Elitlopp Winner Magic Tonight Looks For Better
Performance at Vernon
By Bill Finley
Hambletonian Day was a day of surprises for Swedish
trainer Roger W almann. He thought he could win the
Cashman Memorial
with Magic Tonight
and thought D'One
was up against it in the
Fresh Yankee. He left
that afternoon with a
win, but not the one he
expected. Magic
Tonight, the Elitlopp
winner, was dull in the
Magic Tonight Will Look to Rebound
Cashman and finished
Tonight at Vernon Downs
eleventh. One race
later, stablemate D'One was brilliant in the Fresh Yankee,
mowing down former Horse of the Year Bee A Magician to
win by a length.
Both will be back at Vernon Downs tonight. D'One, the
mare, will take on Bee A Magician and seven others in the
$177,000 Muscle Hill and Magic Tonight will try again
against older male trotters in the $200,000 Crawford
Farms. The card also includes the Artiscape for older
female pacers.
As he is the star of the W almann Stable and the winner of
one of the most prestigious events in the world, the focus
remains on Magic Tonight. Can he rebound from his off day
in the Cashman, which was his first race since the Elitlopp?
Walmann believes he will be better than he was at the
Meadowlands, but remains a bit worried. He revealed to
HRU yesterday that Magic Tonight came out of the
Cashman with a blood count that was less than satisfactory
and a throat problem and it remains to be seen if he'll be
ready tonight for his very best.
"W e had a little problem with his blood and a little
problem with his
throat," W almann
said. "It was not
very much but
enough to take him
down a little bit. I
hope it is better this
time. W e may not
have had enough
time to get him
perfect and he may
not be 100 percent
for this race. But he
was in very good
shape before the
problem with his
throat and blood and he should race good, but maybe he's
not yet at top."
W ith division leader JL Cruze ineligible for this race and
slated to go instead a night later at Pocono, the horse to
beat in the Crawford Farms will be Flanagan Memory. A
blue-collar sort who won only two of 19 starts last year, he
has come into his own of late for trainer Rene Dion and has
won two straight, including the Cashman. Brian Sears will
drive. Every starter but one, the longshot Rossini, is coming
out of the Cashman.
Though Magic Tonight failed to get the job done in the
the Cashman, W almann and driver Örjan Kihlström didn't
come away from the Meadowlands empty-handed that
afternoon as D'One turned in a stellar effort to beat Bee A
magician and Shake It Cerry, both Dan Patch Award
winners.
"You never know with horses," Kihlström said when
asked about the irony of winning with the horse he thought
was his second best shot. "I'm too old to get surprised
when they race good or don't race good. You never know.
That's way it is with racing, W e just hope Magic Tonight is
better now."

Despite the win with D'One, Kihlström is taking nothing
for granted.
"I am not confident at all, but I have my hopes," he said.
"I just hope she is as good as last time and gets a good
trip. W e'll see what we can do. There are good horses
against her and we need some racing luck."
W almann had said prior to the Cashman/Fresh Yankee
that of his two horses Magic Tonight was training the best,
so he chalked the Fresh Yankee win up to a pleasant
surprise.
"She can beat (Bee A Magician) again, but we must have
some luck in the race," the trainer said "Last time, there
were two very fast first quarters. If you have three four
lengths to make up on Bee A Magician and she doesn't
race too fast early it will be very difficult to catch her."
Though beaten last time out, Bee A Magician will likely go
off as the favorite based on her reputation and near perfect
record this year.
In the Artiscape, the rugged mare Anndrovette looks to
be on top of her game and looms the one to beat. It's worth
noting that driver Doug McNair has chosen to drive Lady
Shadow for trainer Ronald Adams over Precocious Beauty,
who is trained by his father Gregg.

