i Tipping
Everyone in America tips. It is customary to tip about
15-20% of the bill in restaurants. Additionally, you are
required to tip hotel staff, bartenders, taxi drivers and door
attendants. Tips are additional to local taxes. In Mexico
tipping is not expected however there are many American
tourists who tip so it is becoming more popular.
g Electricity
America
The current is a 110 volts, 60 cycle AC. The plug is a flat
two-prong variety. Some appliances will need a special
adaptor plug.
Mexico
Electrical sockets (outlets) in Mexico are very similar to the
electrical outlets found in the United States and Canada,
and if your appliance has a North American plug, it’s
possible that you won’t need any adapter at all in order to
plug in there. However, if your plug has a grounding or
polarisation prong, you may need an adaptor.

America
Visa application requirements have been recently updated
for passengers travelling to the United States of America.
It is now mandatory, under the Visa Waiver Program
to receive an electronic authorisation known as ESTA
(Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) no less than 72
hours before travel to the USA. This can be obtained at the
following website www.cbp.gov/esta. From 8 September
2010 the United States government will charge a US$14
as payment for the mandatory ESTA for all individuals
proposing to travel to the United States under the Visa
Waiver Program. The fee is payable by credit or debit card
and, it is very important to make payments through the
official website. This applies for passengers flying to the
United States either as destination/stop-over or as a via/
transit point.
For travel to the United States under the Viva Waiver
Program:
t:PVNVTUIBWFBNBDIJOFSFBEBCMFQBTTQPSUXIJDINVDI

the holder enters the USA, and
t*GZPVSQBTTQPSUIBTCFFOJTTVFECFUXFFO0DUPCFS
2005 and 25 October 2006 it must also contain either a
digital photograph of the holder or be an ‘e-passport’, or
t*GZPVSQBTTQPSUIBTCFFOJTTVFEPOPSBGUFS0DUPCFS
2006, the passport must be an “e-passport”
If you are unable to comply with the requirements you
need to obtain a US Non-Immigrant Visa at a US Embassy
or Consulate before you travel to the USA. Same day
applications are not possible.
We strongly recommend that you purchase a
comprehensive travel insurance policy when you book
your holiday.
Mexico
A tourist visa is not required for Australian citizens for a
stay up to 180 days.
NOTE: Whilst we take every care to ensure that the information in this brochure is
correct at time of printing, we urge you to check details of your selected holiday with
your travel consultant prior to booking. You should inquire about local issues and
conditions at destinations prior to travel. Qantas Holidays makes no representations
as to the safety, conditions or other issues that may exist at any destination. Travel

Planning your holiday
Boston Public Park
America
Look closely and the American quilt unfurls in all its surprising
variety. From the Big Apple and Las Vegas to flapjacks and curly
fries, it’s a country that’s beautifully stitched together, making it
your perfect holiday destination.
The West
The South
With front row seats to flame red sunsets over the Gulf
of Mexico, as well as adrenaline-pumping roller coasters,
celebrity studded streets and the country’s most notorious
prison, the west coast is a wild ride. Visit Anaheim’s
Disneyland Resort, jump aboard a cable car in San
Francisco, see killer whales at San Diego’s SeaWorld and
soar above the incredible Grand Canyon.
More than any other part of America, The South has an
identity all of its own - a musical way of speaking, a
complicated political history and a food culture that’s
synonymous with the region: succulent barbecue, plump
Gulf oysters, cheesy grits and fried green tomatoes.
Here, music history runs all the way from slave spirituals
through to jazz, blues, rock ‘n’ roll and 21st century
hip-hop. Nashville, the world’s undisputed country
music capital, will keep you honky tonkin’ deep into the
Tennessee night, while Elvis devotees will cherish a visit
to Graceland. Beaches run for hundreds of miles down the
South’s Atlantic Coast, so bring your sunscreen, and a pair
of sturdy shoes for the countless paths to hike, mountains
to climb, rivers to run and swamps to explore.
The East
The city of New York is the thumping heart of The East
with its boroughs, museums and parklands. Like much of
the region, it’s steeped in history yet has an immediacy
that greets you on every Brownstone covered street
corner. Tear yourself away from the Big Apple and wander
the hallowed halls of Harvard University - the oldest
institution of higher learning in America, President spot
in the country’s capital - Washington DC or explore the ivy
league town of Boston.

