THE SEAWANHAKA LOG

VOLUME 31, ISSUE 3 OF SEAWANHAKA
EAWANHAKA CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB JULY 2010
FROM THE COMMODORE:
This season is off to an
active start. Please note
that all of the social and
sailing events are listed
each week in an email
from the Club. We also
have a website with
numerous pictures of
members participating in
various club activities.*
The July 4th barbecue at
the Club was very well
attended, and the staff
did an amazing job of
providing about 600
people a delicious
dinner. The fireworks,
courtesy of the Dolan
family, were even more
spectacular than ever
and greatly appreciated
by everyone at
Seawanhaka either at
the Club or on their boats.
July 4th Fireworks
On behalf of the membership I’d like to express our sincere thanks to the Dolans. On July 23rd the
Eastern Cruise will have its first night at the anchorage in Pt. Jefferson. There will be a raft-up with
cocktails reminiscent of the traditional SCYC rendezvous of years past. Please come join this event
even if you are unable to proceed East with the cruise for any other of the ports.
Because of the enthusiastic support of members and the careful planning of our Board, our
financial picture is solid. With a bit of luck, and no serious set backs, we should be able to
maintain our budget. One example of a necessary expenditure is painting our Clubhouse again.
The plan is to paint all the trim this summer which includes windows, doors, railings, and the
ceiling of the porch.
(* If you or your spouse would like to be added to the weekly email list, please feel free to contact Danielle
in the SCYC office at [email protected])
NEW MEMBERS’ RECEPTION
The Membership Committee is pleased to report that, notwithstanding the poor economy, the Club
has continued to attract many highly qualified candidates. The wonderful group of new members
made the Annual New Members Cocktail Party a particularly festive occasion.
We thank the members for their active participation in the process. As a result of these efforts,
the Club has added six new Class A members, seven new Class B members, and ten Season
members:

Although it is too late to propose new Season members for this year, we encourage all members to
begin consideration of appropriate candidates for next year.
Perhaps you can invite the candidate to one or more Club functions and jump start the process. In
addition, consider getting the process formally started early so that the candidate gets a full year
as a Season member. If you have any questions or concerns, the Membership Committee would
be happy to work with you on this process.
HERRESHOFF REGATTA
Nautilus
Herreshoff 2010 was attended by fewer boats but more overall length with two NY 30 footers:
Bonzai with Bam Miller & Nautilus with R. Sacarto, and a 29 foot sloop Dolphin from the Oak Cliff fleet.
(Note: Herreshoff listed boats by water line length)
Also, there were our 4 SCYC 16 footers or Fish class yachts: Woody Glenn’s Flounder, Walter
Carucci’s Bluefin, Michael Linburn’s Blue Fish and Greg Gulbransen’s Snapper as well as Peter Johnson’s
Rozinante. Our intrepid traveler on a Buzzard Bay 14 footer, North River II, was sailed by George Conk and
Dave Seroy. They traveled all the way from City Island again this year. We regret Nick & Martha Risom
suffered from engine trouble while bringing their Rozinante over from Norwalk.
Commo. Meyer kindly volunteered to sail Nautilus, ably assisted by wife Sarah and niece Hope.
Bonzai was Commo. Woodworth’s father’s boat and was sailed by Bud’s brother Don. The Fish Class
crews consisted of wives, sons, daughters, sisters and a grand niece. This was a full family affair as these
boats are so easy to crew that all ages are useful and comfortable. We met on the dock and then the
porch for lunch and our casual organization. It was a long wait for breeze. Finally at 2:30 Chairman Glenn
declared a southerly. This was an overreach of reality, but a testament to the Herreshoff design that the
boats were able to sail in a knot or two of breeze. The fleet was barely able to start with a Force 1
Sou’westerly and a swift foul tide. The beat, reach, run, beat, etc. to RN 6 off Mosses Point was a test of
patience with Commo. Meyer’s Nautilus crew taking the spinnaker up and
down repeatedly. The long beat had its toll with North River II, Snapper and
Dolphin dropping out at N6, and Blue Fish as the tide turned against her on
the way home. The Rozinante led the fleet, followed by the 30’s, and then
the Fish.
The Purple Heart Award goes to the crew of Blue Fish as they needed
to paddle their way to their
mooring. Beer and a grand
dinner on the porch seemed
to soothe all. Many thanks to
our large and patient Race
Committee who waited for
hours for some to complete a
mile and half course, and
Park Benjamin and Ed
Chimney for their pictures.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES
The Junior Sailing Program started the summer
season strong with over 70 sailors enrolled and lots of
spirit and enthusiasm. This summer our sailors will be
traveling to regattas with SCJYC pinnies on their lifejackets,
and their coach in our new Jr. Sailing Ribcraft.
On Saturday, June 26th, the Junior Club had its 74th
Junior Commissioning presided by Committee Chairman,
Peter Johnson and Junior Commodore Rachel Love. On
Thursday, July 1st, the Junior Club hosted the first Twilight
Mixer for families of the Junior Program. On Sunday, July
4th for the annual Independence Day Challenge
coordinated by Woody Glenn, the junior sailors continued
their
2 year winning streak against the senior members.
SCJYC Opti Racing Team at Shelter Island
The first JSA regatta of the season for our sailors
was Western Districts on July 8th for our Pixel sailors. Skipper Ben Israeli and crew Conor Dietzgen placed
10th,and skipper/crew William Charon and Sonja Drabin finished in 12th. The following day our Opti Racing
Team headed out to Shelter Island Yacht Club for the Opti A Regatta. After threatening storms the regatta
was abandoned.
The Seawanhaka Junior Club and the Oyster Bay
Sailing Foundation hosted the annual Leiter Clinic and JSA
Girls Champs. This was US Sailing Area B’s for young
women from around the Sound racing Laser Radials in
preparation for the national Leiter Cup on July 18th at Coral
Reef Yacht Club. The clinic was coached by Olympian sailor
Meg Gaillard Myles on Saturday. On Sunday, the girls,
including our own Liz Eastman, hit the water with little wind
in sight. Two races finally were completed at the end of the
day, with dying winds and a shortened course. Thank you
Bob Dixon for putting together this great event.
JUNIOR- SENIOR CHALLENGE
There was a great deal of enthusiasm for this
traditional event which is sailed every year in memory
of Commodore P. James Roosevelt. "Jim" was a top
Junior Club sailor who was three time National
Champion in his Raven, Old Crow, and actively
campaigned a Soling Manitou. Another ex- Junior
member, Woody Glenn, was one of Jim's steady
crews and has been involved with this event for
years. On Sunday, July 4th, under Woody's leadership
21 Juniors raced against 22 Seniors with at least 3
more adults ready to rotate in. The series of races were run by Lee Smith and Meg Floyd-Jones in
light WSW breezes. The Juniors sailed a good series winning 8 out of the 10 races. Many of the
Seniors started well, but found it slightly frustrating as the light-weight Juniors sneaked by them.
After racing in the blistering heat, cool watermelon provided by Lee Smith was enjoyed by all. The
plaque displaying the winner's burgee will be hung once again in the Junior Club.

