JUNE 2014 EXTENSIONS President’s Message INSIDE ISSUE JuneTHIS 2014 ............... President’s Message ~ VADA-CH May Meeting Minutes ~ George Williams Clinic ~ Arabian Year-End Award ~ VADA May Meeting Minutes ~ Commonwealth Park Renovates ~ Hilda Gurney Clinic ~ Schooling Shows ~ 2014 Event Calendar ~ Classifieds ~ VADA of CHARLOTTESVILLE, INC. I hope that many of you were able to make it to the Jim Koford clinic. Jim is always a lot of fun and I hope that many of you were able to partake in his entertaining teaching. Our next big event is the chapter’s annual summer pool party at my house. It is always a lot of fun and I hope many of you will be able to make it. The date is tentatively July 19, but it may adjust a week or so to allow a couple of people with schedule conflicts to attend. Final information will be in the July newsletter. I hope that many of you are making plans to volunteer at the August licensed show at Culpeper. It always takes a lot of people to have shows come out well and to make it a good experience for the exhibitors and it would be really great to enhance the reputation of our show so it can grow in the future. The new facilities at Culpeper are lovely and everyone will be pleasantly surprised. I hope you will come and show or help out. Remember we are looking for new officers for next year. I hope some of you are considering running for office. We are trying a new meeting place for our next meeting. It will be at Travinia’s Restaurant on June 9. It is located in the shopping center where Trader Joe’s and the new movie theater are located. Hope you will join us. At least 1 of the 3 riders must show at or above 1st level, and no more than 1 out of every 3 tests per chapter can be at Intro. If there are more Intro riders entering than are allowed, members riding for the chapter will be decided based upon the date their entry was received. f a chapter has less than the minimum number of riders, too many Intro riders or riders not showing at the required levels, the chapters will be combined to form a VADA mixed team. f there are more Intro riders than allowed for a particular chapter, including the VADA mixed SAVE THE DATE September 6 & 7, 2014 VADA presents an auditor/rider clinic with George Williams Virginia Horse Center East Complex Lexington, VA Visit www.virginiadressage.org for more information - or the VADA Facebook page 2014 VADA-CH Award Standings 5/31 Schooling Division Level Rider Horse Avg. % Vol. Req. Present on the call were Alison Head, Alison Thompson, McGrath, Boar’s Head, Meredith Charlottesville, VA Beth Ripple, Jane Palmer, Jessie Ginsburg, Dianne Boyd, RobinBooye Nunnley, Laura Berne, Tracy Smith Oliver, Tina Submitted by Sherri Longaker, Nancy Lowey, Cody Armstrong, Gardy Bloemers, Angela Stanaway, Becky Paquet & Sheli King Minutes: Nancy moved that the minutes from the last meeting be approved. The motion was seconded by Meredith and approved by the Board. Treasurers Report: Jessie reported that we had a combined balance in all our accounts of $160,261.75 and that we could expect to see an increase in activity as we start gearing up for the fall show. BLM Update: Dianne reported that she will be at the VHC the weekend of May 17th for another show and will use that as an opportunity to check out the Center’s current staffing – stabling, food service, etc. as well as discuss procedural issues such as ring set-up and the like. Gardy reported that Laura Berne is taking over her role with respect to securing sponsors and Nancy will continue as the point person for vendors. Gardy will provide assistance to Laura and Gardy, Laura & Nancy have worked up a number of small changes in the process that will improve things from last year. Gardy moved that we place an ad seeking sponsors and vendors on the Region 1 website and on their show eblasts. Nancy seconded the motion and it was approved by the Board. The cost of the ads will be $175 for 6 month. They will also send a blurb on this topic to the chapters to use in their newsletters and websites and asked that everyone also reach out to the other participating GMOs for support. We discussed getting prizes from the vendors for use at the show and noted that we much prefer gift certificates to product. We then discussed the prizes & pricing guidelines for the different levels of prizes we award. Champions will get to choose from a jacket or several other options such as a quarter sheet or cooler and the reserve prize will be a halter with an engraved name plate. First place prizes for open classes should not exceed $10; High Point at each level $100 and overall senior open, Jr, YR & AA about $125-$150. Still to be decided is whether the Overall High Score winner will just receive a very impressive ribbon or a ribbon and a prize. VHC Update: Gardy gave us an update, stating that she is generally optimistic with the progress being made. There have been a number of staffing changes – the former Executive Director has retired, the former Director of the Kentucky Horse Park is coming on-board as a consultant, an Acting CFO has been hired and Gardy is currently working on-site one day a week. It appears likely that a 1% increase in the county sales tax will pass and be used to help fund the debt as well as assist with deferred 9 maintenance. JUNE 2014 Chapter Challenge Update: The prize list and entry forms are now on posted on the VADA web site. The most exciting news is that we decided to move the show from the top of the hill to the Wyllie Arena, which is safer in the event of a summer storm, closer to the barns and a great opportunity for VADA members to show in a really top-notch arena! A second ring (Northern) can be added if entries warrant. A number of chapters have already decided on their special awards, with more to follow, so this looks to be a great schooling show opportunity for our members. Chapters need to get the word out! George Williams Clinic: USDF accreditation has been awarded for the clinic, so University credit can be obtained. Rider applications are starting to come in and the auditor registration form will be posted soon. The next Board meeting will be June 