The event, to be held on December 8, is aimed at showing all Benalmádena residents "the different ways that the town’s foreign residents celebrate Christmas," says the town hall. Stands will be operated by residents from the UK, Germany, Poland, Finland, Columbia, Perú, Jamaica and Senegal, to name just a few. The event runs from noon until 8pm in Arroyo la Miel’s Plaza de la Mezquita "The Festival of Christmas Traditions includes the participation of many of the different nationalities that coexist in the town, showing off their typical Christmas season products, traditions, outfits, folklore and other details of their particular way of celebrating the holiday," said mayor Paloma García Gálvez. "The goal is for local people as well as visitors to get to know a little better the culture of our foreign residents." The councillor for foreign residents, Adolfo Fernández, whose department is organising the event, added that is also aimed at "reinforcing the links between the foreign-resident community and the cultural life and customs of the town." The mayor (centre) and councillor Fernández (sixth from right),with participants of the Christmas event The councillor expressed great satisfaction at "the commitment, involvement and participation of foreign residents in the initiatives launched by the town hall to promote the inte- gration of all groups into Benalmádena society". Mayor Paloma García Gálvez highlighted a meeting between the Benalmádena delegation and the head of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), John McEwan, "focused on further strengthening our relationship with the British market and consolidating the growth in British visitors to Benalmádena". The town’s delegation, led by tourism councillor Adolfo Fernández, also signed an agree- ment for information about Benalmádena to be included in Thomas Cook Travel Magazine, the in-flight magazine on all of the company's European flights. Further, a deal was signed with leading Russian tour operator Natalie Tours, to promote Benalmádena as a warm-weather winter destination for Russian tourists. Wooing Russians is considered an important strategy for boosting off-season tourism, said the mayor. Toward the same end, the town hall met with representatives from Sierra Nevada to explore cross-promotional possibilities to sell the ski area and the beach town as complimentary destinations, given their proximity and widely varied of- First phase finished on million-euro park upgrade The mayor and other officials visit to the site THE first phase of work on a more than one million-euro renovation of the Los Limones park in Benalmádena Pueblo has been completed. Mayor Paloma García Gálvez last month visited the site, where the initial phase of work, budgeted at 435,000 euros, has included the restoration of the old flour mill at the site and a remodelling of Plaza del Chorrillo. Other work has involved landscaping, the creation of a new pavement along Avenida del Chorrillo where it borders the park, and the resurfacing of Calle Ibiza after upgrading underground utilities. The project, paid for by government FOMIT funds dating from 2006 and 2007, will make Los Limones "an area of enduring a joyment and leisure Photo: Rohu for local residents as well as visitors," said the mayor. The second phase of work, budgeted at 250,000 euros and to include further infrastructure and aesthetic improvements in Calle Ibiza, will get underway shortly with a four-month completion timeline. The final phase, with a budget of 350,000 euros, will be a continuation of similar work in Calles Jaén and Huelva and is expected to launch before springtime. The Benalmádena delegation also made contacts with numerous other company representatives as well as with tour- ism officials, including Spain’s tourism minister, José Manuel Soria, who highlighted the town’s importance as a top-rate Costa destination. A number of workers at the town hall will receive training on the use of the device. Similar lifesaving defibrillators are already installed in a number of other local facilities including sports centres, playing fields, the Club de Hielo ice rink and the town’s health centres. BUS STOP The bus stop near the train station in Arroyo de la Miel, on the route heading toward Benalmádena Pueblo, has been moved to a new location. The stop is now located by the taxi stand, around 100 metres to the west of where it was previously. The move is aimed at improving traffic flow, which was impacted by having the stops in each direction located directly opposite each other. INLAND ADVENTURE More than 50 people enjoyed a trip to the Córdoba towns of Rute and Iznájar last month in the latest edition of the Foreigners' Department’s Off the Beaten Track series of trips to inland destinations. Participants visited local monuments and visited Rute’s famous mantecados and chocolate factory, where they saw Spain’s biggest Christmas nativity scene made entirely of chocolate. BENALMADENA MONTHLY Improved emergency response in schools Town hall coordinates with police, firefighters and school officials TOWN hall officials met last month with representatives from all of the town’s public and private schools and the heads of the local police, fire and other emergency services, to establish improved response plans in the event of an emergency. The move came after a red alert for heavy rain on September 28 led to some confusion in the process of evacuating local schools. Based on that incident, the town hall detected a need for "a series of measures and joint actions with the different schools to guarantee a coordinated emergency