Director’s Corner
Hi everyone, the weather has started to get better and many of us are beginning to get miles on our
bikes. Our first Friday Nighter brought 16 members out for a quiet ride through Maclay and up Victor Point
Rd to Silverton. The ride was good even if I did manage to do a Jane and find a gravel road. Not one bike
had to ride on gravel however, as the old “turn around” hand signal worked just fine.
Watch your News Group email for reminders on upcoming rides. If you are not receiving News
Group emails let Bill or I know and we will set you up.
We will need to conduct some Chapter business in May’s meeting that will affect all members. If
you miss the May meeting, I hope this will explain well enough for you to understand our situation.
A little background information. For the past several years, the Elk’s have given us free monthly use
of their meeting room. This was due to the fact that many of our Chapter are also members of The Elk’s,
and we have Chapter members that donate to the Elk’s as well as volunteer to help them in their yearly
Christmas box program. Also, the dinner provided to us on meeting night as well as the bartender in our
meeting room has been profitable for the Elk’s, so it was a decent money maker for them as well.
As of last month the Elks have decided to have all groups that use their facilities pay a rental fee for
the use of that meeting room. In addition, if a bartender is used, as is the case in our situation, then a fee
for the bartender will also be issued to the group. These new fees were decided upon by the Elk’s board,
primarily due to, comparing to years past, the general decreasing of income and volunteers to the Elks
programs through donations of money and time. Also, it was felt the profit resulting from the bartender’s
time was not sufficient in allowing the bartender to continue without payment for that service.
Therefore, effective with our June meeting a charge (most likely in the $150 to $200 range) per
night plus $54.00 for the Bartender will be charged to our Chapter if we use their facility. That is almost
$2500 per year for a meeting space. I did ask their Exalted Ruler if he would consider taking to their board
a proposal giving us use of the facility for the remainder of this year at no charge and give us time to decide what we wanted to do.
This additional expense is not covered in our Chapter budget and basically would require a complete reorganization of our Chapter expenses for the year, resulting in lost free activities, or increased fund
raisers.
We do however, have the Eagles facility, located on the opposite side of the Salem airport, offering
to provide us with a nice meeting room, sound system, food, and beverages, as well as a little storage area
also on the second Tuesday night of the month, and this is ours for the taking if we choose.
Discussion on this issue will be done at the next board and general meeting and a chapter decision
will be voted by the Chapter at our May 13th meeting.
Ride Safe, and see you on the road!

CURRENT HARLEY: 01 SuperGlide
YOUR FIRST HARLEY: 1996 Sportster
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START RIDING? When I was in the 3rd grade, I had a “Hiawatha Doodlebug” Cool
uh!
LONGEST TRIP:
Our trip thru Canada with Dave and Patty. This was also one of my favorite trips. We
rode in all kinds of terrain, weather, saw all types of animals, tho we never did see any dinosaurs. We had
rode to Eastend Alberta to see the Dinosaurs but it was raining too hard, they all took cover and we missed
them. We then rode to the Sturgis located in Saskatchewan. This town was so small that we went to the
post office, found the local postmistress, who was also President of the Chamber of Commerce. We then
proceeded to climb in the back of her pickup, drove to the Chamber building and she gave us all Sturgis
North Pins and T-shirts.
MOST MEMORABLE TRIP: The thing about riding Harley’s is that all my trips have created great memories.
YOUR FIRST LARGE CHAPTER RIDE: My first large Chapter ride was a Friday nighter.

CURRENT HARLEY: ’07 Deluxe
YOUR FIRST HARLEY (WHEN AND WHAT) 883 Sportster - chain drive - rode it all the way to Sturgis and back

