T
he Habitat Conservation Fund
was established in 1990 by a vote
of the people. Distributed to the
responsible state agencies, the fund
ensures that $30 million per year for
30 years is dedicated to protecting
habitat for some of California’s most
awesome residents such as the bald
eagle, the mule deer, the Chinook
Salmon, and the human being. “There is nothing more practical, in the end,
than the preservation of beauty, than the
preservation of anything that appeals to the
higher emotions of mankind.”
Teddy Roosevelt
“Our friend asked to be taken to the hills from whence came his strength in
life. He wanted, one last time, to smell the air, to feel the dirt, to reconnect
with all that mattered in life. To say hello to the horizon.”
Lynn Sadler, President
Sacramento Valley Conservancy
“Ducks Unlimited has enjoyed a beneficial partnership with the
California Wildlife Conservation Board to conserve over 34,800
acres of wetlands and associated habitats through the Habitat
Conservation Fund.”
Chris Hildebrandt, Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
“More than eleven million people live in the densely urban
Los Angeles area—one of the fastest growing regions in the
United States. With more than a million visitors annually, the
easily accessible parklands of the Santa Monica Mountains
Conservancy connect thousands of children with the tranquility
of nature every month, thanks in part to the
Habitat Conservation Fund.”
Joseph T. Edmiston, FAICP, Hon. ASLA
Executive Director, Santa Monica Monica Mountains Conservancy
“The Habitat Conservation Fund has provided crucial
assistance to numerous Sierra Nevada organizations and will
help the Conservancy and its many partners thoughtfully plan
for the future of the entire Range of Light.”
Jim Branham, Executive Director
Sierra Nevada Conservancy
“As a legislator, with our limited time to serve the public,
the Habitat Conservation Fund is one way we can see
immediate benefits for our constituents and provide an
environmental legacy of habitat protection that will serve
future generations.”
Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny (D-San Diego)
“It’s an important part of the human spirit to get out and commune
with nature. And to me, that’s a part of a civilized society.” Retired State Senator Ross Johnson (R-Irvine)
from “Saving Open Space II” by Hills for Everyone
“We were able to solve a land use controversy for one of our
local government partners when they could not afford to
purchase valuable habitat that was in the path of development. The Coastal Conservancy used the guaranteed funding of the
Habitat Conservation Fund to collateralize the loan that allowed
the purchase.”
Neal Fishman, Coastal Conservancy
“My family has been ranching in Contra Costa County
for almost one hundred years. I’ve lived here my whole life. The Muir Heritage Land Trust, with help from the
Habitat Conservation Fund, has saved some of the
best grass producing property in the state
and helped make it possible for my family
to continue doing business in the Bay Area.”
Brody Sanders
“I think that the very health of the region, its
health economically, its health socially, its healthfulness culturally – the whole psychology of the
region – depends upon access to open space. We need it to maintain the sanity of our culture.” Kevin Starr, California historian
from “Saving Open Space II” by Hills for Everyone
