Change In Policy For Hooks & Slices
It is fine couples like the Zinns
who year after year use a club and
contribute their efforts to the various
events that spell club success.
Charley Caley's 76 the other day
definitely makes him the club's most
improved golfer.
Clayton and Sylvia Unger are two
new members whose game and good
fellowship are only exceeded by
their good looks.
The Tuerks (all four of them) are
taking after golf with consistent efforts to catch up on a game that
tests the metal of all who try it.
Maxine Merrill's sad scourge of
shanking caused a promising game
to go sour during the payoff tournament season. But Maxine is not
licked and I'm still betting on her for
1941 City Champ.
Harold Hansen (new member) is
taking lessons, so don't let his club
handicap cause you to give him too
many strokes - he is tough.
C. R. Stokes and son are two new
members who play consistently well.
They both hit long balls.
Norman Andersen is another new
member who can hit that ball. He
had a fine 81 the 10th of August.
There have been a lot of satisfied
customers in both Grill and Dining
Room since the Club became se1£sufficient. It must have been a good
move and congratulations to those responsible.
Walt Stein did a nice bit for the
prestige of Mt. Hawley when he eliminated "City Champ" Andy Paul
from the Caterpillar Tourney.
Heinie Triebel did his part by
reaching the semi-finals.
The Stag at Eve
The next issue (October) will be the last monthly issue of Hooks and
Slices for the current season. Henceforth the magazine will be issued eight
times per year - a mid-winter issue appearing late in January to chronicle
the change in Officers and Governors and giving the new Officers a chance
to announce their plans and policies for the year; thence monthly for the
seven golfing months, starting with April.
The Committee believes the membership will react favorably to this
change in policy. Club activities are at a low ebb during the winter months,
pictures hard to obtain, and members will be relieved of the task of wading
through a lot of "forced" material.

FOUR MT. HAWLEY MEMBERS
QUALIFY FOR CITY CHAMPIONSHIP
Led by Bob Leu's neat 77, four Mt. Hawley members entered the play
off for the City Golfing crown, Bob McCord had 79, Lyle Hoffman had 80
as did Tom Cassidy. Our golfers are under a handicap playing on the poor
greens at Newman after a year of our fine putting surfaces, but with luck and
perseverance they may go far.

By Mrs. F. L. Hazen
Before I take off for Northern Wisconsin to do a little fishing, I'll try
and get you caught Up, on the golf
dope for the rest of the month. About
the 19th of this month I won't have
to hear Lyle Hoffman say, "How
about that column for "Hooks and
Slices?" Won't that be a grand and
glorious feeling.
Our "Ladies Play Day" was indeed a fine one. The day was very
hot but very few girls had to quit
playing golf. The girls more than
enjoyed the Grill (thanks to the men)
and our slot machines were in fine
working ordet. Much money was
taken in. 150 women were there
and everyone seemed to have a
good time.
Gete Hubbard certainly knows
how to entertain on the accordion
and Katie Dougherty on the piano.
Alice Wead leads the singing and
our entertainment is first class.
"Congratulations" to Mary Louise
Smutz: We are very proud of this
youngster, winning the A Flight in
the city tournament this year. Keep
up the good work Mary Louise, and
before many moons the championship will be right in your lap.
35 girls enjoyed a .game of golf
and luncheon with the Pekin girls
Aug. 6. Maxine Williams and Lee
Soules carried off the honors for Mt.
Hawley. Maxine had the low gross,
Lee Soules had low net and Ann
Squires had the best time. We have
never been able to find out what
Ann was talking about, but all she
would say was "No tickee, no
shirtee." Remarks like this are often heard at the "Nineteenth Hole."
On the 3rd of Sept., we play at
Newman Golf Course with the P. W.
G. A. girls. Hope the Holiday preceding doesn't wear you out so you
can't enjoy this day with the city
girls.
"Sweepstakes"
will be the play
at Mt. Hawley if you can't go over
to Newman.
Sept. IOth, school having started,
we'll have a one club match of nine
holes.
Caddies will probably be
scarce. The 17th brings up our consolation Day for the year. I believe
you are' all familiar with this play.
Only players who have not won a
prize compete for this trophy.
The 24th of Sept. ends our golf for
the year with the final luncheon and
trophy presentation.
Not many days left to bring down
that handicap, so let's all work hard.
I'll be thinking of you,
MARY HAZEN.

Now that the big Calcutta Pool
Auction, and pre-tourney stag is but
a memory, we can settle down to
worrying about the out-come of the
classic itself. However we predict
that as usual the best will come thru
to a brilliant victory, and we want to
be the first to congratulate them.
"Mummy," asked a little girl, "how
long is it since daddy died?"
"He didn't die, dear," her mother
sighed, "he joined a golf club."

Jones and yours truly have been trying to arrange a game, but from what
I hear about his shooting eagles and
79's it looks like no soap, unless, of
course, he is in a generous mood in
the stroke department, how about
it Ken?

