We have had a settled start to Term 3, with the large majority of
students focused on their learning and making the most of their
opportunities. It was good to see a number of parents/guardians
at our Parent Teacher Evenings last Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. I trust that parents/guardians were able to gain a clear
understanding of their son’s/daughter’s achievement in the first
half of the year. I have attached a staff list with every teacher’s
email address, so parents/guardians are able to contact staff on a
regular basis if needed.
Japanese Exchange Students This week, we welcomed seven
Japanese students from Tokyo and Nara who are on an AFS
exchange. Seven of our families are having the pleasure of
hosting the students for the next four weeks. During Homeroom,
we are learning two to three Japanese words a day, so we can
converse with the Japanese students:
KONICHIWA – HELLO
MAJI – FUNNY, GREAT (MA, JI)
 Tue 6 Dec - Gr 10 Start Day Don College
SUGOI – AWESOME (SEA, GO, I)
 Wed 14 Dec - Presentation Evening
ARIGATO – THANK YOU (ARE – I- GAT – OU)
 Tues 20 Dec - Gr 10 Dinner
HAI – YES
 Wed 21 Dec - Farewell Assembly
IIE- NO
I have been impressed with the warm way students have greeted
our guests and the respect they have shown. It has been
delightful to observe the positive relationships being developed.

Staff Changes
Mr Christie is currently on leave, recovering from the fourth operation on his leg. We are hoping he will
be back at school at the start of week four; Mrs Hart is doing a wonderful job teaching Mr Christie’s
classes while he is on leave. We welcome Mr Macmichael to Latrobe High School; Mr Macmichael is
taking Miss Leonard’s classes for the rest of the year, whilst Miss Leonard is Acting Assistant Principal.
Starting Wednesday next week, we welcome Chanelle McCormack, our new Health Nurse. Chanelle is
one of twenty health nurses to be rolled out across the state. Chanelle will be available for students on
Wednesday each week. She will also work at Ulverstone High, Reece High and Devonport High. Chanelle
will write a report in the next newsletter, outlining her role in supporting the health of students.
As of Monday, Mr Jamie Smith (Numeracy Specialist Teacher) will be moving to work with Devonport
High School, Nixon Street Primary School and East Devonport Primary School. Due to our improved
numeracy results, Jamie has been moved to other schools. We have benefited greatly from Jamie’s
leadership over the last two years, and Jamie can leave Latrobe High School extremely satisfied that our
numeracy curriculum and pedagogy are in much better shape than when he arrived. We wish Jamie well
with his role at his new schools.
Grade 6 Parent and Student Information Evening
We are holding our ‘Parent and Student Information Evening’ on Wednesday 14 September, for all
prospective Grade 7 (2017) students and their parents. The evening starts at 6:30pm in the school
Gymnasium. Parents and students who are unable to make it on the night are encouraged to contact the
main office to arrange a meeting and tour of the school.

Ski Trip
It was an absolute pleasure taking twenty seven students away
on the ski trip to Mt Hotham. They were respectful to each
other and made the trip enjoyable for everyone. Our lodge
managers, Rob and Tammy, were once again glowing in their
comments about our students. The students should be proud
of the positive way they approached learning to ski or
snowboard. Their persistence, resilience and support of each
other, helped them grasp a challenging and difficult skill. We
had a myriad of conditions that students had to adjust to over
the five days. We had snow fall nearly every day, and at one
point the temperature fell to a chilly -8 degrees. With clear
skies on the last day, students were able to take some
wonderful photos. The snow was dry, which made skiing and
boarding all that more fun. I am certain that students had a
wonderful time and are already saving so they can attend a ski
trip next year with Latrobe High School or Don College. We will
be advertising next year’s ski trip early in Term 4.

School Redevelopment
With the wild and wet winter we are experiencing, progress has been a little slower than VOS Construction had
planned. However, things are still progressing and with the roofing contractor starting this week, it won’t be long
until the new buildings are wrapped up so they can progress regardless of the weather. At the end of next week,
the current Grade 7 locker bay area will be handed over to VOS, so they can start construction on our new library
space. Grade 7 students will move into their new lockers, situated under our new covered way.
During the floods, our Gymnasium floor was damaged and the insurance company is arranging for a new sprung
timber floor to be installed. As the timber will need to acclimatise for at least six weeks, we don’t expect to have
full access to the Gymnasium until the start of Term 4.