THE WEST

Yosemite National Park
The West
The West Coast of America is the ultimate page turner. Visit the bright lights of Las Vegas or glitzy Los
Angeles to try your hand at wealth and fame before escaping to laid-back San Francisco where you can
sample the local grappa of the nearby Napa Valley. However it’s the natural beauty of the region that
shouldn’t be missed. Don’t leave without viewing the Grand Canyon, a monumental geological display,
or the towering redwoods of Yosemite National Park. A drive along the picturesque coastline from Los
Angeles to San Francisco is also a must.
Anaheim
You willl win the hearts of your children with a trip
to Disneyland - meet Mickey, Donald and the crew in
laid-back Anaheim. One of the neatest cities you will
visit, a reflection of the ever so pretty pastel coloured
streets of Disneyland, it’s a great base for daytrips.
Explore the surrounding countryside and surf cities such
as Huntington and Laguna, both with great beaches and
a wealth of tempting eateries. For shoppers, visit the
South Coast Plaza.
Los Angeles
A bustling mix of culture, community and cuisine,
Los Angeles is yours to grab with both hands. Here,
macrobiotic cafes sit beside old school delis, ramshackle
markets wobble near gleaming malls, and palm trees
shade celebrity palaces. Anything goes and you can shop,
hike, surf and party to your heart’s content. Give your
credit card a workout on Rodeo Drive - one of the most
fashionable streets on any strip, pretend you’re a movie
star during a trip to Universal Studios, unpack a picnic on
the golden sands of Malibu or sit shoulder to shoulder
with celebrities at the hippest restaurants in town. While
you wait for your meal, watch the continuous parade of
passersby - all with somewhere to go and, no doubt, some
important Hollywood producer to meet.
Regional California
Lie back on a banana lounge, don a pair of oversized
sunglasses and enjoy some essential California dreaming
in Palm Springs. Home to the Hollywood elite, this desert
oasis is a two-hour drive from the bustle of Los Angeles
and is treasured for its fresh mountain air, endless blue
skies and forest-clad mountains.
Yosemite National Park
Be awestruck by unparalleled splendor at Yosemite
National Park, 4-5 hours drive from San Francisco. This
1200 square mile world heritage site packs in so much
jaw-dropping beauty. From the hulking presence of El
Capitan to the drenching mists of Yosemite Falls, the
gemstone lakes of the high country and the giant sequoias
of Wawona - you’ll be guaranteed memories to sustain
a lifetime.
San Francisco
San Francisco days are best spent sunning by the bay and
eating lavish seafood meals. This sophisticated harbour
side city is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz
Island, hill-climbing cable cars, and a population of free
thinkers, crafty inventors, star chefs and lyrical poets. Catch
a ferry to the arty suburb of Sausalito and grab an organic
coffee, jump a cable car and admire the city’s unique
architecture, feel the gravity of imprisonment in Alcatraz,
shop in fashionable Union Square, or spend a few nights
in the Napa Valley and watch the earth swallow the sun as
you sample the region’s finest wines.
San Diego
With 70 miles of coastline and a distinctly Mexican flavour,
San Diego occupies a gorgeously mellow slice of the West
Coast. Beyond the sun and sand, it has two of the best
zoos, one of the country’s largest urban parks, a collection
of fine museums and theaters, a humming night life,
excellent accommodation and food for all budgets, and
hiking, hang gliding and scuba diving. North of the city, a
series of seaside towns attract surfers and retirees while
inland from the city, desert-like valleys, fragrant with
orange blossoms in spring, acquiesce to pine-covered
mountains and then to seemingly endless desert.
Seattle
Watching the flying fish at Pike Place Market early in the
morning or visiting the Space Needle on a cloudless day are
two popular pursuits in Seattle, also known as the Emerald
City, a reference to the lush evergreen forests of the area.
America’s northernmost major city, Seattle is flanked
by the cool, clear waters of Puget Sound and towering
mountains. This raw natural beauty is the backdrop to a
sophisticated city with a thriving arts and cultural scene attend a ballet, an opera, the theatre or a festival during
your stay. Live music is also a mainstay - Seattle is the
birthplace of Nirvana, and if you’re game for a bar crawl,
visit Georgetown. Art-lovers can attend an opening at an
edgy Belltown gallery. Seattle is also a great destination
for families, visit the Seattle Children’s Theater, the
Children’s Museum and the Seattle International
Children’s Festival.
Las Vegas
Emptying your wallet never felt so good. Las Vegas is
famous for its bright lights, razzle dazzle and big city
themed casinos - you’ll see pyramids, Venetian canals and
even the Eiffel Tower. Before you empty your pockets,
spend an evening at an extravagant Vegas show, followed
by a relaxing drink looking over the lights of the city. Mid
morning take a stroll down to the Bellagio, then jump on
the free shuttle bus to the glamorous Liberace Museum,
a surreal, truly Vegas, sequined bonanza. A magnet
for couples getting married, America’s fastest-growing
metropolis is also child friendly, many hotels and resorts
have facilities specially designed for kids. Don’t forget to
take a whirl out to the Grand Canyon.
Arizona
Arizona is a state of cowboys, cacti canyons and sandy
deserts. From its bootstraps up it has some of the most
incredible natural wonders - the spires of Monument
Valley, the red rocks of Sedona and the plunging cliffs of
the Grand Canyon. Explore all this raw beauty on foot, by
white water raft or in true cowboy style, on horseback. If
softer adventures are more your style, tee off at Scottsdale
golf course or study the fine architecture of the college
towns of Tucson and Flagstaff. Whatever your taste,
Arizona satisfies.