response and the safety of the children at all schools," said the councillor for security and emergencies, Concepción Tejeda. Under the proposed measures, any official emergency alert will trigger the local police’s emergency response plan and activate a central command post to coordinate the response Photo: Fotocall Officials during the meeting efforts. Among other things, the plan calls for "a staggered evacuation of the schools to prevent major traffic jams," said the councillor. Also, local police officers will be sent to each school, along with Protección Civil volunteers and, if necessary, firefighters in order to coordinate the evacuation process, direct traffic and take any other required action. The councillor for education, Yolanda Peña, highlighted the "great interest shown by the school representatives," who she said came to the meeting with "important ideas as professionals who know first-hand about alert situations" in a school environment. She said the initiative will help ensure that "in the future there will be a greater coordination among all parties involved". Fines for dog poop and rubbish offenders MOTO DRAW The Torremuelle neighbourhood association in Benalmádena has donated a Honda Neuville 650cc motorcycle to be raffled off in a draw to raise money for Idaira, a seven-month-old local girl who was born with spinal muscular atrophy. The town hall’s social services department will sell up to 5,000 tickets at one euro each for the draw, to be held on February 24. Page 3 Councillors Concepción Tejada and Juan Olea Photo: Fotocall BENALMÁDENA town hall has ordered the local police to begin issuing fines to people who fail to clean up after their pets or who illegally dump rubble or yard waste. The enforcement push comes on the heals of an public awareness campaign and war- nings to offenders, said the town’s security councillor, Concepción Tejada, who announced the crackdown at a press conference last month along with the councillor for municipal maintenance, Juan Olea. "Residents are now well aware that they cannot throw out their yard waste or rubble in public ways or leave their dog’s excrement on the streets," she said. "So officers have been ordered to issue fines for these un-civic beha- viours." Dog owners who fail to clean up their pet’s mess face fines ranging from 300 to 1,500 euros, while people caught illegally dumping yard or construction debris can be hit for as much as 60,100 euros in the most severe cases, said officials. People who urinate or defecate in public places can also be fined between 751 and 1,500 euros. "Clean streets are not the responsibility of only the town hall, but require respectful behaviour by all," said maintenance councillor Juan Olea. "We need to take pride in being a clean town and can only achieve this if we all collaborate. If we don’t achieve it this way, we will have to keep fining offenders." 03.12.12 10:03:00 [Seite 'Monthly Benlamadena_4' - Dialog40cn710 | Costa Nachrichten | Monthly Benlamadena | Monthly Benalmadena | Monthly Benalmadena] von silviao (Black Bogen) Page 4 BENALMADENA MONTHLY Restaurant donates 150 meals to needy Users of municipal soup kitchen treated to a fine meal out THE owner of a Benalmádena Pueblo restaurant is donating more than 150 meals at his establishment to users of the municipal soup kitchen and food programme. Claus Baeunler, originally from Dusseldorf, Germany, launched the Longhorn restaurant just three months ago but decided it was already time to do something to give back to the community. "I wanted to make clear that this is not just a business but that I want to be part of the Pueblo," he said. The restaurateur hit upon the idea of inviting some 150 users of the municipal food programme to dine at his establishment, at his expense. "This was something we could do to help people in a difficult situation," he said. On Saturday November 3 the first group of 50 or so recipients were served lunch at the restaurant, which specia- In Brief LATE BILLS More than 120 homeowners' associations in Benalmádena are to receive all four quarterly rubbish collection bills for 2012 at the end of the year, according to town hall officials. They blame the situation on the "horrible management" of the previous administration and say it will no longer occur under the new billing system to be launched in January. Similar groups of 50 to 70 people were invited to dine on November 17 and December 1. The town hall applauded the initiative and expressed its gratitude for Mr Baeunler’s generosity and spirit of solidarity. Social services councillor Francisco Salido said it was a unique opportunity for the food programme users, for whom it would normally be "seriously difficult to go out for a meal away from home or the soup kitchen". Paper and pull tabs to aid ailing local man Local officials with Alejandro and his mother (far right) Photo: Fotocall BENALMÁDENA town hall has launched a campaign to collect aluminium can pull tabs and paper as a way to raise money for young local man who is fighting to regain his vision after a serious motorcycle December 2012 accident. Alejandro Duarte, now 19, was left in a coma for four months following the accident two and a half years ago and spent 19 months in a Madrid hospital being treated for brain damage. He now requires therapy to recover his vision, which is offered only at a specialist clinic in Barcelona, explained town hall officials. The campaign to collect recycling items comes in addition to other fundraising efforts launched by Alejandro’s family, who last month expressed their great gratitude to the town hall and local