Ms. Patricia L. Caruso (‘75)
Commencement Speaker
Patricia Caruso of Sault Ste. Marie, a 1975 alumnus of Lake Superior
State University, is director of the Michigan Department of Corrections.
A longtime Laker enthusiast, Caruso serves on the LSSU
Foundation’s board of directors and was part of the steering committee
for the Gem of the North project to expand Taffy Abel Arena. She was
the recipient of the University’s Outstanding Alumna Award in 1997.
Caruso was selected as MDOC director in July 2003, less than one
year after being promoted to deputy director. She is the first woman to
head the department of 17,000 employees.
Caruso has been with the Department of Corrections for 17 years,
starting as assistant business manager at Kinross Correctional Facility.
She was promoted to business manager at Hiawatha Temporary
Correctional Facility in September 1988, then to correctional facility
manager for the Chippewa Correctional Facilities in 1990. In 1991, she
became warden of the Chippewa Correctional Facilities.
For five years before she began her career with the Department of
Corrections, Caruso was controller for Chippewa County. She served
as a member of the War Memorial Hospital board of trustees and is a
past president of the Chippewa County United Way board of directors.
Caruso is a member of the American Corrections Association and
has served on the ACA Congress Planning Council. She has also been
an officer with the North American Association of Wardens and
Superintendents.
A graduate of Rudyard High School, Caruso holds a bachelor’s
degree in political science and sociology from LSSU as well as a
master’s degree in comprehensive occupational education from the
University of Michigan.
She and her husband, Stan, are the parents of two grown children,
Sarah and Timothy.

Mr. Robert R. Arfstrom P.D.
Honorary Doctorate
Robert Arfstrom, longtime friend of Lake Superior State University, is
president and CEO of Arfstrom Pharmacies, Inc., which includes Arfstrom
Pharmacies, Arfstrom Medical Equipment and Supplies, The Frozen North
ice cream shop, The Hub medical uniforms and gifts, Great Lakes Art
Gallery and Arfstrom Camera and Photo. The Traverse City native moved
to the Sault in 1971 to work for the pharmacy that he would eventually see
expanded through the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
His willingness to assist LSSU is well known and he was recognized for
his efforts in 1994 when he was named LSSU Distinguished Citizen. He is a
former member of the LSSU Board of Trustees and the LSSU Foundation's
board of directors, and served as an adjunct professor of pharmacology
over a period of 26 years. A Laker athletic fan, he was chairman of the Gem
of the North committee to expand Taffy Abel Ice Arena and has been a
member of the Laker Club since its inception in 1976. He was on the advisory committee for the LSSU Wellness CARE Center from 1989-98 and has
been a keynote speaker more than once at LSSU's Nursing Convocation.
Arfstrom is active in the community, also. He has served on a variety of
community boards and advisory panels, including: Famous Soo Locks
Boat Tours, Sault Ste. Marie Project Pride, Downtown Development
Association, Sault Tribe Economic Development Commission, Chippewa
County Health Department's Home Health Committee, Central Child Care
Center's board of directors, and War Memorial Hospital Building Task
Force and Physicians Recruitment Committee. He has served on the
governing boards of several area banks and is chairman of the board of
Old Mission Bancorp, Inc.
Arfstrom is a member of the Sault Rotary Club, Sault Shrine Club,
Bethel Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, Elks Lodge, Upper Peninsula
Pharmacists Association, Michigan Pharmacists Association, National
Community Pharmacists Association and Central United Methodist
Church.
His community and business endeavors have led to many awards,
including the Michigan Small Business Person of the Year, Sault Ste. Marie
Business Person of the Year, Rotarian of the Year, Elks Lodge 552 Citizen of
the Year, National Award for Service to Pharmacy and the Community and
the Merck Award for Outstanding Contributions to Pharmacy.
Arfstrom holds a degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University. He
and his wife, Bonnie, have two children, James and Mary.

