
Martin Lampitt: [email protected]
so take from that what you will.
Divergent
11th, In Cinemas
A group of astronauts collecting
samples on Mars are unaware of
a terrifying force that picks them
off one by one. Liev Schreiber, Elias
Koteas and Olivia Williams star in
this horror that seems like a cross
between ‘Event Horizon’ and found
footage snoozefest ‘Apollo 18’. One of
the writers has written for ‘The Bill’
The Raid 2
4th, In Cinemas
Based on the best seller by Veronica
Roth and set in a world divided
by factions based on virtues, Tris
(Shailene Woodley) learns that
she is Divergent and doesn’t fit in.
Upon discovering a plot to destroy
Divergents she joins the mysterious
Four (Theo James) to discover what
makes them so dangerous. Directed by
Neil (‘Limitless’) Burger and starring
Kate Winslet this could be a surprise.
11th, In Cinemas
2011’s brutal and ultraviolent high
octane action thriller ‘The Raid’
featured some of the most intricate
and balletic martial arts scenes I
have ever witnessed but the biggest
surprise was that the man responsible
was Welsh director/writer Gareth
Evans. He returns to helm alongside
Iko Uwais as Rama in what looks to be
just as bloody and jaw dropping a film
as the original.
Noah
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
4th, In Cinemas
Director Darren Aronofsky is known for
thought provoking fare from ‘Pi’ and
‘Requiem For A Dream’ to the award
winning ‘Black Swan’ and ‘The Wrestler’
so a biblical epic starring Russell Crowe,
Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins
seems an intriguing choice. Given the
recent apocalyptic weather that we
have experienced it will be interesting
to see how this is received in a still
waterlogged Great Britain.
Rio 2
4th, In Cinemas
As the Easter Holidays approach,
chances are you’ll be after something
to keep the kids quiet for an
afternoon so look no further than
this animated sequel. With an all
star but extremely bizarre voice cast
that includes Anne Hathaway, Jesse
Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx, Andy Garcia,
Bruno Mars, Will I Am and Janelle
Monae this should keep fans of the
2011 original more than happy.

I was far more convinced with
Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Peter
Parker than Tobey McGuire’s but
thought that the choice of villain in
the first film, although interesting, did
not totally work. This time there’s two
heavyweight thesps in the shape of
Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti facing
off against the wall crawler. Let’s
hope too many villains don’t spoil the
broth again.
COMPETITION
To celebrate the release of ‘Divergent’
in cinemas (4th) we have three
goodie bags to give away courtesy of
Entertainment One UK. To be in with
a chance of winning just answer this
simple question:
Who wrote the series of ‘Divergent’
novels that the film is based on?
Send your answer by 1st May 2014 to

Sun filtering through light clouds, chocolate,
flower strewn dresses, bright coloured t-shirts,
coffee outside and my granddaughter’s
birthday are the things that mean April to me.
I find it joyfull and I swear that more people
are smiling or is that because I’m smiling? Our
children will run around ‘whooping’ with delight and my
little one constantly jumps higher and ever higher on her
mini, as she calls it, “tampoleen”.

Brighton’s restaurant scene is a sea of
constant change and we try to reflect that in
the What’s On Guide. So of course we had to
make sure that we told you about the new
Mexican. This time of year is perfect to launch
new restaurants particularly if they have an
outside space in which to dine. Below are a mixture of

The Mash Tun
Spring is here! The halogen heaters are having
a rest, the Pimms might have even been
dusted off already, and a fair few people are
running round Brighton to celebrate, and raise
funds for some needy causes. If you’re like me
and prefer your jogging in the form of your
memory the next day, follow this central route of stellar
places to relax, drink and cheer on the pavement pounders!
1 Church Street, 01273 684951
Spilt out into the pedestrianized
zone by the pavilion and theatres,
this springy sun trap is perfect to
watch the world and the marathon
runners go by. On sunny days of yore
I would spend all weekend camped
out here, as it’s compromised by a
popular thoroughfare tables can be
scarce. Impressive burger platters are
served here for a reasonable price.

