GIRS SOCCER - CCS CHAMPIONS “RUNNING OF THE BULLS
December, 2007 GIRS SOCCER - CCS CHAMPIONS “RUNNING OF THE BULLS” GOLF TOURNAMENT MAY 31, 2009, AT DEEP CLIFF PROCEEDS TO PURCHASE ATHLETIC TRAINERS CART On Sunday, May 31st the Monta Vista Athletic Booster will hold its annual Running of the Bulls Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place at Deep Cliff Golf Course. Registration begins at noon with a 1:00pm shotgun start. Each year the Athletic Boosters choose a special project to fund with the proceeds from the golf tournament. In the recent past, we have purchased bleachers for use on the fields, pool deck and field house. We have also contributed toward the purchase of new scoreboards in the main gym. This year, we will purchase a first aid cart to be used by the athletic trainer. This cart (pictured to right) will be used by the trainer to carry first aid supplies and deliver water to the athletic teams. And when necessary, carry an injured player from the athletic fields to the training room. Your participation in the golf tournament will make this purchase possible. The Running of the Bulls Golf Tournament is a fun and relaxing way to spend a great afternoon on the golf course with friends & family, maybe meet some new friends and have some great food. A tri-tip dinner with all the fixings is included in your registration fee of $115.00. A registration form is available with the Banner. Please fill out the form and send it in right away as we only have 7 foursomes remaining. If you have any questions about the golf tournament, please contact Sam Reinhart at [email protected] or me at [email protected]. If you are interested in sponsoring the tournament, please contact Dana Drysdale @ [email protected]. I hope to see all of you at Deep Cliff on Sunday, May 31st. Thank you. Winter Sports Highlights Girls Basketball JV Girls Basketball The Monta Vista JV girls basketball team finished in second place in the El Camino league with a 10-2 record. Highlights of the season include an overall excellent defensive effort from all 12 team members. Our defense was our team's greatest strength. Only twice (and both times by the first place team) did a league opponent score 10 or more points in any quarter against our defense. Our most exciting moment must have been when Steff Sum made 2 free throws with 2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at Fremont HS. We eventually won the game in overtime. Coaches Bradac and Jennings would like to thank the parents of our players for the tremendous support at our Holiday Tournament, for driving to all of our games, and for your cheers at the games. Thank you parents Varsity Girls basketball The Monta Vista girls varsity basketball team had many accomplishments. The players on the team continued to improve individually throughout the season to have a successful season as League Champions. It was a great team effort for all the players, especially Sophomore Alex Chiu and Junior Kelli Sum. Chiu led in rebounds and points, and Kelli, although small, pushed through all kinds of defense to get the Matadors ball into play. This amazing season was not only highlighted by team accomplishment – winning league, getting ranked 9th in CCS—but it was defined by an inseparable bond between each and every player. There is no mere, single word, phrase, sentence—or even paragraph, to describe the endless amount of inside jokes, the memorable moments at breakfast/brunch/lunch at Borelli’s house, or just how much each and every one of us care about each other. We played together as a team, as proved by majority of our wins being characterized by ninety percent of the team scoring—truly, a team effort. Highlights: Winning league Getting into CCS 2nd Place in our tournament Memorable Moments: Beating Mountain View to become co-league champions A well-fought game against Evergreen Valley, but sadly losing at the last minute Boys Basketball JV Boys basketball The JV boys basketball team finished the season with a 10-14 overall record and 3-9 league record. The season was a tail of two halves as in preseason the boys were able to put up a 7-5 record beating certain opponents by double figures. However when league rolled around we struggled as shots would just not fall for us. The kids would never give up competing in every single game. Our team was led by sophomore guard Ryan Michelfelder who average 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. The other leader of the team was freshmen newcomer Mihir Chavan who helped defend the paint averaging an astounding 2 blocks a game. He also chipped in with 7 points and 5 rebounds per game. The coach would like to thank all his players for the hard work they put into their season. He would also like to thank the parents and fans that game to support the players all those games. JV Coach: Calvin Wong Varsity Boys basketball Boys Basketball had a very successful year. They started the season with victories over Fremont and the mighty Alumini team. They then journeyed south to the San Luis Obispo tournament where they faced four very good teams from southern California and unfortunately lost all four. They played their hearts out but were just outmatched and outsized. When they returned they entered the Independence tournament where they faced a very good Hollister team and came away with a victory before losing to the eventual CCS Champion Bellarmine Bells. After the Bellarmine defeat they won 4 out of their next 5 with victories over Cupertino, San Jose, and Watsonville. League began in with the toughest stretch