FIVER CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION Become a Fiver Fan on Facebook fb.com/fiverchildrensfoundation annual report 2014 trustworthy creative self-confident respectful environmentalist team player courageous peacemaker learner compassionate community builder responsible Fiver Children’s Foundation 519 Eighth Avenue 24th Floor New York, NY 10018 212.971.9562 www.fiver.org 24 1 is made with LOVE. FIVER our mission The Fiver Children’s Foundation is a comprehensive youth development organization that makes a 10-year commitment to children from underserved communities throughout New York City and central New York. Through character-building summer and year-round out-of-school time programs, Fiver empowers children to make ethical and healthy decisions, to become engaged citizens, and to succeed in school, careers, and life. — ALIX, age 8 2 3 dear friends: our history and culture Fiver takes its name from Richard Adam’s celebrated work of fiction Watership Down. The novel focuses on the survival, leadership, and courage of a group of rabbits, led by the visionary rabbit Fiver, who set out to find a better way of life. Inspired by this story, Founder and Chairman of the Board Tom Tucker established the Foundation in 1998 to benefit children from disadvantaged circumstances. What began as a summer camp has evolved into a comprehensive, award-winning, youth development organization. It is no secret that countless children in the New York area face lives filled with upheaval and churn. At Fiver, we believe that there are no shortcuts to raising ethical, empowered young people, so we make a 10-year commitment to our youth, serving them from grade school to age 18 — providing stability and consistency through all the challenges in between. For the past fifteen years, we have developed and fine-tuned a unique and effective youth development model. We utilize the Camp Fiver experience as a catalyst for change that provides a fast-track to bonding for our youth and staff. We follow up camp with programs that are geared towards key leverage points in children’s lives: the entrance into middle school, high school, college, and careers. Our program focuses on intensity and utility of contact, making Fiver an efficient direct service model. Thank you for reading our highlights from 2014 and for supporting Fiver’s efforts to close the opportunity gap for our youth. /definitions/ FIVER noun; Shorthand for the organization’s full name, Fiver Children’s Foundation ]W e work at Fiver. While it was fortunate that no one was harmed, it was clear from an assessment of the damage that the restoration of Camp Fiver’s grounds would be a long and costly process. Although we are now faced with a long rebuilding process, we are reminded that even the worst storm clouds can have a silver lining. After the storm, the Fiver community banded together to get Camp Fiver up and running. The FIRST ALUMNI BOARD, which seats 7 members, was formed in 2014. The first board meeting was held on May 5, 2014. 16 Fiver introduced the FIRST ALUMNI INDUCTION CEREMONY for the Class of 2014. The ceremony was attended by Fiver alumni, staff, board members, families, current participants, and supporters. ALUMNI WEEK kicked off with the annual alumni reunion dinner, followed by a money management workshop and professional development networking opportunities. Fiver’s camp facilities had no power for three days following the storm, so nearby households generously lent us extra generators. Camp Fiver’s neighboring Colgate University, The Colgate Inn, and Michael’s Restaurant in Waterville each donated meals for kids and staff during this time. Others donated bottled water and stopped by to help clean up the grounds. Fiver’s 17 and 18 year old participants in the SERVE program were remarkably dedicated, volunteering to clean up debris, keeping a positive attitude, and setting an example for young Fivers. Overall, the Fiver community helped to raise over $109,000 towards restoring our camp facilities and supporting our year-round youth development programs. Fiver thanks all of the family members, friends, and community members who helped Camp Fiver recover from the storm! We are currently in the process of restoring our grounds and facilities, and look forward to welcoming campers, old and new, to Camp Fiver again this summer. 6 Fiver alumni joined the SUMMER 2014 CAMP FIVER TEAM. 17 the fiver family staff alumni board Christie Ko Andrew Creadore Mary Lee Dinski Jane Ledesma Executive Director Deputy Executive Director Alli James Program Supervisor Program Supervisor Ileana Vazquez Director of Development Operations and Accounting Rachel Sangalang Mark Petersen Development and Marketing Associate Glorivette Rodriguez Program Supervisor Carlito Atkins Facilities and Grounds Director Terry Yardley Upstate Program Supervisor Program Supervisor Jasmine Fernandez Chair young professionals committee Osama Aibangbee Christopher Osborne Akeem Brown Adrienne Faessler Christian Laureano-DeJesus John DiCerbo Vice-Chair Development Chair Treasurer Allessandra Mitchell Programming Chair Marlene Vasquez Communication Amber Del-Moral Secretary board of directors FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Neuberger Berman Thomas H.
