The isles of Greece We discover what is drawing Carrier clients back to this Mediterranean classic. Ever since Byron carved his name on Cape Sounion’s Doric columns and Gerard Durrell was bewitched by the lush hillsides of Corfu, as a nation we have had an enduring love affair with Greece. Our passion may have waivered in recent years; however Greece is back on our shortlist for 2013. Rather than responding to mass market demands for beach bargains, Greece has done the opposite. Along with rural tourism, luxury hotels are on the increase, such as Amanzo’e, which opened on the Peloponnese last July. Several museums are slated to open in 2013 and enogastronomic tourism is flourishing. Weather Summers are hot and sunny, with temperatures soaring into the late 30s during July and August. Benefitting from coastal breezes, islands are several degrees cooler. Spring and autumn are popular times to visit with typically eight hours sunshine a day and temperatures around 20C. Crete offers the longest beach season from mid-April until early November. Culinary Highlights Greek cuisine is varied, boasting mountain cheeses, delicious pastries, abundant fish dishes and herb-roasted meats. A hot spot for this summer is Santorini which celebrates its Year of Gastronomy. Expect wine tastings and culinary demonstrations to savour its 40 grape varieties and local produce including capers, fava beans and white aubergines. mainland. On the islands you will find the birthplace of Apollo at Delos (near Mykonos) and Crete’s Minoan palace at Knossos. The smaller discoveries you make along the way are equally impressive – from the well-preserved Nestor’s Palace on the Costa Navarino to the Italianate palazzi of Nafplio on the Peloponnese. Island Hopping Day trips from Athens are popular; a good choice is picturesque Hydra where donkeys follow cobbled streets down to the harbour. Volcanic Santorini with its blue-domed churches, the windmills of Venetian Mykonos and the Minoan palaces of Crete make the perfect three-centre trip. Island bases are also good to explore from. Zakynthos is the perfect springboard to visit Kefalonia, setting for Captain Correlli’s Mandolin. Where to Stay Family choices include Porto Zante on Zakythnos where villa living is combined with the services of a five star hotel and the all-suite and villa property of Domes of Elounda, Crete with its excellent beach club. Couples may prefer the spectacular Mystique, built into Santorini’s cliff face, the seclusion of Amanzo’e whose pool suites blend into the Peloponnese countryside or the privacy of the infinityedge pool suites at The Romanos, A Luxury Collection Resort on the unspoiled Costa Navarino. Historical Discoveries You are never far from reminders of Greece’s antique heritage. Ancient Athens, Agamemnon’s kingdom at Mycenae and the gymnasium of Olympia are ‘must sees’ on the HIDDEN TREASURE: The Italian restaurant at The Romanos makes the largest calzone pizza you have ever seen - it is unbelievable and perfect for sharing. 10 / Call our specialists on 0161 826 2584 or visit www.carrier.co.uk/magazine CARRIER: Talking points / THE RESIDENCE MALDIVES, GAAFU ALIFU ATOLL Although one of the most beautiful places on the planet in which to lie in the sun and feel the hot sand between your toes, it is below the surface of the azure ocean where many guests of The Residence get their thrills. Thought to be the deepest atoll in the world, virtually undiscovered, it promises a wealth of astonishing dive sites, vibrant reefs and lagoons, suitable for all levels of divers and passionate snorkellers. Measuring just 120 metres across at its widest point, the island’s waters attract an unparalleled array of marine life, from sponges and gorgons to snapper, trigger fish, parrot fish and oriental sweet lips. At Villingili Kandu, sharks are present in large numbers, or head out to the outer reef for an abundance of coral life. Giri and Thilas offer no fewer than ten dive sites from beginners to advanced, all of them rich in colourful corals and fish. Take your pick of incredible boat dives, wall dives, manta dives, shark dives, wreck dives and channel dives, or slip on your mask and snorkel to explore the small but vivid house reef. The crystal waters are also perfect, not only for complimentary non-motorised watersports but also for water skiing, jet skiing and island excursions. Furthermore, the resort is home to the Maldives’ first and only Spa by Clarins, its deck dedicated to meditation and yoga – an ideal way to unwind after an exhilarating dive. Naturally, fresh seafood is a