Fall
Festival
Our Fauquier Springs families had a great time
at the Family Fall Festival on Sunday, October
20! They enjoyed riding on the pony, the fun
hayride to go trick or treating, face painting,
making friends with the petting zoo animals and
making their own caramel apples. Everyone also
enjoyed Chef Tom’s apple cider donuts, warm
cinnamon apples, hearty chili with cornbread,
and other delicious selections.

Welcome New Members
We have two extraordinary professionals at the Fauquier
Springs Country Club dedicated to catering and banquets as
part of Legends Catering. The Sales and Catering Manager
Lauren Turner, a George Mason University Bachelors of
Science in Tourism and Events Management graduate and is
also an Accredited Event Designer gaining her certification
from The Institute of Wedding and Event Design. Lauren’s
Assistant Sales and Catering Manager Rachel Cordy, a
James Madison University Bachelor of Art in Fine Arts
graduate has been planning events for 9 years and has
worked in the Tourism and Hospitality industry while
traveling internationally from Hawaii. Lauren and Rachel
both have a passion for design and their artistic talents
and abilities bring value and creativity to each event. They
have successfully designed and sold hundreds of events
including weddings, corporate events, birthdays and many
other occasions both here at the club and at offsite locations
throughout Fauquier and surrounding counties.
Thomas and Cindy Valk and family
Why is this important to know? With the talents of Lauren
and Rachel on your side in collaboration with Executive
Chef Tom Berry and Sous Chef Walter Sandoval as well as
the onsite expertise of the Banquet and Catering Managers,
Zoila Sousa and Maranatha Holley-Poole, FSCC members
have assurances that their events and parties are designed,
produced and managed by the best team in the business.
Your benefits of membership continue as the club extends
a 50% discount on room rentals to members looking to
host an event at the club as well as a discounted service
charge. As a member you can also extend a “Sponsorship”
for a friend or family member to host an event here as well.
The sponsorship entitles them to receive a 25% reduction
in room rental fee and the same discounted service fee.
Interested in hosting an event offsite? We also extend
member discounts when catering away from the club for
either a drop off or a full service event. As a member you
will receive a 50% discount off of all service items rented
such as tables, chairs, linens, china, glassware, and flatware.
Just need some free advice? Ideas on what to serve,
decorations, ways to build a table display that will dazzle
your guests or any other event specific question are
welcomed by Lauren and Rachel. Take advantage of this
free consultation even if you choose not to utilize the
full catering services. They can be found upstairs in the
executive office Monday through Friday or hustling about
on the weekends coordinating many of the events they
have planned this holiday season; hopefully for your
special event as well!

The 2nd Annual Springs Cup
proved to be a wonderful event.
The Monroe Team defeated the
Marshall Team by a final margin
of 36 ½ points to 29 ½ points
using a Nassau points system.
Thanks to Lisa Mulford (Monroe
Team Playing-Captain) and Steve Shipe (Marshall Team
Playing-Captain) for drafting the teams and setting
up the matches/pairings. Fourball (aka best ball) was
played on Saturday and foursomes (aka alternate shot)
was played on Sunday. David Couk and Ann Gravett led
all teams in fourball scoring with a net 60 on Saturday.
Bev Crouch and Scott Dougall posted the low round in
the foursomes format with a net score of 71 on Sunday.
Forty four members participated in the second year of
this event.
The Fauquier Team won the 8th Annual Edra Mauro
Cup by a score of 14 ½ points to the Springs Team’s
9 ½ points. The Edra Mauro Cup is a 45-hole match
play event that features 16 of the best female golfers
at Fauquier Springs CC and honors the tournament
namesake. Thanks to Karen Mesick (Fauquier Team
Playing-Captain) and Gail Vignoe (Springs Team PlayingCaptain) for their leadership with the event. Scoring
for the Edra Mauro Cup can be found in the golf results
portion of the Gazebo Gazette.
The Chairman’s Team captured the 16th Annual Rider
Cup with a 1 point victory over the President’s Team
with a score of 15 ½ points to 14 ½ points. The
matches were played in tough conditions as the course
received several inches of rain during play. Thanks to
Rob Flikeid (President’s Team Captain) and Huntley
Thorpe (Chairman’s Team Playing-Captain) for their
efforts in organizing the 2-day event. Scoring for the
Rider Cup can be found in the golf results portion of the
Gazebo Gazette.
Congratulations to Brooke Howard and Randall Jones for
winning the Season Long Team Match Play Tournament.
Brooke and Randall defeated Gordon Davis and Mac
Shipe in the 18-hole final by a score of 3&2.
Winter weather may be approaching, but there are still
numerous golf events scheduled for the remainder of

with Loudoun G&CC on Saturday, November 2nd at
Loudoun G&CC and Saturday, November 9 at Fauquier
Springs. The Superintendent’s Revenge Tournament
is scheduled for Sunday, November 3 with a 9:00am
shotgun start. This event will allow Ed Evers to display
his well hidden mischievous and devious side. The
FSCC Veteran’s Day Tournament will be held on Sunday,
November 10. For those members that serve or have
served in any of the branches of the military, there is an
additional competition for the “Eagle Trophy”.

