TOWN OF LOCKPORT 2016 SUMMER EDITION Summer Is Almost Here Well, it’s been a pretty decent winter and the great days of summer are almost here. The summer is the time we catch up on all the repairs and projects we’ve wanted to tackle over the last year. The Town of Lockport has its own summer projects. Highway Supervisor, Dave Miller, and his team will be out repairing winter damage and repaving many town roads throughout the area. On the 2016 list for repaving are Harrington Rd, Lincoln Ave Ext., Crosby Rd, Rapids Rd (From Old Beattie to Raymond Rd), and Ernest Rd. Because oil prices are so low, we may have money left in the budget to do Bowmiller Rd and Murphy Rd. On the water department’s aggressive schedule are waterline replacements and repairs. Plus, the summer is the perfect time to exercise all the hydrants and thousands of water valves across the town. On a serious note, our Town Highway and Water department employees will always have proper identification when out in the field doing their jobs. Look for properly marked vehicles with town logos. Our employees will always attempt to notify residents before coming on private property. When in doubt, please keep the inside storm door locked and call the town or the Sheriff’s department to confirm the town employees are scheduled to be working in your area. You know what they say, “better safe than sorry”. Please take a moment to review the plethora of summer activities planned for the Town of Lockport. We have two summer movie nights, Niagara County Historical Societies One Day Youth program, zumba classes, computer classes, junior golf lessons, 11th annual Community Day, a summer reading program, and coupons for any Historic Palace theater event. Lastly, the summer is when motorcycles hit the road and kids are out playing. Please double check all directions when out driving. Thanks, and have a safe summer! Mark C. Please try to have it out by Sunday night. We pick up throughout the town so once we have been in your area we won’t be back until the next month. If all of your brush isn’t picked up at once, please remember we will be back with the chipper. Recycling Shed: Our recycling shed is opened the last Saturday of the month from 9 am – 1 pm. If you need to get rid of items before then, you may call the Lockport C & D Recycling Center at 514-4594. They are located at 178 Oakhurst Street in the city. They take numerous items and are open Monday – Saturday. Garbage & Recycling: Please remember to have your garbage & recycling out to the curb by 6:30 am on your scheduled day. There are times when Waste Management is earlier than expected. And remember a large item, such as mattress, box spring, etc. is considered one unit. If you are over the limit, you’ll need stickers for the extra garbage. They are available at the town clerk’s office for a $1.00, Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. If you have any questions, please call the highway office at 4399522. We are opened Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Reminder: Please be cautious when driving on any highway as the weather gets warmer. Our highway department, along with the county and the state highway departments, work hard to maintain our roads. Drive carefully and slowly when you’re around road construction. First off - this part of the country was a dense forest until the very early 1800’s. The only way to get anyplace was on an Indian Trail known as “The Lewiston Trail”, that came through our area from Canandaigua to Batavia, to Chestnut Ridge Road (Route 77), to Cold Spring, Old Niagara Road, Stone Road, Ridge Road (Route 104, to Lewiston and Fort Niagara, and back again. About 1800 the 2 to 3 foot wide path became a (walking) Postal Route. In 1802, Adam Strouse became the First White Man in the area, when he built a Shanty at Cold Spring to shelter the new Postal Rider and his horse. There is no evidence of any Indian Settlement in the area that would later become the Town of Lockport, but there was an area near 18 Mile Creek, on the Northern edge of what is now the City of Lockport, that was an Indian Encampment before there were any white people in the area. In 1805 Charles Wilber built a Tavern at Cold Spring, with rooms to rent. This was at the time when people began coming from the New England area to find land to settle on here, or continue to go further West. In 1797 to 1799, a 300 foot wide straight Corridor was surveyed from the Pa. border North to Lake Ontario, near what would become Olcott. This Corridor is Transit Road (Route 78), and it is still a straight road, until it gets into the North End of the City of Lockport, where it changes direction, due to the Escarpment. September 2016 Monday 5 LABOR DAY NO COLLECTION Tuesday 6 Monday’s Collection Wednesday 7 Tuesday’s Collection Thursday 8 Wednesday’s Collection Friday 9 Thursday’s Collection Saturday 10 Friday’s Collection In 1808, when Niagara County was created, all of the land North of Tonawanda Creek was the Town of Cambria, and the land South of the Creek became Erie County. Cambria was divided into 12 Townships over the next 30 years. Before the Town of Lockport was created by NY State on 2-2-1824, there was no “Official” Town or City of Lockport. In 1821, 4 years before the Erie Canal and Locks were completed, a group of area landowners met and decided to call the area “Lockport”. The Village of Lockport was created in 1829, 5 years after the Town, and became the City of Lockport in 1865. When the Town of Lockport was created, all of the land east of Transit Road to Keck Road was taken out of the Town of Royalton, and other land from the Town of Cambria made up the Town. The land belonging to the Supervisor of the Town of Royalton (Daniel Washburn), became part of the new Town of Lockport, making him the First Supervisor of the new Town. Transit Road helped define the Town of Lockport 192 years ago, and is a great influence on the continued growth today!! Please Remember - The Town Historian collects and maintains records relating to the History Of The Town. If you have any old Town Records, maps or pictures, or records and pictures from the old OneRoom Schools, I would love to have them, or make copies for my Office. The Office is open on Thursday afternoons from noon until 4 PM, and at other times by appointment. As of the end of April, I have 12 new people interested in joining our Town Historical Society, and more would be appreciated. Our members do not have to be Town residents – just have an interest in Local History. We meet 8 or 9 times a year, and would really like to have you join us. Please call me for information.