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START RIDING? I started riding in 1979.. I bought a 1966 Honda 160 Scrambler.
LONGEST TRIP: I can’t remember if our trip to Minnesota or the trip to Sturgis Canada was the longest.
MOST MEMBORABLE TRIP: With my lousy memory it’s surprising that I can remember any of our trips!
They have all been fun. Some more memorable in different ways…..You know rain…. heat (about a million
degrees). friends that you travel with…………. They are all memorable and will give us great things to talk
about when we are REALLY old. A couple of year’s back we had decided to ride down thru the Napa Valley.
One night while sitting around looking at a map, I noticed the Hearst Castle. I had always wanted to check
it out… and besides, it only showed about an inch on the map.. I mean really, how far could that be????
Well 500 miles later, thru San Francisco, San Jose and all kinds of fun traffic, you get the picture…. I’m
sure I’ll never live it down…………… Thank you Dave!!…. Gee, I keep hearing something about booking our
tour too early in the day, then looking at our watches, realizing how far we had to go in what amount of
time. Something about not enough time vs mileage and road conditions to make it. (We made it, no tickets
with 15 minutes to spare! - follow Patty sometime!!!???) … What a wonderful tour that was… we enjoyed it
so much, we’ve gone back for the 2nd tour…
YOUR FIRST LARGE CHAPTER RIDE: My first large chapter ride had to have been a big Friday nighter. I remember riding that sportster with all those big bikes and all those guys. I was scared spitless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Salem HOG Poker Run Planning
It is that time again; time to start planning the Poker Run for August 3. We had our first planning
meeting March 29th and the volunteer list has started. There will be opportunities to sign up to help at
the chapter meeting in April. All chapter members need to be involved in obtaining donations for the raffle
prizes and dispersing fliers to advertise the event. A letter will soon be available to give to each business
supplying prizes.
The ending site is still up in the air, but we are looking at ending at the Salem Elks, as well as several
other places. We will be starting from the dealership and Wilsonville again.
We are looking for vendors for our event, so if you have a business or know of a business that would like to
set up a booth, let the Vendor Committee know. And speaking of committees, again, we need volunteers
for a lot of things. Sign up at the chapter meeting or email Sue Rohde.

Benefits for Harley Riders
Best Western International
Source: sunherald.com
PHOENIX - Bikers Can Rest Their Harley-Davidson(R) Motorcycles at more Than 1,000 Best Western Hotels in the U.S. and
Canada~ Best Western’s ‘rider-friendly’ hotels offer designated parking, wash stations and wipe-down towels.
More than 1,000 Best Western hotels in the United States and Canada have been identified as “rider-friendly,” the company announced today, offering motorcycle riders wipe-down towels at check in and access to a wash station at no additional
cost. In addition, some properties offer designated parking, tar remover, sunscreen and lip balm.
The hotel chain’s commitment to designating participating hotels as “rider-friendly” is part of a multi-year agreement
between Best Western and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company to bring travel benefits to Harley-Davidson enthusiasts.
“Best Western recognizes that Harley-Davidson and motorcycle enthusiasts have unique needs when on the road, and
we’re committed to providing them with amenities that make their rides more enjoyable,” said Dorothy Dowling, Best Western’s
senior vice president of marketing and sales. “We’re thrilled that more than 1,000 Best Western hotels are ‘rider-friendly,’ and
we will add to this total throughout the year.”
Harley(R) riders can also register for the Gold Crown Club International Ride Rewards(TM) program, a free, speciallythemed rewards program for Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. Harley-Davidson(R) owners or enthusiasts can register by going to
http://www.bwrider.com. Once registered online as Ride Rewards members, Harley-Davidson(R) riders will earn 10 points for every U.S. dollar (or Canadian equivalent) spent on qualified room rates, or 250 airline miles per qualified stay, at any of the 4,000
Best Western hotels worldwide, including the 1,000 “rider-friendly” properties in North America. By joining Best Western’s Gold
Crown Club International Ride Rewards loyalty program online, Harley-Davidson enthusiasts will automatically receive Gold Elite
status, which includes 10 percent bonus points on every Best Western stay and the ability to purchase points for award redemption, along with other signature benefits.
As a complement to Ride Rewards, Best Western will also serve as a preferred hotel chain for Harley-Davidson’s interactive Web application “Ride Planner,” found at http://www.harley-davidson.com/experience. Using Microsoft(R) Virtual Earth(TM)
technology, the application maps out a variety of picturesque U.S. “Great Roads” and shows Best Western hotels and HarleyDavidson (R) dealerships along the way. Each property listing features hotel descriptions along with a directory of services and
amenities. A 10 percent savings is available to customers who book their Best Western reservations through this Web site, or
by calling 1-888-224-BIKE.
For more information on the Ride Rewards(TM) program, or to search for Best Western’s “rider-friendly” hotels, visit

Salem HOG Friday Nighters
Remember the Friday nighters. This is a good way to celebrate the end of the week and enjoy cruise
in the countryside with other Salem HOG members and friends. Our first Friday Night ride left the Salem
H-D dealership at 6:30 pm sharp. We headed down Fisher Rd and wound our way to Macleay Road where
we continued through Macleay, up to Victor Point, and by way of Drift Creek Road to Silverton.
We ate an excellent Mexican dinner at El Toros in Silverton though the wait staff appeared a bit
baffled at serving more than four people at a table.
Our next Friday Nighter on May 9th will end up in Donald at the Donald Cafe. Even if a location isn’t
posted, show up anyway. You are guaranteed a fun ride with a good group of people.