KEEP A “FLEXED” KNEE FOR A SOLID SWING
NOVEMBER
Jack Nicklaus stated
“the swing starts from
the ground up”. While
this statement does
not directly mention
the back knee, it
does emphasize the
importance of the
lower body in framing
a solid swing.
Sun, Nov. 3 Superintendent’s Revenge Tournament
Thurs, Nov. 7 FSCC Pro-Am
Sat, Nov 9 Men’s Home & Home w/Loudoun G&CC
Sun, Nov. 10 Veteran’s Day Tournament
Sat, Nov. 16 1 Gross + 1 Net (Winter Tournament Series)
Sun, Nov. 24 Studebaker Scramble (Winter Tournament Series)
DECEMBER
A flexed back knee is
necessary for golfers
to maintain a proper
weight shift, and
provides efficient coil
between the upper body and the lower body. A flexed back
knee also helps keep the club on the proper swing plane.
Sat, Dec. 7 Lone Ranger Tournament (Winter Tournament Series)
Sun, Dec. 15 Stableford Quota Tournament (Winter Tournament Series)
Fault #1 is commonly referred to as a “reverse weight shift”.
As the back knee straightens during the backswing, the
body’s weight shifts forward towards the target rather than
coiling over the flexed back knee. Once the body’s weight
is positioned towards the forward foot at the top of the
backswing, the weight shift on the forward swing will reverse
direction causing the golfer’s momentum to work away from
the target rather than towards the target. A “reverse weight
shift” often results in a poor contact and an unbalanced finish
position with the golfer’s weight primarily on the back foot.
The Monroe Team defeated the Marshall Team by a score of
36 ½ points to 29 ½ points.
When flex is lost in the backswing, there are 2 common
swing faults that can take place.
Fault #2 occurs when the golfers back knee straightens so
much that the knee locks causing the golfers weight to shift
too far to the outside and often beyond the back foot. Once
in this position, the golfer is likely stuck on the back leg
unable to drive their weight forward towards the target on
the downswing. This position will likely cause the player to
swing around the locked knee causing a forward swing that
is commonly referred to as “out to in”. The golfer’s divot will
often be angled to the left. A repeatable ball flight is difficult
to achieve. The ball will either likely start left and then slice
right or be smothered left (for a right handed golfer) with the
“out to in” path.
Keeping flex in the back knee is the cornerstone in providing
structure, leverage, and balance within the swing. The back
knee is an extremely important component in a grooving a
fundamentally sound golf swing.

A Message
from Grounds
The summer weather is gone and
fall is upon us. For the most part
we had a pretty good season. I’m
certainly not complaining, but this
summer as a whole was wetter
and cooler than normal. Even
the non-irrigated areas around the course stayed green
all season. It was a challenge trying to keep up with the
mowing this season. From the time the grass started
growing until now there was not a week that we were
completely caught up with the mowing. By the time the
mowers would make their way around the course once,
we were already behind schedule and starting over.
Fall has started and along with mowing and moving
leaves we’ve been seeding and fertilizing the roughs
and green surrounds and aerifying fairways and roughs.
Fairway and rough aerification was going very well until
the recent wet weather slowed the process. We will
start back at it as soon as possible. Thank you for your
understanding during the aerification. We have tried to
interrupt as little as possible but unfortunately when we
pull the cores we need to allow them to dry before we
can break them up and work them back into the turf. It
can be a messy process.
We have also gotten most of the walking bridges rebuilt.
All that is left is the bridge on # 5 which hopefully we
will have begun construction before the newsletter is
out. We have had a number of members ask if we are
going to paint the bridges. Yes, we plan to paint the
Virginia Women’s
Tri-County League Champions!
For the second year in a row, Fauquier Springs captured first
place in the Virginia Women’s Tri-County League. Pictured
at right is the team that defeated second place Loudoun Golf
and Country Club in the final match on August 15. They are:
(back row) Jane Maddux, Donna Hildebrand, Phoebe Lyons,
(front row) Priscilla Layton, and co-captains Sue Corcoran
and Maddy Chadwell. Other women who helped win
throughout the season included Beth Bauer, Ann Gravett,
Sandi Kelly, Lisa Mulford, Debbie Pence, Susie Pitts, and
Miggy Strano. Stop by the Proshop to see the trophy!
railing white and the decking with a black material that
will help to make it less slippery. You may have noticed
that the bridge to the Driving Range tee has also been
repaired and widened in the process. It will now easily
handle golf cart traffic. Please be careful when taking a
cart to the range. The path down the hill to the bridge
is steep and can be slippery, especially this time of year
with the wet leaves.
The Driving Range tee and the fairway area in the short
game practice facility have been over seeded with rye
grass. We should start to see a green up early November.
Also I’m sure some of you have noticed that we have
been pulling out the summer flowers around the
clubhouse and entrance road to make room for our cool
season plants. I’ve gotten a few questions as to why we
pull them when they are still looking good. Actually
the earlier you replace them the longer the cool season
flowers will have to mature. This will help them handle
the oncoming frost and freezing weather and will give
them a head start in the spring.
As always if you have any questions regarding what is
happening out on the grounds please feel free to send
me an email, catch me out on the course or ask any of
our grounds committee members.
Thank you,
Ed Evers, Golf Course Superintendent