speciality in the Fulhamaa restaurant. In reality however The Winelands have an enduring 300 year old winemaking tradition. A favourite of Napoleon’s, Cape wine even earned a mention in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility as a cure for a disappointed heart. Fanned by Atlantic sea breezes, a large number of cultivars including Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc flourish in the area’s Mediterranean microclimate. The oldest vineyards are those that were established in the Constantia Valley in 1685; characterised by its gabled whitewashed farmhouses that nestle amongst rows of vines in the shadow of dramatic mountain peaks. Delightfully compact, the Constantia Wine Route has just nine wineries to explore. None of them cater to bulk production, so wine tastings here are an individual experience. “BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYSIDE LOCATION, RELAXING FEEL AND DELICIOUS FOOD” – Jackie Elvey, Africa Sales Consultant A highlight of the route is Steenberg. A 17th century Cape Dutch farmhouse renovated into a luxury spa hotel with its own championship golf course, its 24 spacious rooms and suites are furnished with antiques. The hotel offers several different tasting settings; savour fine cuisine at Catharina’s restaurant, wine tasting and tapas at the stylish Bistro Sixteen82 or sparkling wines in the Gorgeous by Graham Beck wine bar. Guests can also join cellar tours or take a guided cycle ride through the vineyards to learn more about the wine estate’s vintages. A tranquil base from which to explore Cape Town, the city itself is just a 20 minute drive away. Unique beach experiences: JUMBY BAY, A ROSEWOOD RESORT, ANTIGUA Effortlessly combining barefoot elegance with colonial charm, Jumby Bay is an exclusive private island, two miles off the coast of Antigua. Favoured by international film stars and leading politicians alike, this is a place for true beachside indulgence. Covering a third of the island, the 40 rooms and suites are secret hideaways where guests enjoy outdoor hot tubs, rain showers, enclosed gardens and private pools. There are four different restaurants to enjoy, along with an open-air spa and fitness centre, in addition to numerous leisure activities including tennis, snorkelling and fun fishing trips. However it is the island’s three beaches - which are illuminated nightly with flaming tiki torches to light the way for an evening stroll - that are likely to be the highlight of your stay. A haven for naturalists, myriads of starfish are washed up onto the shores each morning. And eagle rays, blue pelicans and white egret call these waters their home. Fanned by Atlantic breezes, Pasture Bay Beach is one of the world’s best nesting sites for hawksbill turtles. Guests can join weekly turtle watches for glimpses of these rare creatures. Far from the lights of Antigua, it is also one of the best locations for stargazing together with Jumby Bay’s resident astronomer. Returning to the Caribbean side, the sapphire waters, thatched-roof bohios and hammocks slung in coconut trees on Jumby Beach make for some idyllic beach time. It’s also the venue for the weekly White Night seafood barbecue where the whole island gets together for music and dancing to the sounds of live steel bands. “ AS YOU APPROACH THE ISLAND BY BOAT, YOU ARE INSTANTLY MESMERISED BY THE ENDLESS WHITE SAND BEACH. The authentic wild west from classic cowboy country to luxury ranch experiences ARIZONA, UTAH, WYOMING & MONTANA Revel in the heart-stopping canyons, colossal rock formations and majestic saguaro cacti of Arizona. As the stars come out, the chuckwaggon suppers and cowboy cookouts fire up. Utah, too, offers enthralling Grand Canyon viewing, and being more remote than the South Rim it attracts fewer tourists. You may hear the sound of a native Indian flute or the complex intonations of the Navajo language. Here, the ruggedness of the outdoor experience contrasts with the upmarket affluence of towns like Scottsdale with its vibrant arts scene. In Wyoming, visitors can feel exhilaratingly close to nature as they venture deep into spectacular National Parks such as Yellowstone. Old Faithful is a must-see, so named for its dependability for shooting water to a height of 165 feet in a timely manner. We started our trip in Boston, a laid back city easily explored on foot. The Oak Long Room and Kitchen at the Fairmont Copley Plaza was a perfect spot for a glass of red wine – recently restored with a copper-top bar, soft leather bar stools and custom-designed music programme. From Boston