EAGLE MOUNTAIN-SAGINAW ISD HALL OF FAME
The Hall of Fame was first brought to my attention in the summer of 2009 by
Robert Walton and Paul Jacobs. We had several discussions about what it might
look like. As time went by the Hall of Fame idea would come up in conversation
from time to time. In the fall of 2011, I decided it was time to get the ball
rolling on this idea. I contacted Robert Walton and Paul Jacobs and told them
that it was time to start the hall of fame process. I asked them if they were
willing to help make this hall of fame idea a reality. They were both excited and
honored to help with this endeavor.
In November 2011, I put together a twenty member steering committee to
come up with the guidelines for the Hall of Fame. At the first meeting the
steering committee decided to call it the “Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD Athletic
Hall of Fame.” The first order of business was to develop a purpose. The
purpose is as follows:
The Eagle Mountain Saginaw Independent School District Athletic Hall
of Fame was established to recognize members of the Eagle Mountain
Saginaw Independent School District’s family who have distinguished
themselves as outstanding contributors to Eagle Mountain Saginaw
athletics, and possibly beyond, instilling a continuing commitment to and
the promotion of the beliefs that EMS-ISD values.
We met fifteen times over the next fourteen months. Over that period of time,
the steering committee came up with the ways to pick the selection committee,
the selection process, the voting process, guidelines for eligibility for the hall of
fame, and the nomination form.
There are twenty members that make up the official selection committee. After
several meetings, the committee decided to set September 15, 2012, as the
deadline for the first group of inductees into the Hall of Fame. Nine people
comprise the first class of inductees into the Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD
Athletic Hall of Fame. To commemorate this great honor, each inductee will
have a plaque displayed in the gym lobby of the high school where they made
their contributions. Congratulations to the Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD Athletic
Hall of Fame Class of 2013.

for a 25 game hitting streak and a batting average
of .521 and .904 slugging percentage and a .644 on
base percentage.

As a senior the 1997 Boswell Baseball Team won the
State Championship.

June 1997 selected to play in the Texas High School
All Star Game.
Drafted June 1997, by the Toronto Blue Jays as
a pitcher in the 46th round.
1997-1998 Navarro Junior College
LSU-full scholarship 1998-2000. Team won the
2000 College World Series. Brad was a Junior
during this time. He was Second Team AllAmerican and led the nation with 36 doubles.
2002-Carolina League Most Valuable Playerwinning the batting title .347-3rd. In league in
home runs (22) and second in RBI’s (97). This
earned him the Doug Million Award as the
Rockies Organizational Player of the Year.
Junior year—Scholastic All American
2004- was with Triple-A Colorado Springs and
hit for a .322 average with 31 home runs.
Called up to play in the Majors on April 30,
2004.
2000-Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the
11th. Round-outfielder
Went with his team to the World Series as the
National League Champions in 2007.
2000-in the Minor Leagues was chosen as a

in Clinical Laboratory Science. Corey played
offensive tackle at Bridgeport and was selected
as an All-State football player in 2008.
Son-Cody (20) is a sophomore at Tarleton State
University where he is majoring in Business-Finance. Cody was a QB and baseball player at
Bridgeport. In 2010, Cody was selected as an
All-State QB and as an All-State baseball player.

Max Newcom
Boswell High School
Coach, 1961 to 1967
Max G. Newcom, graduate of Baylor University
and of the master’s program at the University of
North Texas, came to W. E. Boswell High School
in 1961 from Gatesville High School where
he coached football, basketball and baseball.
When Boswell opened in 1961, he was the first
assistant coach in football and track and in this
role helped to build the first football field. He
was the first head basketball coach winning the
first district title in any sport for Boswell High
School. He had an article published in The Texas Coach on his use of the fastbreak in basketball. Due to the interest in baseball of the first
Boswell athletes, Coach Newcom began working on the baseball field and started the team as
its first coach. Continuing his interest in student
athletes, he organized the golf program and
was also its first coach. In addition, he taught
science, health and physical education. To bring
community support, he helped organize the first
booster club. Through the University of North
Texas and Texas Wesleyan University, many
coaches completed their student teaching under
Coach Newcom’s leadership.
After a back injury in 1968, he left coaching
and began his career at Tarrant County Junior
College as Assistant Director of Admissions,
then Registrar on the South Campus and later at
the new Northwest Campus. He was an active
member of the Texas Association of College
Registrars and Officers, TACRO, serving a
term as president of the region and receiving
the honor of a life membership from the State
organization. For his support of students and
student service organizations, he was named
an honorary member of the Phi Theta Kappa
Organization.
He has continued his support of Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District
serving on the Board of Education. In addition,
he has served as a member of Eagle Mountain
Saginaw Educational Foundation. Also, he has
participated in the New Teacher Mentoring
Program where he mentored a first year teacher
and coach, who happened to be the son of a
coach that had done his student teaching with
Coach Newcom, thus a third generation coaching sequence. In support of the Boswell basketball program, he has established a scholarship
for a senior basketball athlete, boy or girl, who
has shown not only talent but also outstanding
commitment to team and school.
After 37 years in education, four in professional
baseball and two in the US army during the
Korean War, Coach Newcom is enjoying his
retirement and his family, wife Mollie, children,
Steven and wife Joy Newcom, Nancy and
husband Walt Marston, Melinda and husband
Steve Smith, eight grandchildren, three great
grandchildren, and with friends.