LOS ANGELES
Santa Monica
Los Angeles
Given its lively atmosphere, enviable coastal location and
subtropical climate it’s no surprise Los Angeles, Spanish for
‘The Angels’, is America’s second largest city. The entertainment
capital of the country, LA is home to celebrities - jump aboard
a tour of the stars’ homes, glamorous boulevards, upmarket
eateries, hip bars and golden sand beaches. In LA, high fashion
and yoga go hand in hand, macrobiotic is a way of life and
Venice is a beach famous for muscle men. Whether joining the
locals for a picnic and a concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl
or exploring LA’s ‘wild’ side on a trek through the Santa Monica
Mountains, you won’t want to miss a minute.

or West Hollywo
Los Angeles’ creative set call West Hollywood home - you’ll
find a high concentration of musicians, designers, chefs and
actors here. The city reflects this with an abundance of chic
clothing boutiques, interior design shops, restaurants and
antique stores. Be sure to visit some of West Hollywood’s
famous landmarks - Sunset Strip, famous for its nightlife,
popular celebrity hotel haunts such as the Chateau Marmont
and the Mondrian, legendary music venues such as the House
of Blues, Whisky a Go Go, The Troubadour, The Roxy Theater
BOE7JQFS3PPNBOEUIFVQSPBSJPVT$PNFEZ4UPSF'PS
shopping, make your way to Sunset Plaza.
Downtown
Hollywood
If Downtown LA is the city’s commercial heart, the art and
culture found here are its soul. For modern art visit the
Museum of Neon Art, for history push open the doors of
the California African American Museum, and for delicious
wontons or sushi, eat in China Town or Little Tokyo.
During summertime, the California Plaza is the best venue
for outdoor concerts while historic Olvera Street has a
fabulous open market.
Hollywood, or Tinseltown as it’s commonly known, is a city
PGESFBNT7JTJUUIF,PEBL5IFBUFSIPNFPGUIF"DBEFNZ
Awards, and imagine yourself accepting an Oscar, or stroll
Hollywood Boulevard and picture your name etched into
a star on the Walk of Fame. The Hollywood and Highlands
complex, now the heart of Hollywood – much of the movie
industry has dispersed into surrounding areas – houses a
great range of shops, cinemas, restaurants, nightclubs and
MJWFCSPBEDBTUTUVEJPTBTXFMMBTUIF,PEBL5IFBUSF7JTJU
Tinseltown and make your dreams a reality.
What to do
in
Century City
If you have money to burn, head to Century City – the
main drawcard here is the shopping mall, one of the
major retail centres in Los Angeles. As well as designer
boutiques you’ll find a range of diverse dining options and
if you have had no luck star spotting on the street, pop
into a cinema here to get your fix. You will also find Santa
Monica Boulevard, the Avenue of the Stars, MGM Tower,
the Century Plaza Hotel and Century Plaza Towers in this
glitzy part of town.
Beverly Hills
The official hobnobbing headquarters of the Hollywood
industry elite, Beverly Hills is as revered in LA as the
countless Hollywood legends that have lived here (and
still do). Luxury cars, chic restaurants and shopping define
this expensive neighbourhood, cruise down Rodeo Drive
and you will find Chanel, Gucci and Cartier. But it’s not all
designer frocks and diamonds here - join in the frivolity
of a fun family day or free concert in the park and shop at
