Our Middle and High School students today celebrated Travel Green Friday. Students who travelled to school in a 'green' way, for example, by walking, cycling, or car-sharing, received a ticket to win a prize related to the theme of the day. Students wore green outfits and paid a contribution of €2. All money raised will be going to the Italian branch of Friends of the Earth. Sports update Grades 5-9 have been continuing rugby lessons in P.E. this week after the success of last week's taster sessions kindly provided by coaches from Primavera Rugby Club. Our aim is to eventually produce some teams to play other international schools across the city. Grades 5, 6 and 7 are also continuing their lessons with members of the prestigious Lazio Hockey Club and plans are under way to have some friendly matches between teams from RIS and Lazio in October and a tournament in December. There is a strong level of interest in hockey among our students and we look forward to more competitive fixtures over the coming year. Our friends at St George's International School have invited us to a number of football events at La Storta over the next year and we look forward to fielding teams there and in other tournaments around the international school circuit. Finally, a reminder for Grades 6 - 9, there will be after-school football starting next Thursday at 16.00 in the Basketball court and after last yearʼs enthusiasm during tournaments and friendly matches we look forward to welcoming as many students as possible. RIS creative writing club returns this year with a new leader! Ms Rough will be taking over the creative writers from Ms Bird who left the school in July. The club meets every Monday lunchtime in B3. The club allows members to create writing tasks, share their writing and offer and receive feedback on their efforts. The club has its own blog and even had their work published in an anthology last year! The club would love to have new members and all Middle School students are welcome! Curriculum Fair On Tuesday 11 September the Middle School held its first information and curriculum fair. This was an opportunity for parents of Middle School to meet all the teachers for this year and to talk to the new subject coordinators. Each department was represented and shared details of curriculum and resources. It was a very busy atmosphere and well attended. We would like to thank all the parents who came along and we hope to host more events like this during the year. Academic merit Rome International School is always keen to encourage, support and reward students who show motivation and commitment towards their learning and towards their school experience. In June we announced the winners of our Academic Excellence Award and our Learner Profile Award. At the end of term we also gave out certificates to students who had performed particularly well in specific subject areas across the school. Giving such awards is a way of celebrating student success and encouraging others to strive for the highest levels they are capable of. At the start of this new academic year we are pleased to be able to announce further recognition of academic achievement through our ʻAcademic Merit Awardsʼ. These awards are given to students who have performed at a very high level across a wide range of subjects during the preceding year. The awards only apply to students from grades 7 to 11 in the 2011/2012 academic year. The recipients of these awards will receive recognition within our school community and the families will also receive a discount in fees for the academic year. These awards are further evidence of Rome International Schoolʼs ongoing commitment to academic excellence and we would like say congratulations to all the students who performed so impressively last year. Parents will be informed individually of any awards directly by letter and the number of total merit awards will be announced in next week's newsletter along with the selection criteria. Page 4 visit Middle & High School Extended essay A reminder to Grade 13 students: the first draft of your extended essay is due on Friday 28 September. Individual Uni meetings All Grade 13 students should have now been given an individual meeting time with Mrs Tabet to confirm their university plans and receive feedback on the first draft of their personal statement (for UK applications) or 'essay' (for US and Canadian applications). It is crucial that all students come to these meetings on time and well prepared. Grade 13 Uni presentation On Tuesday 25 October Mr Fakih from Sciences Po (Paris) will be introducing this university to our Grade 13 students. Mr Fakih's presentation will take place at 13.50 in room B1. Grade 13 SATs A reminder to all our Grade 13 families that students who wish to apply to American universities will be required to take the SAT (college admission test) between October and December, unless they have already taken it in the spring. SAT sessions take place on Saturdays; the next available days are 3 November (registration deadline: 4 October) and 1 December (registration deadline: 1 November). Students must register online at http:// sat.collegeboard.org. During the registration process they will be assigned to an exam centre in Rome. Students may practice online before taking the test. The college board website also offers free electronic practice tools, and we have ordered more practice resources (books and CDs) for our library. Please note: students applying to any other country or university system do not need to take the SAT. Grade 13 class meeting On Tuesday 2 October we will hold our Grade 13 class meeting. The meeting will take place in room B3 (4th floor) at 16.20. This meeting will be an opportunity to discuss DP deadlines for this year with our students and families, clarify expectations for the current academic year, and keep you up to date with the University application process.