Don College Parent Information Evening
Don College teaching staff will hold an information session for parents/guardians of Grade 10 students on
Wednesday 26 October, starting at 6.30pm in the Latrobe High Library. In the past, we have received excellent
feedback from parents about the evening. I encourage Grade 10 parents and guardians to attend, so you are aware
of all the opportunities that exist at Don College.
Years 11 & 12
At Latrobe High School, our Grade 10 students will soon begin the process of investigating what 2017 will look like
for them. Our goal is for the overwhelming majority of our students to transition to Don College, with the aim of
completing Year 12 in 2018. Latrobe High is working closely with Don College to make sure that our students are
well informed about the course options available to them, so their transition is as smooth as possible.
You are most likely aware of the Tasmanian government‘s plan for extending Grades 11 and 12 into high schools.
For some of our students the change to Grade 11 can be very challenging. It is with these students in mind that we
are working with Don College, Devonport High School, Reece High School and Sheffield School to investigate
alternative programs for these students. These programs will be personalised to the individual student’s needs and
may include study at their high school. Work has begun reviewing student data to identify those students who may
need additional support in order to complete Grade 12. The aim is to assist all of our students to complete their
Tasmanian Certificate of Education.

GRADE 7 REPORT
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope that you’ve had a great break. Students have been placed into new Personal Interest classes, with many
students excited about starting a new subject or activity. Students selected these PI’s towards the end of Term 2. A reminder to families
that if your child is unhappy with their PI, then they can swap out of the class (it needs to be done quickly) if their desired class is not already
full. Students have also swapped over their lockers, with many students who had bottom lockers for the first two terms now having the
luxury of having a top locker and not having to bend down.
Students have been assisting me with transition conversations and activities at their previous primary schools over the past two weeks. They
have provided excellent knowledge and games to the students and have prevented the Grade 6’s from stressing prior to coming to Latrobe
High School in 2017. We still have some primary schools to visit prior to the Camp Clayton Challenge days, to be held on 30 and 31 August.
We will have nine Grade 7 boys and girls assisting the school in providing activities and structures to the Grade 6 challenges.
As per previous terms, we will continue to acknowledge students who remain focussed on the school values. These will be deemed the stars
of the fortnight for Grade 7’s. The following students were deemed stars in their classes this fortnight:
7A Jordyn Wall: Jordyn has settled in well in Sports for Girls. Jordyn also stayed behind after class and helped pack up to assist
Mr MacMichael.
7B Blake Webb: Blake continues to work on his instrumental skills with lunch time practice for Rock Band.
7C Emma Fawkner: Emma has started off Term 3 well with excellent punctuality to class. Emma has shown great organisational
skills and is adhering to the school values.
7D Oliver Lancaster: Oliver has been pushing himself during Junior Fitness Fanatics and strives to give his best in every class.
Oliver has settled in well with the Grade 7/8’s in that class.
Students have settled in well yet again this term, and they continue to go above and beyond in displaying our school values of respect,
resilience, learning and positive relationships. The following students have achieved a Strength Award since the start of July: Cameron Hill,
Holden Jago, Indeah Kelly, Oliver Lancaster, Levi Sheehan, Anna Nguyen, Milla Rigby, Pirri Weeks, Michala Frankcombe, Megan Hedditch,
Jonte Armitstead, Becky Bentley, Piper Catlin, Nikitta Clarke, Olivia Smith, Porcha Stafford, Sif Svendsgaard (x2), Kaylee Thompson, Bianca
Richardson, Ava Wyllie, Jack Huddlestone, Briar Parker, Jarom Grundy, Tess Horton, Emma Fawkner, Ethan Flack, Madaya Doran, Cooper
Duniam, Kate Chaplin, Adrian Cooper, Ahliya Williams, Ben Carey, Billy Thomson, Jordyn Wall, Katie Ryan, Piper Stafford, Belle Needham,
Holly Richardson, James Huxtable, Tate Legge, Alex Hardy, Amy Harrison, Renee Flack, Brielle Geard, Ebony Conway, Sammie Dick,
Chelsea Collins, Briealee Connelly, CJ Agustin and Brandi Atkins.
Thank you to all the parents who have made contact with me in regards to their child. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any issues/
concerns or to find out further information on [email protected]