This Year’s Charity – Liberty House
As we know, the chapter voted for what charity will be receiving our help this year. Liberty House will continue to get our support this year. This writing is just to recap about this worthy program. Liberty House is special
place for children to come when adults are concerned that they may have been hurt by sexual abuse, physical abuse
or neglect. Nearly 90% of these cases are from sexual abuse. It is a neutral child abuse assessment center specially
tailored for children where they receive a head–to-toe check-up and a care fully designed interview in an environment for kids. They are partnered with medical services, child welfare (DHS), and law enforcement to lessen the
impact on the child. Liberty House is Marion County’s only child abuse assessment center and also serves part of
Polk County. Liberty House opened with doors in 1999 to fill the void in the community. The majority of their budget
is from individuals, businesses and private foundations.
I want to share what brought my attention to Liberty House about a year ago. I was attending a seminar on
child sexual abuse here in Salem. At the end, all the presenters from different services agencies and law enforcement said they could not have the success in helping the children without Liberty House and pointed to their representative. I thought ‘Wow, what a very strong statement.’
This is the quoted thank you from Ms. Marion Denard of Liberty House for our last year’s donation. “Liberty
House serves some of our community’s most vulnerable children when there are concerns they’ve been hurt by
abuse or neglect. We couldn’t do what we do for children without support like yours – thank you.”
Live to Ride ~ Ride to Eat
Even tho the weather has not been the greatest to get out there and ride, I still like to store up ideas and
places to go for when we finally do get that beautiful Northwest summer that we enjoy so much.
If you’re looking for a nice day ride and place to eat, head on over to the Farger Lake Inn located amongst the
beautiful mountainous roads in the Southwest area of Washington.
Our particular ride took us north to Woodland, east along the winding and scenic Lewis River on Hwy.
503. Hwy. 503, the road of many names, also known as the Lewis River Hwy. and the Fargher Lake Hwy. We
continued on up and around Lake Merwin, thru Yale and then headed south to Chelatchie, thru Amboy and on
into Fargher Lake. What a beautiful forested area, full of trees and curvy paved roads. Well worth the journey.
Fargher Lake Inn is located on the East side of the highway. They are known for their steaks and great
selection of cold beer. It is host to many biker events and is an adventure in itself just looking at all of the
memorabilia on the walls.
With our hunger and thirst pains well satisfied, we backtracked back through Chelatchie and headed towards
Cougar, Washington. This is a neat town and would be fun to spend some time in, possibly a great location
for another one nite stand! We noticed that they had campgrounds, cabins and RV Park accommodations. We
followed the paved Forest Service Road # 90 around Swift Reservoir. Just past the Reservoir, we turned right
onto Curly Creek Road (Forest Service Road #51) to connect with Meadow Creek Road which is also called
Wind River Road (Forest Service Road #30). From there, we headed south on Wind River Road to the city of
Carson, Washington. What a great ride this was as we found all of these roads paved with many nice curves,
and lots of scenery.
Here’s to another great ride where the journey and the destination were both enjoyable! Remember
if you have that special place in your neighborhood where it might of been the great ride getting there, the
waiter or waitress that made the meal, the great food, or a combination of all, that made this a ride a ride to
remember and you would like to share it with others, please send an article to Bob and let us all hear about it!
Happy winding paved roads and good eats to you!

2008 Calendars
It is time once again to get ready for the
new year. What better way to get ready to ring it
in than with the new Salem HOG 2008 Calendar.
While using the new calendar to set plans for new
rides, you can be looking at those pictures of the
great events and folks from 2007.
To help expedite the purchase and delivery
of the calendars by the December meeting, we are
taking pre-orders. Your order can be made at the
November meeting or by contacting Keith Harris.
The cost should be about the same as last year
(about $10), details to follow.
Don’t wait; get your order in soon. There
will be a limited number of calendars available.

There are three ways for you to get the newsletter: 1) Pick it up at the monthly meeting, 2) See the full color version
on the web site, and 3) if you can’t do either of the previous, it can be mailed to you. If you would like it mailed, contact the newsletter editor with your mailing information (Bob Fanshier - [email protected] - 503-580-6988)
