The Final Chord We extend our sympathy to Pat Ring whose

azz at Five begins its 21st season Wednesday, August 6. The 2014 series, held on the 100 block of State Street, where State Street meets the
Capital Square, features performances each Wednesday night from August 6 through September 3. Performances on August 13, 20, 27 and
September 4, however, will begin at 4:15 PM with a student jazz combo and run to approximately 8:00 PM. A variety of food is available from
local providers plus award-winning beer from Capital Brewery. Reserved tables and a party patio—both featuring food and drink service—are
also available.
On August 6, the Jazz at Five season kicks off with local favorite pianist Tim Whalen Nonet - his nine piece combo (6:30 PM), preceded
at 5 PM by Nuggernaut, a five piece combo playing groove oriented jazz, fusion, and funk,.
August 13 is gypsy jazz night with Swing Gitan and the great Alfonso Ponticelli (6:30 PM). The evening starts with Madison’s own
popular Harmonious Wail (5 PM).
On August 20, the Arturo O'Farrill Trio is coming from New York to the Jazz at Five Stage (6:30 PM). The evening includes Johannes
Wallman’s newest big band ensemble–The Sweet Minute Band (5 PM).
Local performers The Big Payback, a nine piece combo, will be on the Jazz at Five stage for the first time on August 27 (5 PM), followed
by the Tizar Quartet led by Keyboardist/Composer Lao Tizer from West Hollywood, CA, presenting a contemporary jazz/fusion set (6:30 PM).
The series ends on September 3 with a night of big band jazz. The Darren Sterud Orchestra will be performing both sets with Classic
Big Band and “Jazz Meets the Blues” featuring Jimmy Voegoli. More information is available at www.jazzatfive.org.