Resilience
After a well-earned rest, students have commenced Term 3 with the possibility of a new teacher for some Junior Personal Interest
classes. Not only are some of the teachers new, but sometimes students are not in classes with their friends. Although difficult at
first, it is a great opportunity to meet new people and also a way to challenge yourself to be out of your comfort zone. Who
knows, you might have just met the person who will change your life forever!!
Respect
I would like to continue to thank all parents and students who are respecting our uniform policy. The term started with the
majority of students in uniform, and a recent crackdown saw almost every student in correct school uniform. I hope that this can
continue, and I remind students and parents that a note should be given to the homeroom teacher if, for any reason, a student is
out of uniform.
Learning
Congratulations to the following students who have made a great start to Term 3 in Mr Welch’s Maths class. Make sure you
continue this effort throughout the term. Joshua Reiter, Trent Williams, Abbey Jones, Brooke Parker.
Positive Relationships
It is great to see our students continuing to build positive relationships. Some might be doing it in the rain playing basketball, and
others prefer to be sitting and making each other laugh. Some prefer to stick together in a large group and roam the corridors,
while others prefer to be in pairs. It is most pleasing when I see students supporting one another, especially when they are
supporting people outside their usual friendship group. An example of this was Shelby Bellchambers. She cared for the welfare of
a student who was upset and had not been treated fairly. Thanks for helping to make our school community a nicer place.
Best Efforts
Congratulations to the following students who have recently received a Strength Award. Well done and keep up the great work!
Charlette Barwick-Wilson, Tayla Davey, Cooper Draney, Loghan Hall, Amy Jones, Febey Mitchell, Magnus Overdijk, Cody Porter,
Adam Price, Taya Saunders, Georgia Smith, Billy Whitney, Trent Williams, Jasmine Smart, Brady Rouse, Jemma White, Declan
Porter, Arabella Catlin, Joshua Lowe, Joseph Woodhouse, Jacob Ball, Jake Nicolle, Luke Shegog, Shania Huett-Maney, Aiden
Lawson, Lachlan Harris, Logan Howe, Corey Abblitt, Luke Brydon, Joshua Reiter, Trent Williams, Abbey Jones, Brooke Parker,
Shelby Bellchambers.
Congratulations to all the students who have now received multiple Strength Awards. The following students are currently the top
of the table with five! Georgia Smith, Jemma White, Brady Rouse. Awesome effort!!
Thank you for reading.

GRADE 9 REPORT
Welcome back to school for the beginning of Term 3. I will start this week’s newsletter article with a list of recent
Strength Award recipients: Billy Thorne, Luke Williams, Tarlia Johnson-Cooper, Savannah Jones-Higginson,
Montanah Jago, Nathan Baldock, Ryan Connelly, Amy White, Tyler McClure, Kye Edgar, Brianna Walker,

Baricuatro, Antoinette Clarke, Zac Clarke, Khai Middlecoat, Darcy Miller, Aiden Kissick, Mathew Napier, Declan
Rigby, Ella Westcott, Arabella Gillies, Grace Dutton, Jesse Langmaid and Lilly Maynard. Congratulations to these
students!
Hopefully all parents have carefully read your child’s report and taken up the opportunity to speak with teachers
if there has been the need. It is a valuable tool to help promote the learning and development of your child. The
following is a list of students who need to be commended for their impressive mid-year report, receiving only
excellent and good in all subjects: Francis Baricuatro, Kaleb Barwick-Wilson, Antoinette Clarke, Zac Clarke, Ryan
Connelly, Jaime Frankcombe, Shania Grundy, Kaycee Hering, Jesse Langmaid, Chloe Lomax, Michaela Marshall,
Lilly Maynard, Tyler McClure, Khai Middlecoat, Darcy Miller, Harmoni Richardson, Gemma Smith, Lachlan
Stanisz, Piper Treloggen and Amy White.
Just a reminder that the student leadership process will be beginning this term and that the easiest way for
students to show leadership is by setting a positive example for their peers to follow.

