Starting 3 days prior to the race, pilots make training flights on the race course. On his first day of training Mike Mangold cut a
gate pylon, which only fell down slowly.

After the first training day, a national media visit was held in the hangar area. As well as the national media, students from local
schools attended this event. Mangold was one of their favourite pilots.

For a slalom pass in between three pylons, Mangold forces his Edge over Golden Horn. The building with a pointed roof is Galata
Tower, which is one of Istanbul’s landmarks.

Mangold can be seen around hangars, discussing, helping and joking with the members of other teams. He got a good experience
while flying both in military and aerobatics. He used all his experience in modifying his Edge.

In signing the painter-artist Sullivans “Smoke on” painting, Mangold was happy again. With a bunch of jokes, he signed the picture
with a pencil upside down.

The disaster came the day before the race. During a rough maneuver in the qualification session Mangold’s starboard wingtip
was broken. The carbon fiber piece fell into the waters of Golden Horn.

About 7 minutes later after he lost his wingtip, Mangold returned back to airport, probably thinking that the race was over. He had
no chance to find another wingtip and get the plane ready for the next day’s race.

Immediately after he parked his Edge in the hangar, the doors were closed to the rest of the world.

Mangold leaves the hangar in sadness. His hope for the next days race is over.

However, on the day of the race, Mangold was on his wings again. His team recovered the lost wing tip from the Golden Horn.
And as if he wants to show his respect to the team he ended the race as a winner.

Although he had a rough experience the day before, Mangold was happy again after the race. He was back to his jokes, by hiding
behind a flag during a photo shoot while sailing to the ceremony area.

Bonhomme, Mangold and Chambliss pose together at the media area, built next to the Golden Horn. These three will meet again
in 43 days, this time in Interlaken.
