Spring 2011 Modular Building Institute A QUA RT E R LY N E W S L E T T E R F OR MBI MEMBERS WORLD O F M O D U L A R G E T S R AV E R E V I E W S ! INSIDE THIS ISSUE: World of Modular Review, cover ......................................... President’s Message, page 3 ......................................... Green Code passes in Maryland, page 3 ......................................... At what was one of our industry’s most informative and interactive meetings ever, 450 attendees from 187 companies participated in the MBI 2011 World of Modular last month in Las Vegas. The conference also had some of the highest ratings ever with 99% of respondents rating the convention “excellent” or “good” with 96% saying they will participate in next year’s event. MBI Award Winners, page 4 ......................................... MBI Receives Grant, page 5 ......................................... Board of Directors, page 5 ......................................... In all, 20 speakers during 17 sessions challenged participants in the areas of business strategy, managing your business, research and best practices, green building and building codes, and market analysis. MBI Mourns Loss, page 5 ......................................... Overall themes of the conference were better collaboration, the need for more innovation, and embracing quality and sustainability. Keynote speaker Chris Anderson of Wired magazine touched on some of these giving an interesting session which challenged our thinking about the increasing role of information and technology in the manufacturing sector and how it may impact our particular business model. Welcome New Members, page 7 ......................................... Another highlight of the conference was a session by Harvey Bernstein of McGraw-Hill Construction where he presented encouraging results from of the most comprehensive survey on the modular construction industry to date. He reported that 34% of those surveyed reported improved site safety while 56% said they had about the same level of safety – so 90% said they had same or better job site safety. Sixty-six percent reported a decrease in the project schedule while 77% reported less materials waste. MBI’s competition at the convention, the 2011 Awards of Distinction, saw 76 industry winners, including best of show recipients NRB Inc, Affordable Structures, Southeast Modular Mfg., Triumph Modular, and M Space Holdings. The judges’ choice recipients were Warrior Group and Clayton Building Solutions. Modular construction veterans were also acknowledged for their service to MBI and the industry. Michael Wilmot of Wilmot Modular Structures received the Outstanding Achievement Award while Dick Haakenson of Pacific Mobile Structures and Marv Shetler of Blazer Industries were inducted into the MBI Hall of Fame. Spring 2011 1 2 Spring 2011 PR ESIDENT’S MESSAGE I want to thank everyone who attended, exhibited, and sponsored the 2011 World of Modular in Las Vegas. It was great seeing so many familiar faces and also meeting many new people. The convention had a great turn out, a sold out exhibit hall, many new members in attendance and some of the best educational sessions we’ve ever had. The MBI staff is already making plans to make next year’s event bigger and better and we would appreciate your support in helping us meet our goal of having at least 600 attendees at the next convention. This year MBI will continue to focus its efforts on the IGCC to define and position our industry in a “greener” light while trying to shape and soften some of the more onerous provisions of the code. MBI will also focus on growing membership and providing valuable training for our members, including bringing back the popular green building conference this November. The MBI Educational Foundation as well as our newly launched MBI Canadian Foundation will help propel our industry forward with new research projects and initiatives. There are incredible opportunities on the horizon for our industry and the MBI staff and the board of directors are prepared to help our industry position itself to take advantage of them. I am very proud to be the President of MBI and I look forward to seeing you at our next industry gathering. Sincerely, Mike Ridley MBI President GREEN CODE LEGISLATION PASSES IN MARYLAND A bill authorizing Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to adopt the new green code recently passed the Maryland Assembly. House Bill 972 adds new language to existing Maryland law regarding DHCD’s authority to adopt various codes. Specifically, the new law states that the agency MAY adopt by regulation the IGCC’s first printing, not the current public version 2.0. The bill does not become effective until October 2011, and the green code is not expected to be printed until March 2012 at the earliest. However, this bill clears the path for DHCD to adopt the code next year. Further, by passing the bill, the Maryland legislature is sending the message that it wants and expects the code to be adopted. MBI has already contacted DHCD to set a meeting to discuss our concerns with the code, particularly as it relates to relocatable buildings and plans to be heavily involved in any adoption process in the state. With this passage, the green code moves beyond the realm of theoretically impacting the industry and into the reality that the code is coming. It is interesting that Maryland is our first state test, as the industry has a respectable economic impact in the state. MBI estimates that the industry supports over 1,000 families in Maryland and pays in excess of $3 million in various state and local taxes. Rhode Island adopted the code last year as an alternative compliance path for public funded projects over 5,000 sq. ft., but Maryland would be the first to require it for all construction. MBI has submitted 34 comments to help shape the code to minimize its impact on relocatable buildings as well as to highlight the sustainable advantages our industry offers. We are currently reviewing all 1,300 plus comments submitted in January and planning our strategy for the May hearings. Once again, we are asking for the financial support of everyone in our industry: • Dealers of relocatable buildings are asked to support this effort at the rate of 50 cents per unit in the fleet. • Permanent modular contractors are asked to support at a level between $1,000 and $2,500. • Wholesale manufacturers and associates are asked to contribute between $500 - $1,000. Please make a contribution today by contacting MBI Headquarters at 434-296-3288 or [email protected]. This is an issue that will have an impact on the entire North American construction industry and your support is critical to our efforts to help shape this code. MBI is supporting the creation of the Industrial Research Chair in the Industrialization of Building Construction (IRC) at the University of Alberta. This program, led by Dr. Mohammed Al-Hussein, marks the first industry/ university collaboration to create an entire program focused on alternative construction techniques. The benefits to the entire industry are expected to be significant, as MBI plans to work closely with the IRC to ensure the research is timely and relevant to all sectors of our membership. Several of the objectives of the IRC program were identified by MBI leadership as important to the industry including: • • • • Developing guidelines to integrate industrialized building systems into overall conventional construction processes. Establishment of efficient and standardized installation practices. Improving productivity with innovative manufacturing technologies. Opportunities to apply new and emerging systems technologies through better integration and cross-optimization of systems with the envelope design. • Optimization of material usage and development technologies to minimize construction material waste. • Establishment of a BIM center of excellence in order to advance the science of construction automation. The partnership also allows MBI and its members the opportunity to be guest lecturers, provide factory tours for students, and assist in the research and development of white papers and related articles. 2011-2012 BOARD OF DIRECTORS MBI MOURNS THE LOSS OF INDUSTRY PIONEER 2011 Executive Committee: Joe Lopardo (Williams Scotsman), Past President (RBC) Mike Ridley (Britco Structures), President (PMC) John Lieffrig (ModSpace), VP (RBC) Brent Morgan (ATCO Structures & Logistics Ltd.), VP Elect (PMC) Gary Bockrath (Acton Mobile Industries), Treasurer (RBC) Mike Bollero (Southern Modular Industries), Secretary (PMC) Tom Hardiman, Executive Director, MBI Relocatable Building Division (RBC): Garth Haakenson, Pacific Mobile Structures, Inc.