the popular farmers’ market. Beverly Hills has the charm
to seduce the power players of Hollywood, beware, she’ll
likely get you too.
Santa Monica and LA beaches
With its golden sand, tropical palm trees and blueberrycoloured water, Santa Monica Beach is a haven for fun-inthe-sun fans. This affluent city in northern Los Angeles has
much to offer - take a turn along the historic Santa Monica
Pier and admire the colourful carriages on the spinning
carousel, indulge in fine food at the farmers’ market, visit the
aquarium, twirl at the annual Twilight Dance Series, or sway
to the music of the Main Street Summer Soulstice Festival. A
great family destination, the city flicks a switch at night and
becomes a partygoer’s delight. Enjoy the ride.
%POUNJTT7FOJDF#FBDI4USPMMUIFCPBSEXBMLQBTU.VTDMF
Beach, complete with gymnastic rings and chin-up bars
embedded in the sand, and watch bulging bodybuilders
sweat it out under the sun. See the NBA hopefuls sinking
baskets in a game of ‘streetball’, and enjoy the boardwalk
sideshows, artists, musicians, street performers, acrobats,
magicians, comics, painters and sculptors. And if you
grow weary of all this lively activity, spread out your beach
towel and enjoy the waves of the Pacific Ocean as it meets
the shore.
Marina Del Rey is the place for water sports. Hire a sailboat,
kayak, jet ski or paddleboard and explore the 12 acre lagoon
of Marina Beach. Perfect for families, it includes playground
equipment, sheltered picnic tables and no surf. After dark
enjoy live jazz aboard a harbour cruise or head to the Marriott
Hotel’s year-round outdoor lounge for a non-stop vibe.
Romantics should try a cruise through the marina on a 10
metre Italian gondola, complete with pillows, music, lamps
and gondolier.
Head to Huntington Beach and absorb the surfing culture of
the Californian coast. Nicknamed Surf City, the town is the
surf capital of the nation and its history is both revealed and
revered at the International Surfing Museum. When the surf’s
flat along the 13.7 kilometre stretch of beach, take a stroll on
the town’s impressive pier, its concrete pillars plunging into
the Pacific. In June, join the annual 1.1 kilometre Huntington
Beach Pier Swim or take the family to Surf City Nights – a
downtown street fair held every Tuesday night that includes
a farmers’ market, food, children’s rides and entertainment.
Long Beach’s eight kilometres of shoreline is heaven
for water lovers. Try your hand at surfing, stow away to
beautiful Catalina Island, a short boat ride away, or board
the legendary Queen Mary, you can even spend a night in
an original First Class Stateroom. The southernmost beach
city of Los Angeles, Long Beach hums to the sounds of
lively restaurants, cultural events, music festivals, fantastic
shopping and a great nightlife.
,OPXOBTUIFTFBGPPEDBQJUBMPG4PVUIFSO$BMJGPSOJB3FEPOEP
Beach is a buzz with restaurants serving up the freshest catch.
Eleven kilometres south of Los Angeles airport, it’s the ideal
escape from the city’s hustle - relax with a stroll on the beach,
a lazy shopping trip or a sunny siesta.
Pasadena
Best known as the host of the annual Tournament of Roses
Parade and Rose Bowl football game, Pasadena is a pretty
enclave of New Orleans style buildings, fine dining and
shopping - start at Green Street and enjoy the art galleries.