GRADE 10 REPORT
The next two terms will be very busy for all Grade Ten students. I am hoping students took the time to read over their reports
and have thought about the areas where more effort and focus can be placed into their learning. Thank you to the parents/
guardians who came along to Parent-Teacher Evening, as well as those who took the time to talk to the Don College staff we
had at the school on the Wednesday evening. I am sure you found this very beneficial.
The Don College Taster Day will be held on Tuesday 6 September. A letter will be sent out closer to the date, outlining the
details for the day. Stay tuned!
During the course of the year, Grade 10 students are lucky enough to attend various talks given during school time by the
Defence Forces, past students, businesses and employers. On 23 August, students will have the opportunity to attend an
information session delivered by the Master Builders Association of Tasmania Inc. This session will better inform students
about the variety of career options in the Building and Construction Industry. Currently there is a labour and skills shortage
within this industry in Tasmania. The session will run for approximately 35 minutes.
Congratulations to the following students who have received Strength Awards over the past two weeks: Eve Bell, Eli
Connelly, Katy Danos, Kyle Lamprey, Aimee Smith, Ben Price, Jyosh Saggers, Edward Lancaster, Danyon Lyall, Quinn
Gamble, Meg Hardman, Ebony White, Connor Duncombe, Ayden James, Damon Cock, Ryan Forster, Liam Slatter, Bjarke
Svendsgaard, Jacob Woodcock, Asha Beveridge and Zac Cope.
This last week, a number of Grade Ten students have left the school grounds without permission. It is vital that students do
not leave the premises, and if they do need to leave for an appointment, the student must follow the guidelines by bringing a
note or having a parent call the school, and then sign out at the office. If they return, they need to sign back in.
If you have any questions regarding your child, or any of the points, please email me or call me on the school’s number.