possible with games against Lynbrook and Homestead. They led both games going into the 4th quarter but couldn’t hold on to either. They then rattled off 7 wins in a row including a phenomenal victory over rival, and league champion, Lynbrook in front of a sold out crowd at Monta Vista. This was the game of the year and the only league loss for the Vikings, the crowd was big, loud, and very excited and the players loved it! To end the season they lost to Homestead and Milpitas but defeated Saratoga at home for Senior night. CCS followed the next Tuesday and for the 3rd year in a row they got a first round victory. In a game where the Matadors trailed the entire game they came back in the fourth quarter with tenacious defense and two clutch freethrows by senior Kevin Lang. Alvarez missed a shot at the buzzer to tie the game and Monta Vista escaped with a victory. Next was a trip down to Salinas where they faced a very big and very physical team. The Matadors came out firing but in the end were simply outmatched by the Cowboys, who eventually lost in the CCS Championship game to Bellarmine. All in all another very successful year for the Matadors! Kevin Lang and Krish Rangarajan both received 1st team all-league and Phaniteja Kanneganti was 2nd team all-league. More importantly the team grew throughout the year and competed in every single game every minute! Girls Soccer Monta Vista girls varsity soccer has a season for the ages; CCS Champions After winning the SCVAL De Anza Division for the first time since 2006, these 18 girls went on to win the CCS Division 1 Championship with a 2-1 win over league foe Palo Alto, a feat MV has not accomplished since 1979. The team finished with a 17-3-3 record. After starting out impressively 8-0 in pre-season we hit a bump against Palo Alto in our first league match eventually losing 3-1. We rebounded to play tough teams game in and game out to win the league in which 6 or the 7 teams went onto the CCS playoffs. The coaching staff of Alan Kute, Greg Wendschlag and Jon van den Berg could not be prouder of this group. The team overall played consistently and had contributions from all players. A few standouts include junior, Micehlle Pao, the League MVP, who scored 14 goals and had 5 assists and played just about every position at somepoint this season. Senior Shandon Rovetta, was our defensive anchor and recognized as the SCVAL Defensive Player of the Year. She also scored 7 goals and had 3 assists and was very dangerous on set plays and free kicks. Junior Cheryl Kute gave us great balance between attacking and defending in the midfield and had 8 goals and 10 assists, while sophomore Sandra Ley had 9 goals and 9 assists. The league recognized Gabby Ley as the freshman of the year and she came on stronger as the games became bigger scoring the first goal in the finals on a great header off a free kick from Rovetta. Our defense gave up less than one goal per game (21 goals allowed in 23 games) and the players responsible for this were Alyssa Walker, our goalie, and defenders Jacquie Stuart (1st team all league), Rovetta, Claire Nastari (2nd team all league), Zohar Liebermensch (1st team all league) and Rachel Major. In the midfield, Kute (1st team all league), G. Ley, Cheryl Tom (1st team all league), Vanessa Forney (2nd team all league)who also scored a goal with her head in the finals, Nitya Simon, Jennifer LeQuieu, Crissy Stuart, Taylor Francoeur all played solid throughout the year. Up Front Pao, S. Ley (1st team all league), Julie Davis, and Alex Francoeur all gave us production. We scored in every single game this season on the way to 56 total goals. Overall the season was a blast. From our ropes course/team building event to the senior game in the rain and mud to the league and CCS championships it was a lot of work but a good time. The only thing that could top it would be to repeat it all again next season. The schools JV soccer team came together very quickly, with a core of the players knowing each other through their club soccer experiences. They started pre-league play, with a 10-0-0 record, knocking out most opponents with suffocating defense and great finishing on goal. Fantastic team, finished 3rd overall, and as it turns out, the most talented HS Girls Soccer league in CCS for 2009 - from Burlingame all the way to Salinas. Overall standings: Pts Team (just top 3) • • • Homestead Palo Alto Monta Vista Any one of these teams could have won the jv league. The team's overall record was 15-2-3 (W, L, T) scoring 58 goals and only conceeding 10. We were led by sophomores Mary Matsunami, Grace Huang, Chelse Tsai-Simek, Briana Zimmers, and Olivia Li, with freshmen Sophia Tiene, Savannah Day, Katie Upton, Kaylene Reid-Kearney, Dani Beiser, and Vivian Mueller (goalie) anchoring the stingiest defense in the De Anza league. Freshmen Samantha van den Berg, Rannah Dabiri, Nicole Lou, Hannah Debates, Danna Ashkar, and worked tirelessly across our midfield, and Diana Chin, Rachel Kapul, Hiromi Meguro, Annie Blake-Burke and Jessica Rahn lead our attack. Jessica earned Most Valuable Offensive Player in the entire leage - scoring 17 goals, and 8 assists. Jesse, Olivia, Annie, Hannah, Grace, and Samantha led the team in points assists and goals. This team had 19 different players score goals, and assists from 20 different players - a phenomenal team wide contribution. JV Players Jessica Rahn (Jesse), Mary Matsunami, Olivia Li, Vivian Mueller, and Grace Huang were all asked to join the varsity squad for the what turns out to be our CCS Champions - Monta Vista 2009!!