The Norway native is a new face in the Thoroughbred
industry, but has already found success at Saratoga thanks
to Pagan, a debut winner Monday who is one of
Smedshammer's first Thoroughbred purchases.
Smedshammer bought Pagan along with another juvenile
colt by freshman sire Girolamo, who is now named
Charming Indy, at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New
York-bred sale for $40,000 each. Both are trained by
Dominick Schettino.
"I have been wanting to get into Thoroughbreds for a
while," Smedshammer said. "Last year I finally went to the
Saratoga yearling sale and bought these two yearlings. I
brought them home and broke them and trained them all
the way until June. I trained them at W hite Birch and sent
them to Dominick [Schettino] right after the [GI] Belmont S.
[June 6]. He finished them off, getting them used to the
starting gate and getting a few fast works over a bigger
track."
Despite his lack of experience with Thoroughbreds,
Smedshammer knows plenty about equine conformation
and picked out both horses himself at the sale.
"I kind of had an idea of what I wanted the horses to look
like," he commented. "I have been to enough
Thoroughbred races to tell the difference between an
average Thoroughbred and a good Thoroughbred. I know
what they are supposed to look like, at least in my mind. I
asked a lot of people as far as the pedigrees and stuff
because obviously I don't know anything about that."
The fact that the New York-bred duo were by a first-crop
sire is part of what attracted Smedshammer to them.
"I wasn't willing to spend a fortune on them and those
New York-bred sales prices can be very high if you buy
popular stallions," Smedshammer said. "I also wasn't
willing to give up too much on the conformation, so that's
why I went to a first-crop sire, which the Thoroughbred
people tend to shy away from. That is why I took a chance
on those two. I talked to a lot of people and they said
Girolamo did have a lot of speed himself. It looks like we
got lucky. There have been some other Girolamos that
have showed up also."
Smedshammer owns the
two juveniles in partnership
with W anda Polisseni's My
Purple Haze Stables and
Mike Parisi's Joemar
Racing Stables, who are
both also prominent
members of the harness
racing industry. Polisseni
also races Standardbreds

with her current stable star
being 3-year-old trotting
filly Barn Doll, who has been a force to be reckoned with in
the New York Sires Stakes series. Parisi is owner of W hite
Birch Farm in Allentown, N.J., an 800-acre Standardbred
breeding and training facility where Smedshammer's
operation is based.
"I wanted to get into it and Purple Haze is my primary
owner for Standarbreds and [Polisseni] is also a big
Thoroughbred owner, and Michael also owns
Thoroughbreds," Smedshammer remarked. "W hen I told
them I wanted to buy some Thoroughbred yearlings they
said, ‘Sure, we will go in with you.'"
Smedshammer continued, "This wasn't just for us to buy
to let somebody else train them. I wanted to mess around
with them myself and try to train some myself, which is why
I bought them. It's been a pleasant experience so far.
That's for sure. The horse won his first start, so that's great.
Maybe it's a little bit of beginner's luck."
Pagan and Charming Indy spent about 10 months at
Smedshammer's barn following their purchase at Saratoga.
Smedshammer did all of the early breaking and training on
the pair with the help of one of his Standardbred grooms
Megan Scran, a lifelong equestrian.
"Pagan took to training very easy, but Charming Indy was
smart and played some games with us," Scran said. "They
were saints from day one. Charming Indy was a natural at
everything. He had a lead change, had the heart to want to
run and he really enjoyed work. Pagan was a little lazier
and much easier on himself mentally and physically."
The 23-year-old added, "It was one of the most rewarding
feelings teaching them everything and then watching them
mature even more as they learned to be racehorses in
Dominick's barn. It was an incredible feeling seeing Pagan
win Monday."
Smedshammer was equally delighted and also quite
surprised by Pagan's debut win.

