It is said that in 1577 during the Livonian War a groom hid his bride in the cave.The Tartars found the two fugitives and killed them. Tilery is closed but its chimney is still seen from a distance. There is also a strong spring at the base of the cliffs. The water it carries is believed to have healing powers. The place is located in a beautiful park that is popular with walkers. Red cliffs are remarkable for countless cracks through which numerous springs flow. The medieval German name of the city, Wenden, was derived from the name of Wends. 1213–1214 The construction of the stone wall castle took place under the guidance of Livonian Brothers of the Sword. It became a strategically important military object and a base for further conquests, as well as a residence of the Brothers of the Sword and later of the masters of Livonian Order. 1279 The red-white-red flag, which was used by Cēsis home guard, helping the inhabitants of Riga to fight Zemgalians, was first mentioned in Livonian Rhyme chronicle. The choice of the colours for the flag of Latvian was built upon the information in the chronicle. 1383 The first known image of the coat of arms of Cēsis, which was used in the seal to confirm a document. The main parts of the image, namely a knight with a sword and an armour standing on a stone wall of the city, have been preserved until nowadays. 1577 The Russian-Tatar army under the leadership of Ivan the Terrible destroys Cēsis stone castle, shelling it for ‘five days and nights’. It belongs to the Sievers family until 1922. 1889 During the construction of Cēsis railroad the burial field of the most ancient inhabitants of Cēsis, Wends, is found. 1924 Monument of Victory if unveiled in Cēsis. It’s a dedication to Estonian and Latvian soldiers, who were killed in Cēsis battles in June 1919. 1944 In September, as a result of military actions of Soviet and German armies, a part of the old town of Cēsis is destroyed. 1969 Near Cēsis, in Cīrulīši, one of the best sleigh tracks in the Soviet Union is opened 1980 Archaeologist J. Apals explores the place of residence of Wends, Riekstu hill. 1988 On 22nd October, for the first time during the Soviet occupation, the red-white-red Latvian national flag is hoisted on the mast of the tower of Cēsis New castle. 2006 The 800th anniversary of Cēsis city is included into UNESCO list of the most significant events. 2012 New exposition “Cēsis – a symbol of the history of Latvia” is opened in Cēsis History and Art museum in the New castle. The reconstructed part of the gate gives an impression of the medieval walls and scale of the gate. Cēsis Victory monument (1924, restored in 1998), built to commemorate Latvian and Estonian soldiers who fell killed in the Latvian War of Liberation (1918–1920). Church is located in the North-East steep slope of the Castle Park. It was built in a Byzantine style. In the altar of the church the painting “Resurrection of Christ” can be seen and the internal walls are covered by the paintings of J. Köhler. Town can be dated back to at least the 14th century. Turkish Cemetery Imantas iela 3, Cēsis The Cemetery was established in 1878 when 26 Turkish soldiers, Russian prisoners-of-war, were buried here. The spike of the tower was built in 1853 and now it is the place where everyone can enjoy panoramic view of Cēsis.