HPE HOTSPOT
Grade 9 Student Darcy Miller competed in the State Cross Country Championships on Saturday 23
July at Pontville, Hobart. Darcy won the Silver Medal in this race which earns her the opportunity to
represent Tasmania in the National Cross Country Championships in Canberra on 20 August.
Well done and best of luck, Darcy!!
Cooper Stuart & Chloe Nicholls have been selected in the North
Melbourne Football Club’s Next Generation Academy. The AFL club is on
the hunt for talented players between the ages of eleven and fifteen to take
part in a 10-week development program. The aim is to provide solid
pathways into further development and an opportunity to participate in elite
teams, with the final target being to get as many young people drafted into
AFL clubs in the future as possible. Former students Lauren Stevenson and
Zoe Knight were also chosen in the academy.
PE uniform
Students are reminded that they must bring a change of PE clothes to physical lessons. Issues regarding
hygiene and cleanliness affect the whole school especially when physical lessons are mainly outside due
to the redevelopment of our gym. It is becoming an issue when students are using the lack of PE
clothes as an excuse not to participate because it is too cold/wet. This impacts the vibe and flow of the
lesson if many people are sitting out and refusing to participate. It is the responsibility of the student to
bring a change of PE clothes that is warm enough to feel comfortable while participating. If students fail
to bring a change of PE clothes three times in the same term, the student will be issued with a
restorative catch up session (detention). Every time after that in the term, the student will also be
issued a restorative catch up session.
Mobile phones
A reminder that students are not to have mobile phones or similar devices in Health or PE lessons.
Having these devices in class is a major distraction to other students and teachers. They also pose a
safety concern, especially in PE lessons if students are not paying attention. Please leave your phone in
your locker. If phones are sighted in a lesson they will be confiscated and sent to the office to be
picked up at the end of the day.
Tassie Hawks Cup
Following the success of the Grade 9/10 Latrobe High Boys Football Team in winning the NWJFU
Grand Final last term, they have qualified to play in the 2016 Tassie Hawks Cup. The “round-robin”
style tournament will be held at Aurora Stadium, Launceston, on Wednesday 14 September and they
will play against other premiership teams from the North and South regions. This will be the second
year in a row our team will represent the North-West of the state and we are hoping to come away
with the honour of being the State’s best school football team.
State Cross Country:The Tasmanian Cross Country Championships were held at Pontville Equestrian & Sports Centre
(near Hobart) on Saturday 23 July, where Darcy Miller braved the icy and windy conditions on a hilly
course to finish in second place in the U/16 Women’s event.
Darcy has been selected in the State Team to compete at the National Cross Country Championships
in Strolmo Forest, Canberra, competing on the Robert De Castella course on 20 August, which will be
a great experience for her and we wish her well in her endeavors.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL
Appointments
We understand some students may need to leave school during the day to attend appointments. If this is the case,
it is essential they follow the school protocols.
Sickness or Injury
If students need to be collected from school as a result of illness or injury, the office staff will contact parents.
Students should not be contacting parents through their own devices. Students still need to follow the school
protocols and sign out when leaving.
School Protocol
This system is in place to keep our attendance records accurate and ensure the safety of all our students so please
help us by following our protocols.
 A note of permission should be provided from the parents, or a phone call, SMS or Skoolbag message to the
office, if it is a pre-arranged appointment.
 Students need to sign out at the front office and then sign back in, if and when they return to school.
 Students must be collected from the front office, not met in the car park or on the road.
 The person who collects the student must also sign them out.
IF PARENTS NEED TO CONTACT THEIR CHILD DURING SCHOOL HOURS, THEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO RING THE
SCHOOL OFFICE ON 64261061 AND A MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO THEIR CHILD.
OUTSTANDING ACCOUNTS
We have now passed the end of the financial year which is an important reporting time for the school. We would like to
extend our appreciation to all those parents who finalised their accounts for the 2016 school year.
A reminder to those who still have outstanding accounts that the school will accept payment by instalment. The methods
of payment that the school can accept are as follows:
BPay (preferred)
Cash
EFTPOS
Cheque
Please call at the school or contact the office on 64261061 if you would like to discuss this option further.

Registration to Work with Vulnerable People
If you volunteer at this school, you will be required to register for ‘Registration to Work with Vulnerable
People’. This will be mandatory by 1 September 2016.
In July 2014, the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 commenced in Tasmania.
This registration aims to significantly improve safeguards to help keep children safe from harm.
These are the provisions under the new legislation:
Employees and volunteers must apply for their own Working with Vulnerable People Registration
(RWVP) once every three years.
Employers can check a person is registered using the Tasmanian Department of Justice (DoJ) website at
http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children.
The same RWVP will apply to everyone – employees, self-employed people and volunteers.
There are two forms of Registration, they being Volunteer Class and Employment/Volunteer class
registration. This second class allows a person to both work and volunteer with children.
Everyone with registration will be continuously monitored for serious offences.
It is extremely important that staff and volunteers are registered and that their school or business unit is
recorded against the registrant. This information is used to communicate decisions about the suitability of
people to work with children. This information can be checked and recorded using the DoJ website using
the registrant’s registration number and surname.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR RWVP?
Complete the online application form. This is available from the website:
http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children. It is critical that you
choose Department of Education from the drop down box.
DO NOT PAY
Print the ‘application receipt’ which is generated when the application has been completed in full. If you do
not have access to a printer, record the reference number and take that to a Service Tasmania Shop.
Take the ‘application receipt’ to a Service Tasmania Shop, have your photo taken and have your identity
confirmed. You will need to satisfy the identity requirements. A driver’s licence will do this if it displays
your correct name and address. Advise the staff that you are a volunteer with DoE and ask for a deferred
payment. DO NOT PAY. The bill will be sent to DoE.
The Tasmanian Department of Justice will assess and process applications and issue the Assessment
Notice and Working with Vulnerable People Registration card directly to the applicant.
Generally applicants will receive their results within six weeks of completing the application process.
There may be delays, however, depending on the applicant’s personal information.