"I was quite shocked actually," he remarked. "I really
didn't know what to expect for the first start. Dominick put
him on the turf because of his pedigree and stuff. It was a
really big thrill to watch, that's for sure."
The New Jersey resident added, "I was [at Saratoga]
Sunday for the sale again and I bought a couple of new
ones, but I didn't stay over for the race. I had to come home
because I was going to Yonkers [Monday], so I watched it
from home. [Pagan] is not the better of the two. [Charming
Indy] has always been quite a bit better. He was supposed
to race [W ednesday], but he is not going to race. He is
starting to have a little problem with his shins, so we don't
want to race him yet."
Smedshammer's two new purchases are also by
freshman sires. He went to $25,000 for Hip 461, a colt by
undefeated 2012 GIII Holy Bull S. hero Algorithms, and
$20,000 for Hip 517, a son of three-time graded stakes
winner Rule.
"I'll break them right away," the 48-year-old said. "They
are at W hite Birch already. I'll do what we did last year. W e
worked them quite hard in the fall last year up until
Christmas and then I turned them out for the winter when
the weather was cold and the ground was hard, but I had
galloped them quite a bit up until Christmas. They had
already gone some quick quarters up until Christmas. W e
will do the same thing with these two if they look like they
have any ability."
W hile Smedshammer is enjoying his foray into
Thoroughbred racing, the Standardbred trainer will keep his
Thoroughbred string small for now.
"This is almost like a hobby right now, so we will see how
it develops," he concluded. "It's for fun and keeps me a little
bit interested in something else. W hen you get older, the
Standardbreds are a lot of wear and tear on you, sitting in
the bike, racing and driving. Being a Thoroughbred trainer
is certainly a lot easier when you sit on the side and watch.
It is not as physically demanding."
JK She'salady About Three Weeks Away From
Qualifier, Eyeing Red Mile Meet
By Bill Finley
It's been a tough year for JK She'slady, who is just 1 for 4
and hasn't raced since finishing fifth in the June 27 Lynch
Memorial at Pocono. But trainer Nancy Johansson remains
confident her star filly will still have a productive year.
Sidelined by lung problems that were likely responsible
for her poor performances this year, JK She'salady is about
three weeks away from a qualifier and Johansson said she
is hopeful to have the Art Major 3-year-old back for the
Grand Circuit Meet at the Red Mile.
"She's doing well," Johansson said. "She's trained about
four times since we had to treat her with the antibiotics.
She seems to be herself again. But we won't know until
we're at the point where we're going in 50 with her. There's
a big difference between going in 2:15 and 1:50. But she
seems a lot more like her old self; she's more alert and
happier. Everything is heading in the right direction."
Johansson said that following the Lynch it was
discovered that her filly was suffering from lung problems.
"She had an irregularity in her lungs," she said. "W e put
her on two different types of antibiotics and then when they
put her on the treadmill her
oxygen levels decreased,
so at the end of her miles
she wasn't getting enough
oxygen. There was
something in her lungs
causing this, an infection of
some sort."
The irony is that JK
JK She’salady could be back by She'salady has been
the Red Mile meet
suffering from a similar
problem that ended the
racing career of Father Patrick. Father Patrick is trained by
Johansson's father, Jimmy Takter.
"There are plenty of big races left for her," Johansson
said. "It's a different situation compared to Father Patrick.
He has a lot of value as a stallion and that's something you
have to keep in mind with him. She'll be a broodmare for
the Three Brothers Stable when we retire her, so I had a
little bit more flexibility. If we can’t get her together in time
to have her race at high level by the end of this year they're
not against bringing her back next year at four."
One David, Five Goliaths in Moni Maker
Say this for trainer Mickey Peterson, he's not afraid of a
challenge.
Tonight's $174,000 Moni
Maker at The Meadows is
emblematic of the current
situation in harness racing
where two stables
dominate and it's a long,
Sistas will have her work cut out long way back to whoever
is No. 3. There are six
for her in the Moni Maker
horses in the Moni Maker
and five of them are trained
by either Ron Burke (three starters) or Jimmy Takter (two
starters).
Then there's Mickey Peterson, who will carry the hopes of
every trainer who has grown tired of getting crushed by the
Burke and Takter monsters. He'll send out the Andover Hall
filly Sistas. The good news is that she's riding a four-race
winning streak. The bad news is that she has been racing
at a much easier level than the Burke and Takter horses,
particularly Mission Brief and Wild Honey.
"It's going to be a big job," Peterson said. "She's
probably a class, maybe two classes, below the level of
competition in there but she's been racing very well and
she deserves a chance to race against these horses and
see if she can take the next step up. The owners (Albert
and Michelle Crawford) felt they wanted to see her have a
chance against a little better class of horses."
Though there's just six horses in the field it couldn't be a
harder sport for Sistas. Burke's Mission Brief is coming off
a second-place finish in the Hambletonian and Takter's
W ild Honey just won the Hambletonian Oaks.
"There's no question it would be a huge thrill to beat

those guys," Peterson said. "Just to be in the race against
those guys and those two horses is a great privilege. I'm
not thinking about beating them. I just hope I'm reasonably
competitive against them and we put on a good show and
she races well for the owner."
Burke will also start I'm So Fancy and Gatka Hanover.
Takter's other start is Smexi.

Burke Sweeps Pass Splits at Harrah's
Philadelphia
By Mike Bozich for Harrah's Philadelphia
CHESTER, PA - There were three divisions of

each going for a purse of just over $81,000 each.
Big Top
Hanover won
the fastest
PASS split with
a 1:52.4 score
for driver Brett

