The following July their son, Greg, was born. A year later, they bought a radio station sightunseen in the semi-rural Gold Rush town of Jackson, California, sold everything, and said good-bye to D.C. Larry was a grad student and teaching at Penn State. During this time they took the summer off, bought a van, loaded up the cat and dog, and went camping all across Canada. Later they moved to Washington D.C. where Larry was deputy director of the International City Management Association which publishes textbooks of city management as well as lobbies Congress on behalf of cities. Judy was chief economic writer of U.S. News and World Reports. After their son was born, she worked part time as copy editor for the Washington Post. While on the East Coast, they owned a 30-foot sloop and did a lot of sailing in Chesapeake Bay. They also cycled in Europe and in 1981 did the Bike Centennial Route from Astoria to Yorktown alternating camping with staying in cheap motels. They then moved to California. Quite a change from D.C., but it was a good place to raise children. By now daughter, Sarah, had come along, and Judy could spend time at home as well as work at the station with Larry. They owned the local station for 20 years, and it was truly local. They covered a variety of news from high school football games to hazards such as cows out on the road. Their greatest achievement was a December fundraiser in which the station raised money for clothing for children. The last year they raised $72,000. The individual children would be taken to Kmart that opened its doors early that day as well as provided a 25% discount. Each child, aided by an adult, was able to spend $80-100. New club members in attendance -Marilouise Martikke of Morro Bay, Mike Belford of Paso Robles, and John Oberg of Arroyo Grande -were welcomed with a round of applause. Minutes of the club's December meeting were approved (msc/Robert Davis/Harvey Cohon). A special thanks was extended to meeting greeters Glenn & Gail Vanderlinde and Jaleah Bryn, and suppliers of refreshment, Frank Mullin, Jeanne Hanysz, Martin Howell and Sandy Pitt. Steven Gee suffered a brain aneurysm just before Christmas, reported Gail Vanderlinde. He is recovering at the Stanford Medical Center. Clip Boards Mark Lyon noted that the Blossom Ride in Reedley is set for the first Saturday of March. He won't be attending this year, but he circulated a clipboard for names of people who might be attending and could help organize a club social event. Last year's ride chairman, Tim Long, said plans are proceeding for a dinner to thank members who've served as leaders for two or more rides. The date and place for the dinner in February have not yet been set. In reviewing the year from the list in the newsletter he found that there had been 895 scheduled rides led by 55 members. He passed a clipboard with a preliminary list of leaders invited to the dinner, asking for names of those he might have missed. Correspondence Pamela Nargie wrote thanking everyone for their support in the last few months. Sheriff Patrick Hedges thanked the club for its donation of $500 to his department for its bicycle program which was used to provide bikes to underprivileged children and give jail inmates training in bicycle repair and maintenance. club ended 2006 with $69,544.00 in its various bank accounts. This is enough money to cover most of the club's expenses for an entire year. He emphasized that this was after the club donated more than $20,000 to community organizations and projects, and scholarships. As volunteer coordinator for the Wildflower Ride, Dave Williams also said volunteer sign-ups are increasing, but more help is needed. Reports Warren Hockenbary, club Safety Program Director, offered two tips. Clean your helmet by taking it into the shower with you, drying it in the sun. Use the "Medical Information Carrier System," on your helmet. (Janie Goldenberg said the club has purchased a supply of the systems and she has them for anyone wanting one.) Dave Williams said that many in law enforcement don't know about the systems, and the club board should write the local agencies and inform them that in case of an accident bicyclists have crucial medical information attached to their helmets. Historian Janie Goldenberg said this month's Mystery SLOB would remain a mystery another month, since the individual didn't attend AND no one guessed the identity. As a point of information, she happened upon a '97 club directory, listing 160 entries. She compared it with the latest list, which had 411 entries. (Note: a 157% increase in nine years.) Pictures from any and all club events, she emphasized, are welcomed for the club's archives And finally she