we headed to Cape Cod. The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club near Chatham was in a beautiful spot, perched on the edge of the bay – so calm the reflection of the sky and clouds were mirrored perfectly in the still waters. The location also meant we could easily get to Hyannis (where the ferries depart for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket) and Provincetown, a bohemian, arty hub on the tip of the Cape. Continuing on our route south, we stayed in the historic harbour town of Newport in Rhode Island for a couple of nights. The Vanderbilt Grace, a converted, traditional New England mansion, was welcoming and friendly. We went out on boats and ate our body weight in seafood. The hotel’s restaurant, Muse, stood out as some of the best food on the trip – I can still remember the simple but delicious buttered lobster. The road trip took us through orchards and pumpkin farms – locals were already gearing up for Halloween. As I drove by the autumnal leaves in the low, dappled sunshine, I knew I had visited in New England’s best season.” / CARRIER: Edits FLORIDA A playground for sunseekers, watersports enthusiasts and adventure lovers Certainly Florida’s fabulous theme parks are a major draw for families and Disney-mad kids, yet delve a little deeper and you will find the epitome of East Coast refinement, the Palm Beaches and Boca Raton. A regular haunt of celebrities and golf aficionados, the resort incorporates the legendary 17-Mile Drive, one of the most scenic drives in the world, with its iconic Lone Cypress standing proudly on a rocky crag above the ocean. On a recent trip to San Francisco, Carrier’s Managing Director, Steve Kimber (pictured bottom right) was impatient to leave the city behind and head to this very spot to play golf at Pebble Beach Golf Links. “On a glorious sunny March day, with temperatures rising into the seventies, we teed off on Pebble Beach. And the experience was every bit as amazing as we had imagined. The opening holes lead you beautifully to the ocean where the 6th, the tiny par-3 7th and the 8th holes take you out around the most challenging headland. We had to remind ourselves to enjoy the scenery and the sea breezes as we continued on to the 10th before turning inland. Finally, the 17th returns back to the coast before you stand beside the sea to tee off on the most famous finishing hole in golf. The Lodge at Pebble Beach stands grandly beside the course, overlooking the ocean, and resonates with the history and passion of golf.” Discover more online: Read Managing Director, Steve Kimber’s full personal review. “IF I HAD ONLY ONE MORE ROUND TO PLAY, I WOULD CHOOSE TO PLAY IT AT PEBBLE BEACH” – Jack Nicklaus Pebble Beach, Pebble Beach Resorts, Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Lodge at Pebble Beach and 17-Mile Drive and The Lone Cypress are trademarks and service marks of Pebble Beach Company. Built in the same Moroccan rose-red coloured stone that characterises the architecture of the resort - an exciting fusion of North African domed roofs, square balconies and hidden gardens laid out to Chinese Feng Shui principles - the villas have a Moorish flavour to them. Their name is borrowed from the ancient word ‘tagoror’, which in the aboriginal Guanche culture (the original settlers here prior to the Spanish colonisation in the 1400s) referred to a private place where elders would seek seclusion and enlightenment. Reserved for adult guests, the Tagor Villas explode the out-dated myth that villa living is intended for families. These oversized villa rooms and one-bedroom suites have been designed purely with romantic seclusion in mind. Both offer a private balcony or terrace with rattan patio furniture, king size beds with cotton sheets and spacious marble bathrooms with Asprey toiletries. Other indulgent little touches include high speed internet access, iPod dock, Nespresso coffee machine and minibar. This is a place to relax and be pampered. An exclusive enclave within ABAMA, the Tagor Villas strike a perfect balance between the rural seclusion of villa living and the refinements of a large resort. A golf buggy remains at your disposal throughout your stay, allowing you to explore the resort’s 160 hectares. These encompass Canarian palms, dragon trees and volcanic landscapes that descend to a golden sand beach accessed via a funicular where you will find two natural swimming rock pools; there are seven more public swimming pools set in luxuriant gardens across the resort. There is a choice of 13 different bars and restaurants including