TournamentSchedule
Date
James Humphreys from Tradewise congratulates the winner of The 2015 Tradewise Gibraltar
Masters, Hikaru Nakamura.
GIBRALTAR MASTERS
Eligibility: open to all. The first prize may not be
shared. All other prizes will be shared where players
have the same score (except the Women’s First
Prize).
Rate of play: 40 moves in 100 minutes plus 20
moves in 50 minutes plus 15 minutes for all
remaining moves with 30 seconds per move added
from the start.
In the event of a tie for first place, there will be a
speed play-off. If there are four or fewer players
tied for first place, there will be a speed knockout play-off for the first prize of £20,000. If three
players tie for first place, the player with the highest
performance rating will be seeded directly into
the Final of the Play-Off; the other two players will
contest the Semi-Final. If more than four players
tie for first place, the four players with the highest
performance ratings will qualify for the play-off to
decide the first prize.
WOMEN’S AWARDS
If there is a tie for the top women’s prize, the tie is
resolved in favour of the woman with the highest
performance rating, who will receive the prize of
£15,000. All other prizes will not be subject to a
tiebreak and prize money other than the first prize
will be divided equally amongst the players.
MASTERS REGULATIONS
Important! Draws by mutual agreement in fewer
than 30 moves are not allowed. There must be no
pre-arranged or tacit agreements to draw games
of any length, by repetition or otherwise. Warning:
penalties may involve loss of prize money.
Players who wish to take up to two half-point byes in
rounds 1-7 of the Masters may do so, provided they
give adequate notice, but the second requested bye
makes a player ineligible for a prize. No player may
request a bye in the last three rounds.
MORNING EVENTS
Each of these is a 5-round Swiss. Rate of play: all the
moves in 110 minutes plus 10 seconds per move added
from the start. The games rarely last more than four hours.
Competitors can play in and win a prize in the Masters
as well as a morning event.
CHALLENGER TOURNAMENTS
Eligibility: players with FIDE ratings under 2250 or unrated.
AMATEUR TOURNAMENTS
Eligibility: players with FIDE ratings under 1900, players
without FIDE ratings who have a national rating under
1900 or ECF grade under 160. Players without any rating
must show evidence that they are not too strong for the
Amateur tournaments. The right is reserved to place
players in a Challenger tournament if thought unsuitable
for the Amateur. An outright winner of the first-week
Amateur tournament will be promoted to the second-week
Challenger tournament.
Evening Events will include master classes, pairs and
four player team blitz tournaments, and the Battle of the
Sexes. Details will appear on the tournament website.
All Masters Entrants:
It is strongly recommended that you do not make any
travel or accommodation arrangements until your
entry has been confirmed by the Caleta Hotel and
Festival Director Stuart Conquest.
The Opening Ceremony and drawing of lots will take
place at 20.30hrs on Monday 25th January 2016 in the
main restaurant.
Please note that Round 10 starts at 11.00hrs on the
final day (not at 15.00hrs as with rounds 1-9).
Master Classes
These are evening lectures by elite players. Games
or positions are analysed and questions taken from
the audience. There is no charge to attend. Master
Classes are also broadcast live over the internet.

GibraltarInternational Business Hub
Gibraltar has served as the gateway to the
Mediterranean for centuries.
A British Overseas Territory since 1713, Gibraltar not only benefits from a legal
system inherited from the United Kingdom, but is home to a unique mix of cultures
as a strategic meeting point of civilizations.
The Rock, as it is commonly known, is an economic powerhouse in its own right,
founded on financial services, e-commerce communications, maritime services and
tourism. Gibraltar is one of the simplest and safest places to establish and operate
a company in Europe, with more than 15,000 companies currently registered.
Gibraltar’s GDP grew by 10% per annum during the last 3 years, ranking it 3rd in
the world per capita for GDP.
Some 32,000 residents live within Gibraltar’s tiny 2.5 square-mile territory, but
the population swells by over a third every day as some 10,000 people cross the
border to go to work. Gibraltar has a jobless rate of 1.35%, in addition to a highly
educated, skilled and multilingual workforce, making it a great place to live and do
business.
Why Gibraltar?
Prime location
• Direct access to Europe and Africa, the Mediterranean Sea and the
North Atlantic Ocean.
• Able to distribute competitively price VAT free goods and services to the markets
of EU and Africa.
Booming economy
• GDP: $2.64 Billion; GDP growth 10.3%
• GDP per capita (PPP): $83,544
Low costs
• A quality, low-tax jurisdiction with a profit oriented capital base
• Benefits from EU membership
• Corporate tax rate: 10%
Demographics
• Total population: 32,194
• Annual visitor arrivals: 10,251,109