introduced a mascot for the Tortoise Group, a stuffed turtle. She welcomes suggestions for the mascot's name. Stu Goldenberg said an insert with board meeting minutes and membership information was missing from some copies of the January newsletter. He said the insert will appear in the February issue. Deadline for copy is 8am, January 15th. Finances Former Treasurer Dave Williams submitted the annual financial report, which showed that after all revenue and expenses were totaled the SLO Coaster Page 5 February 2007 Minutes from January 4 th General Meeting continued: Wildflower Ride Dave Abrecht, Wildflower Ride coordinator, stressed the need for volunteers, and said letters to ride captains would soon be in the mail. President Frank reminded that Wildflower Ride registration opens midnight Monday, January 8, and as usual is to fill up very quickly. Ooops! A member of the Frequent Feeders group received a ticket in San Luis Obispo on yesterday's ride, Dave Abrecht reported. It was for failure to yield making a left turn in front of a SLO police vehicle. Bicycle Coalition Coalition executive director Adam Fukushima thanked everyone for the amazing turnout of support for the current draft of the trails element of the county plan. In spite of opposition from the very powerful Farm Bureau, the supervisors approved the element 5 to 0. Their next initiative is to influence the city's upcoming budget priorities forum. Last year, bicycle facilities were a priority, and the Coalition wants the same this year. So a pizza party and rally is planned for January 10, just prior to the city council's priority-setting session. The "Unmet Bicycle Needs" list is being drafted for the SLO Council of Governments. Adam encouraged people to let them know of problems or other needs to bring to SLO-COG's attention. Tim Long asked about the "Share the Road" signs that are appearing in the North County. Bruce Collier said that they were part of an initiative started by the county four years ago. Bob Garing Award Nominations are being solicited for the Bob Garing Award. Historian and prior award recipient Janie Goldenberg described the award and criteria, which appeared in the January SLO Coaster. Nominations will be accepted until the end of February, and if there is a winner, it will be announced at the May potluck. President Frank described how revered and respected Bob Garing was and how he emphasized riders' role in cycling safety. A plaque in his honor is being dedicated January 20 at Mission Plaza, and a series of club rides are planned, all of which will end at the ceremonies commemorating the laying of the plaque. SLO Coaster Page 6 The Old and the New Past President Red Davis introduced outgoing board members: Vice President Frank Mullin, Secretary Judy Lang, Treasurer Dave Williams, Ride Coordinator Tim Long, Membership Chairs John & Pat Rogers, Safety Program Director Dave Abrecht, Past President Joan Pe t e r s e n,Fa r me r s ’Ma r ke tBoot hDi r e c t orJ ohnAl t ma n, Historian Janie Goldenberg, Advocate Gail Davis, and Newsletter Editors Pamela Nargie and Stu Goldenberg. Former Past President Joan Petersen installed the new and continuing board members, reading for each their duties and responsibilities as outlined in the club's bylaws and adding her own special interpretations. They were: President Frank Mullin, Vice President Gil Pitt, Secretary Larry Rutter, Treasurer Alston Paff, DirectorAt-Large Warren Hockenbary, Ride Coordinator Mark Lyon, Membership Chair Chris Broome (replacing Richard Fox who resigned), and Past-President Red Davis, as well as continuing members John Altman, Janie Goldenberg, Stu Goldenberg, Pamela Nargie, and Gail Davis. Incoming Vice President Gil Pitt read a poem expressing his feelings about assuming the very important post: At meetings of clubs, by an effort of will I always contrive to keep perfectly still. For it takes just one word of annoyance or pity And, Wham!, there I am on another committee. Now this worked pretty well until I came here Then it's like I was drunk from way too much beer In a condition of weakness, what remained was VP And losing all common sense, told Joan, OK that's for me. I'll give it my best for the whole of this year. But I'd like to make one thing perfectly clear: In spite of the good times, I know in my gut I'll return to my old ways and keep my mouth shut. Doi ngt he“Cont i ne nt al ” Vice President Gil then introduced the program, Red and Gail Davis, who treated the club to a gorgeous and enchanting slide presentation of their recent trip to Europe that included Italy (Venice and Florence), Switzerland, France and England. After all the oohs and aahs died down . . . . . . at 8:45 pm there was a motion