Weaving leno is done on different weaving machines, most likely those
are woven on rapier, projectile or shuttle looms, although it has been
found on airjet in some cases.
Steel Heddle® offers a complete range of frames, suitable for leno weaving,
depending on the loom type and weaving width, choosing the best

Complete leno solutions
Steel Heddle® provides the complete set for leno
weaving besides the leno heddles:
• Needle rods
These two rods guide and control the needles.
Excel in creating leno fabrics
Steel Heddle® created a wide range of leno
weaving accessories to excel in the leno
weaving technique. Especially used on open
effect fabrics, this technique allows you to
create a firm structure of your fabric, as well
as to become creative designs in your fabrics.
The effect of leno weaving is that the warp and
weft yarns are held at place by two warp yarns
crossing each other.
Steel Heddle® designed an advanced leno
heddle to ensure quality fabrics. Also used by
many glass weavers, the Steel Heddle® leno
heddle, in combination with the frames,
guarantees better weaving performance in
terms of better fabric quality, higher productivity and cost savings on your weaving machine.
Steel Heddle® Leno Heddles
Steel Heddle® leno heddles are renowned
for their superior quality and performance,
providing superior leno weaving results.
The Steel Heddle tempered leno heddle has
following unique features:
• Special Design
Unique in it’s kind, the properties are
specially chosen to have a smooth yarn
handling during weaving. Especially when
weaving on high tension or with fragile
yarns like glass, this design is indispensable
for weaving quality fabric.
• Tempered material
Steel Heddle® leno heddles are made out
of stainless steel for extra strength. Most
important result is the guarantee of a long
life time, as well as for highly aggressive
yarns to reduce cutting-in.
• Seats
This part is used to hold the two needle rods together
and centered at the ends of the frame. They reduce the
wear of your leno heddle to a minimum.
• Clamps
To make sure that the two needle rods maintain their
position as well as guarantee a perfect position of the
needle, Steel Heddle® developped a
clamp that fits on the needle rod.
• Yokes
For leno heddles it is very important
that the distance between the heddle
rod and needle rod is consistent.
To keep this optimal distance, Steel
Heddle® created a yoke that keeps this
distance
guaranteed at all times.
Principle of leno weaving
The leno or doup heddles consist of 2 standards and 1
needle. The doup ends are drawn through the eye of the
needle. Each standard is driven by a different frame.
To generate the effect of crossing yarns in the fabric, one
or more set(s) of leno frames, consisting of 2 frames per
set, are used. By moving these frames up and down, both
ends cross each other. By inserting the filling yarn, the
crossed yarns are locked in the fabric.
For higher densities or fancier designs, 3 or 4 sets of leno
frames can be used.
• Springs
Used to attach the yokes to the weaving
machine. One or more springs can be
used to give the right tension for your
fabric.
• Interlaced at top and center
Having the leno heddles interlaced, instead
of welded, offers you the advantage of a
stronger heddle, with reduced risk on breakage. Allowing you to run at optimal speeds.