1971, gaining 1,115 yards rushing, scoring 15
touchdowns and kicking six extra points

John Shanor graduated in 1972 with some
individual football achievements. He was
All-District fullback and linebacker for two
years; and All-State Linebacker for one
year. John received a full scholarship to
play football at Tyler Junior College. After
one semester at Tyler he left to attend the
Spartain School of Aeronautics and attained
his FAA Airframe and Power Plant (A&P)
mechanics license.
This led to his thirteen year stay in Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia as an aircraft mechanic with
Saudi Airlines. While in Saudi, his first child
was born and he enjoyed diving in the Red
Sea and traveling to many foreign places
with his family.
John raised three children; his daughter is
a Pediatrician and resides in Colorado, his
older son, a Captain in the US Army, served
for seven years and now resides in Texas. His
younger son, Captain, is currently serving
in the US Air Force as a pilot of the AWACS
E-3 and is stationed in Oklahoma. He has
nine grandchildren with another on the way.
John has enjoyed hiking the 14,000 plus
Peaks of Colorado the past several years
and cycling is his latest passion. With
several dozen 100 K rides completed, his
current goal is to accomplish a 100 mile
ride this year.
John returned to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1990
and was self - employed for two years in
the Concrete Pumping Business. Then he
accepted an employment offer from UPS
in the airline division and moved his family
to Kentucky. He has been with UPS for
22 years and currently works at their DFW
location.

work with the Angela Stanford Foundation. The award recognizes exceptional contributions to
charity organizations or community programs.
Growing up in Texas, Angela began collecting
golf accolades early, winning the Fort Worth
Girls Championship four times, the 1996 Texas
State 4A High School Championship and the
1996 PING Texas State Junior Championship.
1997 WAC Freshman of the Year and 1999 WAC
Player of the Year. Stanford was a member of
the 2000 U.S. Curtis Cup Team, a semifinalist at
the British Amateur Championship and winner of
the 2000 WAC Championship.
While at Texas Christian University, Stanford won
nine collegiate tournaments, was a four-time
All-American and a four-time All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) selection. She was named

Won 10 of a possible 12 letters in football, basketball
and track.
•
Sat out most of football season his senior year with a
broken collarbone sustained in the first game of the
season against Azle High School.
•
Was All-district center on Boswell’s district championship basketball team in 1964.
•
Won five gold medals in the district 1A-12 track meet
held at Boswell in 1964 (Medals in 220 yd. dash, 440
yd. dash, sprint relay, mile relay and the long jump)
•
Qualified for the state meet in the mile relay, broad
jump and twice in the 440 yd. dash. At the state
meet in 1964, set a new record for class 1A schools in
the 440 yd. dash at 49.2 seconds. Placed third in the
mile relay and the broad jump. Total individual points
were 19, team points were 28, and Boswell placed
third in class 1A schools in the meet.
•
Received an athletic scholarship to Rice University for track and field.
•
Ran on the freshman and the varsity mile relay teams. In 1966, the Rice varsity mile relay team
won and set records at the Texas Relays, the Kansas relays, and the Southwest Conference meet.
•
The Rice track team was invited to a dual meet with the Mexican National Team in Mexico City to
help them prepare for the 1968 Olympics which were held in Mexico City.
•
At Kansas, and again at the Coliseum Relays, a post season invitational meet in Los Angeles,
the team posted a time of 3:07.4, which was then the fastest mile relay time ever recorded by a
collegiate team from Texas.
Robert C. (“Bob”) Thompson grew up in what
was then a tiny roadside hamlet, Saginaw, Texas,
pop. 581. His parents were Ansel and Elwyn
Thompson, and he had one younger brother,
Joel Lee. He attended elementary school
at Saginaw Elementary, a part of which was
housed in the old WPA-era building that sits at
the corner of West McLeroy Blvd. and Bluebonnet. Junior High was in the same building, but
by then the school district had consolidated with
a neighboring district to the west to form the
EM-S ISD we have today.
Rice University in Houston, Texas, to compete
on the track and field squad. He was a member
of and won letters on the freshman team and
later the varsity track team.
Bob first competed in interscholastic athletics
in the seventh grade under the colors of EM-S,
blue and white, whose mascot was the Wildcats. In 1961, when he was in the tenth grade in
high school, the new W.E. Boswell High School
opened and all high school students in the
district moved to that campus. Until graduation
in 1964, Bob competed for Boswell in football,
basketball and track.
Subsequent to graduating from law school in
1976, he has practiced law in Houston, Texas.
Upon graduation from Boswell, he received an
athletic scholarship to
Bob graduated from Rice with a BA in 1968,
and entered the U. S. Navy as an officer trainee,
then served five years as a Navy Supply Corps.
Officer. While in the Navy he took a Masters in
Management at George Washington University.
After the service he attended the University of
Texas of Law, in Austin.
He is married to the former Rachel Jane Adams
of Alvin, Texas, whom he met while at Rice, and
who is now a physician in Houston. They have
two children, Stephen Taylor Thompson, an
engineer with Shell Oil Company in Houston,
and Katherine Thompson Keller, a CPA with
Forum Energy Technologies, also in Houston,
and one grandson, Jackson Duke Keller. Duke is
in Montessori School for toddlers.

Neal Wilson’s 40-year career began and ended
in Lewisville. In 1965, he took his first coaching
position at Lewisville Junior High School after
graduating from North Texas State University.
After one season he left to become an assistant
coach at Decatur and the next year, 1967, he
was named head coach as a 24-year- old. He
led Decatur to the playoffs in 1968 and’ 70. He
left Decatur for Saginaw Boswell in 1971. In seven seasons he won 61 games and led Boswell to
the playoffs three times. He returned in 1978
as the head coach at Lewisville High School. In
1983, he accepted the job as athletics director
while continuing to coach until 1986. Coach
Wilson lost his battle with leukemia at the young
age of 65 in January of 2008.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; sons and
daughters-in-law, Darrell and Sherri, and Lance
and Stephanie; two grandchildren.