10th at 8pm. The meeting was adjourned at 9pm. 10 JUNE 2014 Commonwealth Park Renovates! This year’s clinic was a very special clinic for me because Hilda Gurney was to be the featured clinician. I first encountered the art of dressage in Southern California while attending a Dressage demonstration ridden by Hilda Gurney and Keen. Seeing the two of them sparked my life-long journey to learn dressage. Hilda Gurney is a FEI 4 Dressage Judge, and “R” Dressage Sport Horse Breeding Judge and a “S” Dressage Judge. Her competition record speaks for itself: an Olympic team bronze medal in 1976, an individual gold and silver, and three team gold medals at the Pan Am Games, and six USET National Grand Prix Championships on the legendary Hall of Fame Inductee, Keen. The Region One Adult Clinic, Harmonizing with Your Horse, was held at Wyndham Oaks, Boyds, MD. Hilda Gurney presented the following notes for the Region One Adult Clinic: THE BASICS Scoring considerations include: The Basics, Quality of Gaits, Power – Uphill Balance, Transitions, Movements and Accuracy. In regards to scoring considerations, Hilda stressed The Basics. Basics for the horse include the 1st three steps of the FEI Training Scale: RHYTHM – ENERGY - TEMPO Rhythm presents a clear four beat walk with four evenly separated beats. The trot is two beats with a distinct period of suspension between beats. And the three beat canter has a distinct period of suspension between beats three and one. Tempo – the FEI definition of Rhythm includes the tempo. Usually, lower level horses work at a quicker tempo at trot and canter than higher level horses which have developed cadence as they become stronger and more balanced. SUPPLENESS – LATERAL & LONGITUDINAL In lateral suppleness, the horse needs to first move away from single leg pressure as asked for in leg yield or turn on the forehand. The rider’s inside leg also needs to prevent the horse from falling on his inside shoulder in corners and circles already at Intro and Training Levels. The rider’s outside leg needs to prevent the horse’s haunches from falling outward (if necessary), producing the desired body bend around the rider’s inside leg. This bend should be even throughout the horse’s whole body matching the line that the horse is following whether it is curved or straight. These concepts are necessary as basics for the more advanced lateral movements that require collection such as shoulder-in, travers, etc. Longitudinal suppleness includes the ability to round the horse’s topline so he can work over his back. Working over the back enhances the horse’s ability to step under his body therefore engaging his haunches, maintaining activity of his hind legs, and allowing his 12 JUNE 2014 NEWSLETTER center of gravity to shift backwards. This shifting back gives the rider a place to sit as well as resulting in elastic supple movement throughout the horse’s body. As a horse becomes stronger, his center of gravity shifts more backward increasing freedom and elevation of the shoulders, resulting in the horse developing extended as well as collected gaits. CONTACT – INCLUDES BEND Contact is the third goal in the FEI Training Scale. Contact is necessary for the development of both Rhythm and Suppleness. Contact should be established from the horse moving forward into the rider’s contact with the bit and not from the rider pulling backward which can cause the horse to shorten his neck. When the horse contracts his neck muscles, it often results in a tensing of this back muscles causing loss of elasticity. At first, it is enough that the horse accepts the contact moving into it while slightly rounding his poll and topline. The horse should softly chew the bit with a closed mouth. As training progresses, the horse responds to the rider’s inside leg aid just behind the girth filling out the outside rein which keeps the alignment of his neck and shoulders. This allows the inside hind leg to step under the horse’s weight allowing for elevation at his shoulders and better uphill balance. During the clinic, Hilda also stressed Quality of Gaits: Quality of Gaits SCORE! Build the gaits – the movement cannot score more than the quality of the gait. Keep the quality of the gait through circles and corners. So, don’t ride so small of a circle or corner that the gait suffers. Ride bigger strides, not faster. Don’t’ over ride by riding faster & pulling the horse short – quick will make a horse flat. Keep the vertical component of the gait: Bigger is not better if the back is lost. Bigger is not better if the horse flattens. In Lateral work, maintain the quality of the gait first, then proceed with the lateral movement. If lateral work is too sideways, you lose engagement. Horses are strong longitudinally, but weak laterally – use lateral work for more control. The leg yield is a basic lateral movement. The rider’s inside leg is active in rhythm with outside hind of horse. Keep the Tempo and Rhythm – don’t chase or get longer – the horse needs the time to cross the hind legs, keep the quality of the gait – keep the rhythm – don’t get flat. Get the horse to step under to collect the horse – maintain the haunches in leg yield. Finish leg yield with should-in. And practice A LOT of leg yields - from rail to center line, center line to rail, ¼ line to ¾ line, etc. The above is just a small segment of the information covered in the clinic. Hilda communicated the concepts clearly and was very open to questions from the auditors. I would highly recommend attending future clinics. Hilda Gurney is a USDF treasure! 13 Virginia Dressage Association - Charlottesville Chapter 2014 Dressage Schooling Shows Saturday, May 10, 2014 Cedar Creek Farm, Staunton, VA Dressage Schooling Show Judge: Donna Gatchell Saturday, September 20, 2014 Grayson Farm, Scottsville, VA Dressage, CT and Jumper Schooling Show and CT jumping schooling rounds Judges: Helen George for dressage TBD for jumping th Closing Date: Received by May 6 Closing Date: Received by September 16th Directions: th CEDAR CREEK FARM, STAUNTON (May 10 show) From Interstate 64: Go west to Interstate 81 and turn onto Interstate 81 going north.