townspeople for their support. Containers are being set up in local businesses to collect the pull tabs and paper, which will be stored in premises that have been provided by the CIPEB business association. Presenting the scheme last month town hall officials called on all residents to chip in by depositing pull tabs or paper in the bins at local shops. The town hall has assigned a worker from the municipal maintenance department to work exclusively on the maintenance and improvement of the town’s principle hiking trails, including the routes up to Mount Calamorro, Quejigal and the Mijas sierra. Officials say the move is in response to complaints from users about the condition of some of the trails. LIBRARY MOVE The Benalmádena Pueblo library will be moved into the old health centre in Calle Cerillo "as soon as possible", said town hall officials last month. No specific date was given but the town hall says the move will happen during 2013, once the outfitting of the library’s new, bigger space is completed, which is expected to take a few months. SPANISH COOKING The latest instalment of the Foreigners' Department's popular Spanish cooking classes was attended by more than 60 residents of numerous nationalities. Last month’s event at the Alborada restaurant was split between two days to accommodate everyone who signed up. Participants learned how to prepare chickpea, vegetable and meat soup; oil-poached cod in tangerine sauce; and honey pudding ’gachas‘ for dessert. Information about upcoming classes is published periodically on the town hall website (www.benalmadena.com) and the Foreigners' Department's Facebook page. 03.12.12 10:03:03 [Seite 'Monthly Benlamadena_5' - Dialog40cn710 | Costa Nachrichten | Monthly Benlamadena | Monthly Benalmadena | Monthly Benalmadena] von silviao (Black Bogen) BENALMADENA MONTHLY December 2012 Page 5 Scottish Dancing club You don't need to hail from Scotland to share in the fun! SCOTLAND is known for its whisky, bagpipes and joyous spirit. This spirit expresses itself in many ways and one of the best known is dancing. Country dancing, a form of social dancing, although known as Scottish Country Dancing is now danced the world over from Scotland to Argentina, from Russia to South Africa. On the Costa del Sol, which has a large Scottish contingent, it has been danced for many years not only by Scots but by many nationalities. The Benalmádena town council is supporting this activity by allowing the use of a part of the Pensioners Club in Plaza Mezquita, Arroyo de la Miel, where a group of enthusiastic dancers get together every Saturday from 4 till 6 pm to have fun under the vigilant eye of Martin, who has many years experience with these dances. The group is open to all ages, The councillor for Tourism, Juan Adolfo Fernández Romero, with some of the dancers The councillor has fun trying a few steps those under 10 must come with an adult, those over 80 may come alone. • It’s practiced by all nationalities, we have Spanish, English, Argentine, French ....... • The steps are quite simple and easily learnt. • The physical requirement is that of wanting to have fun. Requirements: comfortable soft shoes, light clothes and a big smile. You need no previous expe- rience, but sense of rhythm does help. You need not bring a partner -we all dance together. You need not wear a kilt -- though they do look nicer. And, of course, you need not hail from Scotland. We’d like to share the fun with more people, so come along and give it a try. Pauline and Barry Jenkins EACH issue Benalmádena Monthly briefly turns the spotlight on an expat resident to get to know a little bit about the person behind the face... In this edition we asked Barry and Pauline Jenkins to sit in the interview chair. 1. Full name and age? Barry and Pauline Jenkins, 67 and 70 ish. 2. What were you doing before you came to Spain? After having several different jobs over my working career, I started my own small business owning a small decorators shop and Pauline spent her whole career, 43 years with the NHS ending up as a manager of various departments. 3. Why have you chosen to live in Benalmádena and how long have you been here? We have lived in Benalmadena for 9 years. We lived in a small village called Almogia for six years prior to moving here. Unfortunately my health problems forced us to sell and look for somewhere more convenient to relocate, so after some research, Benalmadena ticked all the right boxes for us and we moved here in 2003. 5. Do you feel at home here? Both Pauline and I have always worked together and after 15 years of living here, we feel fully integrated and try and live as full a life as possible. I also get a chance to meet many different nationalities through my voluntary work at the Casa Cultura, in Arroyo de la Miel on a Thursday morning as a volunteer helper for the foreigners department assisting people with their Padron. 9. How would you promote integration between foreigners and Spanish people? Our experiences of holidaying with Spanish people, here in Spain and further afield, has shown us what great people they are to be with and enjoy similar things to us. So why not try some of the activities organised by the Foreigners' Department, Spanish cooking to name one. A full list of activities is available from the department here in Benalmádena. 03.12.12 10:03:10 [Seite 'Monthly Benlamadena_7' - Dialog40cn710 | Costa Nachrichten | Monthly Benlamadena | Monthly Benalmadena | Monthly Benalmadena] von silviao (Black Bogen) BENALMADENA MONTHLY Page 7 December Agenda HIBITION CENTRE (On the N340 coast road, opp. post office).