to adjourn (msc/Buster Schaffer /John Rogers.) February 2007 Meeting of Board of Directors - Minutes of January 11, 2007 San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club at Novo Restaurant, San Luis Obispo By Larry Rutter, Secretary SLOBC Current board members present, representing a quorum: President Frank Mullin, Vice President Gil Pitt, Secretary Larry Rutter, Treasurer Alston Paff, Directors-at-Large for Safety Warren Hockenbary and for Farmers Market John Altman, Ride Coordinator Mark Lyon, Membership Chair Chris Broome, Past-President Robert Davis, Historian Janie Goldenberg, Newsletter Co-Editor Stu Goldenberg, Newsletter Co-Editor Pamela Nargie, Advocate Gail Davis. Former board members and guests present: Tim & Shelly Long, Adam & Amy Fukushima, Judy Lang, Joan & Harvey Petersen, Sandy Pitt, John & Pat Rogers President Frank Mullin called the meeting to order at approximately 6:45pm. Bicycle Coalition Past President Davis said that because the board was about to present a check for $15,000 to the Bicycle Coalition he felt he should bring us up to date on the Coalition. The original donation was to allow Executive Director Adam Fukushima to be full time. However, Mr. Fukushima has taken a position with the city of San Luis Obispo which prevents him from working full time until at least June, when the job with the city is scheduled to end. President Mullin asked: How does the move affect the Coalition's budget? Mr. Fukushima and Past President Davis said that at this time it was not certain. Mr. Fukushima said that he thought his job with the city was in the interest of the entire bicycle community, since he will be working on issues like the city's bike plan and other bicycle matters. It was moved by Ms Nargie (following a suggestion from President Mullin) to invite Tom Nuckols of the Bicycle Coalition Frank Mullin passing the check to Adam to the board's next meeting to report on the Coalition's Fukushima financing. The motion, seconded by Ms Davis, passed without objection. President Mullin then presented the check for $15,000 to Mr. Fukushima, who on behalf of the Coalition thanked SLOBC for its generosity. Minutes Mr. Altman moved approval of the minutes of the December 2006 meeting, seconded by Ms Goldenberg. The motion passed without objection. Treasurer's Report Treasurer Paff submitted her report, showing a total balance in all accounts of $55,681.16. No actions were necessary or requested. Newsletter Report Co-editor Nargie reported that the schedule for the next newsletter would be, as usual, 8 a.m. on the 15th of the month. She said she also wanted to make sure she had pictures of all the new board members. No actions were necessary or requested. Training Supplies for Homeless Following up from the presentation of Jaleah Brynn from the December meeting, Mr. Altman reported that a full package of supplies for the homeless who pass the bike safety program has been assembled. Including helmets, SLO Coaster Page 7 February 2007 Board Meeting notes From January 11 th continued: lights, locks, and other items. the package will cost $132.00 when purchased at a considerable discount offered by the Cambria Bicycle Outfitters for ten graduates. Mr. Broome suggested that the club consider donating used and repaired bikes to the homeless. In response to several questions and requests for clarification, President Mullin said that he will invite Ms Brynn to the next meeting to discuss the program and how the funds might be used at the Prado Day Center and other steps that might be taken to help the homeless who ride bikes. Tour of California Support Past President Davis said that the Tour is offering the club a "Gold Level" booth again this year, a $5,000 value, for our $1,000 contribution. He proposed the club share the booth with other bicycle groups. In response to a suggestion by President Mullin, (endorsed by Mr. Fukushima on behalf of the Bicycle Coalition) it was moved by Past President Davis, seconded by Director-at-Large Hockenbary, to invite the Coalition to manage the booth on behalf of SLOBC. The motion passed without objection. President Mullin said that the Tour needs more volunteers, and he will supply more information on how to volunteer in the next SLO Coaster and on the Club website. Ms Nargie said she would hate to see a lack of local support for the Tour. Membership Membership Chairman Broome proposed to undertake two initiatives. The first is to contact lapsed members in the hope that they will renew their membership. The cost would be about $60-70. The second initiative would be to print membership cards on a laser printer, rather than have them duplicated by a commercial printer, and to stop having the club