Mr. Robert A. Pritzker
Honorary Doctorate
Robert A. Pritzker is president and chief executive officer of Colson
Associates, Inc.; Acumed LLC; MicroAire Surgical Instruments LLC,
OsteoMed LP and Precision Edge Surgical Products Company LLC.
These companies principally manufacture casters and medical devices
worldwide. Together they have annual sales of $430 million and employ
about 2,600 people.
Pritzker’s professional life has been in industrial management. In
1953, he co-founded The Marmon Group starting with Colson Casters,
manufacturers of industrial and institutional casters and wheeled
equipment. Under his leadership as president and CEO, The Marmon
Group had grown from $3.5 million in revenues to $6.5 billion in 2001,
making it the 19th largest private company in the U.S. In 2002, he
started Colson Associates.
Pritzker received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from
Illinois Institute of Technology in 1946. He also attended California
Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois and Case Institute of
Technology.
He is chairman of the board of trustees of Illinois Institute of
Technology, where he is the recipient of the honorary degree of doctor of
humane letters and science. He was a professorial lecturer on business
management at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
He was an associate fellow at Templeton College, Oxford University and
former visiting professor of the engineering faculty at Oxford University.
He is past chairman of the board of trustees of Chicago’s Field Museum
of Natural History, serves on the boards of American Enterprise
Institute, Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is a life
trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Rush University
Medical Center and is an honorary director of the Lincoln Park
Zoological Society. He is a councilor and member of the National
Academy of Engineering. He is former chairman of the National
Association of Manufacturers.
Pritzker and his wife, Mayari Pritzker Ph.D., live in Chicago.

Philip L. Ellison
Student Respondent
This year’s student respondent, Philip Ellison of Hemlock, Mich.,
immersed himself in the Lake State experience while completing his
degrees in business administration and personal computer specialty in
three and a half years.
Ellison served on the residential life staff for three years and was
also a member of the LSSU web team throughout his time at LSSU.
Active with student assembly, he served as chief justice of the Student
Judiciary Board and a term as secretary of the Discretionary Funding
Committee. He was known for his show on WLSO, the student radio
station.
Ellison volunteered in his community as a member of the Hemlock
Service Advisory Learning Community. He has also served as a grant
reviewer for the State of Michigan Board of Education. For his accomplishments on campus and community, Ellison was honored as the
male freshman of the year in 2002, junior of the year in 2004 and in 2003
was the recipient of the LSSU Judge James Fenlon Award for Student
Leadership.
The December 2004 graduate is pursuing a master’s degree in
business administration from Central Michigan University. He also
owns and operates Quagmire Solutions, a web service company that
provides web-based services for small businesses.

Academic Attire
The use of academic dress stems from costumes used in universities
of the 14th and 15th centuries, particularly at Oxford and Cambridge in
England. Used in the United States from colonial times, the regalia was
standardized by an intercollegiate code in 1895.
Three types of gowns are indicated by the code. The baccalaureate
gown has long pointed sleeves. A light grey version of this gown is
commonly used for associate degrees. The master’s gown has long
closed sleeves with the arc of a circle near the bottom. The doctoral
gown has full bell-shaped sleeves with three velvet bars and velvet
panels down the center front of the gown.
Hoods vary in size and shape. They are lined in the official academic
colors of the institution conferring the degree. A chevron is used to
introduce a second color. Colored velvet trims the hood and indicates
the subject to which the degree pertains.
The University president wears a large medallion donned only on
ceremonial occasions. That medallion, cast in bronze, is inscribed with
the founding date of the University, its name and the state seal.
At Lake Superior State University, it is customary to identify the
candidates graduating by tassels of the official color appropriate to the
subject of study.

Degree candidates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until
the moment the degree is conferred.
Honor Song
“Honor Songs” were given to us so we could honor each other as
brothers and sisters and to honor all of creation. The spirit of the drum
is for the people, the heartbeat of Mother Earth, and a gift from the
Creator. These songs lend us support and help us get through trying
times. Then, we truly remember who we are.
Commencement Marshal
The marshal, who leads and directs the ceremony, is the recipient of the
previous year’s Distinguished Teaching Award. The marshal this year is
Dr. Richard T. Conboy, Professor of Political Science. He bears the
ceremonial sash and the University mace that serves as a symbol of
authority.