Chief Minister - Fabian Picardo
Gibraltar is a small nation with large aspirations and has built a progressive and
multi-cultural society which is at the same time an economic engine of growth in
the region.
In thirteen short years, the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival has grown from
relatively modest roots to become, as The Financial Times describes, “the strongest
and best-organised event of its kind in the world”. Its flagship event, the Masters,
has been voted not just the Best Open, but the best Chess Tournament in the World.
These plaudits are richly deserved and its organisers should be congratulated not
only on their vision but that year after year, they rise to the challenge of ensuring
that the Festival grows in stature while commensurate with that so does its support
and funding.
It is interesting to note that while the Festival was originally conceived to generate
more interest in chess locally, it was also hoped more tourism could be generated
during what is traditionally a quiet time of the year. Exceeding all expectations,
it is now one of the major events in our annual calendar of culture activities and
continues to engender friendship and cross-cultural relationships. This success
has in turn spawned a whole series of other festivals such as the annual Literary
Festival and the Jazz Festival to name but two. These in their own way also put
Gibraltar on the map and attract a huge amount of interest from around the world.
I urge you to visit our iconic Rock of Gibraltar, immerse yourself in an enjoyable
and memorable environment, sample the well-known hospitality for which we have
become famous and join this annual get-together of the ever-growing international
chess family.

Tradewise Insurance Company Limited has been
supporting chess in Gibraltar for almost as long as we
have been here on the Rock and we are incredibly proud
to have our name associated not only with this incredible
tournament but chess in general.
Gibtelecom has been involved with the Gibraltar Chess
Festival since the very beginning, initially as the lead
commercial sponsor and subsequently continuing to
power the technology that facilitates the tournament
reaching a growing global online audience.
With every year “The Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival”
due to the relentless effort from those behind the scenes,
manages to achieve the impossible by making each year
better than the last. We are a fortunate tournament as we
have and are indebted to many local commercial sponsors
as well as enjoying the support of our Government.
Gibtelecom has been streaming the chess commentary
and games since the tournament’s inception in 2002,
having been one of the pioneers of live commentary of the
main games over the internet with viewers able to interact
with Chess Grandmasters whilst the event is in progress.
Gibtelecom helps make it easy for the many chess

as they happen, from as far afield as Brazil, China,
Chess Federation
India, Russia and the USA. In fact, other tournaments in
various parts of the world have adopted the Gibraltar model for their own chess
broadcasting over recent years. The festival’s website www.gibraltarchesscongress.
com also provides millions of viewers with multimedia-rich content, including live
video streams and real-time feedback from the interactive chess boards.
As commercial partners to the festival and co-sponsors
for “The Day’s Play” we have learned how extremely
important it is that organisations like ours get involved in order to further chess
as a game, a sport. To believe as we do that the chess community is a worthy
area that commercial sponsors should focus on for the betterment of the game
and obviously for the public awareness and recognition all investing sponsors are
seeking to attract. For our part, Tradewise is doing more for chess.
In the UK we have introduced a private motor insurance scheme for the chess
community, www.tradewise64.com, a motor insurance policy with a cover twist
and a dedication to investing further in chess, the tournaments, the educational
advantages and the players and respectfully suggest to all organisations that the
chess community is an excellent place in which to invest in sponsorship and be
noticed, so come on Google!
Gibtelecom also sponsors “The Day’s Play”, a daily afternoon show available
online highlighting the latest stories, interviews and other special moments from
the festival. In addition, Gibtelecom also employs Grandmaster, Stuart Conquest,
as Gibraltar’s dedicated Community Chess Professional to further enhance and
promote chess throughout Gibraltar.
Gibtelecom is proud to be associated with what has become the cream of
international chess tournaments, with the event recently being voted as the world’s
best chess event by the Association of Chess Professionals.
