A: First a little history
lesson, so “heads up,
class.” Little Orphan
Annie was the creation
of cartoonist Harold
Gray. She made her debut on the comic pages
of the New York Daily
News in 1924 and continued as a syndicated
strip until Gray’s death
in 1968. There were
several decoder rings
issued. I suspect yours
is one that was made
of brass and was sold
with a “Slidomatic Radio
Decoder.” Most decoder
rings from the 1930s
sell in the $50 to $100
range, depending on
both desirability and
rarity.

made by Johnson
Brothers in England.

A: First, a little background about this pattern. The design was
trademarked by Gladding McBean and
Company in 1975. The
first hand decorated
lines of dinnerware were
introduced in 1937, and
by 1940, more than 15
patterns had been marketed. Two of the most
popular are Coronado, a
favorite with collectors,
and El Patio from 1934.
Apple (1940), Desert
Rose (1941) and Ivy
(1948) are among the
most popular patterns.
Typical prices for El Patio include a cereal bowl,
$12; a dinner plate, $15;
and a sugar bowl, $20.

ANNUAL PINK ENVELOPE

What to do? What to do? What to do? Here we
are less than a month into summer and it’s already
time for PA hunters to make that important decision on where they plan to hunt antlerless deer
this coming fall and winter. If you are not familiar
with the annual ritual of applying for a PA antlerless license, or what’s often called a doe tag, let
me explain.
New 2015-16 PA hunting licenses are good from
July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. They went on
sale back in mid-June at license issuing agents,
county treasurer’s offices, and on the PA Game
Commission’s (PGC’s) website. Each PA hunting
license comes with an antlered (buck) tag and at
least one of the official pink envelopes required to
apply for a PA antlerless tag. The Commonwealth
of PA is currently divided into 23 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), which are clearly defined
geographical areas on the map and on the ground,
each outlined by readily identifiable roads, waterways, and the state borders. Prior to publishing
the 2015-16 PA Hunting & Trapping Digest, the
PGC decided on each WMU’s antlerless license
allocation for this year. Hunters must use an official application form and can put down their 1st,
2nd, and 3rd WMU choices when submitting their
applications to any of the 67 PA county treasurer’s
offices IAW the established timeline. There are
multiple rounds to the PA antlerless license application lottery, and experienced hunters know that
some WMUs sell out of their allocations quickly
in the early rounds. Hunters are forced to decide
each summer where they plan on hunting antlerless deer (out of 23 WMUs) and how to rank order their submissions on each application in each
round.
There are important dates to remember for this
year’s application schedule. County treasurers will
begin processing certain applications on these
dates, so mail early. July 13 – Residents can apply
for their first antlerless license. (That’s this coming Monday for procrastinators who have put off
buying their new 2015-16 hunting license!) July 27
– Nonresident applications will be accepted. August 3 – The 1st round of unsold antlerless licenses is open to both residents and nonresidents for
WMUs with remaining allocations. Also, hunters
can begin submitting for unlimited antlerless tags
in WMU 2B (the vast majority of Allegheny County
and portions of surrounding suburban counties).
August 17 – Residents and nonresidents can apply in the 2nd round of unsold antlerless licenses.
Only a few WMUs will have remaining allocations
by that point. August 24 – Over-the-counter sales
open for WMUs 2B in Western PA and 5C & 5D
out east. October 5 – Any WMUs with remaining
allocations open for over-the-counter sales.
Here’s the dilemma I face each year. I like to hunt
antlerless deer in WMU 1A (home), out east in
WMU 4C on my brother’s property, and in nearby
WMU 2D, since I can concurrently scout where I
will eventually bear hunt. Based on how doe tags
have historically sold out, my “strategy” for 201516 will probably consist of WMU 4C in the opening round, WMU 2D in the 1st unsold round (if
some are still available), and WMU 1A in the 2nd
unsold round. (Here’s a tip! The remaining antlerless license allocation for each WMU is updated
regularly on the PGC’s website once sales start,
and you can also confirm you’ve received an antlerless license on-line.)
There is no doubt the PA antlerless license application process can be confusing. If you have any
questions, pages 34-36 of the PA Hunting & Trapping Digest clearly outline the entire process. Remember to use one of the official application forms
and an official pink envelope. Use the checklist on
the pink envelope to avoid having your application

So here is a cute idea that was sent in by Megan from San Jose, CA. She
wanted to know if you could do a layout of your pictures as the American
Flag. Well Megan here it is! There are a few different ways to do this. One
would be to take pictures from your 4th of July Celebrations that are the
same colors as the flag and arrange them to
make them look like a flag. These pictures
would be good ones for the blue and red
parts of your flag. The majority of the picture is red/blue.
The second way would be
digitally add a red, white, or
blue filter to the picture. So
just like a couple weeks ago with the Worhal pictures, your
whole picture will have a red, white, or blue hue to it. And

Thanks to the ingenuity of our Chinese friends,
we here in the US celebrate our independence this
month with massive displays of colorful fireworks.
Every year when we sing our national anthem
and enjoy the vibrant patterns created by “bombs
bursting in air,” I remind myself that most bombs
are deadly, not beautiful like the fireworks display. Although both use similar ingredients, one
is intended to kill; the other to entertain. In this
metaphor we see an example of how something
can be used for both good and evil. In the hands
of capable, careful, and caring people, something
dangerous becomes glorious. But the opposite is
also true.
Freedom—the very thing we celebrate with
fireworks—can also be used for good and evil. As
believers in Christ, we are free from the restrictive
Mosaic law, but the Bible warns us not to use our
spiritual freedom for selfish purposes: “Do not use
liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through
love serve one another” (Gal. 5:13).
Not everyone has political and religious freedom,
but all believers in Christ have spiritual freedom.
We must not use it as a weapon to impose our will
on others but to display the glory of God’s will.
Free from the law—O happy condition!

Grace hath redeemed us once for all. —Bliss
Freedom doesn’t give us the right to do what we

1/2 tsp. grated lemon peel, optional
2 liters lemon-lime soda, chilled
In a mixing bowl, beat sugar and lemon juice on
high speed for 3 minutes or until sugar is partially
dissolved. Gradually add milk, beating constantly on
high. Stir in the lemon extract and peel if desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Stir in soda just before
serving. Serve over ice. Yield: 3 quarts.

36 pastel jelly beans or peanut M&Ms
12 pastel paper cupcake liners
In a heavy saucepan over low heat, cook marshmallows, butter and peanut butter until marshmallows
are melted; stir in chow mein noodles. Divide into
12 mounds on a waxed paper-lined pan. With lightly
buttered hands, quickly shape each mound into a
nest; make an indentation in the center. Fill nests
with jelly beans. Trim 1/2” from each cupcake liner;
place nests in liners. Store in an airtight container.