Molly: "I hear you've taken up
golf. What do you go around in?"
Polly: "Well usually in a sweater
and skirt."
Did you ever test your car for
smooth operation at low speed?Well, why not do this every time you
drive in and out of the club grounds.
Thanx.
When John Luce took a shower
the other day with his cap on, I
thought it the funniest sight I'd seen,
but along comes a guy who gets under a shower smoking a pipe - Well
everybody to their own notion, I always say.
"Lightning" Coddington asked a
farmer friend how he told the difference between his ganders and geese.
The farmer said he never worried

about that, he just turned them all
out together and let them figure it out
for themselves.
It won't be long now until our ace
fishing brigade will be coming back
with the usual run of stories, so get in
shape for a lot of heavy listening.
While up to now we haven't seen
him, we are informed that Jay Keith
is back, and from what we've picked
up regarding the last issue it's a good
thing, but what can you expect at
these prices?
Down through the years the horse
in one form or another has been one
of the prime essentials of man now
f'rinstance there was Buffalo' Bill
Paul Revere, General Grant, th~
James boys and even Lady Godiva
used one to advantage, but the modern version, and a picture' for sore
eyes is our own Jack (Lone Ranger)
Power, dolled up in baggy pants and
boots astride his favorite steed cantering through dale and vale, now
when he gets real good, I understand he plans to enter the Mossville Steeple Chase, my what strenuous exercise (for the horse).
Several times in the past I've
crossed niblics with Gene Modjeska
with no luck - so thought I'd drop
down a notch and choose George well anyway there might be a chance
for me with Jerry.
Did you ever realize that a hick
town is one where there is no place
to go that one shouldn't.
We have it on good authority that

SWIMMING
The qualifying trials for the club
swimming champions
were held
Aug. 4 with the largest total of entrants in Mt. Hawley history - 52
trying out in the six divisions. Only
the four fastest times are chosen
to swim in the finals.
The finals held Aug. 18th were
nice for the spectators, but chilly for
the contestants the day being cold
and overcast, however the meet went
off as scheduled with four qualifiers
not present. Carolyn Greene was
taken ill Friday evening, Gene Slevin tore a ligament in his ankle Saturday afternoon, Dorothy O'Brien
and Ruth Wesselhoft also absent.
The feature races of the afternoon
were the intermediate girls breast
stroke, senior girls back stroke, and
junior boys back stroke. Naturally
various races would appeal to individual spectators and being unable
to watch all closely I chose these
for their close finish.
Four records were broken. Jack
Hinnen broke the 50 yd. backstroke
for intermediate boys.
Then Patty
Magaret broke the record formerly
held by Mary Louise Olson in the

then splashed his way to a record
in the Junior boys free style which
was held by Bob Cumming.
Bob Cumming goes out of club
competition in a blaze of glory at the
age of 14. He spent 3 years in the
Junior Division blasting his way out
of that group by tying one record,
breaking another, and taking four
firsts. In 1939 competing as an intermediate he broke two records and
again took four first places and
this year repeated with four firsts, but
was too young and undeveloped
to break records held by "Crit" Newell and "Chuck" Power. However, he
holds the unique record of having
won the three divisional trophies
without a defeat the year he won
them.
We still have two records standing

The Outdoor Sports Season will
keep up in full blast for several more
weeks, possibly a couple of more
months, so make good use of the various activities offered as long as you
can.
Then after that the Fall and Winter Seasons will come in for their turn
and what a lot of fine times the Entertainment Committee has planned.
There will be something attractive on
the program each week and how
fast the time will fly from the very
first function this Fall on through
the Winter months.
Formerly, when the Golf Season
was over with, considerable interest was lost until the following
Spring, but the last several years the
interest has kept up in a big way in fact, the Fall and Winter Seasons,
with their Dinner parties, Dances,
Stags, Bowling, and so on, are now
looked forward to with the same
degree of interest as the Golf Season.
The above facts prove that a Membership in Mt. Hawley offers a year
round assortment of pleasures, relaxation, and a: fine diversion from
one Season to another. Therefore,
please don't let up urging your
friends and associates to join your
Club and enjoy with you the many
fine times that are planned for the
coming Fall and Winter months.
At the rate the Club is progressing, Mt. Hawley Memberships undoubtedly will not be offered at such
attractive fees much longer.
The Membership Committee appreciates the fine results that have
been accomplished by all of you in
bringing our total membership well
up to such a high point.
Keep up the fine work.
Respectfully Submitted,
JIM HACK,
Chr. Membership Committee.

Mrs. Wead did a grand job in our
Ladies championship and recaptured

congratulations, after playing 3 fine
medal rounds under pressure.
Along about August First, some of
you
members
were
wondering
whether or not the Fairways would
ever "Green up" again. Of course
your Pro, being always. optimistic,
told you that as soon as nature came
to its aid with a few rains, the course
would be as fine as ever. If you have
played Mt. Hawley lately you will
know that the blue-grass has "come
back."
Speaking of our course, we also
have reason to be more than a little
proud of our greens. [ust recently, I
was in Chicago to look over the amateurs in the Chicago District Championship at the Riverside Golf Club.

WHY NOT
Why not follow the advice of the
globe trotting caddy and play more
heads-up golf by playing with your
head down.
Call up [ohn Olson and get him
started playing golf again. I believe
he's ready to go.
Why not - give Royal Pierce the
glad hand for showing the most enthusiasm.
Why not - take a look at Hal
Hanson's new swing and learn how
to hook.
Why not - make a wager that
George Dovey will some day play
18 holes.
Why not - congratulate
Ell is
Rainey for getting back into the game
again.
Why not - congratulate Len Potter for playing in the Mixed foursome.
Why not?