Lake Tahoe
Regional California
California – the name has been
synonymous with fame and fortune
since the gold rush of the 1880’s. Today
it evokes images of bronzed bodies,
golden beaches, Hollywood and
Disneyland Resort. But there is so much
more to this state; it is a place of natural
wonders and breathtaking beauty, just
a short drive from Los Angeles and
San Francisco.
Sarah says...
From beaches in the west to ski fields
in the east, vineyards in the north to
deserts in the south… California has it all.
The best way to experience this amazing
state is to drive the open road! It’s easy,
safe and you may run into a celebrity or
two along the way!
PALM SPRINGS
DEATH VALLEY
LAKE TAHOE
Majestic mountains and miles of incredible bright, blue year round
sky are the backdrop of the resort town of Palm Springs. People
flock to this sunny city to play golf (there are 116 courses) and
tennis and enjoy the desert climate. Relaxation is the main aim
here; you can wine, dine, sit by the pool or indulge in a blissful
range of spa treatments.
While the name evokes all that’s harsh, hot and hellish about
the desert, you’ll find an endless wonderland of rugged canyons,
glimmering saltpans, steaming hot springs, rare wildlife and
undisturbed wilderness to explore here. Death Valley is the lowest,
driest spot in California and one of the hottest places on Earth.
It’s a unique adventure.

Shimmering softly in shades of blue and green, Lake Tahoe
straddles the California-Nevada state line and is one of the most
beautiful lakes in America and also its second deepest with an
average depth of 300 plus metres. The sun shines here three out
of four days of the year, so it’s ideal for outdoor activities including
swimming, boating, kayaking and windsurfing during summer.
Winter delivers dumps of snow, so you can hit the slopes at more
than a dozen ski resorts. The nightlife’s also great and the dining
options plentiful.

Visit this famous spot and say hello to a sea lion or three,
lazing on Pier 39. Home to delicious dining, shopping, hotels
and endless entertainment opportunities, including an old
fashioned carousel, buskers and some intriguing museums,
the Wharf’s a great place to start your San Francisco
experience. As the home of San Francisco’s fishing fleet,
the wharf remains the centre of the city’s historic fishing
industry and along ‘Fish Alley’ you will meet fishermen still
hard at work. The area is also the launching point for bay
cruises and charters. It’s the perfect place to try some of San
Fran’s favourites – clam chowder (served in a sourdough
bread bowl), fresh crab and mouth-watering Ghirardelli
Square chocolates.

Napa Valley
Home to the busiest areas of foot traffic during the early
20th century, when the city’s seaport was at its busiest
and before the construction of the Bay Bridge. The bay side
street of Embarcadero is now a landscaped walkway leading
to a retro brick ballpark that serves you gourmet hotdogs.
The historic Ferry Building houses the fantastic Farmers
Market, offering a variety of restaurants, cafes and shops.
This vibrant street scene has become a magnet for foodies
and is a great base for exploring San Fran on foot.
Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy the
breathtaking scenery all the way to the Napa Valley. Here,
rolling hills are dotted with vineyards. Whether you’re wine
tasting, dining at restaurants, pampering yourself with
a mud bath, or just enjoying your stay at a quaint bed &
breakfast, hotel or resort, the Napa Valley is your spot of
heaven on Earth.