trainer Ron
Burke.
In the first
Big Top Hanover - Photo by World Wide Racing division, it was
Jt45 and Burke
Racing's Big Top Hanover (Brett Miller) springing the upset.
The son of W estern Ideal - Blind Ambition latched onto live
cover at the half, and was able to out-close leader Ideal
Jimmy (Marcus Miller) to pick up the win. Heavy favorite
Spider Man Hanover dropped back sharply through the
field and was distanced in the end.
It was the first career win for the Ron Burke trainee, who
completed the mile in 1:52.4. He paid $69.20 to win.
In division two, another Ron Burke charge, Check Six
(Yannick Gingras), was victorious. The son of
Somebeachsomewhere - Southwind Vanna showed tactical
speed from post 7, putting him in position for a quarter
brush, which he utilized just after the quarter. He led the
rest of the way, winning by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:53. I'm Some
Graduate (Tim Tetrick) closed sharply to be second while
Allie's Cruiser (Matt Kakaley) closed up the inside for third.
It was the fourth straight victory for Check Six, who
returned $5.00. He is owned by Weaver Bruscemi, Burke
Racing, Bill Switala, and James Martin.
Division three completed the Ron Burke sweep as JK Will
Power took advantage of a perfect trip to win. The son of
Somebeachsomewhere - W hats New Pussycat prevailed in
a stretch duel over another Burke trainee, Manhattan
Beach (Yannick Gingras), to prevail in 1:53.1. JJ Flynn
(Brett Miller) finished third.
It was the second career win for JK W ill Power, who is
owned by 3 Brothers Stables. He paid $5.00.

As Geldings, Big Names Likely to Have Staying
Power
W hat's bad news for breeding farms is good news for
harness racing.
It's at this time of the year that breeding farms are
searching the stakes scene for suitable stallion candidates.
This season the search is not likely to be very rewarding.
The stars of 2015 are dominated by geldings and females
with only a scant selection of suitable entire males. W here
have all the stallion prospects gone?
That's good for harness racing as the sport benefits when
established stars campaign over many years. Think about
the indefatigable Foiled Again and the people who have
come to North American tracks to see the richest
Standardbred ever.
Hambletonian winner Pinkman and Meadowlands Pace
champ W iggle It Jiggleit,
both geldings, are likely to
be drawing cards wherever
they race over the next few
seasons. Ditto for soph
sensation W akizashi
Hanover and aged trotting
As a gelding, JL Cruze is one of star JL Cruze. And then
many harness racing stars that there are the mares Mission
should be around for a while Brief and Bee A Magician.
The only entire male
among the top seven money-winners this season is
Domethatagain, the Rene Allard-trained pacer that recently
pushed his earnings past $1 million. But when
Domethatagain was racing at ages 2, 3, and 4 for trainer
Erv Miller, he was just a very good horse. He was not the
standout stakes star that breeding farms seek for the
breeding shed.
The fact is that with the rapid decline in harness racing in
the last decade, as evidenced by the downward spiral in
the size of foal crops, fewer stallions are needed. It's simply
a numbers game. W ith fewer breeders active in this era,
fewer stallions are needed.
Hanover Shoe Farms, a powerhouse in harness racing
for almost 90 years, plucked off an intriguing candidate in
Sebastian K, the world's fastest trotter for the mile. His
facile speed stunned horsemen last year; his outcross
pedigree offers appeal, too.
But in states such as Illinois and Michigan, it's not likely
many farms will be casting about for the lower-tier stallion
prospects. Racing has declined so rapidly in there that
pessimism has prompted an exodus of trainers while
owners and breeders simply slip quietly out of the
business.
The arrival of slots breathed life into Ohio racing and
many stallions have flocked there in search of opportunity.
Dozens of stallions have set up shop in the Buckeye State.
(continued on next page)
HarnessRacingUpdate.com
• 8/21/15 PAGE 7 of 17
Some will surely get the short end of the stick. It may be a
situation of Indiana redux: soon after slots arrived in the
Hoosier State, the joke was that there were more stallions
in Indiana than mares.
In such situations, those stallions with access to quality
mares in sufficient quantities are usually the ones that
move to the top. Many stallions lose out due to lack of
opportunity.
Some stallion owners may seek to have their stars burn
the candle at both ends: breed and race in the same
season. That was the 2015 plan for Father Patrick, the
dominant colt of his class in 2013-14. He bred mares early
in 2015 and then began his campaign with a smashing win
over Bee A Magician, but lung problems derailed his
season.
Some owners retire stallions dreaming of riches only to
realize that their stallion might be more profitable on the
track. For example, Archangel, a standout son of Credit
Winner, bred 43 mares in 2013 and now has 30 yearlings.
He was put back in training for the 2014 season and
dropped his record to 1:50 and added $234,393 to his
bankroll.
Both Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing share a
pattern: superior horses usually surface as 2-year-olds and
then often compete in the high-profile sophomore classics.
That is when they makes headlines and gain a following
among the public. All too often, however, the colts retire to
a lucrative stud career and never race beyond age three.
Just as the public is starting to become familiar with the
stars, they vanish from sight.
Imagine what would happen in the NBA is LeBron James
played two seasons and retired.
Imagine how much Thoroughbred tracks would love to
have American Pharoah race in 2016 as a 4-yar-old.
Keeping the stars of the sport on the track was the
purpose of the policy of Jeff Gural that became anathema
to some. Gural knew that harness racing could promote its
stars if they stayed on the track instead of going to stud.
With races that he controlled, Gural restricted the eligibility
of offspring of stallions retiring early.
Some owners and breeders denounced the rule and said
that Gural was effectively controlling a top horse's career.
Owners focused on their horse's value and their
investment. Gural focused on what is best for harness
racing as a whole.
Fortunately, the "Gural rule" does not apply to W iggle It
Jiggleit, Pinkman, W akazashi Hanover, and JL Cruze. W ith
luck, harness racing fans will be able to watch these stars
for many years to come.
Kudos to the Mission Brief Team
Sometimes you just gotta take the shot.