president sign each card. The cost would be much less than the amount set aside for printing. It was generally agreed that it was worthwhile to contact lapsed members and encourage them to rejoin and to reproduce the membership cards with a laser printer. Moreover, since both are within the budget's parameters and within the Membership Chairman's authority, no further board action was needed for the Membership Chairman to proceed with the initiatives. Adjournment At 8 p.m. a motion to adjourn was made by Past President Davis, seconded by Vice President Pitt. It passed without objection. As part of my Community Action Project for 6th grade, I am planning on raising money for The Bikes for Tikes program. I am doing this to get more underprivileged kids in our community on bikes. I will accomplish this by riding from Los Osos to Santa Barbara, a distance of about 120 miles, over 2 days. I ’ ma s k i n gf orp l e d g e sf r om the people who are interested in helping me accomplish this goal. You can help by pledging money per mile or a flat fee. You can email your initial pledge to [email protected], and then mail the check to 1825 13th St. Los Osos, CA 93402. I will be collecting pledges until February 18 th. The ride will take place on February 10 th. I stayed up until midnight to make sure that the registration was automatically activated at active.com and at our website. There appeared to be no problems and no emails complaining of difficulties. I went to bed and got up at 6 so I could process all the registration data from active and from our website. As usual there were problems which caused my data processing program grief. Those problems were finally solved at 7:30 and I could begin loading the data. By the time I had processed the first batch, there was a lot more data at both active and our website. I finally caught up at 9 AM and looked at how we were doing –and we were already full, so I quickly went and shut down registration at both active and at our website –9:10 AM just over 9 hours (four hours faster t ha nourpr e vi ous“ r e c or d. ”Doe st ha tme a nI ’ l lha vet os t a yupa l lni g htne x ty e a rt oma kes ur ewedon’ t have a surprise at 6 AM with 1800 people registered? SLO Coaster Page 10 February 2007 Pedaling Through the Past By Janie Goldenberg, Historian February 2007 The 2007 Wildflower Ride Registration filled in 9 hours and 10 minutes, with over 1400 riders signing up. This article about the 1977 Wildflower is an interesting contrast. The Wildflower Century held on Saturday, April 9, 1977, was completed by 140 bikers. The bikers came from all over the state, with large groups from the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. Foxy Grandpa, a most famous septugenarian, gave the event national status by his participation. He rides in biking events all over the United States and is a familiar figure in the biking world. There was no average biker because the participants ranged in age from 7 to 72. The riders varied in ability from the hot-shot racer to the tourist to the novice. The reasons for riding the 106 miles were mixed, from getting one more century patch, to keeping i nb i k i n gf or m, t ot h e“ s e e i n gi fIc a nr i d eab i c y c l e100mi l e s ” .Th et h i n g st h a tt h eb i k e r sd oh a v ei nc ommona r et h a tt h e ya r en ot overweight, are careful with diet when riding and have a determination to overcome the fatigue to finish what they started. A father with an 8 ½ year old daughter drew the applause of the spectators as they crossed the finish line. Both father and daughter were very tired. The San Luis Obispo Bike Club with Bill Murphy, President, and Skip Amerine, Vice President, hosted the Wildflower by providing food and sag wagon service. Several of the wives baked cookies before the event. Food stops were at the 40 mile, 70 mile and 90 mile locations with sandwiches and other main meal items at the 70 mile stop. The riders drank 40 gallons of water, punch or juice, ate many pounds of bananas, apples and oranges, and all of the homemade cookies, sandwiches and celery slices laced with peanut butter. Five sag wagons carrying water, tools and spare parts served the riders over the 106 mile course. With the great difference in ability and endurance, the riders were spread over many miles. The ride began at 7 a.m. with early finishers at 12:30 p.m. and the last one to finish at 6:30 p.m. The sag wagons kept track of the riders, seeing that no one who was in trouble was left by the roadside or unaided. Very few lupine or California poppies struggled through this dry period to show their beautiful colors. Those that did show were appreciated and made the 6 th annual Wildflower Century a success.