the Michelin-starred M.B and Kabuki, the former borrowing its inspiration from the Basque heritage of one of Spain’s most renowned chefs, Martín Berasategui. Tagor Villa guests enjoy breakfast in another of the resort’s most spectacular restaurants, the aptly named El Mirador (‘viewpoint’ in Spanish) whose Balinese style wooden thatched roof and large beams overlook the Atlantic Ocean and neighbouring La Gomera. Those looking to keep active during their stay will appreciate the Dave Thomas-designed professional golf course and the Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy that caters for beginners and experts alike. Zoe Dodd, Sales Consultant Caribbean Island Hopping I am often asked if it’s worth using valuable holiday time to travel the extra distance to one of the Caribbean’s outer islands - and the answer is yes, in my view, it is. The islands vary so much, each having such a distinctive character and identity, that the (little) effort it takes actually makes the holiday feel longer and more fulfilling. Last year, Carrier discovered a new airline which has made island hopping around the Caribbean an easier - and altogether more stylish – prospect. Tradewind offer private charters throughout the Caribbean including St Barths, Anguilla, St Martin, Antigua and Nevis. On my trip, the pilot came to collect me personally from the lounge at St Barths and walked me over to the plane, explaining the route we would be taking. Their fleet is the newest in the Caribbean, with luxurious private jet-style interiors and a cool box with beers, wine and soft drinks. Guests will love the arrival back into Antigua; the pilot escorts you back to the terminal, introducing you to ground staff who then walk you straight through the fast track lanes. I literally touched down and was in my car within five minutes. My trip included Nevis, Anguilla, Antigua, St Martin and St Barths so if you are considering this type of holiday in the future, I would love to be of assistance. Here’s what some of the nation’s best travel writers think… ANTIGUA & THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS by Rob Freeman, Travelmail Let’s not beat about the bougainvillea – I had been expecting luxury. I was, after all, visiting five-star Rosewood resorts in the British Virgin Islands and Antigua with Carrier. Lovely, superbly furnished airy rooms, tick; fabulous Caribbean views and a white sand beach yards from the door, tick; an outdoor shower, tick; a chocolate on the pillow at night, tick. Even a pillow menu, so you can rest your head on 50 per cent feather and 50 per cent down, or siliconised hollow fibre balls, or specially designed ones for those who sleep on their sides. Essential really. But what was this? An en-suite legato menu too. Music to drift off by – you could select your choice and on your return at bedtime the room was filled with gentle notes. Swirling strings perhaps for an inward journey of musical meditation; or soothing vibes, with the alluring call of wind birds. Maybe world beats, for a musical voyage of celestial melodies. On the first night I went for ‘gentle breezes gliding through bamboo flutes and brushing koto strings’. The right choice. It was brilliant touches like this that took luxury to a whole new level for me at the fabulous resorts of Rosewood Little Dix Bay, lying behind a colourful barrier reef on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Isles, and Rosewood Jumby Bay, set on a 300-acre private Caribbean island just off Antigua. Not to mention the bicycles parked outside each cottage, so you could make the most of the lush 34 / Call our specialists on 0161 826 2581 or visit www.carrier.co.uk/magazine parkland in which the hotels are set, or the golfstyle buggies that could be summoned to shuttle you to dinner or a pampering session at the spa. Although I was lucky enough to visit in lobster season – which meant my key aim was to experience as wide a selection as possible of the many and marvellous ways in which it can be cooked – I was also there to pursue a fitness regime. And there, Rosewood again scored top marks, with state-of-the-art gyms (and attendant fitness gurus), superb tennis courts and coaching – and every water-based activity you could imagine. So guilt could be minimal as I pondered in the evening whether it should be lobster bisque, lobster thermidor or simply char-grilled on the barbecue. Mmmm… The ‘Lobster Season’ in the British Virgin Islands is open 01 November - 30 June each year. / CARRIER: Choice 5 Clockwise from left: Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Eden