BEE A MAGICIAN looks to rebound from her defeat two
weeks ago in the Fresh Yankee at the Meadowlands, just
the second time she's lost all year. It took a record :25:2
opening quarter on Hambletonian day to sting her just
enough that she couldn't hang on late that day but she
shouldn't have to work as hard tonight; will control it from
the onset and use the post advantage on her new rival.
D'ONE was a 14/1 winner in this print upon her North
American debut last out and that was some sweep from the
Swedish champion; welcome to the US. Driver Kihlstrom
may elect to race her once again from behind but she
should be even tighter with that Meadowlands start under
her belt; tremendous rematch coming. SHAKE IT CERRY
closed bravely in the Fresh Yankee and there's no shame
in being a tick outkicked by #7 in that race. She hasn't
been able to yet replicate that mile four back against JL
Cruze but we all know her best puts her squarely in the
middle of this; should offer another decent price too. ALLIE
LABROOK had to go first over last out in her second start
East and didn't disgrace herself for Midwest connections;
she can a land a share of this with a smooth journey.
CLASSIC MARTINE was used hard in that fast opening
quarter last out and makes her fourth start for Elliott; seems
due for something more.

After beginning the season by winning just one time in
eleven starts, the amazing ANNDROVETTE has now won
two of her last three including big time wins in July with the
Golden Girls (at 36/1) and then most recently earlier this
month in the Lady Liberty. The 8-year-old is clearly back
and when she's on her game she outclasses almost any
other mare; bound to be showing early speed from the
outside for regular pilot Tetrick and looms the one to beat.
Entrymate VENUS DELIGHT had some belated pace to
offer in the Lady Liberty once free and Bartlett continues to
keep the drive on this one; deserves respect in her own
right. COLOR’S A VIRGIN makes her fourth start since the
switch to Dave Miller driving and that sweep from two back
was a real sparkler. The problem here is the post and it
would be tough to see her leaving with all the speed to her
inside; I'm guessing she'll have too much ground to make
up. SANDBETW EENURTOES is one that I've went to the
well on throughout this summer but I have to admit she's
come flat more often than not; maybe the change in
scenery will help. LADY SHADOW beat many of these
including ANNDROVETTE in the Roses Are Red back in
June. She's only raced one time since but her very best
would give her a shot; has won over half of her lifetime
starts. PRECOCIOUS BEAUTY doesn't leave Canada too
often and now picks up Sears; was best early in her career.

OBRIGADO didn't have the easiest trip when last seen in
the Cashman and now returns to the Empire state for New
York connections. He's been a bit of a tough horse to
figure at times as well as a tough luck one; 5-year-old by
the obscure Maine sire Boy Band can beat these at a price.
FLANAGAN MEMORY has now scored twice in a row at
double digit odds and he's able to retain new pilot Sears for
this one too. Both of his last wins came off golden trips but
you can't fault him for winning; in sharp form for trainer
Rene Dion. MARKET SHARE was hard used in the
Cashman but I'm not sold he can beat these anyway based
on the year he's having; I'm gladly swing against if the price
is short as expected. MAGIC TONIGHT was a
disappointment upon his return back to the States last out
although I never recalled him being a FFA type trotter even
when he was here; would need a complete turnaround to
now win. LINDY'S TRU GRIT and MASTER OF LAW
might take some action due to the coupled entry from
popular connections but both are likely aiming a bit high.
MELADY'S MONEY continues to race gamely despite the
long campaign; has earned my respect.
