The annual earnings include a one-time non-operating gain of $5.0 million. The 2013 year-end earnings are a substantial improvement over a net loss of $670,000 reported in 2012. Over the course of 2013, delinquent loans have declined 32%, from $19.0 million at December 31, 2012, to $13.0 million at December 31, 2013. As a consequence, provision for loan losses decreased to $3.8 million in 2013, from $16.4 million in 2012. Our significant improvement in 2013 is very encouraging, and gives rise to the view that we have turned a corner. Nevada’s economy has shown marked signs of resurgence, particularly in increasing property values. This brighter economic outlook has manifested itself in several ways at the Credit Union; delinquencies continue to fall, provision for loan losses has decreased, we have experienced seven consecutive quarters of positive earnings, and have ended the year with a regulatory net worth ratio of 6.32%. At December 31, 2013, SSSCU reported total assets of $637, and strong liquidity. In 2013 we saw outstanding improvements in our financial results over 2012. We are encouraged by the progress we have made and look forward to building upon that progress in 2014. And, as we move forward, we hope you will see our progress reflected by a greater value in your financial lives. Thank you for your continued support and confidence. To avoid fraudulent charges and data breaches, you should monitor your accounts daily. Review your card transactions through a secure Internet connection at least once a day. Remember, these hackers are sophisticated and will often ‘test’ cards, making purchases of less than $5, before making a big purchase. If you see suspicious charges, contact us immediately. You should also periodically check your credit report, because it is important to check your credit scores for sudden changes. A big score drop could indicate identity theft. Consumers are entitled to one free copy of their credit report every year at www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877.322.8228. It’s important for you to remember you are protected against fraudulent purchases when you use your debit or credit card with Visa’s zero liability protection policy. When you sign for a purchase with a debit card, it has the same zero liability protections as a credit card, and most financial institutions provide provisional credit within 24 hours. Finally, consider purchasing identity theft protection. These services monitor your purchases to help detect any potential identity theft or credit card fraud. Silver State Schools Credit Union offers different programs of the Fraud Defender identity protection, and offers an affordable way to protect and monitor your personal identity. Be vigilant of your financial accounts, as there is no way to know when or if financial fraud will occur. Being aware and applying these few simple steps is almost always the best preventative measure. And be on guard against phishers looking to steal additional private information. It often starts with an email with link to an internet site that looks real, but is just a scam to get you to enter your personal information.