Rock, Carlisle Bay and Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort OF THE BEST ISLAND HOPS 1) A beach match made in heaven: Antigua has 365 to choose from whilst Anguilla’s powder-white expanses rank amongst the Caribbean’s finest 2) The Bahamas’ pink sand beaches and clapboard houses combine well with the Turks & Caicos’ world-class dive sites and an utterly captivating private island spa 3) Barbados, with its infectious vibe, exudes a welcoming ambience – its market towns alive, its beach resorts chic and sophisticated, whilst the unspoilt Grenadines instil an immediate feeling of laid-back calm 4) The vibrant spice island of Grenada has a distinct West Indian charm. Well, St Barths has one very special airstrip, a sliver of Tarmac where tiny puddlejumpers thrill with their aerobatics. And Eden Rock is one very special hotel, a dazzling collection of suites and villas set on a rock in the bay over which those little planes buzz. Eden Rock is the former home of Rémy de Haenen, the adventurer who first landed a plane on St Barths in 1945. He sprinkled the stardust on what has become the most exclusive drop in the Caribbean ocean, drawing the cream of society here. The legacy endures, not just in the exquisite period styling of lavish suites in memory of past guests such as Howard Hughes and Greta Garbo, but the smart and sexy atmosphere that makes this place irresistible to today’s jet-set. In a sleepy inlet on Antigua’s south coast, Carlisle Bay has perfected the art of five-star luxury with a Caribbean soul. This cluster of gingerbread houses on the glittering sands may offer all a guest could desire - sleek suites, chic restaurants, a cool pool and an indulgent spa. Yet the resort barely peeps above the palm trees, and each louvred shutter and fretwork balcony has been discreetly dressed in cool grey tones. Glorious nature still dominates this tropical landscape. But it’s not just about the look, it’s about the feel, too. The hotel’s creator, Gordon Campbell Gray, is committed to Carlisle Bay playing a responsible role in island life. He wants the West Indian character of the local people who run this place to “touch” all those who stay here. You can see from the easy smiles of guests and staff alike that he’s found a winning formula. Sri Lanka discovered Our Head of Product & Commercial, Fiona Greenhalgh has recently returned from a life-changing trip to Sri Lanka, travelling through bustling Colombo, exploring the intriguing Ceylon Tea Trails and seeing the famous ‘stilt fisherman’ at Weligama. Read on to share her unforgettable experience. What is a must see in Colombo? “I stayed in The Wallawa hotel in Negombo, a boutique style sanctuary. It is easily accessible to the hustle and bustle of Colombo – a fascinating experience – yet entirely secluded. I was welcomed with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc and warm roasted cashew nuts with thinly sliced garlic and fried curry leaves, a combination I have never tried before, but it was absolutely delicious.” What are the highlights of the Ceylon Tea Trails? “Travelling from Colombo to Hatton by helicopter was incredibly exciting and the aerial view breathtaking. I was then whisked off by my private chauffer to experience the gracious living at the colonial tea planter’s Castlereagh Bungalow. The views surrounding the bungalow were unbelievable and I was immediately made to feel at home. I particularly enjoyed watching the tea pickers at work. Make sure you order the high tea, served with delicate cucumber sandwiches and delicious homemade cakes and scones. I am usually a coffee drinker but I was converted after just one sip of Sri Lankan tea. Also be certain to take a personalised tour with James Taylor, the great, great grandson of the famous ‘Taylors Tea’ founder.” What was your favourite thing about Galle? “I arrived at the enchanting Amangalla, set within the Old Dutch Fort and embarked on a tour of Galle by tuk-tuk. Watching the famous ‘stilt fishermen’ at Weligama (known as the sand village), collecting their evening catch by the light of the setting sun was awe-inspiring. I took some extraordinary photos and even caught my very first fish with the help of the friendly locals. Back at my charming hotel, I enjoyed a relaxing bath, followed by a mouth-watering Sri Lankan curry served on the terrace.” 