Seawanhaka Boat Yard Employee Departs to Join the Navy
Some Seawanhaka members may not know that for the past two years, we have
had a boat yard employee who had spent four years in the Marine Corps,
including two deployments to Iraq.
Eric Roehrig has recently been selected into the Seal Program of the U.S. Navy,
which is one of the most demanding programs that our military has to offer.
On his final day at Seawanhaka, Eric was presented with a mug by the Boat Yard
Committee Chairman, Lance H. Bondy, from the Seawanhaka members in
recognition of his patriotism and past (and future) service to our country.
Eric Roehrig receiving Seawanhaka mug
at his fairwell party
Seawanhaka has a long tradition of support for our military services, and the
Navy in particular. Five Navy Commanders are ex-officio members of
Seawanhaka, and active duty naval officers receive special recognition in our bylaws.

BERMUDA RACE
Seawanhaka was well represented on the
podium at the Newport Bermuda Race Awards
Ceremony held at the Governor’s mansion in
Hamilton, Bermuda. The Bermuda Race is one of
three most prestigious Ocean Races in the
World. Rives Potts won the coveted St. David’s
Lighthouse Trophy in his boat Carina, which was
designed in 1969 by McCurdy & Rhodes. Ian
McCurdy accepted the William Snaith Memorial
Trophy on behalf of McCurdy & Rhodes. The
trophy is given to the designer of the yacht
winning the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy.
Sheila McCurdy, in her role as Commodore of the
Cruising Club of America, was one of the officials
on the stage. Larry Glenn presented the William
L. Glenn Family Participation Trophy to Rives Potts, winner in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division, and to
Robert D. Cavanah, Jr., winner in the Cruising Class. The trophy was donated in 2008 to the CCA by the
Glenn families in memory of Will. The trophy is given to the boat with the best corrected time in the
Cruising Division and in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division. The boat must have at least 4 immediate
family members, and one of them must be in the afterguard. Also participating in the race was Lorenzo
Vascotto in his boat, Bacci.
Larry, Anne, and family and friends finished 2nd in their class in their J-44 Runaway. This was a real
Seawanhaka boat. Not only did the crew consist of 7 family members- Larry, Anne, Larry, Jr. (Watch
Captain), D’Arcy Glenn-Carr (Navigator), Willets Meyer (Assistant Navigator), Karl Witton and Ned Glenn - 9
of the 12 had been to Jr. Club, and each of the crew are members of Seawanhaka. Brandon DeNatale,
Toney Edwards, Julian Fisher, Mark Swanson and Charlie Pucciariello rounded out the crew. Allison Witton
could not be on the race because of her pregnancy. This loyal crew worked hard and did a great job
mastering the currents of the Gulf Stream and dozens of sail changes to finish within an hour of the class
winner and 17 minutes ahead of the third place boat – after 635 miles of racing!!
Larry is very pleased to see the growth in the numbers of family participants in the Race. The William L.
Glenn Trophy has really put a focus on this aspect of the sport.