The Druids Arms
The Park View
79-81 Ditchling Road, 01273 680596
Situated on the loop back round
the level; value for money, warm
atmosphere and a central location
tick all the boxes for me. After
a bit of a renovation, this long
term establishment has a lease of
new life with a clean, bright and
spacious interior. An ever evolving
beverage selection ensures there’ll
be something new and some firm old
favourites. druidspub.com
71 Preston Drove, 01273 541663
Kicking off our route and kicking
back, a large south facing, front of
house beer garden soaks up those
bone stirring spring rays. A hub for
the Preston Park area locals, The
Park View always has a bustling
atmosphere, sunny vibes and
flowing drinks! It’s large enough to
accommodate groups and also nicely
shaped and cosy for a more intimate
venue. theparkviewbrighton.co.uk

The Open House
The Royal Oak
146 Springfield Road,01273 880102
As the steely thighs make their way
up London Road, why not jog up
by the station and refresh yourself.
Another (fairly recently renovated)
large garden area catches all the
rays, and has lots of heated wooden
booths... Just in case! A favourite
for a long time, The Open House,
as the name suggests, a relaxed,
homely vibe, a Brighton staple.
drinkinbrighton.co.uk/open-house
46 St James Street, 01273 621093
As another twigged namesake
once remarked - “If I only could, I’d
be running up that hill” – luckily all
that thirsty work will be rewarded
up St. James’ Street at The Royal Oak.
This slender locale has two large
rooms adorned with colourful jazz
and soul posters. They carry among
them Timmy Taylor’s Landlord and
Longman; perfect sumptuous spring
time tipples!
The Great Eastern
Pub Du Vin
103 Trafalgar Street, 1273 685681
Tiring isn’t it?! As we head into town,
the urban watering hole territory
brings us to this slightly subterranean
wooden dugout. A traditional Inn
with an Americana edge, book lined
shelves replace the all too familiar
flat screen plasmas. This cosy
little hideaway hosts a plethora of
bourbon and whisky behind the bar,
be warned, making a choice can be
difficult!
7 Ship Street, 01273 718588
Situated near the finish line at the
median of the sea-front, this classy
joint is a boutique and decidedly
European take on a British boozer.
You’d be forgiven for thinking there’s
not much beyond the exterior,
and granted, it’s very slight - but
the actual experience is defining.
Attention to detail, extensive wine
list and great food make it a treat.

Ed Motta
Joanne Joanne
Wed 9th, Brighton Dome
The big bearded Brazilian soul god is
playing Brighton Dome, luckily for us!
With a voice so captivating it drops
jaws, and with an incredible ear for
writing and playing both emotionally
and kinetically moving music, Ed
Motta really is an underrated genius
of our generation. Traversing genres
and styles effortlessly whilst always
remaining engaging and emotive, Ed
Motta is a must see. brightondome.org
Fri 25th, Prince Albert
All-female Duran Duran tribute hit
town with all those 80s hits, and for
added class Radio 4’s Lolo Wood is
one of their number! With support
from DJs ‘Chicks with Decks’ who says
women can’t rock hard? Whether for
the nostalgic anthem belting, some
ironic post-something hipstering
or just want to have a great night,
Joanne Joanne are definitely going to
deliver. Facebook: theprincealbert
Forest Swords
Fri 11th, Green Door Store
Rising star and Liverpudlian Matthew
Barnes, aka Forest Swords, plays
experimental hip-hop and dub tinged
with ambient, somewhere between
James Blake and local underground
label Donkey Punch’s outputs. After
the huge critical acclaim of his
debut, Engravings, Forest Swords
has been rising forcefully in music’s
consciousness, with his ability to
manifest huge emotions in brilliantly
inventive ways. Definitely not one
to miss. thegreendoorstore.co.uk

Manic Street Preachers
Crazy World of Arthur Brown
Wed 9th, Brighton Centre
Welsh alt-rockers Manic Street
Preachers formed in 1992 and they’ve
been releasing steadily since, with
last year’s ‘Rewind The Film’ being
critically acclaimed, with many
claiming it was their best work since
the early nineties. With another
album due this year, the band have
reached another peak, and now is a
better time as any to see the iconic
band in action. brightoncentre.co.uk
Sat 26th, The Haunt
This English psychedelic rock band
formed in 1967, before breaking up
3 years later and taking a 30-year
hiatus. In 2000 they reformed, and
they’ve been rocking ever since
with poppy, jazz fuelled psych-rock
mixing huge hooks with lucid music.
Frontman Arthur Brown is known for
his eccentric performances, so expect
an unforgettable show at the very
least. thehauntbrighton.co.uk