38 / Call our specialists on 0161 826 2582 or visit www.carrier.co.uk/magazine “...This beautiful colonial style bungalow [at the Tea Trails] blew me away – surrounded by beautiful rolling green tea plantations and the sound of birds...” Fiona on her memorable Sri Lankan adventure. / CARRIER: In the know SRI LANKA EXPERIENCES • Visit a tea plantation with a factory visit and tea plucking lesson • Book a historic tour of Colombo by vintage car • Trek through Sinharaja Forest Reserve You may also like to stay at… FACT Did you know that tea pickers pick as much as 22kg of tea per day? MARRAKECH AT ROYAL MANSOUR A beguiling assault on the senses, the rosered city of Marrakech, named after the warm pink hue of its medina walls, is an abundance of colourful souks, opulent palaces and luxuriant gardens. There could be no better introduction to the medina than Djemma el Fna square. Alive from dawn to dusk with Berber storytellers, snake charmers and henna artists, at night it is transformed into an openair restaurant boasting every type of street food from roasted lamb to spicy, fried aubergine. Seat of Morocco’s ruling dynasties for centuries, Marrakech’s finest monuments can easily be explored on foot including the ornate minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the remains of the 16th century Badi Palace; nicknamed ‘The Marvel’ for its Italian marble and Sudanese gold decor and the sumptuous Saadian tombs with their carved alabaster and zellige tiles details. You will also want to discover the famous souks where everything from Arab slippers to woodcarvings can be found. A highlight is the Souks des Tenturiers dyers’ market where the pavestones are splashed with a rainbow of fresh tints and a kaleidoscope of newly-coloured wools and silks billow above the market stalls. Until very recently Marrakech’s luxury hotels were confined to the Ville Nouvelle. However, a new trend in renovating riads has provided visitors with some enticing options to make the most of their weekend with a stay in the medina itself. One of the finest examples of this is the Royal Mansour where guests enter via bronze gates to discover a palace of shimmering tiles, hand-carved cedarwood and intricate ceiling lamps. A verdant oasis in the city, the riads are set in flower-filled Andalucian courtyards and comprise a ground floor sitting room, up to three first floor bedrooms and roof terrace with private canopied dining area, sun deck and plunge pool offering spectacular views over minarets and terracotta rooftops and the often snow-capped Atlas Mountains beyond. The prevailing theme of Royal Mansour is to offer a haven of relaxation. There is an extensive library in addition to an art gallery which holds regular exhibitions. Boasting a fitness centre, indoor and outdoor pools along with a traditional hammam, the spa offers tempting treatments using internationally renowned products including Chanel and marocMaroc. Assisted by their own butlers*, guests can choose to dine in their own riad or sample one of the hotel’s restaurants. Brainchild of three Michelin-starred chef, Yanick Alléno, La Grande Table Marocaine and La Grande Table Française offer authentic Moroccan and contemporary French cuisine; whilst La Table specialises in relaxed, Mediterranean dishes. There are also several lounges and bars where you can unwind, including the elegant La Loggia whose wrought iron balconies overlook the Koutoubia Mosque. *Butler service included for two and three bedroom riads, available upon request for one bedroom riads. 40 / Call our specialists on 0161 826 2584 or visit www.carrier.co.uk/magazine / CARRIER: Where to go 6 HOTELS FOR... Even the accommodations exude an air of romance, with nine magnificent suites offering spacious and luxurious living which blends the elegance of a bygone colonial era with all the convenience of modern facilities. We think you will fall in love with the four luxury suites which nestle amid beautiful indigenous trees that attract a variety of birds. Once the civilised world’s most treasured source of exotic spices like cinnamon, mace and clove, this 310 square-kilometre dot in the ocean has become a firm favourite with seekers after solitude and casual sophistication, with the Spice Island Beach Resort being the place to shake off the tensions of everyday life. Carrier clients often sing the praises of the enchanting accommodation – Luxury Almond Pool Suites, for example, offering the perfect solution for the couple who want to treat themselves to something special. Featuring a swimming pool and an outdoor dining terrace, they have their own private entrance and romantic tropical garden. The spacious bedroom is decorated in contemporary Caribbean style with a luxurious canopy bed to add an indulgent air, whilst in the elegantly furnished bathroom a whirlpool tub invites relaxation. Meals too are a delight, not just thanks to the Creole twist to the menu in intimate Oliver’s Restaurant, but also the sweet island sounds that accompany the occasion, provided by the very best of Grenada’s calypso, reggae and steel bands. I oversee a team of 31 crew onboard and am responsible for all their training, scheduling and general wellbeing. I’m also responsible for producing the activities for ‘Daily Passages’. The best part of my job is the amount of social time I get with crew and guests. I have to be a bit of everything; a manager, a friend, a confidant... whatever the situation demands. When you are not at sea, what do you like to do? Outside of Regent my passion is bowling! I’m an avid bowler and have been for many years. I have played in competitions for both country and the city. Is there anywhere you have not visited that is on your ‘bucket list’? I would really like to do a luxury small ship cruise in French Polynesia and cannot wait to have the opportunity to see some of Asia and Australia. Is there one memorable moment that has really stayed with you? From dinner and entertainment in the desert of Namibia, to dog sledding in the snowy mountains of Alaska, and a panoramic helicopter tour of Rio de Janeiro, in this job I have had many great experiences. Recently however, I was given the fantastic opportunity to escort a small group of guests for three days to Machu Picchu, Peru. Wow - it was absolutely breathtaking. Our hotel in Cusco stood at 11,800 feet above sea level and Machu Picchu at over 8,000 feet high. The scenery, the history and for the most part, the weather was incredible. From the flights, the hotel, the professional and knowledgeable tour guide and the friendliness of the locals, it is an experience I will never forget and will surely stay with me forever. 44 / Call our specialists on 0161 820 6002 or visit www.carrier.co.uk/magazine / CARRIER: Infographic Carrier Infographic... the ideal life balance RESEARCH: 1 - HALIFAX, DEC 2012, 2 - YOUGOV, NOV 2012, 2 - ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT, NOV 2012, 3 - THE SOCIAL SCIENCE & MEDICINE JOURNAL, MARCH 2010 / BOUNTY.COM, APRIL 2011, 4 - THE SOCIAL SCIENCE & MEDICINE JOURNAL, MARCH 2010 / BOUNTY.COM, APRIL 2011, 5 & 6 - SKY BROADBAND, JULY 2010, 7 - UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, MAY 2011, 8 - SKY BROADBAND, JULY 2010, 9 -PENNINGTON BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CENTRE, JULY 2012, 10 - WWF-UK, AUG2012, 11 - MARK VERNON, AUTHOR OF THE PHILOSOPHY OF FRIENDSHIP, 12 - QUICKBITE SURVEY, JULY 2012), 13 A - PROF CARY COOPER, LANCASTER UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT SCHOOL, FEB 2013, 13 B - WWW.FLEXIBILITY.CO.UK, 14 - DR DAVID LEWIS, SEPT 2010, 15- FINNISH INSTITUTE OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH, SEPT 2012, 16 - AVIVA, APRIL 2012, 17 - TRADES UNION CONGRESS, NOV 2012. Here are just a few unique experiences she has arranged for Carrier customers. These clients are big fans of Rod Stewart and wanted to arrange their trip to glitzy Las Vegas around the concert. I ensured they had two premier, front row orchestra tickets to the show at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace and arranged for them to be delivered to The Bellagio where they were staying. We can arrange tickets to see a range of shows in Las Vegas, including the Blue Man Group, Celine Dion and Cirque du Soleil. PRIVATE SKI INSTRUCTORS A family booked their first skiing trip with us, as the children had never been on skis before and the parents were a little rusty, I arranged lessons for them. They had a group family lesson for their first day and some further lessons for the children on the beginners slope. Their private ski instructor met them at their hotel at a time that suited and took them to the slopes, also explaining the plan for the week and how he would help to hone their skills and achieve their skiing goals. ICE DRIVING IN VAL D’ISERE During a long weekend, a large group wanted an afternoon away from the slopes. I suggested the Val d’Isère ice driving experience - they just couldn’t resist. Ice driving is a thrilling winter sport that can be taught in some of the world’s most stylish sports cars. I arranged for instructors to teach the group how to push their driving skills to the limit and help them learn new techniques; the BMW’s used for the ice driving are equipped with specialised studded tyres to ensure they had fun sliding across the ice whilst staying in control.
